7:18: even if the transformers are for a second megapack, there would still be a need for additional backup power for the compute cluster. The numbers I remember hearing in the past were the megapack having about a 240MWh, while the compute cluster would consume 500MW, yielding less than a half hour of runtime. Either they’re planning on just doing a quick shutdown in case of a power failure, or there are some large generators yet to be installed somewhere.

@@Frank-gt7me My guess and it is just a guess at this point is they are replacement transformers for the existing Megapack installation. As you correctly point out, the Megapacks wouldn't make a good backup power source. There is a permit for UPS units in the south expansion, but there will likely be backup diesel generators as well. With the UPS only providing power long enough to start the generators.

@@DavidJohnson-tv2nn After some further research, full power backup for the compute cluster may not be practical. I checked the Austin Energy site and discovered the max output capacity of their Sand Hill generating plant across the river is 595MW. Couldn’t easily find the total cost, but the first 300MW was completed in 2004 for $177 million, and the other 300MW was added later. I just don’t see Tesla building one of those. Maybe the plan is to mostly run the cluster during the times that wholesale electric rates are near or below zero.

7:18 Yep, I noticed that too. I will have to revise my speculation that they will be used for the data center. Though the data center will need about 24 transformers at some point. That is... Based on the conduit count in the new duct-banks being constructed on the north end.

@@DavidJohnson-tv2nn 7:18. 3 possible options. Bess transformers will be replaced. The BESS is doubling in size. Stand-alone BESS of the same size (a remote UPS, which may explain the structure at the ductbanks intersection.

@@DessieDoolan My guess would be the first option. Replacement for the BESS transformers. Speculation for the structure at the duct-bank intersection.... Remote switching rather than a remote UPS. 1) The structure is about the right size for two container sized switchgear buildings to be placed on top. 2) If you look at the cables stretched outside the vaults @ 11:50 there is enough length to pass right through the Mega-vault and reach the transformer busbars on the right. In this scenario, cables simply pass through the Mega-vault with switching taking place remotely. Megapacks as a UPS.... 1 ) There is already a permit for UPS units in the south expansion. 2) Megapacks are very expensive and while they would last longer than a conventional UPS, they wouldn't work very well as a backup power source. I believe the existing Megapack installation is rated at 262 megawatt hours. Which would provide less than 2 hours of backup power to the data center if it's power consumption is 130 MW. Diesel generators are cheaper and will provide power as long as there is fuel. Of course, this is speculation and I could be wrong.

Extra BESS is reasonable given they doubled the GPU count from 50k to 100k. Cortex isn't going to be running full tilt 24/7 but rather likely at night or weekends when the load is reduced due no to production.

@@memrjohnno Even at a power consumption of 130 MW of for the data center, the Megapacks wouldn't make much difference, that is less then two hours of power for the data center. And they don't generate power, only store it. So they would have to be charged from the same grid that powers the data center, placing an additional load on it.

I think they have taken most of them out? So, did they forget to install something under the floor? or like you say weak panels.

@@DavidJohnson-tv2nn It looks like they're planning to reuse them. I don't think they would stack them so neatly otherwise. There is some damage on the end where the brackets were attached. It could be they damaged the utilities while driving the panels into the tunnel. Joe kept saying the utilities were in the bottom 1/8 of the tunnel. Depending on how smooth the incline under the highway went it's possible the telehandler bottomed out like a sports car turning to fast into shopping mall parking lot. I'm curious what they were planning to do with the two piles of dirt that appeared in the August 1st video. It looks like they used some of it but maybe moved the rest back out of the way.

The white cabinets I believe are transformers. You need to step down the voltage on the incoming wires to something that can feed the computers and UPS system, and probably all of the pumps.

@@DessieDoolan Yep the white cabinets @ 1:54 are transformers and the number of them (22) is about right. The new duct-banks from the substation to the building have a capacity for 24 three-phase circuits (assuming one circuit per conduit). Good catch! Of course, I completely missed it because I skip over the ugly material storage areas. 😊

7:30. Yes it is. I'm sure I saw these in one of the other TBC videos. Could never find it again. These should disappear under an asphalt road surface. Not visible in Jeff's Las Vegas tunnel drive through for example.

We can see this in a positive light, in the sense that TBC could have finished their part by end July. But obviously there are higher powers at work in this complex construction area. I can see several bears on the road, such as the south extension project needing to clear the area around the inside tunnel terminal. Has not happened yet. Then the power-, the control- , the emergency systems all need to be operational. And what else must be done for a co-ordinated effort to shift the entire flow of CT's into the tunnel? We have no idea, really. I must say that my initial observation that the concrete floor elements were moving slowly was clearly wrong, because later on the floor elements were going in rapidly. So let us give TBC a bit of credit and thank them for the exciting show they have put up for us! A further thought: it is known that there is an incredible focus on the production line efficiency; things are measured in seconds for continuous improvements. In such an environment I think a cavalier approach like help-yourself-there-is-the-tunnel-entrance-and-watch-out-for-construction is just not on. No, the tunnel must become an extension in every sense of the word of the highly orchestrated production line(s). That is going to take time. If the big push in production starts say end'24 (4680 ramp) then that seems a good target for the tunnel to be functionally ready and fully part of the production systems.

Not knocking the guy but about everything he projects (or his companies) turns out to be either a bit, substantially or way late. Just get used to it, it's not going to change.

July of which year? I think absent the fact that one end of the tunnel is in the middle of a much larger construction site, they might have made July of 24. But with that said, they should have added a large asterisk to that statement.

Why were the floors so heavily reinforced with screw piles and caps just for a fire escape? Sure they are fire escapes? Maybe something heavy like a mega pack is going there?

@@franklinmargolis2051 Speculating there will be a road, or at least a paved apron around the building. Passage roof therefore would need to be trafficable, and that load needs to be taken by a suitable footing.

While I was flying a helicopter landed. Then later they stop traffic to let who it ever was visiting pass by.

There is never a convoy of them. It is alway random them leaving the factory.

What is interesting is just across the road is the site that Tesla considered for building the Gigafactory.

So what you think it going to be. Within a few years batteries will be greatly improve and there will be much more charging infrastructure. You should read about some of the recent breakthroughs with batteries.

They said the same about the horseless carriage not long ago.

@@rayc.8555 Latest Munro podcast is with John Stokes and Fiorenzo Dioni from IDRA. Well worth the listen. Towards the end they talk about one of reasons 'horseless carriages' were developed and quickly became accepted, was the huge pollution caused by the horse population.
