One of my favorite meals to eat while backpacking and canoeing. Right at 700 calories per serving and approximately 6 oz, this makes for a calorie dense meal for the backcountry. Its super easy to make and much cheaper than store bought dehydrated meals.

Hemmed In Hollow is one of my most favorite places!
It's an incredible place!
Hey really like your videos! Looking at a few canoes and was wondering what other canoes you have experience with for comparison
Thank you! I personally do not have a ton of experience in other canoes. I did have a cheap pelican canoe as a teen, and it was fine with recreational day trips. But other than that, I can't really say.
Excellent series, it must feel amazing to share such an incredible trip with your son. Subscribed! I look forward to checking out your other videos. 🛶 ⛺️
I am truly blessed to have been able to do this trip with my son. He had so much fun and still often talks about the trip.
This is one of the best Buffalo River videos I’ve seen on YT. You really get a sense of what’s it like out there. We are hoping to do a spring trip out there in late April. What were the dates of your trip and how cold was the water? Did you swim at all? Thanks for posting, can’t wait to watch the other episodes.
Thank you so much for the kind words. We went the first week of May. The water was cold but not so cold you couldn't enjoy a swim. We did swim some once at camp. It was nice after a long day of padding.
I love the current
@@MissAprilNinja it's an incredible place.
Surprised you didn't stop at pulltie spring
I must have missed it!!! I just looked up pics. How did I miss that?!!!
@@REXpeditions There is an old cabin that some businessmen built in the early 1900's pretty incredible. Next time !!
I love Bill Mason's quote, "All my life people have been telling me you should never travel alone. But it’s interesting; I’ve never been told that by anybody who’s ever done it.” If you are going to tackle wilderness travel solo, you must be prudent in mitigating risk. There's no one to bail you out. Slowing down, paying attention, leaving your location and trip plans with someone, being extra cautious to avoid potentially dangerous scenarios are just a few. Some would argue that traveling solo could potentially be "safer" due to heightened situation awareness. Regardless, always calculate and mitigate risk.
Excellent video. We saw you Day 2 I believe. The weather was perfect (though as you noted, it was pretty chilly Sat morning), and we hit the trees just right as they changed during the trip. And yes, the water was very low, the lowest I've seen ever, and I've been canoeing this river since '69. Also hard to believe that just two weeks later, the river at Akers Ferry rose from a foot to a record 31 feet, 5 feet higher than the previous record in 2017!
Thank you for the kind words! I remember you guys! Enjoyed the conversation! I was thinking the same thing about the river flooding. It's ironic because while I was on the river looking at the remnants of the previous flood, I was thinking how no one paddles the same river twice. It's always changing.
Haven’t been watching your channel long , but Iv really liked all Iv saw plus I’m learning a lot . This video as awesome !
@@gibtannehill9047 Thank you! What canoe are you paddling?
@ actually that’s what started me watching your channel , we currently have kayaks but we are looking at a canoe for my wife and myself to paddle tandom or myself solo , both just paddle or fish small waters . I love quality and I’m leaning towards the esquif prospector 15 . The owner of Terrapin outdoor center in Alabama was sooo nice to talk to me on the phone for over an hour telling me about the canoes , he thinks the prospector 15 or 16 would be great for us in several respects . After watching several reviews and watching your paddles and rigging advise im pretty sure we will go this route . We hike mountain bike kayak and camp . I’m not cutting any brand down I’m just wanting the right canoe for us . Agian I want to thank you for your great videos , I cannot imagine how much time you put into your hobby just to share your love for what you enjoy with people like myself .
@gibtannehill9047 Esquif definitely makes awesome canoes. The esquif Huron is the same mold as the prospecteur but lower gunwales making it less suseptible to wind and it's lighter weight. If you don't plan to paddle white water and want a prospecteur style, might be worth looking at. As far as fishing, seems like I've heard good things about the scout as well. Yes, filming and editing these trips take a tremendous amount of time. I'm glad you have found value in them. My motivation for starting the channel was to take people along. Words can't describe these trips so now I'm trying to capture them on video. Turns out that's a whole skill to learn. 😆
@ the first esquif I ever saw was the Huron and after researching it is what lead me to the prospector 15. The Huron weighed in at 54 lbs +- , I just felt like the 2 3/4 in higher side wall might be better for my being not real verse on canoeing , I did like the less sidewall for wind . Any advise is appreciated .
@gibtannehill9047 do you happen to live near North East alabama. You could paddle mine before you buy.
What a sweet river to paddle on. Have you ever tried standing and poling your canoe? Perfect river for it. start slow and go down stream in easy stuff, take breaks it get easier every time. So good utube channels on it, Canoepoler is one, another is 3 Minutes with a Maine Guide, to start with. I like air pump
I've never technically poled, but I did stand occasionally on this river and use my cheap paddle, but it wasn't super efficient. I definitely need to learn because I hope to do the northern forest canoe trail, and I think it's required for some upstream travel.
@@REXpeditions The NFCT is a bucket list waterway I hope to have the opportunity some day. Take is slow, the poling and you will really enjoy the possibilities it brings.
@downeastprimitiveskills7688 Thank you for the input!
@@REXpeditions A few month back I was looking into the Esquif Prospector and Huron and you channel came up, and thank you back for sharing your experiences. I'm now curious about their T-Formex Lite and how that will hold up to low water rocky conditions, most of what I get to paddle/pole in.
I'm very curious about the TFormex lite as well! I absolutely love my prospecteur! If you don't plan on running whitewater, the Huron might me a good choice. Lower gunwales so less suseptible to wind and lighter weight as well, but same mold as prospecteur.
My man! Knocked it out of the park, AGAIN. 0:19 favorite part.

Great video man! Thanks for bringing us along with you
Thanks bro!
I was shocked at the size of those springs. They make the ones around here seem so tiny
@richardlinton1544 bro there are quite a few up there. The river that drained into the current, jacks fork has springs on it as well.
Nice boat and setup.
Thanks! I love my esquif p15!!!
I'd suggest wearing helmets when going down rapids.
Probably not a bad idea. Thanks for the suggestion.
Great set up,thank you. We love our Prospecteur 15, it is an awesome canoe. We have done lots of trips in it and it is being retired to day trips now.
I've put a couple hundred miles on it now and I love it! It's truly a great canoe!

@ashleynewton7368 yes! It's hilarious. He makes so many funny faces!
Wow! What a trip! This was my first long river trip, and my first time running two cameras. I hope that you can forgive the audio issues. I tried to work around it as much as I knew how. I didn't realize the issues until I got home and reviewed my footage. I definitely learned some of what not to do. Regardless, we had a blast and these are memories we will never forget! See ya on the next one!

Another awesome video Rex, glad the rain was not so bad that the river flooded and you had to cut your trip short, or did it, guess I need to wait for the next video 😀
Lol we were definitely worried about it! The ground was already so saturated. It wouldn't have took much!

Heyy
👋
This may not be good for backpacking but maybe for camping. I tried Idahoan Butter Flavored Mash Potatoes and made potato pancake and it was soooo good. Ratio 2:1 Mash Potato Powder : Self Rising Flour, same amount in water. One Potato Pancake: 1/4 cup Butter Mash Potato powder + 1/8 cup Self Rising Flour, mix dry ingredients, add 3/8 cup water & mix, rest a couple minutes and potato powder will absorb all the water, skillet fry in oil, add pancake syrup. The gluten in the flour is the binder for the potatoes and is self rising.
@miken7629 that sounds amazing. I'm gonna have to try that on my next canoe trip! I'm gonna screen shot this so I will remember the recipe! Thanks for sharing!
Looks good. 15' is a good length. I have a '99 16 ft Old Town Penobscot in Royalex. 58# great boat, but a lot to handle on technical class 2+ rapids single handed. I'm 6'2" and 225#, for reference. I put anti-fatigue floor mat on my carry yoke. THAT is the business. You can see that on my Upper James River trip early in '24. Peace.
@@johnthornley6168 I'll have to check that out. I've been very happy with this canoe! Got a couple hundred miles on it now!
Another great one, Rex! I definitely remember those rapids! Probably the biggest waves I saw on my whole trip there! Well done, bro!! 🛶👍💯
I love seeing coltons face when we run rapids! He loves it. I have the perfect thumbnail for an upcoming video where we run Clabber Creek Shoals on day 5. I froze the camera at the perfect still shoot of his face. 😆

The mountain lake portage and overlook are also very steep. You have to keep the bow of the canoe high for clearance while the stern drags behind you. Mountain is an excellent lake trout lake.
@timwright6816 Yeah, it was a tough portage. Thankfully, it wasn't terribly long. Mountain Lake was beautiful. Do you know anything about the boat that supposedly sunk there?
@@REXpeditions no, this was the first I’ve heard of it. Had to come in from Canada on the eastern end. There’s no way it came over the Clearwater portage. (Unless they dragged it over and the scuttled rather than drag it back).
@timwright6816 hmm interesting. It was on the interactive map on BWCA. I haven't seen anything else about it. Maybe just someone playing a joke on us new comers 😆
Aww, you were a great leader :) Makes me happy to see out of staters come and enjoy the BWCA. I feel like it's kind of a hidden gem, even amongst people from Minnesota. Thanks for the video, you have a wonderful cheery demeanor. Colton looked like he enjoyed it, and hopefully momma has some good memories of it, even if it's a little too much wilderness for her liking.
@@KyleOfTheNorth thank you! I was happy to have my family out there with me! It has always been a dream of mine. Colton is a real champ. He goes with me on a lot more trips now that he's getting older. The Buffalo River was a huge trip he did with me earlier this year. He loved it. Ashley definitely made some good memories. She says this trip made her appreciate our car camping much more 😆.
@@REXpeditions I'd like to get down to the Buffalo River sometime, looks beautiful.
@KyleOfTheNorth it truly is. I didn't realize how blessed we were to paddle the whole thing until after the trip. The upper sections sheds water fast, so there's small windows to run it. It just landed just right for us!
"That's never a good sign!" Lol- I don't like seeing old hulls, either! Nice save on Day 1. Been there, done that!! Nailed it on Day 2! Beautiful river and great adventure/video, Rex!!
Thanks! This was one of my first river trips. It's a nice quick overnight paddle!
Hey, Beeman from Canada here again. I am considering another canoe in T former or similar material. It will allow me to do some trips that might be a little rougher on the canoe. I currently have a Swift 15' prospector in carbon fusion - lovely flatwater canoe but certainly not built for banging off rocks - and it's probably about 32 lbs so it means a a big increase in weight. How do you like your Esquif 15" now that you've been on a few trips?
I absolutely love it! I have grown to feel very confident in it and it has taken the abuse of a new canoist. Esquif just came out with TFormex Lite. I don't know how durable it is compared, but it is lighter weight. Might be worth looking at.
@@REXpeditions Thanks. They are WAY less expensive that Nova Craft which (for reasons I'm not sure about) seem to be the go to canoe for the guys I follow on UA-cam who do pretty extreme expeditions
@86beeman Nova Craft has Tuff Stuff Expedition which is lighter weight than TFormex. I believe that's why so many choose it over esquif. However, you often see them patching and repairing them along the way. They're not as durable as TFormex. I guess the buyer has to decide which is more important, weight or durability. I strongly considered Nova Craft.
I have been watching your content over the past few days. I was just on a trip a couple weeks ago and a buddy of mine wrapped his canoe. It was a sad sight to see, but thankfully he was ok. It happened so fast in mild class 1. Glad to see you didn't pin your canoe on this one. Close call. Anyway, the event got me rethinking the prospecteur 15, just picked one up yesterday! Keep up the great content. Just subbed ya. I'll be talking to you! Keep on keeping on
Thanks for the positive feedback. This was my first river trip and I have definitely built my confidence and skill in my canoe since then. Still got a lot to learn. I'm in love my with P15! I love it more every time I take it out. It's a great canoe! Looking forward to hearing from you and thanks for the sub!
Nice family outing. Ashley, you looked a bit out of your comfort zone - well done for helping to make that all happen. Colton, what a trooper. Making memories, Yes the Canadian accents were awful, eh? LOL.
Ashley definitely was out of her comfort zone! It has made our car camping seem much more luxurious to her. 😆 We gonna have to work on those accents! But at the end of the day, we just country folks from Alabama! 😆
