The complicated case of Indigenous Taiwan
Hello and welcome to this little island amid the ocean that UA-cam is. A bit differently from my previous videos, which were more focused on the cultural and historical characteristics of an indigenous group; today we will be looking at a broader situation, meaning we will talk about Taiwan’s indigenous people which are composed of different recognised and unrecognised groups.

European Parliament: A citizen's choice

With the upcoming European Parliament elections in June 2024 (6th-9th June); I thought it could be interesting for those who must vote - and for those just curious about it - to do a video regarding what is the European Parliament (EP), what does it do (how it influences on decisions) and how does the voting system work. “How to Vote”: elections.europa.eu/en/ “What Europe does for me”: what-eur...
The Ryūkyū - The Unrecognised Indigenous of Japan
Переглядів 2,2 тис.5 місяців тому
Japan is often perceived as a cohesive ethnic country, in which its predominant ethnic group is the Yamato or Wajin. The term Yamato marks social and cultural differences from other ethnic groups; and the concept of “pure blood” as criteria for the uniqueness of the Yamato, would begin to spread in Japan around 1880 in which was initially used to justify the conquest of Asia. We’ve spoke of the...

Often perceived as a cohesive ethnic country, Japan’s prominent ethnic group is the Yamato or Wajin. The term Yamato was created in the 4th century, and it marked social and cultural differences from other ethnic groups. But who are these other ethnic groups often pushed to the margins? On today’s video we will look into one of Japan’s indigenous groups, the Ainu. Please find below (pinned comm...
The Hetmanate

Last time we looked into Ukraine’s history we learned that although a powerful force, civil strife, foreign incursions and partitions would undermine and, eventually, divide the Cossacks. As chaos subsided, the Hetmanate on the left Bank of the Dnieper would emerge as the centre of Ukrainian political, cultural, and econ...

A Bookseller was a craftsman who, by request, made books by joining and sewing the sheets that came from the copyist with a cover - some were themselves copyists. In Portugal booksellers organized the profession early on, as the trade was mentioned in the letter of D. João II of August 27, 1539. Yet, prior to 1740 the term “bookstore” was a synonym of library. We see the term “bookstore” as “a ...

Are you sure that during the Qing empire the aborigines learned mandarin? Because from what I know at the end of the Japanese period, barely anyone spoke mandarin. Or did you meant to say that they learned it as a secondary language? That could have easily dissappeared later then.

Thank you! So glad you've enjoyed it <3 Indeed, I knew the US still had a heavy presence in Okinawa to this day, but prior to my research I wasn't aware it had been directly under the US so long. It's always fun to learn where something (such as an instrument) has its origins, and I agree, its an amazing instrument! I highly recommend watching kumi-odori performances😁

During my research I did stumble quite a few times on references from the anime "Ryuukyuu Timeline: Mirai Shoujo to Inishie no Ou", but unfortunately I didn't had the time to watch it whilst preparing this video. I'm curious to see how historically accurate it might be, as well as the animated movie "Katsuren Omoro Sōshi"; so thanks! You just added another anime to my list 😆

According to the article "Unique characteristics of the Ainu population in Northern Japan", mainland Japanese are the result of a mixture between ancestors of Han Chinese/Koreans and Ainu (which represent the Yayoi and Jomon peoples). The article is extremely interesting I 100% recommend it if you have the time to spare 😄 Jinam, T., Kanzawa-Kiriyama, H., Inoue, I. et al. The Ainu closest relative genetically are the Ryukyuan who lives in southern archipelago which seems odd because most Ainus live in Hokkaido, miles away to the north. This suggest the Ainus are originally from southern island later migrated up north and assimilate culturally to the Nivkh people inhabited the Sakhalin island

Just because their DNA trace can be linked to South Asia does not mean that the Ainu come from there, instead imagine them having a collective ancestor in Native Americans, this also makes sense with the introduction of the potato, this simple vegetable is very loved in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Philippines and has roots in South America from the native people, this is also how the potato was introduced to the Polynesian islands. It is believed that the Polynesians have origins in native Americans (South America), they brought the potato with them as their most important passenger, and it was the first thing they did, plant the potatoes. The native Mayan, and Inca people of South America has a deep tradition of tattoo. Polynesians also has a tradition of tattoos, so do the Ainu. in my humble opinion the Native South Americans took to sea, became the Polynesians, and then created colonies in east Asia, and south east Asia.

Really interesting video! Portugal's (and Spain's) fascism during the 20th century were for never part of my history education growing up over here in the Netherlands. I guess because they didn't really have a role in WW2? Anyways nice to find something like this on UA-cam to at least get some idea what happened. Especially good to learn about now anti-democratic politics seem to be on the rise again around Europe...

    • @TheDiplomaticAdvocate
      @TheDiplomaticAdvocate Рік тому

Thank you so much for your comment! Indeed, in Portugal's case it took a "neutral" position in WW2 (as neutral as a country can actually be during a war) so even though both sides of the war still had an eye in the country (for who could really be sure that at some point it didn't sway from neutral to ally/enemy) public attention wasn't particularly given to it - especially most history books nowadays. Then during the post-war all efforts and attention were in recovering from the war, so naturally Portugal was once again more "at the back of the mind". Something that was commonly spoken here in Portugal [and criticised by some] was precisely "the western world avoiding/ignoring on purpose" the portuguese situation (the ongoing colonial war + dictatorship). But it's important to note, "the west" was rebuilding, and (this is my opinion) there wasn't much they could do without outright imposing themselves to Portugal which could potentially lead to yet another war (which of course was the last thing everyone needed). So I do think the Carnation Revolution teaches the importance of the _population_ action rather than the "outsider reaction"; ultimately, no matter how easy it is to forget so, the power is in the *people*, dictatorship or not, it's power can only go so far as Society allows it to go (of course all it's easier said than done) thus the "breaking points" we see throughout history. History is so rich and has so much for us to learn from it and avoid to make the "same old mistakes" and yet...almost 2024 and everything is a mess once again. It's scary, sad, and eerie watching anti-democratic politics rise in Europe...one would expect *we* have learned from our past mistakes, right..? 😅

[ENG] Hello! Just want to clarify that I said a date incorrectly (so sorry!) yet the subtitles are correct [brain freeze while recording and tired brain editing is a bad mix]...the bookstore appears [Gazeta de Lisboa] with a new commercial designation of "Pedro Faure and Bertrand brothers", book merchants on the corner of Rua do North on March 14th, 1747 [not 1745].
