The best espresso grinder I ever had - Versalab M4 coffee grinder

Might be my favourite grinder for espresso until now. Enough clarity, good complexity, nice body and industrial look.
Versalab M4 Grinder with ssp DRM burr
Переглядів 584Рік тому
Was a 2012 versalab that has all the upgrades to M4. I was from a Hedone Honne and super excited to have this state of art Versalab. I had lot of work recently to make it looks nicer than it just came. Alignments, marker tests, new feets, metal polishing, deep cleaning, new dial, magmatic ground tray and lot more. ENJOY THE VIDEO PLEASE and DRM is the answer.
Syphon coffee + Beam Heater, lagom p100, Versa Cup in a raining day

Syphon might already be an old fashion way of make coffee, but it is also one of the most elegant way of doing it. I am very new to this set up syphon beam heater. The taste is good as filter coffee, however the cleaning process of syphon pot is definitely hard compare with pour over. Please feel free to share your experience.

This is my morning workflow working with Hedone Honne from Romania, which have similar design with Versalab/titus style that has 68mm conical together with 68mm flat burrs.

Where did you get the cover for the bean shoot? Love that idea. I’ve been using my fingers to keep the beans from flying out
Are your markings on the Versalab a sticker from the P100?
Yes😂
@@Jun-qd6oz LOL! Love it. Good fit?
Is it silent?
Yep
In Taiwan , I can't buy hedone honne So I buy Lagom P64 to make the espresso
This is my next grinder but Titus version with red speed coating applications.
How do you like the moonraker after three months?
The sound of the Decent is the most indecent sounding machine I’ve ever heard 😣🙉
Is there a difference in taste with the Moonraker?
I used to done a pretty good manual WDT with BH Comb tool. The Moonraker no doubt will be more consistant, but more for me is an improvement towards puck prep experience and life quality.
A bit of channeling there, try tamping softer.
I keep hearing that tamping in binary i.e. hard enough or not hard enough - is this not correct?@@i_Lndr
It’s not a good shot. Try grind it coarser.
mess shot
That machine sounds like an old 2 stroke moped trying to cold start 😅
Did you find significant retention with the lab sweets?
I wonder how the Versalab M4 can be compared with the Honne based on your experience. The Honne seems almost very identical to the M4.
Well, my opinions only based on the experience of both of the Grinder I had.. you might be lucky to get a better experience or aligned grinder out of factory and hence please only take my experience as reference only..Honne does have some improvements on Versalab. Like in terms of retention(my Versalab ocationally drop grounds after grinding) , adjustment dials, portafilter fork design, no need to lock dial after adjustment, espresso range(this might because from the burrs of itamil from Honne and ssp on Versalab). Versalab does a better job in appearance(to my taste), materials using. other than above, you might want to consider if you like an Lamborghini or a Lamborghini replica? If you get lucky like me, a second hand Versalab with lower price might be a good option, at least for me..personally I enjoy the process of taking extra hours and days on aligning and cleaning a second hand grinder. Hope this help.
I’m sure the seven makes superb espresso but it just sounds so cheap. The sound of the pump reminds me of an espresso machine and why I’ll never buy one.
Do you really need to WDT? I have the Titus version of the Versalab by Frank Durra. No RDT, no WDT, I just tap and tamp. I removed the portafilter after grinding and turn on the grinder and a few clumps drop from the wiper. I will try tapping the portafilter holder as you did. I have also been trying it with pour over and it works great.
Emmmm… I can’t really see how your shot looks like without RDT. I did RDT only because I want water preinfused evenly at the beginning, you see espresso show up at the centre and edge of basket at the same time . If you see your shot not start from the centre, then you should be okey without RDT. Titus should be much improved from Versalab. 😊
@@Jun-qd6oz With a VST basket (14 grams) it flows from the center. I get multiple flow with a Weber Unifilter for 20 grams. I use a puck screen and paper for both.
@@RTOBarista Ohh.. Surprisingly see the difference from different baskets. Then you should be fine without RDT then. Nice grinder!
Better then the Honne?
Honne has a better portafilter forks, less retention, and belt cover etc. The rest all pretty much the same. But strangely I prefer Versalab for the look and history.
Thank you!
Have you tried it for pour over? I have tried my Titus four pour over and it is good.
Good point. It will be 99.9% espresso as I have a p100 as well. But I will give a try later!
Syphon coffee is not as good as filter coffee . The fact is much much better than filter coffee
I swapped to use paper filter with syphon as well, which makes the cleaning easier!
How would you compare the p100 vs p64 is the price difference noticeable in the cup?
Look. p100 is definitely more advanced than p64 in both engineering and taste in cup. However, p100 is 50% more expensive than p64 but it does not exceed 50% more tasty than p64 (probably 5 - 10%) . P64 will be cheaper for burrs if you want to try something new.
@Jun thank you for youre response, I am trying to justify the price difference and probably will buy the p100 as I will always have that "what if" with the p64
@@navidqowsi5618 Yes! Smart decision. p100 is significantly cheaper than its 98mm rivals, consider Monolith max, eg-1(80mm), Titus nautilus etc.
How you liking the P100, ive been thinking about getting one. I believe the static reduces once the burrs are seasoned in.
P100 is really good grinder and I hope I can spend 10 years at least at it. Static problem haven't change much yet... after few kg in already. Good luck on your purchasing.
@@Jun-qd6oz thanks, are you able to pull traditional shots with the P100.
@@i_Lndr absolutely, even some light roast with pre-infusion.
Do they send it out in Fellow boxes? 🧐
Good eyes! The box should be from local retailer AB, not from lagom.
You sold your Hedone grinder?
Yes, but don't get me wrong Hedone/DRM burr set is good. I will probably end up with a Titus DRM burr in the end but allow me some time to save $ haha.
Lol, im the same, saving for a titus DRM too complement my londinium.
@@i_Lndr Considering titus is designing a roller mill, it will be a harder decision to make tho. Anyway, save $ first.
Thanks for the video. You have an enviable setup!
Hello friend do you have instagram?
Did you post the 3D print anywhere for the BH Comb set up? Fun video
Great video, thanks for posting. I’ve been considering the Honne for espresso with my Londinium, to replace or supplement a Niche for single dosing. How would you compare the espresso from Niche and Honne?
Great video - do you have a preference between the Lagom and Heddone?
Thank you for the question. This reminds someone ask me when I am young "do you prefer your mom or dad?". lol. Quick answer is, I like them both and I use them both for different usages. I like espresso from Honne, and filter coffee from hyper-aligned ssp lab sweet lagom is unparalleled for the balance of clarity and body.
Awesome setup mate, my buddy had the versalab m4, then got the hedone honne and loves it. There is an 3d attachment you can get from hedone for dosing.. I myself have been looking at getting one, excellent price compared to Titus and Versalab and just as good. I’m currently use the Monolith flat and londinium LR.
Sounds like a nice set up you had! I do have a original 3d attachment funnel from Honne. But their attachment is kind of over bulky and I enjoy to be able to see how the coffee getting grind or see through the burr. I ard installed another popcorn anti-stopper in Honne as you see in video, it is black 3d printed, much smaller, lighter, but barely can see it from video as it is black. It works extremely well to stop popcorns.
Did you get a chance to commpare hedone honne to Monolith suriken burrs and Niche?
