SE Electronics 4100 Review | Audio Quality Test | Mic Comparison
SE Electronics, SE 4100 microphone Review, Audio Quality Test and Mic Comparison. This seriously might be the best budget condenser microphone you can get for podcasting, voice over, live streaming, content creation, voice acting or anything else, it seriously sounds like a much more expensive microphone, the SE 4100 microphone sounds amazing for only 350 dollars which is a super cheap price in the microphone world, especially for one that sounds this good. the SE 4100 has excellent sound quality and sounds very natural to my ear, get one here - amzn.to/4bYUupv

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews День тому

      Edit, I missed the part where you said arm I thought you were asking about what microphone I normally use personally but hey I'll just leave that whole reply but as far as microphone arms go right now I'm using the road PSA1 +. For a regular style boom arm and I have a low profile maono arm that I use sometimes if I need a second bloom or more for some reason don't want to have the boom arm in the camera. That depends on what I'm doing with it, if I need a microphone for outdoors I grab this Sennheiser MKE 600, if I'm making videos for my gaming UA-cam channels at my desk I've currently started using the new SE electronics 4100 as my main microphone, every review I watched on that and every person I spoke to the had one just loves it so I was like all right I got to get one of these, probably going to have a review coming up for that tomorrow, for the last several months I've been using an Neumann microphone but I think he has the electronics is my new go to, now when I'm live streaming I'm normally not sitting at my desk I usually lay back and relax it's going to be playing for a few hours and the last couple of streams I decided to pull up my SE electronics V7 handheld microphone just cuz it's small and really good at not picking up background noise and stuff like that and I believe those are going to be my new main microfilms until I find something better. If you're looking for a indoor microphone and you've got enough stuff in your room or some acoustic treatment so you don't have to worry so much about excessive amounts of reverb I would highly suggest taking a look at the SE 4100, that company hand makes their capsules here in the United States, the rest of the Mike's probably made elsewhere but their capsules are handmade in the United States and you're not just getting the same cheap capsule that a lot of microphones are using as they design them and make their own and I made for 350 bucks it's freaking crazy good, but hopefully tomorrow I'll have the review finished, it's not tomorrow sometime in the next couple of days I should have that posted but if you're looking for an indoor microphone for a general use that thing is just killer or speaking or singing, I haven't really tried to record any instruments with it though so I can't really tell you how well it does for recording instruments but it's great for speaking or singing I've also been using the road pod mic a little bit for my live streams but I think I'm switching to the SC electronics combo of the 4100 and V7 is my main microphones on my other UA-cam channels

      @@dannylightning-audio-reviews Thanks for the reply. Appreciated. I already have the MKE 600. I mostly make talking head videos and my room is not treated (even the least bit). Hence I do tend to pick up some reverb and room tone... in addition to sibilance. In hindsight I think it was a bad purchase decision. It was highly recommended in a online workshop that I had taken via On Screen Authority. Having a nightmare with the microphone since I got it... and not getting any guidance either. Hence thought of checking with you. :) I was using a desk stand. I was thinking of changing the way the microphone is mounted. I noticed you have mounted it higher and have it pointing downwards. I was trying to figure out a way to replicate that positioning (was finding it difficult with the microphone arm I have... which is super cheap). Any other guidance around microphone technique would also be highly appreciated.

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 10 годин тому

      The MK 600 is a great microphone, any microphone in a non-treated room is going to pick up reverb and the further away you have it from your face means you have to turn the gain up higher and you will get more room noise in reverb as well as the microphone gets further away I have about a hundred squares of f stoppers acoustic foam that I got off of Amazon, and it cuts out most of the reverb for my room as long as I don't get too far away from the microphone. I probably could have built real acoustic panels myself for around the same price for maybe cheaper but since I don't own my house and I can't put holes in the walls and stuff I just got some food and hung it up with those little 3M command strips so I had to buy a whole bunch of command strips lol some acoustic foam and there's also a bed in the room so that sucks up a lot of reverb as well and then I put a rug down on the floor so carpeting and soft surfaces like chairs couches beds plus a little bit of foam on the wall in front of you to your left and the right and is much foam as you can get on the walls behind you will work pretty well The only reason I don't use the shotgun mics indoors is it the microphone does pick up reverb sometimes it gets a little weird phasing issues but most people would probably never really notice that it really is a nice microphone, they may be designed for outdoor use but hey. A lot of people do use these indoors and some rooms might have a pleasing sounding reverb I mean generally you don't want any reverb for spoken word vocals but hey you got to use what you got sometimes, I don't really have an issue with sibilance on most microphones but they do make deesser plugins to help make a siblant voice not sound so harsh, you can also learn to speak differently I mean when the tongue hits the top of your mouth or pushes up against your teeth that can make your s's sound a lot more hard so if you can kind of pay attention to what your tongues doing as you're saying your s sounds you can kind of be conscious about not letting it hit the front of your teeth or the roof of your mouth as much as possible and that will cut down the sibilant sounds big time and if you practice that enough eventually you'll probably get in the habit of doing it without even thinking about it, there may be some other ways to help with sibilance as well but I'm not like a speech therapist I just know that one trick to not being as sibilant also putting the microphone off to the side and maybe up a little higher it won't pick up as much siblings as well compared to somebody who's putting the microphone directly in front of their face and their speaking right into the capsule app perfect mouth level

      The plugin's so simple there's not much to say other than press the button, move the dial, and it should remove any bad frequencies that it hears, I'm sure there are some people out there that could have made a 3-hour video out of it lol part of me wonder is the three or three and a half seconds it listens long enough seems like it should give it at least like 10 or 15 seconds but hey maybe that's all it needs I don't know, I can definitely hear a difference, I didn't notice much at first but the more I listen to the clip I made with and without the changes I started noticing oh yeah it removed that little flaw there that little flaw there so it's definitely doing something and making it sound a little cleaner. Having a mostly treated room and a good quality microphone but you probably don't have as many resonating frequencies as you might get another rooms but still I could definitely hear it doing something that made it sound just a little bit nicer, I figure if it can do that for a good recording then it can probably find some unwanted junk on other recordings as well and hopefully fix them

    Hello, nice video :) Did you do a plug and play test or a sonar clearcast on, test ? :)

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 4 дні тому

      I don't use software that changes the way your audio sounds, as somebody who's been working with audio for years I truly feel that any type of recording you do should be as clean as possible with nothing altering the audio and after you've done the recording if changes need to be made you can go on to your editing software and use professional plugins to change the way the sound is but what I'm doing microphone reviews there's no editing at all other than adjusting volumes to make sure it's at the right volume for UA-cam, but software like the clear cast and voice meter and all that stuff I avoid those things as I think they degrade the audio quality more than they help them, once you make a recording whatever changes you've done to it during the recording you can't remove those, they're there forever which is why I don't suggest recording with something that can change the way the audio sounds but I use these headphones everyday for talking to my friends on discord, they sound decent for music I mean if I really want to listen to music he's probably wouldn't be my top pick for any critical listening but they do make most music sound pretty nice but if you're like an audio enthusiast or audio file you might not love the way they sound for music but overall I think they're just a really good headphone for gaming, chatting with your buddy and they're more than acceptable enough for music for the average person, I like these things

      You're welcome, if your live streaming or something like that you may need to use some plugins or processing but during a recording I just can't fix that if you mess it up and like I said for microphone reviews I imagine people just want to hear the microphone with no changes, I guess I could have said something like that in the first place instead of brightening a book but I don't know lol

      Personally I think these tusq headphones are great, they sound decent, they're not super expensive, they're comfortable, they have a boom mic that sounds way better than any set of headphones that doesn't have a boom mic, and the boom mic is removable so I think they're totally worth getting if you want something that's wired and you just want to chat with your buddies and get overall decent sound quality I mean if you're looking for really high-end audio quality with a boom mic you're probably going to want to look at like some of the audio-Technica headsets with a boom mic but those are like full headsets to cover your ears and everything, I'm not sure if anybody makes a super high quality set of inier monitors with a boom mic but there might be something like that out there, but for the $40 that I paid for these I'm very happy with them and I used them everyday and I'm actually using them right now, I'm speaking into the phone and it types it out and I get way less misspellings and stuff when I do it this way compared to using a regular set of earbuds with the microphone that does not a boom mic, it misspells words and doesn't hear me correctly a lot but with a little boom mic the thing that I speak into that types it out almost always gets the words right, almost, I do like the tusk headphones I wish more companies would start making earbuds with boom mixs

      That's probably something you would want to ask their customer support, I don't work for them and I don't stay in constant contact with them, have spoken with them a few times about this and that but I'm not really sure if they're going to be making this software available for any of their other audio interfaces but I hope they do because the software is really nice, they just keep making really good improvements to it, if you saw the latest video I made on the 2x2 they actually allow you to make presets for microphones now which is awesome, that's something I asked from for and they contact me back and said hey we added those presets, I think they could have done it slightly different but it's still a really good deal. Yeah that's a question you'd probably have to send to their support team because I have no idea but that would be great if they start making them available for other things, maybe I can try and suggest that to them,

      I don't know, either my thumbnails and titles aren't catching people's attention or UA-cam is recommending my videos to people who aren't interested in this type of thing which I've heard a lot of people saying this is what UA-cam does for smaller channels, they've got a team that's supposed to help promote smaller channels and try and get them out there for people to see but it sounds like they're showing them to the wrong audience for example they might be showing my videos to somebody who only really cares about guitar videos or drum videos instead of people who care about microphones or podcasting or voiceover so it sounds like they're showing a lot of these videos to the wrong audience and that's making it hard for smaller channels to get anywhere but anyways I don't know That's just my educated guess by what I've noticed and what I've heard a lot of other people saying about the way tubes algorithm is currently promoting smaller channels so they're probably showing my videos to the wrong audience but anyways thank you I appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you liked the video

      Yeah I mean if you can get over that it's a okay looking camera for the money but it definitely has a little bit of noise, when you zoom in the noise gets kind of bad but if you don't need to zoom in then there's a lot less noise, but if you notice when it's following me around the room it zooms in more so that must be a digital zoom because digital zoom is always add extra noise but unfortunately you almost need to get a real camera if you're looking for really high quality, I mean there's a couple of webcams out there that look pretty nice but none of them can do the same thing as something like a Sony ZV e10 or something like that ran through a capture card I guess the newest version of that Sony doesn't require the capture card you can just plug it in with USB and it'll do 4K video but it's a little expensive unfortunately

    Nice review! I'm not a mic guy, but from your comparison, this Samson and the SM57 were most neutral. They are perfect when you don't want to draw attention to your voice, but keep the listener focused on the message. To me, that's what you want to aim for, unless you want a signature sound (which is perfect for some radio voices). The USB input was surprising! I think that analog out is always going to be an important option so that you can tweak the sound or crank the gain in a mixer or preamp. So With this samson you have the choice.

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video, if you're listening on something like studio monitors that let you hear every little detail you will hear a lot more flaws in the Samson but the overall tone is very pleasing and for the money if you need a handheld that's XLR and USB I think it's a very good choice, be sure microphones definitely offer a improvement in sound quality for a little bit extra but you don't get the USB so I guess it really comes down to what you need, I think they both sound very nice overall, Yes some microphone is trying to give you a very flat sound others try and give you a finish sound but the flatter microphones often take EQ better, personally I'd rather have something that sounded a little flat and then if I needed a little extra base or high indoor presence boost I could do that myself compared to a company trying to give you what they think is going to work for most people but not every microphone works for every person, My voice doesn't sound as lively as some people's I'd rather have a more neutral sound where I can boost the high-end where I need it cuz I definitely have lot more energy in those lower mid-range frequencies that I do in the high end so I prefer something that's flat instead of trying to boost the lows or high-end for me so yeah, a flat frequency response is a good thing to have

    I don't currently have good enough speakers to detect any differences. Was the MV7+ better than the SM57?

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 10 днів тому

      They both have a different sound, which one you like better is really going to be subjective and which one sounds better on your voice is also a different story, I think the SM-58 it's a nice flat response and sounds pretty natural, something like the MV7 Plus has more of that warmer podcast type of sound, now on USB the MV7 Plus doesn't sound very good but they're working on a firmware update to change the way it sounds a little bit after some of us microphone reviewers complained but I think on XLR it sounds pretty Nice, does it sound a couple of hundred dollars better I'm not so sure, You're saying you don't have something to listen on that'll let you hear any major differences and that's the case for a lot of people, now I can listen to microphone comparisons on my home stereo and I hear some various slight differences but when listening on some studio monitors or monitor headphones That's when I can really start to hear the major differences and sound so most people aren't going to be listening on something where they hear that big of a difference, I mean you definitely want to make sure you're getting a a nice quality microphone because a real cheap piece of crap will sound like a cheap piece of crap but some of the nicer budget microphones sound pretty good and most name brand microphone sound really good but I could probably talk into a $99 handheld microphone and a $3,000 studio microphone and the majority of people probably wouldn't notice that much of a difference but some will

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 11 днів тому

      nope, it wont effect the recording but there is a pretty good chance you will want to monitor something your recording at some point and its can make things a little weird. this interface has unusual controls and was not perfect but seemed to sound pretty descent, i think there are a lot of budget options these days so look around, do some research and try and figure out what will be best for you in the price rand you can afford.

      @@dannylightning-audio-reviews Ok good to hear that at least the recording isn't affected. Do you have some suggestions for some audio interfaces that are in the low-mid range budget. • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 11 днів тому

      Modern interfaces are all going to be comparable what you want to look for is one with a nice amount of gain on the preamps, a lot of them are coming out with higher gain preamps allow you to run gain hungry microphones like the SM7B without having to match your preamps but I think the best bang for the buck is probably the Scarlet 2i2 fourth generation, it gives you about 70 decibels of gain, really good digital to analog converters, the preamps are very clean, it's got a great headphone amp, Nice software which allows you to control the interface directly from the PC and they even added if you need things to the software that will allow you to make presets and stuff like that which you can't do on the interface itself so they've been improving the software, I just released My second review video for that interface a couple days back because I've been using for pretty much a year now and it's the one that I use all the time. I'm not having any major problems with it just one minor issue that I talk about in the video that most people probably won't ever have and I don't get any skips or stuttering during the recording when using OBS studio like I do on some other interfaces so I have just been really happy with this one Now some of these interfaces will come with more bells and whistles like built-in compressors, a prayer that allows you to drive it to add some saturation in there if you don't want a 100% clean recording And stuff like that but a lot of those start getting up into the more expensive side, another interface I really love is the SSL 2 Plus, it just doesn't have as much gain available as the Scarlet, but it sounds great it has a monitor mix right on the interface which is awesome it's got some midi hookups on the back which the Scarlet does not unless you buy the next step up on the A lot of people do it by an interface that only hooks up one mic and then they regret it and end up buying a second one so it's totally worth buying one that hooks up two microphones in my opinion you never know when you might want to record a second microphone or have a guest. There's a lot of interfaces out there and there's a lot of new ones coming out and some of them are quite interesting but if you're looking to spend around 200 bucks I would probably look at one of those two interfaces right there but I'm a big fan of the Scarlet at the moment,

      how do some youtubers sound amazing, ill break this down for you and its probably not what you think, A nice 100 dollar mic recorded in a properly sound treated room will often sound better than a 1200 dollar mic recorded in a big empty reverb filled room as you will hear more of the reverb than the actual voice sometimes if the room has lots of echo. So A nice microphone recorded in a good room will give you excellent recording quality but there is one catch, Some people have a really great sounding voice and good speaking technique and some people do not which makes a huge difference. my voice sounds ok but its never going to sound as good as some people, maybe if i took singing and or acting lessons as they can tech you how to do different thing with your voice.. my voice actor friend could talk into anything and make it sound good, he says his voice did not always sound that way but he practiced speaking so much his microphone voice just kind of turned into his speaking voice and he said it took years and years to prefect but that is why huge companies like Crayola hire the guy. if you take a voce like that you can early have a Scarlett solo audio interface and a really good cheap mike like a audio technica AT2020 and sound amazing, change the mic to a U87 or a Soyuz 013 and you now have amazing when you have a good voice and especially a trained voice.. now if i spoke into that u87 in a perfect room it would sound very good but only as good as my voice actually is. but a good chape mic will sound one way, a really expensive mic will sound another way, for example the Q2U sounds great as it has a pleasing tone but i hear lots of flaws with that mic but your average person might not notice them as they don't really know what to listen for but the more you work with audio if your listening on something capable of reproducing the recording in full quality you will start to notice these things. and remember you tube compresses the audio quality down a bit to save space so its never as good on youtube as the original recording. go listen to the microphone assassin youtube channel or even the youtuer called audio haze and you will hear 2 people with nice microphes that have really good speaking voices which make them sound even better than you average person will, listen to me and you hear my ok voice in a decently treated room. i don't have that amazing sound speaking voice so i wont sound as good as those guys so there is really a lot of factors and what your listening tot he audio on makes a huge difference in what you hear as well.

      You're welcome, everybody has different vocal cords and if you have one of those doll kind of dark sounding voice is it's hard to get those sounding good but if you've got a nice if you've got a nice speaking voice, learn some vocal techniques and vocal warm ups just like professional singers to you before they go play a concert or record an album and you're recording in the good room you should be able to send really nice I mean honestly when you're doing processing it should be very small The recording should be 90 to 95% ready to post The processing is just to add that little bit extra or fix any problems from your room or your microphone I mean some rooms or some microphones may pick up a couple of little resonating frequencies that sound bad or something along the lines of that if your voice sounds a little muddy you can cut that out or if you're lacking the high end you can add a little bit in, but generally less is more when it comes to you processing and speaking voice, getting good at EQ work is the hardest part on a speaking voice and some of the stuff that seems like it would be super complicated like compression is really the easy part mean for a voice however you can pretty much sit up any compressor the exact same way and after that you just turn the dial to tell it how much compression you actually want and bam you're good to go but EQ is a waste the hard part on a speaking voice especially when you get into the subtract if EQ and stuff like that, I'm not extremely good at the subtractive EQ but if you're really good at finding those bad frequencies and removing just that specific frequency I can really make your recording sound nice.

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 14 днів тому

      It's very hard to tell if somebody which microphone they should buy, the pd200x does have software available so when you're using it on USB, it'll give you a compressor a limiter a very basic EQ and a couple of other things, This is very nice to have and when you save the settings it'll save them to the microphone that way next time you plug it into another computer those settings will still be on there. So the PD 200x does have an advantage there, I do feel like it's a very nice sounding microphone but I feel like the AM8 sounds just a little bit smoother, to me it's a little bit more of a pleasing tone, I think the PD 200x is a little bit brighter but also has that nice warm podcast or broadcast sound, and the M8 sounds to have a little bit flatter frequent response meaning the highest the mids and the lows are a little more even, doesn't sound like the Lowe's or boosted or the mids are scooped out or anything like that to where the PT 200x I think the highs are boosted a little bit more. No I have reviews on both microphones so you can hear all these on the my voice but personally I think I would go with the AM8, I my voice it just sounds verry smooth and I really enjoyed the sound that it gave me on my voice This has a very nice well-rounded sound. I can't say that one actually sounds better than the other they both just have a different sound This is why I say watch as many reviews on each one is possible and try to figure out which one sounds the best to you on the most people's voices because it's very hard to recommend somebody a microphone when they're both even like good they just sound a little different but in my ear I think the AM8 sounds a little more pleasing, That's the one I think I would go with personally The only downside I can see is that for some people will they might have a problem with it being made out of mainly all plastic and it doesn't give you any software but if you put an AMA up on a boom stand give them about 4 inches in front of your mouth set the game correctly, don't drop it on the floor or abuse it, itches sound great for a long time

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 17 днів тому

      between this and the toner, there are two very different microphones they give you very different sounds, This is what I consider a cheapie microphone that gives you a somewhat natural sound, I think whatever we recorded with it sounds pretty similar to the original sound source. The tonor has that darker broadcast/podcast type of tone, it cost a little more and does not come with the boom arm. Jen are you going to pay like 15 to 20 bucks for one of those basic boom arms so if you're buying this with the kit it's like paying 20 bucks for the arm and 15 bucks for the microphone or something along the lines of that. This one distorts a little bit When you get louder and the toner probably won't, The toner sounds a bit hollow and weird if you get too close to it, sounds nice if you back it away a little bit, they're both budget microphones, I'm sure there will be more reviews of this one coming out soon so my advice is listen to as many reviews of both as you can and figure out which one seems to sound the best to you on the most people's voices, I mean for under a hundred bucks there's a lot of good choices. For under 50 bucks you're not going to find a whole lot so if you're just looking to spend as little as possible and sound nice I think this little microphone is a good option. My advice is figure out what's the most you want to spend and then start watching as many reviews as possible for microphones under that price range and see one you think is going to fit your needs, but honestly if I couldn't spend very much money and I got this kit I could easily make this work I mean 35 bucks for a little microphone and a boom arm is crazy good especially since it sounds pretty decent.

      Yes, sometimes, I ended up doing some a/b testing between the two on a couple of different days and honestly a person's voice can sound different from day to day, or even at different times of the day I mean I'm sure you've heard the term morning voice or your voice sounds a little different in the morning, most of the time I feel like the SM7B is a little bit too dark sounding for my voice,, I don't have as much high-end or high mid frequencies in my voice as some people and the SM7B seems to pick up more of the low in frequencies so when you put those two things together sometimes it can give you a dull sounding recording, now this microphone boosts the high-end and the mid-range up a bit yet still gives you that warm sound people like in the SM7B, but every once in a while I get a recording where I'm like man that sounded great on the SM7B and my most days I think it sounds kind of bland so if I get the SM7B positioned just right and I record first thing in the morning I can get some pretty nice quality recordings on the SM7B but throughout the day I think my voice starts to sound a little hoarse and dull so I guess it really depends on what time of day I do the recording but generally I like something that boost the high-end and high mids up a little more on my voice, I really don't feel like the SM7B is a great fit for my voice. Occasionally I get a recording where I'm like oh man that sounded amazing but most time I'm like eh it sounds too dark or too basie for my voice, but I just don't think the SM7B is correct for me now if you've got a lot of high-end or high mid-range frequencies in your voice the SM7B often sounds amazing so really it just depends on the person

      You might want to look up some videos on how to use high pass and low pass filters, if you're finding some of the high frequencies to sound extra harsh, you might want to do a mild low pass filter which lets the low frequencies pass through but it cuts off a little bit of the high end so it's a little bit confusing on low pass versus high pass just like when you do a high pass it cuts off some of the base frequencies but let's all the high frequencies pass through but you also want to make sure you're listening on something that's capable of reproducing the recording because if you're trying to mix or EQ on the wrongs to the headphones it's often not going to sound right when you listen to it on the next thing, for example most audio engineers will listen to their mix on there computer as they're editing and then when they're done they'll take it out to the car the home stereo the phone and listen to it on like five or six different things to make sure it's still sounds right on all of them but it's much easier if you're mixing with monitors but a little bit of EQ work can fix some high end frequencies and that loughton does have a little bit of harshness in the high ends but it's really easy to fix that with a low pass filter now this is something that's also really important to think about Listening through laptop speakers won't even come close to giving you the full reproduction of what it recording sounds like, if you really want to hear the recording and all it's glory you need to get a set of studio monitor or monitor headphones as those are designed to try and play back the recording and let you hear what the recording actually sound like I mean even listening on my home my stereo is different than what you get over monitors, for example like a home stereo or a normal set of headphones is just designed to make music sound good to wear a set of monitors is designed to let you hear exactly what the recording sounds like But phone speakers, laptop speakers, TV speakers or even a basics to the cheap headphones won't really give you the full story Hopefully that all came out correctly I just talk into the phone and it types it out and this had to headphones doesn't it was good at picking up what I say correctly is the other ones I normally wear so hopefully there's not a bunch of typos lol, I can only see like two or three lines of the chat on this app so trying to go through it all and find typoses and nightmare cuz they don't let you see enough of it I did email Roswell recently and part of the email said hey ignore this part if you're not able to do it but I have a UA-cam channel and I would like to review one of your microphones if you can send one out and they replied about the main thing but didn't reply to that so I guess they're not going to send one but unfortunately it's pretty hard to be able to dump five 600 bucks on a microphone to make a video that's going to get like 30 cents lol or a couple dollars, but I have one of those on my shopping list and someday, maybe someday I'll pick one up, just had to rebuild a computer so that was a large chunk of money I didn't plan on spending right there

      Okay I thought you meant you were mainly just listening on your laptop, I'm actually surprised you're hearing some harshness on that Lauten you have, they seem like very smooth microphones but not every microphone is right for every person's voice, I think you might want to look for a microphone with more of a flat EQ curve if you're finding the high end to be too harsh. A lot of microphones will usually have between a three and six decibel boost on the high end, generally you can cut off a lot of that with a low pass if you're interested in getting a slightly darker sound,. Lauten makes crazy good stuff I think most of their microphones should probably cost more than they're charging for them. I know you mentioned the Roswell Mike's I'm not sure if you were thinking about getting them but the k67x with the transformer inside, sounds pretty cool and I think it gives you a little bit of a darker sound. ua-cam.com/video/v_woeI4sNWY/v-deo.htmlsi=KRZ-rarLngeiKcxb there's a good review video on that one, One of these days I would love to pick that up along with one or the other microphones but I think that might be a nice one to try out if you're finding the high-end to be a little harsh on the lautens

    Crazy good review! I just picked this mic up through Amazon Vine and I wanted to see what I'm getting myself into. The quality seems really nice for the price and it will definitely be enough for me chatting with my friends over discord. I noticed at one point that you talked about using an equalizer, but I must have missed which one. I'm currently using APO, if you got any other recommendations, I'd love to hear them

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 21 день тому

      I was always hoping to get invited to the Amazon Vine thing, I used to leave a lot of reviews but eventually I got lazy and stopped leaving the reviews on Amazon lol, sounds like you just have to leave a lot of reviews and hope they pick you, not sure, but as far as this little microphone it's not bad I mean if I put on some studio monitor headphones from mixing professional audio I definitely hear some flaws and some issues but the overall sound signature is pretty neutral, it doesn't sound tinny or boxy or anything like that I mean it just has a natural ish sound, you really can't beat it for $35. Now if you're using an equalizer I mean there's a lot of different VST plugins that you can use on your audio editing software or if you have a VST host or something like that, I don't remember mentioning that on this particular video I think I was just talking about the way of the company set the EQ curve at the factory, like if you build your own microphone as your soldering the little transistors and resistors in there's certain pieces you can change to give it more high-end or more low end or more mids so they kind of EQ it from the factory and then if you feel that you need to remove a couple of bad frequencies or need the boost to high end or at a little bit of presence, fabfilter pro Q3, is amazing but it's pretty expensive, The free TDR Nova, or the free reaper EQ, The waves f6 is a affordable EQ that a lot of people love, it's a great EQ but I don't prefer the user interface but it's a very good one for the money. if you go over to reaper's website they not only have audio editing software software That's really good and really portable but kind of complicating, they also have a free package of plugins that work on other digital to audio workstations they also work on OBS studio and stuff like that for recording your UA-cam videos or live streaming, I've never actually tried APO but that looks pretty interesting cuz I'm correct that's designed to work with windows itself, but in the professional audio world you normally you don't want to have to do too much EQ, when you record something you want it to be like 90 or 95% finished, you should only need a little tiny bit of EQ to maybe remove a couple of bad frequencies that the microphone or the room was giving off, some compression to control the water parts and quieter parts so they're closer together. And then if you're going to add some reverb or delay which you don't really want to do to a speaking voice you throw that in there and then finally throw a limiter on it to push it up to the volume you want and to make sure it never goes over that specific volume so if you're trying to hit like the loudness standards for Netflix or Spotify or even UA-cam you can use your limiter to get it to the exact volume those platforms are looking for but audio editing is something that takes a very long time to learn, some of the things that seem the most complicated are actually the easiest but the hardest thing is getting good at learning to EQ, especially if you don't have the right to the headphones because you can listen to the same track on your car stereo three sets of headphones your home stereo and it's going to sound different on everything so if you find a set of headphones or studio monitors that follow the Harmon curve or at least are really close to it generally you can get a mix that sounds good on everything Make your EQ work a little bit easier, for spoken word I try to eat you as little as possible sometimes less is more but like I said you're recording should be about 90 or 95% ready to publish when it comes to recording a speaking voice at least, now if you're recording drums or guitars or anything else I mean you can do some pretty interesting stuff with the effects. All right sorry I'm rambling on lol I like talking about audio stuff.

    Can Scarlett Solo power the Shure Sm7b ?

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 22 дні тому

      Yes, The fourth generation should have just a ittle more gain than the third gen not a lot more I think it's only a couple of decibels more, but I used a third generation with a SM7B for a long time, The third generation Scarlet Solo has just enough gain to make that happen, as long as your using proper microphone placement, of course when completely cranking a preamp you do get a very light amount of white noise type sound in the background but it's so small you really have to have the volume cranked to even be able to notice it's there when listening back to the recording, the 4th generation Scarlet looks like it has a little bit more gain than the third generation but I used a third generation and a SM7B for a long time and had absolutely no complaints. I will say this you might want to look at a 2i2 if you don't already own an interface because a lot of people will buy a interface that only holds one microphone and eventually realize hey I would really love to have two mics, but the third generation 2i2 and the solo have about the same amount of gain but when it comes to the fourth generation the 2i2 has more gain than the solo, the fourth generation 2i2 is really nice and that's my main audio interface to the music right now, if you're talking about a first or a second generation Scarlet solo I think you might need to get a fathead or a cloud lifter to boost the gain up a little bit but with proper microphone placements I had no problem running a SM7B on a third generation Scarlet solo and I was very happy with the overall results. The little bit of preamp noise I got from cranking it to almost Max was barely noticeable at normal listening volumes like I said you really have to crank up the volume on playback even though this that it's there but some people are extra picky and walk like that, for me it was no big deal whatsoever.

I do remember a few times in the past the company did a few things that a lot of people didn't like but I've never really had any issues with them myself. I was a little upset when they decided they were going to be a subscription service only but they quickly decided to go ahead and make the subscription and keep selling the plugins individually too so I'm glad they didn't go to subscription only

    Do you recommend the Silk Live for live streaming EQ?

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 24 дні тому

      I think that's a great plugin and you can use it live I mean it's kind of similar to the soothe plug-in from another company that cost a crap load of money, now if you crank the dials up too high it's going to wreck your sound, When I use silk vocals I normally get good results by putting the low end on about maybe 5 to 10 and then I put the mids in the highs on summer between 20 and 30 and that does remove a lot of the bad frequencies without affecting the overall sound quality,, The built-in compressor on that is decent I like the aravox compressor but I might just be nitpicking there so it does have a nice built-in compressor but the only thing bad about the silk vocal is the high-pass filter cuts off so much of the low end it's going to change the way your voice sounds drastically so I always make sure I turn off the high pass filter on that plugin so if you use that plug in sparing link it can do a great job of getting rid of a lot of the bad resonating frequencies, now if you're recording in a super horrible room that's just full of nasty revenant resonance it might struggle but if you're recording in a decent room I think that's a really good overall plugin as long as you use it sparingly I mean for a speaking voice less is Morris sometimes you don't want to overdo anything on a speaking voice but it really does make your voice sound nice used properly. Just don't overdo it and you'll probably get some pretty good results, I always enjoy the results I get from it If you're trying to use it with OBS studio make sure you download the free Waves studio rack plugin that allows you to use their plugins on OBS, without it they don't generally work but studio racks really cool and I use it on my live streams on my gaming channels

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 24 дні тому

      I did a live stream on my gaming channel and since you asked I decided to use silk vocal live, and the only other plug-in I ran was the WLM Plus with true peak limiter, if you start this video at around 14 minutes in I think I had it adjust it to where I wanted around 14 minutes in ua-cam.com/users/livexI-WCK4lzqI?si=ByqqLpN1TsWF63Se but there is a link todays live stream where I was using it, when I first started the stream up I think I played with a controls a little bit, made a couple two weeks every couple of minutes and then ended up with the Lowe's on 5, mids on about 35 and the highs on about 50%, using a SSL 2 plus interface with a road pod mic which is known to be a little harsh on the high frequencies so that's a good mic to test this plug-in with, I think it made it sound pretty nice

      I've never tried to use two of this particular microphone, normally you can plug in more than one of the same USB microphone but what it sounds like is your computer is not recognizing that they're two different devices, I don't know if you're on PC or Mac but I don't want Windows you can rename a device once you plug it in, I can't remember offhand how you find those settings but I remember doing this once or twice in the past, I think I found these settings through the device manager if I remember correctly but there was a time when I had two audio interfaces of the same brand and the computer wasn't recognizing them separately so I changed the name of one on Windows and then it recognized them as two separate devices, you can probably do a Google search or a UA-cam search on how to rename a device and if that doesn't work I'm not 100% sure what else you could try, you may also be able to Google search this subject and find a couple of other possible workarounds, if you're on a Mac or an Apple computer I actually don't know anything about those but I've had good luck in the past renaming a device on Windows when I had two similar things and it didn't recognize them as separate devices

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 26 днів тому

      Yes There's one problem with that, When you get really close to certain microphones they sound overly bassy and sometimes very unnatural, The Lauten is actually designed for speaking really close, I think the NT1 gets too much proximity effect when you're that close to it. Generally a condenser microphone about 6 in away is k Often the sweet spot to get a natural sound out of it, dynamic microphones are designed to be like 2 to 3 in in front of your face which is kind of what they have tried to design this Lauten microphone. it gets a bit of proximity effect but at like three inches away and you don't have much when you're right up on top of it. If you can find a condenser that sounds great when you eat it then you could get similar results unless it's one of those overly sensitive microphones. . Now if I do the same thing on my Neumann it's so sensitive even if I'm eating it it still picks up decent amount of reverb, what's really interesting is the mic that picks up the most reverb that I own is probably the Lewitt LCT 440 pure, but how close you can get to a microphone and keep it sounding nice depends on the microphones proximity effect

    • @dannylightning-audio-reviews
      @dannylightning-audio-reviews 28 днів тому

      A dynamic microphone is not designed to be used from a distance, a dynamic microphone should be between 3 and 6 in away from your mouth and it should definitely be up on a boom arm which you can get for about 20 bucks. There are some huge advantages to having a dynamic microphone and having it a couple inches in front of your mouth on a boom arm If you truly need to have the microphone further away you would probably want to look at a large diaphragm condenser or a small diaphragm condenser but the thing is for best results you still want to have that about 4:00 to 6 in for best results you still want to have that between 4 and 8 in away from your mouth, When you get the microphone say an arm length are two arms lengths away and you're running a condenser Mic You're still going to have to crank the gain up really high and it's going to pick up all the room reverb it's going to pick up every mouse click every keyboard click every noise in the background which can lead to really terrible audio quality, This is why I'm recording studios or any type of professional audio room they will sound treat the walls the ceilings the floors to absorb all the reverb and some of them will even soundproof the room so no sound can get in so the condenser microphones not picking up all the outside noises, a good condenser microphone will pick up everything. I feel like your best bet is get yourself a cheap boom arm and clamp it to your desk or maybe even pick up a floor standing microphone stand with adjustable length, I'm not sure what your seating situation looks like but one of the other would be a great choice, I can't really think of a good USB condenser microphone that you're going to finding the $50 price range. You could pick up a audio interface in between 50 and 100 bucks and a SE electronics SE7 small diaphragm condenser microphone for about 99 bucks and a XLR cable, I think audio Technica makes a really nice AT-2020 USB condenser microphone for around $99 but you might want to check out this video right here which will kind of demonstrate what I'm talking about about the audio quality I mean this will just show you how much less reverb a dynamic will pick up compared to a condenser, your room probably won't be as bad as this but it could be if your room is really empty and not carpet it or anything ua-cam.com/video/19Nw5KvpSkE/v-deo.htmlsi=Dr6iTJjZMo8_ienP
