    Very glad to find more people talking about this movie. I do think it could have been better, there's some tonal inconsistencies, notabley the sauna death scene feels like it belongs in a slasher movie, but I'll chalk that up to the film's troubled production. I'd love if someone made a video about how they'd personally improve upon the movie. This is the first video of yours I've watched. Would you consider analyzing Annihilation? I think it's another quality cosmic horror film that's woefully underexposed.

    not a bad movie. i think they tried to do too many things and probably lost some audience, but I was able to follow it. ofc the ending is not as good as the movie, but that's usually the case. this stands out to me because there was some decent acting and some interesting paths were travelled. i just don't think it came together for everyone in the end. i enjoyed it, but I too left the movie wanting. maybe it's time for a rewatch.

    Just came across your video and thought it was great...I've been a fan of this film for a few years now and always enjoy a good analysis of it; I especially appreciated you differentiating between what the empty man is and the being that inhabits/merges with the empty man as many a commentator uses them interchangeably; I would say the actual being most closely resembles Lovecraft's creation Nyarlathotep, also fittingly called The Crawling Chaos; there is one scene that still eludes me...towards the end James is at or maybe just recalling being at the Pontifex Institute and the group is chanting/blowing into the bottles, James emerges from a doorway and then looks up and seems to see himself standing on the walkway above...I suppose it might just be his mind trying to come to grips with what he is but it's a headscratcher among many headscratchers. Anyway, really enjoyed the video.

    Hey man, thanks for the video. I would like to copy and paste a great comment I read on Chris Stuckmann's video analisys of this film: "@mikeduke57 I watched this a few nights ago and then watched it again two days later. I loved it from the opening scene and that creepy ass weird skeleton in the cave and its effect on them. I loved the cult aspects because i love creepy cult stuff too. (In fact, the guy who plays Paul in this movie, Aaron Poole plays in one of my favorite cult movies, The Conspiracy.) But the first time i watched it, near the end when the empty man attacks James, that was when my whole perception of what was going on changed. You see the head of the Empty Man push through the fabric and change into a long, thick whip like appendage before it pours itself into his mouth and enters him. That whiplike appendage, kind of giant tongue like, is a pretty unique design i recognized right away. I instantly knew what it was. Nyarlathotep. H. P. Lovecraft's creation. Also known as the Bloody Tongue, the Black Pharoah, and the Crawling Chaos. He's also the entity who is known as the Messenger. He pops up in different places throughout time setting up cults and communicating secrets to man etc. The empty man transmits, we receive. Sounded like a perfect fit to me. So, after i finished the movie, I did a search online and found a Reddit thread where someone posited the same premise months ago. Several people agreed with the premise, but one person said that at the end of the scene where the cultists are chanting around the fire, that they actually chant Nyarlathotep's name. I was like, "you gotta be fucking kidding me", right??? So, I went and watched that scene again, and damn if it wasn't so! Right after they're chanting and the flames of the fire rise up into the sky and James looks up and the stars warp, when he looks back down and the fire has settled back to burning normal, as the cultists walk around the fire for about 9 seconds, they ACTUALLY chant Nyarlathotep. No shit. They did it in monotone, individual syllables. Ny-ar-lat-ho-tep ... Ny-ar-lat-ho-tep ... Ny-ar-lat-ho-tep ... Three times they say his name and then that's when they stop chanting and the lights go out. Blew me away and made me love this movie even more. It is definitely cosmic horror, and not just cosmic horror but one of the best movies ever to incorporate Lovecraft mythos material. At the same time, its not heavy handed and can be appreciated by people who don't even recognize that part of it because of how well they subtly mixed the mythos of H. P. Lovecraft in with the eastern philosophy concepts of the Tulpa and manifesting thoughts - Thought + Repetition + Time = Flesh. This move is a friggin masterpiece and an amazing work of storytelling and cinematic art. I absolutely love it." And they are telling the truth, I went back to the scene and heard it myself. It makes the best scene of the movie even better. What a great, great film.

    This is great, one of a kind movie. Besides the excellent acting, cinematography and engrossing story line, It's a paranoia inducing mood piece that is haunting, disturbing and truly gets under your skin. It stay's with you long after you've seen it and can't quite put your finger on why. Truly a film out of it's time--- and perhaps that is why it failed. Too bad it never received the 4K Blu-ray release that it deserves --- it's been abandoned by the studio in every way and that is a true shame. Thanks Jeremy for this this entertaining summary and analysis of this truly memorable film --- great job.

    I think that dogs don't just represent women, but represent all actors who try and enter into the Hollywood system. The women and men get treated differently: women adopted and used, men wandering around like strays. I think one thing that gets overlooked is how much the dog imagery is placed on Sam, too. He's not just doing it doggy style, holding onto dog treats, and emitting odd scents because everyone else is a dog; he's doing it because he's also a dog. It also explains the position of The Homeless King as a "guard dog" to the elites, a stray that gets fed scraps and who, like the women, can smell something is weird about Sam. And perhaps Sam is also a killer of dog rivals, afraid to become a stray. It's a dog eat dog world, much like Sara seems to do.

    Owl is symbol of divine dark feminine, from Innana to Athena... therefore it is perhaps a basic theme of this movie. Threatening, underworld elements of the feminine. 3 women = triple goddess, which presents as virgin, mother and crone. Although no crones in this movie, there are a cop, an older bird woman, barking women, knee-to-groin woman.

    "I'm a pragmatic prevaricator, with a propensity for oratorical seniority, which is too pleonastical to be expeditiously assimilated by any of your unequivocal veracities." I like the interpretation that he's just saying he's an actor. I think that's correct, and I also feel like maybe it's doing double duty. Since he's a sort of Christ-like character, I think he's saying that he speaks a Truth that is outside the knowledge of our mortal truths-sort of a classic metaphysics thing. We could read "pragmatic prevaricator" as a person who lies when it's convenient. But we can also read "pragmatic" as if he is lying about reality itself, what we think of as sensible and earthly. In that way, it would make sense that what he says is hard to fit in with our own truths, what he calls "your unequivocal veracities." So another interpretation of what he's saying might be: "I speak about reality differently. My teachings are naturally superior. But my teachings are too complex, so it's hard to swallow."

    About Memory Gospel Nonsense: I think Boxer's referring to the ability to speak telepathically with all the other bleeders, which ties perfectly into how he and Ronald met in their dreams. In a way, he's confirming that all of the people speaking in his head (the gospel) are true. This also ties in with how Jericho Cane, in "The Power," is described as being schizophrenic. The voices he hears, however, are not "false" voices cause by schizophrenia; they are true gospel. I think that this moment is one where Boxer is relating to Ronald and sort of piecing together what's happening, realizing that he's not crazy, and that the stuff he remembers is part of a higher truth... maybe?

  • @Merlandese
    @Merlandese Місяць тому

    About Ronald Mirror Scene: I am def on board with the idea that it is his ability to bleed being demonstrated. The mirrors have a minor delay, but if you assume that delay gets bigger and bigger with more "bleeding", then eventually you will be seeing something that happened far (in time) from when you are looking at it.
