Adaptive Bass Clarinet - Quick Tour
This bass clarinet belongs to a player that can't use the left hand pinky keys, and requested that thumb levers be added to control those mechanisms. Watch me try to explain how those new levers work and the design principles behind them.

Adaptive Left-hand Alto Sax, version 2
Переглядів 4612 роки тому
The second left-hand-only sax to be modified here at the shop, this one is keyed to play all the way down to Low C using a combination of pinky keys (F#, F, and E) and thumb keys (D, Eb, C, and C#). That means this sax can play the full range of a regular saxophone except for Low B and Low Bb. The pinky mechanisms were set up several years ago by Brian Russell at Russell Winds, who mentored me ...
Spinning a cork aperture pad

This is the process I typically use for fitting cork pads that have a hole in the middle (aperture) on oboes. Credit to Jeff's Woodwind Shop, who I'm pretty sure was the person who originated this technique.

Don't know why I said that. This Selmer Mark 6 alto sax has been modified to be operated with only the left hand, and can play ...

Maintaining Your Oboe at Home

UPDATE: The unidentified material I held up for cleaning pads/tone holes is called Pellon Fusible Interfacing. I think it's used for adhering pieces of fabric together by heating under an iron. Thanks to Jan Buneta in Toronto for identifying it! He's at www.trumpetguy.ca/. I bow down to you.....GREAT JOB!
Well Done!
Bravo. Pretty amazing!
Sensacional, parabéns gostaria de saber sobre esse seu suporte pode me ajudar m, saudações do Brasil
Dude that’s almost a trumpet
Creating the Left Hand F mechanism was genius. Bravo and well done you!
anything different with other Oboe?
Thanks for showing this? How much would an overhaul cost generally?
I notice the right hand keys continue to move while you play the notes with your left hand. Is it still possible to play the notes with the default fingerings with this system? If so then it's brilliant. You basically have alternate fingerings for every note that use the right hand. Excellent work sir.
You can play down to Low D using the standard fingerings, though it feels klunky because of all the extra mechanisms following along with the movements.
@@KeystoneMusicRepair I'm a bassoonist so I'm used to things feeling clunky 😂 Excellent work again!
wow the high notes sounds like an oboe
Good vid except for one thing... That's your right hand on a left hand only saxophone
The video is mirrored.
I knew that
This is a mirrored video. The writing on the dark blue box/book below the table has the writing from right to left
I hate having my left hand higher than my right.
IMAGINE IF LEO GETS THIS IN A BARI!!! HIS ONE HAND PLAYING WOULD BE EVEN BETTER!!!
damn imagine that on a tenor or bari that shit would get heavy as hell
Very nice
thanks, this was a delight to watch, the explanations mixed with humourous approaches are really entertaining and informative
me gustaría escuchar los altísimos en tu sax saludos
That’s awesome John!!
Thanks, Katy!! Always nice to get a compliment from someone I admire 😄
yo sound amazing for not a saxophonist
Nice
about that Pellon Fusible Interfacing, Doesn't that leave a sticky substance on the pads. My mother used to use is for making clothes and it stuck on fabric when she ironed it. Ok I'm not going to iron my oboe, but it makes me think there is something sticky in there.
I always look for if songs can be played with one hand on my sax And i get very exited if i cani dont know why
Get your patent immediately!
And start getting royalties ❤
Congratulations! I hope you meet you one day!
Very nice work. Creative and well though out. Wonderful that players can continue to perform after debilitating changes in their health.
Isn't that the right hand?
Huh, the video got mirrored somehow. It is the left hand, though, despite appearances to the contrary.
U ARE SO FREAKING TALENTED
Coffee filters work well. Tip from Ko Kaiden.
This is absolutely amazing. Availability for all!
Wow...cant wait to see it being played in one full song
DUDE THAT IS SO COOL!!!! I LOVE IT
Genial!!!
That is sweet!!!
So cool! Would love to give it a try 😁 cheers from Portugal! 🎷
Can it be played with both hands too?
Huh, good question. The F#, F, and E are activated by rockers, so they could be played with the right hand and it would feel pretty much the same, maybe a little clunky. The Eb, D, and C are permanently attached to the new mechanisms by Minibals, so you could activate them with the right hand but you'd also be "pulling" the new mechanisms along so it would feel heavy from all that extra mass. The C# can only be played with the thumb mechanism, and the Low B and Bb can't be played at all because their touchpieces were repurposed for the F#, F, and E. I have a video that goes into a little more detail here: ua-cam.com/video/Sz4O8Oh8NqE/v-deo.html
Can you manufacture a sax which has right hand up and left hand down ?
Hey bro is that a left handed sax ? Where can i get it if I want ? Please let me know I'm really looking for a left sax and can't find it anywhere.
It's probably mirrored video
This is a mirrored video. The writing on the dark blue box/book below the table has the writing from right to left
I am a saxophonist and my god I want it when will you start manufacturing lol
Incredible🎶🎶🎶🎷
Whats the point?😂🤣
Imagine someone had only one arm
It's that sharp thing on the top of your head.
@@s.g.r.2773 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was always curious as to how those saxes were designed & played. Thanks!!
You can play a high f sharp if you use the bis key
Awesome ❤👍🎷
That is freaking awesome man!
That's amazing 👏. Get your patent...
😲 wow
Wow, what an amazing piece of work, very interesting! Two questions: The side B flat key is also just left on there for cosmetic reasons? Is it playable for a two-handed person like the low C and E flat seem to be? Also, how do you play a D in the upper octave? Do you have to press the octave key and also one of the new touch pieces?
The side Bb isn't in the way, so it's easier to leave it in place. It could be used by someone who has the use of both hands, the same is true with the side F#. Upper octave D can be played with just the palm key (no octave key), which is how the owner of this sax has been playing it, however the intonation is spotty. Now he also has the option of fingering a low D and adding the palm key, which essentially acts as an octave key for just that fingering. You could also lip it up if your embouchure is strong enough. It's not really possible to reach the octave key while playing any of the other thumb keys.
Thanks for the info!
That's amazing.
