Exploring Hand Printing Beyond the Gelli Plate
If you’ve explored hand printing at home, chances are you’ve worked with a gel plate. It’s a great tool-but did you know it’s not the only option? In fact, printing on a harder surface, as I do, can open up entirely new creative possibilities.
In this video, I’ll share the pros and cons of working without a gel plate and how it can deepen your printmaking practice.

What are favorite ink/paints?
That is one heck of a piece - stunning! Oh and watching how you attach was very good too! TVM
Why do you use oil instead of acrylic
Is the surface you-work on a piece of glass?
Your techniques are interesting, your constant talking is a confusing distraction. Using ….your Baron? Was he in your cupboard?
What ink do you use?
I have a huge smile seeing this, Ruth. I found a metre long piece of thin/flexible plastic on my walk yesterday. It is likely a cover from a sign, blown off in storm Eowyn. Of course, I bagged it to use for printing 😃👍
Thanks from Margarita Island.Venezuela
Thx!
Just discovered your channel! 🎉 I am new to hand printing, and really enjoy watching 😊 When you make these collage tissue papers with oil paint, do you still use acrylic mediums to glue them? Thank you so much for sharing❣️
Great video please provide what ink you use. Thank you!
Lovely ideas, can you do this with watercolors?
Great ideas! Thank you. What kind of ink are you using?
Thank you, this is very helpful.
Could I get the link pleease
@@christinewebster3384 hi Christine, all the links are in the description.
Brilliant ❤
Wow 😮😮😮😮
Great video. Why do you use oil paint instead if ink?
So great of you to makre this vulnerable video about the cost of making art. Art is a lot of work for not much money. That said you actually did quite well to net 14 from a gross of 20. Its easy to net 0 from a gross of 20. I quite travel to art shows because of the low return after expenses. I quit a gallery because of low sales and 50%. Selling is the hardest part. This channel probably helps collectors find you. .
Good ideas here. Printing experiments are so much fun. But how do you clean plastic and aluminum plates without scratching and without using mass anounts of thinner? Thanks
Found u today, thanks a lot for your info., really helpful.❤ Maybe you might think of adding a "buy me coffee" option in the description (?) Would love to support you in the small way I am able to right now.😊🌺
What about rice flour? could it be a substitute??
Love!
Love it!!!
This is the most exciting opportunity and exactly what I was waiting for.
It’s really inspiring and informative !! I wanted to try Gelli printing, but now I can try hand printing with what I have. Thank you 😊
Informative video, and you gave me some ideas to try with my glass and plexiglass monoprinting plates. Jelly plates, or commercially hectography, has been around since the mid 1800s anw was still used for commercial into 1960s. Primarily, it was used to reproduce line work and text in aniline based inks, and was replaced by mimeography and solvent duplicators. Hand poured trays continued to be fairly common throughout the 1970s and into the more the more recent resurgence. As a happy medium, instead of a gel plate, you can use a silicone sheet, which gives the transfer qualities of a gel plate with the firmer surface of the tabletop.
So cool. Thanks for sharing.
Very interesting. Unfortunately, I had trouble catching all you said due to the speed of your talking.
You can slow the speed in the settings by clicking on the cog ⚙️ icon.
Yes great setting! I use it to speed up the video if I want things to move faster, and slow it down if they talk too fast for me to keep up. 😊
Very interesting video, and I could understand you just fine.
So great again, Ruth! This has given me some really practical ideas of ways I can make it work.🙂
Cheers 🤟
Great stuff Ruth. I’ve always liked the idea of printing but presses are so expensive, you have shown us over the years the potential to produce lovely prints without a press.Thank you
don't posca pens bleed and run though? Whenever I've used them along with Molotow markers, the pigment just smudges everywhere. It even happens when I try to use a fixative. How do you make this work in your mix-media?
Really interesting, cheers 🤟
Really interesting, cheers 🤟
Really interesting l, thanks 🤟
It is so informative when you explain these little details you add to a print to make the composition work. Thank you 😀
Thanks--love it! What ink and paper are you using and what is your printing surface? Looks like a piece of glass?
Hi Ann, it's actually a piece of plastic- perspex. I have used glass before though (glass from old picture frames with tape round the edges works well). Or a large, flat ceramic tile, or plastic place mat are also good options.
I'm mainly using oil paint as well- my go-to for hand printing!
Wonderful work I just ❤ it....thank you for excellent demonstration now going to binge watch more of your videos.....I have liked and subscribed to show support for your channel hugs from Scotland 🤗
Thank you so much - great to hear! Enjoy your binge watch!
I like that lightbox trick, very handy! I'm wondering how you keep the plastic on your table from sliding around. I've bought some and I'm having to tape around the edges to keep is from moving.
Great tips Ruth -- I'm not a 'printer' but love using a gel plate and these tips will transfer -- thanks! ❤
I'd say gel plate IS printing- but I have a pretty broad definition! The tips will definitely transfer.
Wonderful Mark making ❤❤
Thank you! 😃
LOVE your work! Thank you for sharing so many wonderful ideas and techniques. I am trying to make some of those lovely tissue paper prints. I've tried 2 different kinds of tissue - the carnival wet strength and archival tissue with oil paint and it's not picking up much of the paint. I'm using my hand with lots of pressure and a brayer as well. I even tried adding a little of linseed oil to loosen up the stiffer oil paint - no success. Any suggestions?
Hi Trish, It's usually because there's not enough ink on the surface/plate. Don't be afraid to add quite a bit (maybe more than you're comfortable with). Perhaps try using a piece of thin scrap paper (it could be another piece of tissue) on the back of the paper as you take the print, so that you can really add pressure, without running the risk of ripping the paper.
Hello Ruth, I'll get back to you about the photo transfer. Could you tell me where I can find in your videos the technique to make it? Thank you
Thank you very much Ruth. Very interesting. Can I please ask you what surface are you using as your palette.is it a gelli plate?
Hi Julia- not not a gelli plate, a large piece of perspex plastic (from B&Q). So it's hard, not squishy!
You say ink but what is it oil or what?
Thank you so much for sharing your approach and techniques. Your artwork is beautiful!
Thank you- glad to be of service!
I love these glimpses into other artists studios! Thank you for the tour!
Thanks Ruth, great inspo as always! :)
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Ruth, that was very inspirational!
Glad to be of service!
Hi everyone- thank you for all your thoughtful comments- I thought I'd comment back rather than reply to each one of you. I really struggled with putting this one out there, and felt quite vulnerable doing it. I felt even more vulnerable when it didn't get many views- but it's been really heartening to get so many comments about the subject. I didn't mean to make the video to say how difficult things are, just to show the kind of things that I/we/artists have to think about. I've definitely found it useful seeing all those numbers in front of me though- eye opening and makes it much easier to make decisions about what to do next.
