Super lecture, thank you!
Well done Timothy, nice presentation of a complex subject, one that often leads to moments of over-excitement in flight when things don't work out as planned. To touch on a couple of your points, I work on a fairly conservative fuel flow rate, that is based on an average hourly consumption somewhat higher than my aircraft actually achieves. I'm sitting behind a Lycoming IO-540, and plan on 15US gph. In reality I cruise at 11.5 - 12 gph when lean of peak. Why so conservative on the planning?... well of course at take off power the engine burns 25 gph, 20 in the climb, and 10 gph or less on descent. So after two years of learning its foibles, including dip-sticking the tanks before and after flight to assess actual usage, I'm happy to plan on 15 gph. My JPI engine monitor (love your description of its hopeless ergonomics!) with fuel burn and fuel remaining figures always starts off showing a different fuel compared to my paper log that I keep in flight, but that error reduces as the flight progresses. My legacy fuel gauges get scanned on each Freda check, but most of the trust is in the pre-flight dipstick and engine consumption data. The big gotcha here though is this wouldn't cater for discovering a fuel leak, and as hopefully rare as an issue this might be, really only comparing planned consumption with actual via an accurate gauge is going to help in this case.... short of visibly identifying the leak. Being of a certain age now, the big saving grace is my own personal endurance is somewhat less than my aircraft's fuel endurance, so assuming full fuel and correct tank management, I'm stopping en route somewhat before the engine does!
Who came here for The Lion King's 30th anniversary celebration? Happy 30th anniversary to Disney's animated worldwide phenomenon that changed our lives forever☀️🦁
Nice weather for it.
Not knowing if these are original engines in these aircraft or not, but can you imagine you as a pilot during World War I actually getting in his aircraft and doing battle was so lucky to get it off the ground my heroes are those guys
Very important course .your présentation is clear
Can someone please confirm if this is Chacachacare island in Trinidad and Tobago!
Que Hermosa Musica, bien Interpretada, 🙏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Fantastic video thank you!
Great video! No instructor that I have ever had takes the time to explain in this level of detail how to track the needles.
I dont think they understood what this song is really about xD
You had me after three words! 😂
@@TimothyNathanPPL-IR good one. Doesn't change the fact they dont get it 😂
@@tyraelpl the fact is that both arranger/conductor and singer are very highly educated and qualified musicians. Simon is one of the most sought after orchestrators in London, Mark is an international opera singer whose university dissertation was on the music of Disney. They both knew to the nth degree what the song is about. Those who criticise it for being in a “church” are simply not sufficiently informed. This (entirely secular) concert was organised in a college public room which is used for a variety of purposes including religion but also concerts. This is very common in the UK, where the church is often the largest venue in a community. So these various criticisms are ill-informed and really just self serving “look at me, how clever I think I am” rather than engaging with what is actually clever and artistic, the arrangement and performance.
Thank you!
This was beautiful
This is amazing I’d love to go to this church I’d be singing with them they also did king of pride rock as well
Truly beautiful
Finally a no-nonsense guide to the UK airspace, really informative! Fan of SkyDemon myself and really helps break down some of this before going in!
Mr. Timothy, your instructing style is quite impressive. You serve as a role model for young and novel flight instructors like me to further develop our understanding and teaching abilities. Thank you for sharing this content.
Great video! Please keep'em coming!
Thank you❤ Some good tips!
Phenomenal bravo! That last note was no easy feat!! The singer did amazingly and the orchestra was just…wow. 🎉❤
Excellent Timothy thanks for these videos. My goodness, even as a UK licence holder it's a great recap on procedures for flying around the British Isles and some of our unique airspace procedures. Compared to other parts of Europe, where I do the majority of my flying these days, I can only imagine how mind-boggling and possibly intimidating the UK system must seem, especially to non-native English speaking visitors. Keep up the good work!
Timothy, many of us would like for you to have a presentation on the training and use of Angle of Attack displays. Would that be possible? It has been around since the mid 50's and is being mandated by our FAA for new OEM aircraft in the US.
Not a bad idea. I’ll discuss it with my colleagues. The next four, about visiting the UK from abroad, are set in stone, though.
Give it your best Bloody Go and we will be standing by. Thank you.
If I understand it correctly, the BIR is an interesting interim-step alleviating the way to CB-IR: -When upgrading you don’t have to pass a written exam on the theory again (only an oral one), so you avoid bothering yourself with some of the topics of the CB-IR theory considered irrelevant by many. -You don’t have a minimum requirement of PIC experience so you can start it right away after PPL, making a more productive use of the hours you have to build up. I think this aspect has not been taken into consideration.
The BIR has three exams covering the seven subject areas, and the questions are indeed supposedly more relevant, so the burden is lighter than for the CB-IR, but bear in mind that with fewer questions but the same pass-mark, each question counts for more so there is less tolerance for getting one wrong.
This is fantastic. Tragically few instructors have exercises for students to do which break down a tiny segment of the skill of flying into something which can be practiced independently. The idea of having the student merely practice flying straight and level, then practice changing altitude slightly and precisely; then change airspeed precisely; then change configuration; and in all cases really pay attention to how it affects the attitude of the airplane - 99% of instructors won't do this more than cursorily. 80% of instructors will give you a list of 30 things to do, tell you to do them, then tell you when you've screwed up, and tell you to try again. Maybe one or two out of a dozen will approach /ab initio/ training in a methodical fashion but even there they often rush the student too quickly, which leaves the student discombobulated and "behind the airplane" and hinders the learning process.
Excellent comments. I wish we knew how to get the Flight Training Companies to change their courses to follow this protocol. Change is virtually impossible. For 50 years I have tried to get these companies to train with Angle of Attack Indicators. You can see how that has failed, yet no pilot flying in the military or airlines flies without an AOA. Finally, the OEM has been mandated, by the FAA, to incorporate AOA in new a/c. Timothy is outstanding in his presentation. Hopefully he can teach AOA in the future.
Thank you so much for this video
Great video as always, thanks!
Just excellent. As an Air Force trained and long since retired airline pilot who stumbled onto this channel by accident and curiosity, I found the approach and the tone to be as I first succinctly noted: just excellent. Thank you, R.O. Nelsen
Awesome video thank you!!!
Fantastic, subscribed and I hope you have a lot more like this one!
Thank you. There is a reasonably steady stream. I am working on No.17; 18 in the pipeline…

Great video! Thank you very much!
I wonder if it could be CHACACHACARE, western most of the Bocas Islands, of Trinidad & Tobago, and which was a leper colony. It's just that the large house in these clips looks very, very similar to one in videos I have seen elsewhere online ..... RjB
14:04 "There is some confusion in the EASA rules whether .... so the aircraft is not dipped below the MDA in the go-around." I might merely be adding to the confusion here, but that is not really my intention. To me there are a few indications that you probably are allowed to dip below MDA. One of them is in the easy access rules "GM1 NCO.OP.111" that states "...The approach may be continued to DA/H or the missed approach point (MAPt) (whichever is reached first), at which point a missed approach must be initiated if visual reference is not acquired. There is no MDH for an NPA flown using the CDFA technique. An aircraft may descend briefly below the DH on an NPA flown using the CDFA technique, in the same way as it may on a PA or APV."
The trouble is that that is guidance and isn't 100% aligned with the rest of the material. It's a mess, but everyone does seem to go down to DH, so all's well that ends well....
@@TimothyNathanPPL-IR It is guidance only, I will give you that. The guidance material, however, seems reasonable consistent on this point (IMO). For instance "GM5 CAT.OP.MPA.110" includes an explanation for 'why' this interpretation can be acceptable (basically equivalent level of safety, and reminds us not to blindly set DH = MDH). As a matter of practical use I think I would probably adopt some kind of 'round up' rule, that way I get a nice round DA figure and some cushion all in one. By the way, do you have a link to some EASA material that suggests otherwise. I am not adept at navigating these kinds of documents, but curious none the less.

Hello Nathan, 1. Thanks for your videos! 2. How can it be permitted to fly an overlay approach enheter the underlying NAVAID is out of service? You must still use it for FAS? Ref 8:56 in the video
Yes, maybe it could have been phrased better. But I mean the situation where the ILS procedure is NDB based (which is very common). Under Part NCO, that can now be flown without an ADF, but obviously not without ILS. An NDB approach is not permitted without an ADF, because of the FAS. Sorry, I could have been clearer.
@@TimothyNathanPPL-IR , great that clarified it and also deepened the understanding. That means I can fly the ILS RWY33 at ESGT under regulatory compliance with PG out-of-service, using the GNSS PG as locator. P.S. Joined PPL/IR by the way!
@@flyga100 Delighted to welcome you to PPL/IR. There seems to be only one procedure in the ESGT ILS 33 overlay, I assume the Cat C, so it will take you a minute longer.
