The willows displayed appear to be the Chinese weeping willow. Since it's non native, butterflies are unlikely to use it as a host plant. A good big willow would be the Black willow and there's many small willows for small spaces.

Florida has 21 species of native milkweed. Each one has different soil preferences and conditions. So you can find the species that works best in your yard. Tropical milkweed and giant milkweed that are now being promoted and sold through box storesin Florida are so detrimental to our monarch population.

Why is the Giant Milkweed detrimental to the monarch population. It seems monarchs gravitate to them, lay eggs and have plenty of feed for the caterpillars?

Very few butterflies at my house in Oakdale, MN. I usually have 7 butterfly enclosures filled with eggs/caterpillars from black swallowtail and monarchs that I find on my flowers. This summer only 2 swallowtail cats and one monarch. My butterfly bushes should be filled with all types of butterflies and there are none to be found. My meadow blazing star is blooming, and so far just a couple of monarchs when they usually are covered in them. Hoping next year is a better butterfly year.

Calotropis Gigantea has allelopathic effects on surrounding environments; inviting nitrogen fixing plants to grow and bloom. In simple terms it helps make arid dry soils fertile. The milk could have been an ingredient to the legendary "Soma" drink. One more interesting fact, it bear's the favorite flower of Lord Shiva, the mightiest Hindu god.

The video of the otter was from a distance so it looked small. I am pretty sure it is an otter as we have seen a family of otters playing and foraging down in the lake behind our house this summer. Otters are also know to eat small mammals if they are able to catch them. It is so black which also leads me to think it is an otter. Although, mink and weasels have similar body shapes, so you may be right that it is something other than an otter. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for showing us you're beautiful garden. It must be nice to live near the water seeing all that wildlife. Here in N.Y i haven't seen that many butterflies in the past two years now. Only one black swallowtail and just now a few monarchs. I thought maybe it had to do with the smoke coming down from Canada on account of the wildfires last year. But this year hardly any either. We've been getting alot of hot and humid weather here but also rain in-between which is great for the gardens. Looking forward to fall. This has really been the hottest summer. Hi Dave; I finally found you again. I don't know if you remember me. My name is Roger and I live in Idaho. I planted Layatris about three years ago. They did great but they were the white variety. I can't find this variety anywhere. Mine had several purple ones sprout the second year but I haven't had any since. This year they haven't done as well. It has been brutal on all of my plants this year because of the scorching, ongoing heat. They finally bloomed but they didn't get very tall and there were several that never came back up this summer. When you mentioned the smoke and heat it hit home. I think the Tussock moths are part of the natural world and aren't a significant issue. The bigger issue is the reduction of milkweed for monarchs and the Tussock moth. I read about a fellow who planted a 1/4 acre of milkweed and had several hundred that he raised. The next year he grew 2 acres of milkweed. And they remembered and brought their friends. •  28 днів тому

@@davethebutterflyguy9841 Yes, absolutely. It also goes to show it doesn't take that much to make a big difference if just two acres seeded with milkweed is showing up in migration patterns. I bet there are a lot of farmers and land owners with fallow fields that would be happy to seed them with milkweed if they knew how beneficial it would be. 2 acres is nothing for a lot of these folks in the country. Or even parks departments and municipalities or corporate parks and college campuses. Everyone needs to chip in to save our pollinators.

Thanks for thinking about the butterflies. I made a video a few years ago about placing a butterfly feeder in my garden. The liquid in it is similar to a hummingbird feeder. However, I never see butterflies on the feeder except when I place rotting fruit on it. So, I don't think you will get butterflies with a hummingbird feeder, however, I do think if you place fruit out, such as oranges, bananas, berries, especially once they are getting a bit old and starting to rot, you will get butterflies. Interesting as I just relayed a story I heard about a guy who grew a 1/4 acre of milkweed and raised several hundred and had a few thousand monarchs and then the next year he did 2 acres and they remembered and came back and brought friends and he got tens of thousands and his property was showing up on migration maps. Just 2 acres in one year.

The monarchs and swallowtails that come to my yard, absolutely prefer the zinnias, butterfly bushes and heirloom burgundy monarda. And yes, I have some hyssop. It’s interesting how their preferences vary from yard to yard/garden to garden.

Thanks for sharing! Zinnias and Butterfly Bush do great in my garden. However, Hyssop, seems to get the most action. Thanks for creating all your butterfly habitat!

Hi, luv your info on Mourning Cloaks. I live in So. California and have 12 Mourning Cloaks chrysalis on my front porch beginning on June 10...seven have hatched and gone their merry way, and still have 5 hanging in various spots on porch. They are so beautiful, but I live in a city and find it extremely odd that these butterflies can survive here. Is this common for the Cloaks?

Wow, you have a Mourning Cloak nursery! To survive in the city, they need access to host plants like willows, elm, aspen and birch trees. As an adult butterfly they need access to food like rotting fruit, sap and nectar. I would think these food items are located in the city but it is surprising.

I've been considering planting lavender for a few years now, thanks for the info and reminder! I'm going to get some seeds for next year. Maybe some bee balm too! Happy summer from Maine!☀️

Sounds great! Lavender is a great smelling plant, I think you will like it. Bee Balm is hearty and expands quickly. I planted a couple of plants and now they take up a big part of the garden as they grow through seeds and rhizomes. Good Luck!

It's a good idea to have flowers for the bees, too!

Well I'll tell ya, the mint family sure is useful from feline stimulants to phenomenal herbal teas and treats, and as the video clearly states, they're all rabbit and deer repellant. P.S our native mints like Mountain Mint, specific salvias, and a few others are a pollinators dream.💚
