    I like watching your videos. However as a long time instructor in other non water sport areas I know I have no more than 5mins to get an idea over. This video is too long at nearly 20 mins. I do understand that youtube encourages creators to make longer videos......... This is what I would like you to do: 1) set up a boat on land. Space below to show paddle inserted in "water" 2) 4 simultaneous vdeo feeds. Left, right, back, front. 3) All displayed in video at the same time. 4) Show problem, then solution 5) Do very slow replays. I have never yet seen a youtube video that replays slowly enough to be useful. Doing this is much harder than talking heads.

    I teach my trainees to have exactly this rythm. Give your boat a speed and let it go. Nice and slow catch and then leg driven blast (pull) and exit the paddle as fast as possible. Then slow down and remain in the air.. This is the key to energy efficient paddling.

    Amazing video as always. I am a marathon kayaker/surfski; I don’t know anything about sprint C1. Why doesn’t the paddle have a cant like a kayak paddle does? It appears power is still being applied after the blade has passed vertical and a cant would help prevent pulling the boat down. Does it have something to do with the for-aft weight shift and pulling the rear of the boat down helps squirt the front up over the water?

    • @gigharborpaddling
      @gigharborpaddling 4 місяці тому

      The canoe paddles are straight mainly for steering(in my opinion)with a small indent in the spine for grabbing more water. The end of the stroke can be in the negative angle as long as it is being used properly for pressing off of while the hip is already forward(I believe we have a video about this concept). If a blade in any watersport is in the negative due to passive dragging then yes it will negatively affect the boat causing downward motion in the nose. In canoe, more of the body is being used for power due to lunging (vs sitting)and has the largest range of motion so there isn't as much need for the cant (which helps short strokes be a little longer).

    How many sets per training would you prescribe for your example of the Z5 workout?

    • @gigharborpaddling
      @gigharborpaddling 4 місяці тому

      It depends on the level of athlete and what time of the season. Ideally for well trained athletes I would prescribe something similar to this: (10"/2:50 × 4)/5' x 2. This reads "10 seconds on, 2minutes 50 seconds off times 4. Then an extra 5 minutes rest. Repeat. If you go too long(closer to 30 seconds on) then you will deplete the phosphogen system after a few reps. It's all about repeatable quality.

    Девочка в розовой лодке, очень хорошая, она чувствует гребок, с практикой булет грести очень хорошо. Ребята перед ней что были в видео гамного хуже- движения не гармоничные. Таз уходит от весла и теряется опора.

  • @user-lo9tw1yz1e
    @user-lo9tw1yz1e 5 місяців тому

    9:25 у девочки не работает весло. Центр весла не должен смещаться относительно туловища. Весло должно крутиться в точке, находящейся ровно в центре весла. А она эту точку смещает и поэтому не может поймать опору на лопасти весла. Представьте что в лодке перед гребцом установили вертикально шест с шарниром и на этот шарнир закрепили цевьё весла ровно посередине. Вот на этом шарнире весло и должно крутиться. Самое главное обеспечить правильную траекторию работы весла. Иначе ничего не добиться. Можно сколько угодно показывать работу корпуса и ног, но не понимая, как должно работать весло, спортсмен будет как слепой котёнок тыкаться и пробовать всё подряд, а вдруг получится?

    Hey! Been watching your videos recently and found it a great resource to learn about sprint paddling! Could you share some tips on how to be coordinated in a team boat and whether one should paddle it differently to a K1? Ive been having trouble with feeling resistance in the water when paddling a k4

    • @gigharborpaddling
      @gigharborpaddling 6 місяців тому

      Great question and prompt for a potential future video. To answer your question in short- yes you must paddle a little different in a teamboat than in a single. You also must paddle different per seat you are in for each boat. Stroke seat is much different than second and third and fourth. If you are having trouble finding the "grab" of the catch then the timing is off. To start, we would recommend doing the backing drill where the paddlers together back the boat up and slowly but firmly reverse one last stroke into the catch position and hold. Repeat until smooth and in unison.

    the guy in the black C-1, his top arm is flopping all over the place, needs to be more ridged, he is loosing a lot of power on his catch. One of my fav workouts was 2 x 2500 at 70% effort followed by 10x60 seconds on 60 seconds off at 90%. You have such a nice open training area. We had a 16 mile Creek where we could hardly get 4 boats across. How is the wash from everyone, must get a little chaotic in the middle of the pack.

    Like for hard work and teaching young canoeists. It seems to me that story is to much complicated and they do not understand it well enough. Try it simple....Transfer blade forward through air very slowly like slow motion try to minimum slow down boat speed it is important. Then just put blade a little above the water and in that position first move should be push or kick knee in the knee blok then everything will go just as it should go.That is only natural way to make good stroke forgot the catch fase new paddles and blades are wide and they will catc resist emidiatly

    Few unsolicited suggestions for the young athlete narrating the video and showing his technique. Top hand on both sides needs to come down to eye level. At the end of rotation, the top hand ends chin level no higher, so his hand needs to come down lower. Due to that issue, the reach at entry and the overall stroke are shorter than optimum. There is a lack of rotation. The athlete needs to work on more rotation. What the video does not show is the centerline of the boat so that other stroke elements can be assessed. 13 years old is very young. 500m times are not a good predictor. 13 year old boys do not have fully developed muscular and anaerobic glycolitic system. That comes much later. If I were coaching, I would center his development around 1000m-5k, not 500m. For the coach, canoe sprint being an outdoor sport does not recognize times as official metric in any records. The quoted 500m could have been recorded with 20mph tailwind, so no need to quote the times. Placement speaks for itself.

    you should be focusing on sitting up and initiating the stroke with the hip. The young lady (1:20-1:30) is riding her knee. Meaning, she is putting weight on the front leg when she is in the reach. This motion drives the boat down and increases resistance and slows the boat. To start, there should not be any reach till the hip is in motion. Initiation with the hip will assist in a smoother recovery and help with balance.
