Hello! My name is Zach, I work as a middle school gifted education teacher (formerly social studies) and also run an after school games club. This channel is designed to be a creative outlet for creating commander decks on a budget for Magic: the Gathering built around a randomly selected card. I'm also working on bringing more D&D to the channel as well so keep an eye out for that in the future.

Welcome to episode 203 of the Commander's Guild: "Jaheira, Detective of the Forest" Every week I go to scryfall.com and randomly select a card, making a budget (under $100) commander deck around it and showcasing a gameplay video of the deck. This week I'm joined by Bilal, Doodle, and Vintage.
This week's random card is Jaheira, Friend of the Forest and she's also the commander alongside her background, Clan Crafter. A unique interaction this deck is built around is the fact that Jaheira lets any token tap for mana, not just creature tokens, and that Clue tokens don't need to be tapped as part of their activation cost. That means that we can tap the Clues to pay for their own abilities, giving us nearly unlimited mana and card draw to win the game with.
If you have suggestions for any future deck ideas (or want to request a specific card to build around), let me know in the comments. Hope you enjoy it!

Kytheon, Hero of Akros Personal Deck Walkthrough

I get asked about my personal Gideon deck quite a bit so I wanted to show it off to everyone. This deck is my favorite in my collection, so much so that it's as foiled out as it possibly can be and is one of the few decks I own with matching basic lands. I like the Doodlejumper's deck. Where can I see the decklist?
I will see if I can get the decklist from him!
In the meantime, though, if you want to see more of Doodle’s deck, he plays it again in my Wowzer video.
Okay, I got you: scryfall.com/@Doodlehumper69/decks/cf68cf16-3a69-47c4-b1d8-4012ae2a8d90
@ Wow. That was fast. Thank you very much)
Do you have any plans for an $100 budget? Like do cuts and adds
It’s already on a budget of $100 so I’m not sure what you mean.
Super cool video! Im going to try out this decklist this weekend, though I think Im going to add a few silver bordered cards since the commander is a rule 0 only play.
That’s super fair. What cards are you thinking about adding?
@@DungeonLearnersGuide Booster tutor, Opening Ceremony, and Greatest Show in the Multiverse using Adam Paquette's artwork since it gives us a good chance to cast reshape the earth and some other cool cards. Also not super sexy but Park Map is a good add if UN cards can be used.
@AmigoAzul I like it, those seem like some sweet upgrades. Good luck with the deck!
That was a fun game to watch!
I’m glad you think so! It was a ton of fun to play too.
Very cool! Do you manage to get it to the table often?
Not as often as I’d like but it’s usually the first deck I break out if I go to a convention or LGS.
Great video! I have some doubts regarding how did you use breath of fury at the end. Maybe i missed something but odric is only giving you indestructible and menace. So the creatures that come in with the chitterlord and the garrison can't attack. I think you missed that too on the explanation of the combo earlier on. Breath of fury doesn't goes infinity with Otharri, not alone at least. The tokens enter tapped and attacking, but they don't have haste. So if you get an additional combat face, they can't attack, so you can't keep doing that over and over. You would need a source of haste for the tokens, and then it goes infinite. Regadless of that, great list. The only thing i would recommend is cutting a couple of the worst creatures to get in something like loren's escape, god's willing or some form of instant speed protection for Otharri
You may be right. I’d have to go back and look at the game but I know it was a complicated turn so I may have missed not having haste.
Would love to see more of your decks.
Do you think the format of going through the entire deck worked or should I lay the deck out beforehand?
@DungeonLearnersGuide I like going through it card by card, it kinda feels more like I'm browzing through a friend's new deck, hah. Also I think it's actually possible that it's clearer, since we can see each card better.
@frantasvoboda4387 that makes sense. I’m working on getting a better camera so hopefully that helps too.
Kytheon*
You’re so right. I fixed it. Thank you!
Nice nice. Love the idea.
Thanks! I wanted to try something new and show off one of my own decks so I’m glad you like it.
I built this one. It's a lot of fun! Morph has a few upsides and downsides - a lot of the effects can be underwhelming, but it's really fun keeping your opponents guessing. Another thing that makes morph fun is it's really hard to interact with - flipping cards does not exist on the stack
Yeah, morph has always been one of those archetypes that’s a ton of fun but not overwhelmingly powerful.
Just as a heads up, in the description of this one, you call it "the little thopter that could" rather than "mighty morphin'"
Thanks for the heads up! I’ll make sure that gets fixed.
Yedora was sadly outclassed here, but using a whiteboard as a playmat? Brilliant!
The whiteboard playmat is top-tier for sure.
Alora, Merry Thief is a great addition to a Ninjitsu deck. In fact, I have a deck with her as the commander and Agent of the Shadow Thieves as the Background. (For those puzzled, you make a creature unblockable, then bounce that back to your hand with a Ninjitsu ability. Then you don't have to return anything at end of turn and you can recast the bounced creature after combat.)
That’s super cool, I like that tech. I honestly didn’t even think about Alora for this.
I’ve been waiting for this one! Excited to see the whole deck!
Hope it lived up to expectations! 😁
@@DungeonLearnersGuidevery much so! 😄
I made her voltrony (kinda) Sadistic glee and the usual artifacts.
That sounds like a sweet build!
@@DungeonLearnersGuide Vehicle shenanigans is cool bro! You got big brain plays :)
Thank you! 😊
The most thought-out video about Eriette I've seen! Will definitely incorporate many ideas/cards
Thank you! I’m glad you found some ideas you could make use of. 😊
@@DungeonLearnersGuide As for against wide boards ... Tresspaser's Curse, Ghostly Prison, maybe Norn's Annex ... is there anything more? I think it's a notable weakness of hers. Maybe Curse of Death's Hold, but that's expensive to cast
@JPNox if you really want to lean into anti-attacks then Nils, Discipline Enforcer, Sphere of Safety, and Mystic Barrier could also work well in the deck. Sphere of Safety especially.
@@DungeonLearnersGuide thank you, great tips. I kinda think you have to? You're draining and influencing the whole table, last time I played her that kinda put a target on my head ... and it's imho one of Eriette's main weaknesses ... it takes 1 aura to remove 1 huge threat, but 20 tokens you can't ... or even a medium count of medium creatures
@JPNox if you’re looking for another addition to help against tokens you can also try Inkshield. Once you’ve got it in hand you can kind of just hold it up to win the game. Either you drain the table with Eriette or someone swings all out at you and you make a game winning amount of Inklings.
about the bearer of heaven it says when he dies his ability is triggered does this means he can only died by combat or by other means like sacrifice or discard?
It means it can be sacrificed, die in combat, or be removed by your opponents. Discarding isn’t dying but everything else will still trigger the ability.
Great video! I have this card in Abuelo to draw a ton and also have the ability to blink it out to avoid the downsides
That seems like a good fit. It’s probably for the best it only draws cards when it’s cast though or you may be drawing your entire deck every game.
Yeah, that's what Astral Dragon and Coveted Jewel are for!
I’m a big fan of both of those cards. I bet they do tons of work in Abuelo.
Great video as always, that game was a nailbiter for me. Trying to mitigate Paul was an exercise in futility. One error though, I played Tinybones, the Pickpocket at the end, not Bauble Burglar
Oops! I did the last bit of editing with no sound so I must have mixed up the two Tinybones. But yeah, Paul popped off and was tough to stop.
Fell killing feldon feels poetic
Yeah, I actually struggled to say that line a few times, it was like a tongue twister for some reason.
I did what I could
Working on ideas for starscream and idk why i wanted to build a mono black storm/spell slinger deck lol
Mono black storm sounds like a sweet deck.
Two words: Platinum Angel. Sadly, Platinum Emperion is a nonbo with the Grimoire. I'd also consider something like Crystal Shard so you can bounch the Grimoire when you need to get out of a game-losing situation.
I like that. I had also considered some phasing so you could phase out the Grimoire before taking a hit. Bouncing it does let you recast it and draw 5 new cards though. 🤔
Jace Wielder of Mysteries / thassa’s oracle might have been good additions given that running out of cards is a really possibility with this deck
Jace is in the deck already but Thoracle didn’t make the cut for budget purposes. Definitely both necessary though.
Noice.
Thanks!
Man I didn’t know quilled great wurm existed! I need that for gruul reanimator! Also imprisoned in the moon looks phenomenal with its new enchantment border
The Greatwurm is so good, I’ll definitely get some use out of it.
Great pack!
It really was! The Greatwurm in particular is a menace if it’s allowed to stick around.
Man, that Mort guy sounds smart *and* handsome!
My problem with Delney is that, must of the creatures are at 2 power, so if i put one of my auras that increase power (pretty common) on nearly anything of mine, if stops Delney from doubling them.
True. But that’s why you usually aim to put the auras on your opponents things, doubling up Eriette’s ability.
@DungeonLearnersGuide unfortunately in my group, I get attacked when I enchant opponent creatures and ignored when I enchant my own. Even with the same auras....
That’s why Eriette’s the commander though, she prevents your opponents creatures from attacking you if you enchant them. Regardless, if you do enchant your own creatures and still want Delney to work then you can just make sure you don’t enchant Eriette so her ability still doubles.
Amazing to see such titans of Magic engaged in this battle of brains! This was a fun video to make and a funner year getting here, thanks Zach!
Glad you could join for it! 😊
Cool deck! I see evolving wilds, terramorphic expanse, etc in the deck but the deck does not contain any basics to fetch 😱
Yeah, there aren’t supposed to be any basics so Hermit Druid can mill the entire deck. I was just running out of cheap non basic land options at the time. There’s been plenty of decent ones printed since then that could easily replace the two you mentioned.
Asuza and Zendikars Roil /Rampaging Baloths would be good army pieces
Very true! I like those inclusions.
I get the feeling that Ezuri is going to win, with the ramp/mana-fixing, drawing and stable counters provided by Simic colours.
Oh, Archelos won, nice
Ezuri put in the work though, so that was a fair guess. It basically took a 3v1 to take it down. Archelos did a great job of cleaning up.
Fantastic deck tech, I loved seeing this build and the game was super fun! Archelos had to return from last year to remind you that "Life...is not...a race."
Archelos put in some work in this game. Like I said, it felt more like a control deck than I expected. It was pretty cool.
Cool build as always, really appreciate how you go out of your way to not build the genetic buikd. looking forward to seeing number 200! My first ever card suggestion, and it isn't a commander, is Swans of Bryn Argoll.
Thank you, I’m also looking forward to number 200! And I’m also more than happy to build around Swans of Bryan Argoll, that’s one of my favorite kinds of decks. I’ll be honest, though, it will probably take it a while before the deck shows up on the channel since I work so far in advance.
@@DungeonLearnersGuide no worries at all, I'm sure you have plenty to work through. I think I'm going to try the swans in my Faramir deck.
Nice video. Not sure why I've completely overlooked Zulaport cutthroat over Blood Artist. Also that guy's proliferate tech was pretty awesome. Any chance you could cover Mishra, Tamer of Mak Fawa sometime? Unearth in Rakdos seems like a fun idea.
I can definitely look into it! I will admit, though, I have a Rakdos reanimate/unearth deck coming up with a different Mishra that has Tamer of Mak Fawa in it so that may be similar to what you’re looking for.
@@DungeonLearnersGuide Awesome, I've been fine tuning a deck for it likewise. Sticking to the theme of unearth/reanimate, so would be great to see your take on it.
Im sorry man, i trid to watch the video but the random swallowing through out it was very off putting. Either refrain from the swallows or edit them out in post for future.
Fair. I was still pretty new to making videos when this was done.
Saw the leyline while looking on youtube for the right video about Empress Galina... for a playlist. yoooo Run that leyline in my Red White Blue "Mirror Box illegal Modern deck" alongside [Mirror Box] ; [Eater of Virtue] ; Roggrath [rograkh son of rohgahh] ; [Hope of Ghirapur] ; Kami Doggy [Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful] ; a couple of [Mina Harker] version of Thalia and other stuff. 😉 Was one of the first decks to really abuse Mirror Box. then Eater of virtue superpowers the kobold or thopter. when you play it you know how fun, wierd and busted it gets. Singularity was only printed once until recently and so now it's cheaper. Deck is illegal because the 0 drop red and 1 drop white are EDH legal but not legal in modern.
That sounds like a sweet idea for a deck! Leyline always causes a little chaos.
Alternative title: Casual Retirement Plan Showcase
I can only hope.
I can't tell, but that Charizard might be worth some coin
That was the one that stuck out to me too.
Was very happy to finally drop a Portal Manipulator and have it stick!
Portal Manipulator is such a good card and I should definitely be playing it more.
Interestingly, my dad has a Pokémon set looking very similar to yours from when he was a kid. I think he only has set 1 and 2 as well. My brother and I also played with it for fun a few times and I found out that Charizard is my favorite Pokémon from those games because I used the same Charizard show at 6:20. It’s kinda OP with just the original set(s).
That’s awesome!
How many unique creature types are in this deck?
Each creature has at least one unique type so 44 total creatures with a couple with two types puts it around 50.
I always consider Riptide Laboratory when my commander is a Wizard. It gives you a way to rescue your commander from removal. (And it's only about a quarter!)
You’re so right, I always forget about Riptide but it’s such a good include for any deck that cares about a Wizard.
First viewer! I have no life!
Nothing wrong with that, someone has to be first.
Whats your opinion on Zevlor, Elturel Exile in this deck?
I think it would be a really good addition. I completely forgot that Zevlor’s ability applied to creatures and not just players or I would’ve included him.
