First generation Pentium 4 vs Pentium III-S
We are looking at one of the first Pentium 4s, the 1400Mhz from 2000.
We couple it with a MSI MS-6339, AGP Pro - RDRAM combo.
The graphics card used for this project is the GeForce 2 GTS.
We're aiming to see how does the Pentium 4 compare with the previous generation of CPUs.
Is it able to overpower a Pentium III-S running at 1400Mhz? Or a Tualatin Celeron running at 1400Mhz?

    Great video! Enjoyed it As for the video card, I'd love to see a PowerVR Kyro II (Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 comes to mind) and test games on D3D with little to no TnL. Although, overall, GF2 is way better with OpenGL, Kyro II is scaling much nicer, you don't need 3rd party tools to access all settings, lower power consumption etc.

    Definitely GF4Ti4400. GeForce 3 is pretty much the same GPU but much slower and with DTX1 texture quality issue - which was actually making some DX7 and DX8 games to look pretty bad. There is little to no technical reason to use older GPU.

    I remember being envious of anyone who had DFI LanParty boards. I also think there was socket 940 for dual core CPUs? I always wanted a dual core CPU, but could only afford an Athlon 64 3000+, which still ran rings around my old 2.4GHz P4-based Celeron. Ran much cooler too.

      I didn't see the light of DFI until I was already a man. But around 2016 when i bought my first 939 dfi they were cheap and available. Back in the day, probably around 2008, I had an Epox with a x2 4200 that served me for about 3 years. (I think 940 is the server variant for am2? Not sure though)

      @@retrodrive-thru47 The thing to consider with NT based OS is that they are extremely stable because of the Hardware Abstraction Layer or HAL. That is why the minimum CPU jumped from from 40 MHz to 233 MHz from Windows 95 to Windows XP (Vista was egregious at 600 MHz). It takes more CPU to run a HAL, the trade off is less blue screens. An ideal computer that used most of the CPU power you gave it would run Windows 95 with updated drivers and software but we won't get that until that OS becomes Open Source.You might look at 98 SE as I believe many drivers exist for it and it is still HALless. There was even a version of Crysis Maximum edition that said it supported 98 SE but no one ever tested it.

If you have the patience for another clip on this channel, Best retro OS by comparison, using a p4 2.4ghz I've come to the conclusion that windows xp is faster using that cpu than windows 98 for most of the tests. So from a performance point of view the newer versions of windows are more efficient with the hardware. That video in itself may not very well made since it was the second I've done but to me was on of the hottest topics I could think of and I plan to follow it up with other CPUs and configurations as soon as I figure out why the AMD had the issues.

    While I think that motherboard is great at comparing PCIe and AGP video cards, it's not a good platform for PCI. PCI video cards will likely be bottlenecked at 32-bit @ 33MHz. You really should be testing PCI video cards in a PCI-X slot, to see their true potential.

    • @retrodrive-thru47
      @retrodrive-thru47 Місяць тому

      Wow, that's really something I haven't considered. I can do this because I have a xeon motherboard with pci-x. It also has pci so I can test the difference. Do you think that the card will behave different? After all the card itself is made for 32bit @33mhz so putting it into a faster slot may not yield better results...but it's a fun test to do. The only constraint I had for this project regarding the PCIs was that no other pci device to be connected so they don't share the limited bandwidth of the southbridge.

    • @brianbuchholtz1521
      @brianbuchholtz1521 Місяць тому

      A lot of the more recent PCI video cards are actually 32-bit @ 66MHz. If the card has two notches, they can be used in both 5v and 3.3v PCI slots. This is usually indicative of supporting PCI-X.

      I'm also not sure that 4.9 would be of any importance but the constant variation between 4.9 and 5 I think was the issue.

    NFS 5 kinda shows that the TNT (which launched only 3 months after the Voodoo2), was already pretty much ahead of the voodoo. Higher resolution textures might not have been a thing back in early 1998, but nVidia were clearly thinking ahead... not to mention that the TNT was already a DirectX6 card. While the Voodoo2 was only DX5 with maybe some DX6 features. And also the fact that you need 2x Voodoo2 for NFS5 to work as well as it does on a single TNT that's also displaying higher res textures, kinda makes you wonder!...

      Indeed, but I still felt a little love from the developers for glide. Little graphical treats that can only be seen if you are really paying attention. Too bad we didn't get to see more of glide.

      @@retrodrive-thru47 There were, though, 3 generations of the Glide API, AFAIK... each represented by their Glide.dll file (glide.dll, glide2x.dll and glide3x.dll). And by the end of 1999, and the launch of DX7; DirectX managed to catch up and surpass the glide API, making it pretty much obsolete. 3dfx Glide, starting as a stripped down version of OpenGL, pretty much did it's job bringing fast & good looking 3D graphics to the (very) low powered PCs of the mid 90's. But by the end of the millennium, computing power was almost 10x what is was @ '95 when Glide was conceived... so you could just use OpenGL, or the newly matured DirectX, which brought pretty much everything that 3dfx Glide did, and more... So IMO, Glide had a sufficiently long run to a) set an example of how things should be b) give us nice looking 3D games until the industry caught up :) By the year 2000, there were no tricks left up it's sleeve... 3dfx Glide was "that cool friend" or cousin, that everyone had, that used to bring you mp3s & games, before you had an internet connection :)

    I bought an ATI X850 XT from Ebay about 2 years ago and absolutely fell in love with its retro gaming capabilities, it is the AGP version though but I don't think there's much of a difference if you can get the PCI-E version to work in 98, awesome card. By the way, I think you may also be CPU bottlenecked, no hate towards the Pentium 4 northwood but I managed to push this card a lot further with a Socket 939 rig.

      The cpu is bottlenecking the graphics card, yes. I used it because it was the fastest I had so I was trying my best to match the graphics card. I think an A64 is better but a core 2 duo is even better.

      @@retrodrive-thru47 I understand! It really doesn't matter for a Windows 98 gaming PC though as you'll be able to max out every game even with AA and AF forced in the ATI control panel. The X850 XT is the best card for Windows 98 when it comes to performance while still maintaining good game compatibility, I tested a LOT of games and demos and nearly all of them worked out of the box with no patches required. I also tried using a 6800 GT with Windows 98 and I completely regret it. 😅😅

    for that sound card to work for dos games you need the sound card to be set on irq 5. there is a dos driver fix on vogons forums that works with that.

    I'm surprised you didn't compare the AGP x850 vs the the PCI E x850 to see if there is a difference.

    • @retrodrive-thru47
      @retrodrive-thru47 4 місяці тому

      I did compare AGP vs PCI-E a while back on the channel (granted it was 3850 and 7900) but I also did this kind of comparison for myself a few years ago and it usually turns out (if you do it on a motherboard with a good implementation of AGP and PCI-E) that if you have graphics cards with the same frequencies they are equal. The manufacturers usually have slightly higher memory on the PCI-E therefore sometimes these need to be underclocked a bit. But it's a good idea for a future video. Maybe I can do a series with all the couples of PCI-E - AGP cards I have, as I have specifically collected many similar cards like that.
