Voices of the Downtown Eastside
Canada
Приєднався 27 лис 2022
Hello and welcome to the channel where people who live on or frequent Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, get the chance to tell us something about themselves and how it is that they arrived at where they now are. Many stories, but not all, will include such topics as drug use, addictions, recovery, sobriety, homelessness/housing challenges, mental health issues, and creativity. The hope is that the experience of being seen and heard, will be of benefit to those who share their stories, and that the listener will gain understanding and compassion for the challenging realities others may be facing.
If you appreciate or enjoy the content of the videos on this channel, please consider subscribing. Thank you very much for watching.
As well, I have created a GoFundMe page, if anyone is interested in making a donation to help support any of the people I interview (donations will go towards whatever their main need is or where the sender desires). Thank you!

And then along comes Mary Mary, Mary Then along comes Mary Mary, Mary And does she wanna set them free And let them see reality from where she got her name? And will they struggle much when told that such A tender touch of hers will make them not the same? When we met I was sure out to lunch Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch Sweet as the punch
Beautiful work.
What is going on with her or him 😂😂😂
And what is this that the affluent province of British Columbia takes the position that this woman is not entitled to the best care possible instead she is given less than it takes to survive ?? and mental health care that is non-existent Shame! Shame! on this government. She is living in a third world country! Politicians living in the lap of luxury being paid for by tax$$ do nothing that they were voted in to do? Free drugs for all, puts a twelve foot invisible fence around the East end keeping people in a prison, free drugs just stay within the perimeter ! The mentally ill can do nothing to save themselves or be aware of what is happening! Self medicated to ease the pain.Time for a revolution, it is now guaranteed that the governments we are voting in are a total waste of our tax $$$, our health care system is nonexistent we have no social net, the private sectors organizations are the only safety net these people have? Time for a revolution from the Federal government down through the provincial it can only get better !
TOTAL NUTTER..- I BET SHE HAS BEEN ABDUCTED BY ALIENS TOO --HAHAHAA!
She reminds me of mike tyson a bit
You got that right 😂😂😂
She has lost her mind.
At least you can remember the mighty pies winning the flag in 1990.
Swiped left
Anything past 89 isn't worth remembering anyway...
What a struggle…she does look happy in a way….
No way this type of wicked open air drug environment should be taking place on East Hastings... or anywhere in Canada.
it's not as "wicked" as it seems, allowing them to have access to help if they need it without exclusion while also not denying them access to clean syringes prevents disease and death, as ridiculous as that may seem.
@@Nosferdamus Take a walk down East Hastings... and get back to me.
@@IceManLikeGervin I'm pretty sure everyone in Canada is aware of East Hastings since the Pinkton murders, are you some kind of idiot? Decriminalization isn't the demon you think it is, leaving police constantly in these people's lives when most of them are just homeless addicts is injust. these people need HELP not jail time.
@@Nosferdamus Name calling - how mature. It is what it is. All the best.
God keep mary safe and may her dreams come true
ya none of that is true. she is just really deranged.
I mean that was 40 years ago who can remember anything before let’s say sega genesis or the internet
when she was growing up there wasn't computers. times were slower. there weren't "video games," there were "sports" or "board games."
Street drugs destroy your mind. She didn't say if the drugs wiped her memory. Early childhood brutality can also destroy the ability to retain memory/attachments.
#1 Ended up in the DTES #2 Fell through the cracks #3 Prostitution #4 Drugs now #5 Has a home nearby #6 Heard it before is like a rule a norm a theme of some sort of thing it's all too sad and too real as well
Nice to know BC is so third world, where people who should be in some type of long term care environment are left to the streets. The BC establishment's pride in a job well done is quite lacking! I would be embarrassed to admit if I worked in government if I did.
I agree. It’s terrible how they leave these people on the streets. And it’s just getting worse
They used to have a massive mental health psych ward that shut down and a lot of those people had nowhere to go. A lot drug addicts in Canada migrate to Canada because it has the most temperate climate in Canada. Lots of drugs and tons of resource centers for free food, drug supplies and whatever else.
@@spritegirl5386 saved the province I would believe billions?
Wow!
You can not tell to look at many people the extent of a head injury....so we have no way of knowing if or when he had these injuries. His speech seems a struggle, so it could be highly possible he has all the medical issues he claims to have. Our most vulnerable deserve protection and access to resources. This man deserves better
Professional victim This story is all bull
So sad how life can throw you curveballs like that. By the way, this is quite a bit too zoomed in, would be a better watch if it wasnt so close up.
Oh but we give immigrants 85k and full rights before our own citizens… how is that not racist.
I see you dear one, and I see you healed and vital and sharing in joy again. I believe this for you. Blessing sir
They were trying to drug him to death. The death care system of Canada
Every politician is guilty
Welcome to Canada, where no one e does anything anymore. Blessings to all, and may everyone receive the personal care and support they deserve, instead of having our wealth stolen to fund wars while our own suffer
The Irony of 'Harm Reduction'. Ive been clean since 1998. I did my 1st smash in 1978. Back in the day, if you wanted a clean rig(that means syringe), you had to exchange a used/old one to get a new one. If you didnt have an old one, you couldnt get a new one. The Needle Exchange was directly across from Main St. Courthouse. Now you can pick up a party-pack anywhere. They hand them out like water. Harm Reduction policies are what has put a dirty needle in every Park & Playground, not to mention all over the streets, in the Lower Mainland. They call this "Harm Reduction". Isnt that Ironic!?!
Devon is so right about what he needs first. I went to a housing rights protest at 33rd and Main yesterday because Canada is one of the few countries that does not have a national housing policy to protect Devon's right to secure housing. Thank you for this gentle interview.
It's really unfortunate....back in the 90's I couldn't get over how relaxed and friendly the people in the Vancouver area were compared to ontario....I think this is Canada wide problem now....the doctors and government started this opioid problem....
Devon, I pray you find your way back to your dad. May Creator watch over you and guide you down the right path. 🙏🏼❤️
Is that the tim hortons that was in the news for removing all the seating?
No, but it's a few blocks away from it, at Pender and Abbott 😊
You’d think we would have something like victim services for people injured through violent crimes. This Government makes me sick. No addiction services except, here’s MORE of the crap you’re addicted to. Recovery plan needed
He had housing and a plan and left it all himself
If you come illegally and are non white you get at least $6500 a month
Devon, I hope to see you around one day. Keep your head up partner.
If you do make sure you don't have children with you
Why did you erase the name of her family???
I know her, her name is Melissa and she dated a famous downtown eastside artist for quite some time named Ken Foster. I worked on his documentaty “where is Ken” I’m surprised she is still around. I’m glad she’s still alive.
I hope Devon finds his way. He could get into a recovery house which is governemtneny funded. They are super super easy to get into right away.
She is so sweet and wise! I wish I could have a chat with her.

This is Really Sad...
The government stole his boat and auctioned it off.
I moved to Vancouver in 1991 from Ontario in my early twenties At that time it was a magical spot .. .so pretty and the people were so layed back and kind....the bar scene had awesome music and downtown was safe and fun... I went back to ontario in 1998 because the cost of living was getting to high... Went back for a visit in 2012 I couldn't believe how much it changed Not the same Vancouver I left in 1998 Vancouver died a long time ago and never coming back Run . ..run...run from today's Vancouver
ya, its Gotten really Bad over the past 10 years...
Like Toronto well the GTA as a whole. Especially Brampton. Immigration policies and international students destroyed it
Vancouver - the lower mainland has deteriorated. Poverty and crime escalates. BC is a woke province. It's always been a drug - crime haven.
@@stainz5714 should see it now .. I lived in van in the early 90s also, today it's brutal, total shitshow with crime and addiction , homelessness etc
I've watched Vancouver turn into a shithole, and am ready to leave. Problem is, everywhere is becoming the same way
wow i saw this happen to peter de groot in the kootenays .......locals /150cops came in to murder him hope devon gets well very sad
Sad to see. I was injured from a coworker who wasn't operating his vehicle correctly and I ended up with my head caved in as well.
I'm sorry to hear about this. I hope you've been able to recover well. 💚
It’s sad what’s happened to Vancouver the drugs are horrible there now it wasn’t like that in the 90s
Ya it was ,just less blocks covered , we had an opiate crisis in the 90s in Vancouver as well with pure heroin being put in the street .
And the government thinks it’s a great idea to hand out hardcore drugs for free ffs!
Vancouver - the lower mainland has deteriorated. Poverty and crime escalates. BC is a woke province. A booming population. It has always been a drug haven. Port City, decriminalized drugs and close to the US border. A very overwhelmed health care and legal system .
@@leemackay888 Indeed. The China White crisis is a small scale compared to the population now.

He's my abuser and a pedophile please stop
This is my abuser. He is a pedophile and not a good man it's sad to see we don't do research before we platform people. His first name is cody his middle name is Devon
Not enough support for people like Devon, come on Trudeau smarten up and stop worrying about you're Taylor Swift concert and look at the state you're country is in...........Sigh
I agree
Its true but its bit just trudeau. Canada as a whole is corrupt and failing and has been for a long tine
👏👏👏
Drugs are NOT a crutch & should be used only under very necessary medical conditions & not like candy like it is done now. This is the root-cause of almost every ill in society. Mental illness - psychosis too - probably.
if i was one of these guys i'd definitely construct false stories about my past, because false stories are all i would have 🙂
These are very false he's a pedophile and a pathology liar. I know because I'm one of his victims
