A day of auditions, classes, and rehearsal as an equity actor in NYC!
Thanks for joining me on this day in the life! I went to an audition (and some exciting things happened there), had a voice lesson, and then went to my new favorite class, Stage The Number. It was a packed day of being an equity actor here in NYC and I loved every minute of it.

Thank you for joining me this week!! It was filled with a few auditions, some class, lots of personal workouts and routines, therapy, and more. Oh, also, a little PSA about how I was struggling through sickness all week during this video I was already sick for over a week and a half, went to the doctor, and didn't have any fever or anything, so I did my best to wash my hands and not get my germ...

After so many years vlogging I'm bringing you all back to where it started! I started this Vlog channel when I booked the A Chorus Line Broadway tour, and that's how I found this little passion of mine on UA-cam. I realized, however, that I never shared the story of how I got the role! It's actually an insane story that involves some major drama with my old agents, an almost missed final callba...

When you said tea time with Mel before that my brain auto filled with “Mel’s monologues”
@@racheldeschaine hahahaha 😂😂😂
Great vlog. How about a Video about your rep Book ? Great examples for uptempo, Ballad, different Styles…. Maybe Great audition cuts..
19:35 I would buy a ticket to see this show! In studio classes like this, are there large mirrors in front where dancers can see the large group during run throughs? I was actually surprised there weren't mirrors on the side walls.
Hope you get a call back - so much effort!
I’m loving Tea Time❤
Do you film on your phone or a camera camera?
Really enjoying "tea time with Mel"..great insights into the theatre world for non-theatre industry people who just are purely theatre fans.
@@rhondaharris3291 yay so so glad 🤍
The need to catch your hair at the perfect moment to blow dry it is so real. (Only to get it so sweaty at the audition later. The struggle.)

Mel, this was a great insight and really entertaining. Sending positive vibes for call backs, all the way over here in the UK x
I'm so so glad :) Thank you immensely <3
i love watching your vlogs!! it makes me feel inspired to keep working
YAY that makes me so happy to hear!!
I loved watching this! It's so fun to get a glimpse into an industry I know nothing about. Sending so much love and good luck this audition season! xo
Shayna!!! Thank you <3
As someone with no idea about dancing, what even differentiates people at this level? Also, it must be so much pressure on the singing teachers to deliver good lessons when people's dreams depend on it.
Honestly, everyone that I'm auditioning with is wonderful. Like -- everyone is so good. So, at the end of the day, I truly believe it's more about what you have to offer as a performer as in how you give off energy, perform, etc. and if it fits the show and the role you're auditioning for. It can also come down to things like height, hair color, overall look, whether you've worked with someone on the creative team or not, etc. Everyone is SO talented, so it really comes down to things that you can't control!!!
Your outfit for the day has a brass and bronze color along with the gold boots. This is a perfect match for your future Tony award!
I love that energy!! yes!!!
Hey Melissa, I’ve been following your channel For a longer time now and I really love your mindset in terms of handling with auditions! I’m also a musicaltheater artist in the Netherlands and Germany And for the first few years after my graduation, it was so hard to get into an audition room, and also to get booked. But I always have an inner feeling that told me to keep on going, My time will come, and people will know me and wanna work with me. Since a few years things are running for me, I did different productions in different country’s and currently I’m in a long running show in the Netherlands. I’m of course really happy about that, but that only worked out because I had more or less the same mindset as what you described now in your teatime! I just want to add on that that when I go into that audition room nowadays I always tell myself: You know what you can offer them and you know that you would do great in that show “it’s their lost if they don’t take you!” Keep on going and I’m pretty sure it’s gonna work out for you one day!❤ Greetings, Lloyd from the Netherlands!
What an incredible outlook and perspective!
🥂 ❤

I totally feel you on everything you said in your tea time with Mel (love the segment name btw haha). This is my first audition season with representation and I have no clue what to expect but WOW these ECC/EPA calls are packed!
I’m planning to try out Interim tomorrow!!
WOW. That Elphaba reference really emphasizes how competitive the musical theater industry really is. Great vlog Mel.
Right?! Wild stuff. Thank you ❤
Hi Melissa. I am curious, have you thought about reaching out to directors for securing roles? For example maybe Alex Timbers is still looking for people for his show Just in Time and asking him for an audition and show your portfolio/ demo reel. It’s not guaranteed but it sometimes helps
@@Muzical-Man hi! So that’s not really recommended if you don’t have somewhat of a relationship with these people. Totally appropriate if it’s someone you’ve auditioned for a bunch or someone whose called you back, but if it’s a cold reach out, many directors and casting directors actually don’t like that at all. It’s also hard to find their contact info/isn’t easily findable, so it’s not really appropriate to reach out if they’re not advertising for people to. This is also one of the jobs of my agent, if I feel strongly about something, I can ask him to reach out which is considered more appropriate - but that can still get lost in the void
I would love to see videos of you reacting to the Legally Blonde The Musical: The Search for Elle Woods series! It’s so crazy to rewatch now, there are some great takes on it (plus the reunion they did during COVID spilled so much good tea).
Loving how frequently you have been uploading videos Mel, I just know that good things are coming your way soon ❤
Yay I’m so glad!!!!! Thank you 🤍🤍🤍

I’m really enjoying your vlogs and I’m glad that you didn’t quit during the pandemic. Girl, that was 5 years ago! 😮 I’m SAG-AFTRA but work in a performing arts school. I retire and will focus on VO while easing back into auditions. I’m a choral director. Protect your voice at all times! You bring a smile to my face. Stay the course and do your thing! You inspire people but I enjoy seeing what’s going on in NYC now. If I can add one more thing to your plate, here it is. Are you able to sock away money weekly or monthly into a Roth IRA or IRA? Please add that since you won’t miss it and compound interest is glorious later in life. Enjoy life as always! Thanks for sharing it with us! ❤
@@performingartseducator thank you so much!!! Your career sounds so cool 🤩 I wish I could be putting money into those accounts, however while I’m auditioning in NYC, I actually have to dip into my savings every month to be able to pay for my training 🫠 and barely have enough for regular bills haha. I actually have a video (not sure if you saw it) where I break down my finances. It’s so rough! BUT - if I can make my dreams come true of making money off of these videos, then I’ll be able to save a bit!!!
@@melcabeyvlogs Thank you! Yes! I retire in May 2025 at 54. I spent my career teaching music and drama in the schools. I was able to get a few film credits here and there. After joining the union, I focused on voice over. I was still dedicated to film auditions until the pandemic hit and decided to focus on my students who severely needed my attention. Since I retire this summer, I'm set to go back to VO full-time and ease into stage and film auditions. However, this little thing called saving for retirement is so important for performers that I'll mention it and then drop it. If your parents can help you, ask them to. I'm not kidding. I did see your financial video. I just want all of the performers to know this little secret called compound interest. It is a dream come true when you in your 50s and decide that you want something more for yourself beyond performance. However, I get it that it's very difficult. Think $25 per week that you never touch socked away for your future self. Feel better. You have a friend in Atlanta.
I'll share your information with my parents to show them what's going on in auditions in NYC for more subscribers. Many have no clue.
I love watching these vlogs!
That makes me so happy! Thank you!
Guuurrrlll, you know that you are "werkin'" that COAT 💥
This is the main reason I am going to persue my career in Ireland. Granted, the musical theater portion of the industry is not as robust, but Ireland has state sponsored productions and elevates and encourages new works, writers and directors. Their industry is also becoming less homogeneous, so I will stand out (in a good way, I hope 😂)
That honestly sounds so fulfilling and amazing! I love Ireland, one of my favorite places. 🤍🤍
I LOVE Entertainer's Secret! It's amazing!
It's brutal out here. I feel this so hard!

Hello Mel, Thanks very much for all your Videos. They are very enjoyable. Would you consider traveling to another city for show work? There's, several theatres in Phila. and there's the Bristol Riverside Theatre, where I live. There's also, Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope PA and a theatre in Doylestown, Pa. In Princeton NJ, there's the Mc Carter Theatre too. I heard there's a Theatre at Pocono Plateau, PA, where a Ballet teacher was going to perform at. About that Respiratory Infection, I had it from Oct 2024 - Jan. 2025 with Laryngitis. Couldn't talk for three weeks. What fun! Best wishes fort you always. DCD.
@@daviddroxler8534 hi David! Thank you!! I actually audition for Riverside and Bucks County right here in NYC! Believe it or not, those auditions still bring in about 1000 people from each gender to audition right here in the city 😅🫠 it’s wild! I am a member of actors equity, so I can only audition for equity theatres - and 99% of them hold auditions here, so traveling wouldn’t do me any good. Thank you for sharing, and thank you SO much for your support 🤍🤍
Hi Mel, thank you for breaking down what auditioning looks like for theatre. I am curious, outside of theatre have you thought about auditioning for commercials, television, movies, modeling, off broadway, and other musicals with smaller productions? I know nothing about this industry and what it entails other than what I have learned from you.
@@cherokee7411 hi! Yup - I audition for every type of theatre there is, however I’m a member of actor’s equity so it has to be theatres or productions that are under equity. As for TV/film/commercials - I would LOVE to get into that more, however I need film footage to get auditions, and don’t have very much yet. Definitely something I’ll be working on in the off season!
@@melcabeyvlogs, Thank you for replying, and explaining how actor equity works.
Mel, I have several comments for you after watching this blog. Please get back to me when you have a chance. I live in the Hell’s Kitchen and I did run into you one time several years ago. Stay well. Frankie PS) I am an old character actor, not a Casting Director…but a former Cruise Director‼️

Oooo I’ll check this out! Thank you!!!
I love your videos. They are very educational for me. I have been doing theater forever and I am 59. When I was in my 20s, I was hitting every open call and being told I was too young for the roles I was auditioning for. Now, I am the right age, but my voice is just not what it needs to be anymore. I have an acting job that is steady work, but not frequent. I am not in any unions and I don't know if I should even consider joining. What do you think?
I can’t wait to take an interim class with you
omg omg Feb can't come soon enough!!!!
How do you make the high protein oatmeal? It looks so good!
@@carolinemarshall1669 it’s so yummy!! I do oatmeal with Fairlife milk (has double the amount of protein as regular milk), chia seeds, and then I top it with half a cup of Greek yogurt. I think in total that gets me about 28-30 grams of protein :) I’m not a fan of mixing protein powder in, so this was the alternative I created hahaha
🥦 hey there! I am a mutual from TT, just making sure I have friendly faces on these other apps as well 🥰🥰🥰

That book you're reading in the waiting room! OMG! Sounds so good!
It is!!!! My sister got it for me for Christmas haha, right on brand!

You should!!
3:09 😂 Do certain shows ask for actors and dancers to audition with certain looks/types of apparel or is this something actors do to help demonstrate they have a certain look for a particular production? I’m surprised this would be required on an initial audition.
They don’t! But most people like to feel more “in character” for an audition, because it helps you live in the world of the play more authentically. For me, personally, how I dress and do my hair/makeup affects how I feel in my dancing! With the changing styles of different shows, I love to feel like I look the part 🤩
