Fuel Keg: What Happens If You Accidentally Open The Valve?

What happens if you accidentally open the valve on the Fuel Keg tank? I've seen this question a lot, so I decided to make a dedicated video about it. But this should not be a concern at all, as I demonstrate in this video. This valve will only work when i...

I've seen in reviews the Keg has gasket issues
The big buddy caught on fire in my house the first time i used it. I managed to toss it out the glass sliding door. Fire dept. came to put it out. you better be careful. If someone dies and they bought it because of your vid you will be in some legal trouble. Just letting you know.
How did that happen? Did you do something not recommended?
@@Captcass12 I bought it that day with a 1 pound canister. When I turned it on fire shoe out from all the openings around the handle. Murdocks gave me my money back no questions asked. If yours ever starts burning do what the firemen did. reach the canister with protective gloves and unscrew the canister if you can. That was the only way to put it out or it would have kept burning. The fireman came back that day and gave me information on how many house fires were started with the big buddy and others like it. I never bought another big buddy for sure.
Sorry to hear that happened. It would be interesting to know exactly what caused the fire. As mentioned in the video, I recommend reading and following the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines.
I use a magnet from a old hard drive to hold it to the fill valve works well ..add note the Fuel Keg has been know to leak.
How long does it burn/heat?
The product description says it will run up to 11 hours on low and 2.8 hours on high. I haven't tested that out, but it sounds right.
Do current models have the fan or is that an older model?
Looks like the "red" model I linked in the description has the fan. It's weird, some do some don't. Just be sure to check the product description closely.
Awesome video. I bought one per your recommendation and it has kept us warm throughout several power outages. Great heater.
That's great to hear! I'm glad it's been helpful for you.
Belief is obedience! Repent and turn from wicked ways.
Has this issue (by another user) been resolved? 6 days ago Fuelkegs have a flaw during the welding part. Sometimes the welders leave the beads inside the tank without cleaning them out. And they get stuck in the valve if you turn the tank upside down. I ordered 4 FuelKegs and only one of them didnt have the beads. You can shake them around to hear it. So i ordered 15 more of them to Home Depot so i can pick out 3 good ones. 10 of them were full of beads. One had only a small amount of beads, and 4 were perfect. I kept those 4. So now i have 5 perfect FuelKegs out of 19 ordered.
1500 people died in car wreck on the way to the hardware store last year to buy the none refillable bottle for 20 bucks.
If you have hot enough water, to make coffee, you have power and can make coffee anyway.
There are alot of people out there that have no common sense so my advise is if you have no common sence dont do it but id say this guy makes money by telling people not to fill them
The guy in the article was probably smoking while refilling
Appreciate you doing this.
Please use metric measurements
I use mine to charge my Bluetti and Jackery which I use for internet router and TV. I run a window AC or heater directly off the generator. The thing is a champ.
That's awesome!
What is shocker that a company that sells those is going to tell you not to refill it.
Is one of these refill valves compatible with both bottles or are the refill valves only compatible with their own brand?
The refill valves are only compatible with their own brand.
In a garage? every safety video says fill them out doors. not out doors in your garage probably smoking at the same time? and refilling green tanks that are not supposed to be refilled hahaha. ya I know lots of people do so and get away with it,, ya lots of people get away with walking on thin ice until they dont. Use the refillable ones and get some common sense
Great video! Subscribed.
Thank you!
Flame King appears to have a greater variety of refillable tanks.
Take a magic marker and indicate with arrows marks on the bottom of the 20lb which way you turn the knob on and off. Open and close fully. Alway used a filter on everything. And clean the rust off all threads. AND NEVER DO THIS PROCESS IN IN A ENCLOSED SPACE. Be safe.
Been refilling them for over years, just buy new ones every year or so.
It's all jive... Stay alive, refill OUTSIDE !
You're a C
The fuel keg's tool-less vent seems more convenient, but i would be really concerned about inadvertent actuation and/or tampering. Does the purge vent only work when attached to the refill adapter or will it vent regardless? To that end the flame king set screw is definitely more secure and i just stuck it to the refill adapter with a magnet so i wouldn't lose it. Speaking of the alignment peg and overfill valve, flame king doesn't say the peg needs to be aligned and it isn't even long enough to interact with anything in the bottle's fitting. You demerited flame king for a step you just made up, which definitely isn't a fair criticism.
None of what you said makes sense. Propane can only generate so much pressure before it becomes liquid. The bottles are rated for pressures well above that. Why would you get rust on the inside of the bottle? There shouldn’t be any oxygen in the tank that is necessary to cause rust. If oxygen is mixing with the propane inside of the tank, you have far worse things to worry about.
Today I'm filling a 100 lb with a 5 - 20lb tanks.
Stupidity kill the cat Never do anything like that indoors. always have proper ventilation. I fill these all day long properly outdoors.
Do you need a filter after refilling the keg? I biught several of the kegs and refilled them. I just dint want them to gum up my buddy heater
This thread needs some basic skills on identifying aluminum vs steel.
Why fool around for a few dollars. Just get the bottles designed to be refilled. They are not expensive at all.
trying to sell more reusable tanks
Nice comparison video. You can tell you're definitely a a fuel keg fan. You cut down the Flame King at every turn. Let's start with the stand comparisons. The Flame King stand is bulkier and harder to transport fully assembled than the Fuel Keg one. This is true, but are you going to take the stand and a 20lb tank with you camping? Probably not. The Flame King stand allows you to refill on any flat surface. The Fuel Keg one needs to be close to an edge of a table/stair/tailgate to fit the bottle under it. If that's the case, why use the Fuel Keg stand at all? If you attach the adapter to the 20lb tank before you flip it over, it's very stable. As far as the Allen key needed to operate the bleed valve, I'd prefer that to a spring loaded assembly made of pot metal any day of the week. Pot metal is very brittle, corrodes quickly and is subject to breaking easily if mishandled. How hard is it to either tape or use rubber bands to keep the tool on the adapter? The little tab again is no big deal either. All you need to do is mark the tank with a Sharpie to where it is. For my money, I'll stick with the Flame King refillable tanks. I appreciate the time it took to provide this content, but it's definitely one sided.
They can be refilled many times safely. Literally hundreds of thousands of people are doing this on the regular and one single incident means they can't be done safely... That's like saying you shouldn't go hiking because you could get attacked by a bear.
The one thing safety wise that sets these two apart is the bleed valve. On every other bleed valve I’ve seen is if you open it or it became loose for any reason, gas escapes into wherever the tank resides. The only way that happens with the Mr. Heater is if you have it attached to the refill adapter. That metal post depresses the valve to allow air to escape allowing a fill. As soon as you remove the adapter, the valve is closed to prevent gas from escaping. So. even if the valve switch was opened by any means, while not connected to the filler, it would not leak from the bleeder port on the side of the valve. Convenient and much safer design. This is a very valid reason to pick this system in and of itself in my opinion.
Good to know, I was willing to keep track of the hex key for a Flame King because I thought there was an increased risk of leakage due to the simplicity/ease of use with the Mr. Heater. Thanks for clearing that up!
@@monzoola5022The engineers must have known a child or bouncing around could cause that ring to turn. I believe there must be a spring that gets depressed when the post on the refill adapter is screwed down. When you unscrew it, the spring pushes the valve closed. That’s my guess. That is quite a good design to make that tank more safe. There is a tube inside of the Flameking 1 pound cylinders that allow liquid to escape at ~80 percent full leaving head space for expansion in heat. I feel quite sure the other 1 pound cylinders employ this tube also. On disposable cylinders, you have to guess and weigh. Plus, the metal is thinner and not designed for repeated fills. Plus those Schrader type valves are prone to leaking.
One more thing. That valve is there for a reason. Even though gas does not escape with the bleeder in the open position unconnected from the adapter, it is probably a secondary safety system. The cut off valve that you turn should always be in the closed position after filling for maximum safety.
A very good strategy to lock their adapter to their tanks.
Good info
What a great video, it looks like Mr Heater looked at Flame King's setup and outdid them every step of the way, definitely going with them
0 logical explanation on design limitations. 💩
I buy gas with no ethanol. I add stabilizer and works great.
Interesting that even with a pressure relief valve built right into the top it ruptured anyway.
Flame King for the win
Mine is leaking. Bought two days ago. 😂
Thanks for the video. Question is it common to hear a little rattle in a new bottle? Is it ok to use?
The ring on the Keg gets in the way of some of my devices, so I landed on Flame King.
Complains about the plastic cap, but then endorses the cheap plastic stand 😖
Both these systems tanks need a rubber seal in the cap. Plastic cap with no rubber seal will leak.
