Tapes, Taping, Taped
Once you've jointed your veneers, you're going to want to keep them together during the pressing. Blue masking tape works best and I'll show you why...I wish I had invested in 3M stock right out of woodworking school!

Jointing veneer is REALLY easy with a track saw. While not everyone has one this might just be the excuse you need to get one. I'll give you some tips and show you a jig made by Editor Rob Brown at Canadian Woodworking & Home Improvement Magazine. ua-cam.com/video/I3XH33VA5so/v-deo.html Canadian Woodworking & Home Improvement Magazine June/July 2020 Issue canadianwoodworking.com/project/make-a-...

Making a simple handle for my chamfering cutter. A fun little project that requires no real super precise measurements and a great way to customize your tools. I just wanted to spend time in the shop in between projects and not really have to think. Making & Using Shellac

A short video on making and using shellac. It's not a difficult process and is one of my "go to" finishes. It's easy, quick and you'll get great results. There is plenty of latitude when it comes to the recipe and even how it is applied. There are lots of "pros" to using it as a finish although there are other uses for it as well...

Veneer Softening
Переглядів 6 тис.4 роки тому
Using softener solution to tame some really curvy veneer. Just one way of softening veneer prior to pressing or laying up onto a core.
Great vid. Super simple. I’m just starting to play with veneers and while more involved I’m loving it.
Is the veneer still able to be stained after this procedure? Thank you for making and posting this vid.
Yes, not an issue at all.
Very pretty, but only cutting and assembly, with no discussion of the angles required. For what it's worth, this asa-no-ha pattern requires 22.5, 45, and 67.5 degrees. (Well, 90 too, I guess.)
Thank you. Sometimes silence is more than enough…
Can the softener be applied from the back if it is a paper backed veneer?
Hmmmm...interesting question. Not sure as I almost always use raw veneer. However, thinking about it not sure why you would need to soften paperback stuff. It should be fairly easy to work. Try it and let me know how it goes. Thanks Steve
how long with the softener does it last for? like how long can i work with it before it would dry out and require the process again?
Hi Sean. Thanks for watching. Commercial softener is good for around 48hrs after the process. If you don't get to it by then you can always soften again. Nothing bad can happen from doing it again. Thanks Steve
@@theblackwalnutstudio how much pressure is required like a minimum? as i am trying to get into marquetry would there be any further processes that need to be done in preparation?
Beautiful to watch an artisan working with no unnecessary distracting music.
Thank you very much. I appreciate that
I leaned into veneering very heavily in the past three months. I CANNOT BELIEVE I missed your channel before my first few projects. This is the best channel I have found for veneering instruction! Subscribed, and I look forward to purchasing your book!
That's 4 min I can never get back.
This channel is criminally under watched. Thank you for going into this level of detail!

@titebond does it all mon ami!

So... all you really need is a bottle of “not maple syrup.” They laughed me out of the store when I asked for that. 😁
Bravo
Thanks for posting these veneer videos, I've learned a lot from them! All the best from Portugal
Great video. I’m looking forward to doing a project with veneer again 😊
Thanks Jonathan. Looking forward to seeing the project!
This information will come in handy for my next veneering project. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
I don't do much veneering but next time do your video will help a lot. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Great accessories!
Thanks Vic!
Woah! Great video! ❤
Thanks Pat! More to come…
This is the best video out there about making and applying shellac. Great job Steve!
An excellent tutorial. Very well done commentary. Excellent video work.👍👍 Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thanks very much Glen!
Mr. Veneer! Great vid!
Thanks Bryan! Much appreciated!
Great video Steve!
Thanks Kevin. I appreciate the kind words!
Shit!! It's over already? Well done video.
Lol. Thanks Ned!

will epoxy adhere to the veneer after its been treated with that softener?
Hi Trevor. Yes , it will "stick" to the veneer after softening however, you will need to let the veneer dry a bit no matter what glue you are using. I typically apply the softener then place it in between sheets of clear newsprint for about 24 hours changing the newsprint as needed. Hope that helps.
Meu nome é Ricardo. I'm in Ribeirão Preto-SP, Brazil. Congratulations on the detailed video showing the construction step by step. I've been watching videos about KUMIKO for a long time, but yours is the best of all. Thank you very much for the posted video.
Hi Ricardo. Thanks very much for the kind words. You're most welcome. I 'm glad it helped.
Could you explain why you are changing the blades on the table saw. Pls
Très bon travail
ZENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN If you think this is meditative you need to watch Kumiko made with hand tools only!
Thanks
You talk too much...lol.
Extremely informative video on veneering, thank you so much for sharing.
In a later video you glued both the substrate and the veneer. Yet in this one you just glued the substrate. ??? This is an excellent tutorial on veneering. 👍👍 Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Hi Glen. In the other video I was making iron on veneer. Basically you apply PVA glue to both the veneer and core then use an iron to apply it. In this one it is a vacuum bag and you only need it on the core. Thanks for the kind words and for watching it. I hope that helped.
Where is the method for hanging on a wall or cabinet?😀😀 Yea, I know, you want to know where I was when the paper was blank. I might have edge banded the board too. I love the pencil holder. Great project. 👍👍Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Excellent video. Great production. I do have two suggestions. Could you start the video with an example? It would make it easier to understand what each piece is for. And a short comment about dimensions and angles would be appreciated. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day.
Hi Glen. Thanks for watching. Those are great suggestions. I’ll be making another video soon and will add those for sure. Thanks.

Enjoyed video very much. Where can the chisel holder you used be obtained?
Thanks for making me a hammer Steve! That was very cool of you.

So relaxing to watch! 😊
I knew you liked the "only shop sounds" vids. Thanks Pat!
Why did you flatten it twice? I'm trying to learn to use veneers so any help will be appreciated.
Hi Martin. Thanks for watching. I don’t actually apply softener twice. I ended up changing the newsprint twice, and sometimes even 3 or 4 times, so that the veneer dries. I don’t want to press wet veneer. Using commercial softener this will stay soft and pliable for about 2 days after drying.
If I can help some more please let me know.
@@theblackwalnutstudio oh ok. So just to make sure it dries fully, thanks.
@@koalafan1576 Yes. That’s right! You’re welcome
@@theblackwalnutstudio do I have to straighten the entire piece or can I rough cut the pieces I want to use and do I always have it soften and flatten? Do I need the roller they sell or can I just glue without that? I’m starting from scratch with few tools.
It would appear that this is a very meditative process. I enjoyed watching the precision involved in this art form.
Great video, Steve. I love using shellac and you did a great job explaining your process. I've got a digital scale accurate to less than 1mg that I keep in a temperature controlled room so I can accurately measure my shellac :-)
Thanks David. I appreciate that. I'm going to convert my spare room into a "Shellac Room". Temperature, humidity, biometric and dust controlled.
Great video my friend!
Very informative Steve! Great video! 🤗
have been using shellac for many, many years but doing so many things wrong. This is such a clear, understandable tutorial. Well done! I will be changing up my techniques for sure. Thanks for your help.
Excellent video Steve. You made the process understandable!
