The 15 year sob story of how I finally got my US green card
When you’re on a visa, it’s more than just the thrill of being in a foreign country… Your “alien-ness” is always in the back of your mind, from small regulations of what you can and cannot do, all the way to feeling constantly chased to make sure you have something else lined up!! In this episode, I recount every single visa type I’ve had over the 15 years I’ve been in the US, from F1, OPT, J1, H1B, to finally… a green card. More miracles? Yes. More struggles? Absolutely yes.
This is not legal advice and just an anecdotal story :)

But in a series of miraculous events, I saw doors after doors open, and coincidences after coincidences align. I truly believe that God paid for my education and that He put me through school. Listen to a part of my ...

The realities of being an Asian woman in STEM from a current N@SA Scientist

We've broken the glass ceiling, but what about the glass cliff? We’ve recruited women to be in STEM, in CEO positions, and in the top of the corporate grind… but have we figured it all out? In this episode, I get personal about my experiences of being an Asian woman in STEM, tell you the realities of the “glass cliff (?? dead end?)”, and how most definitely we do *NOT* have it figured out. 🐻Con...

Have you ever been the resident Korean in a small retirement town of 2700 people in Delaware? Has God ever told you to go do that?! Well, I can’t tell you too much about the Korean part, cuz I’ve only been Korean all my life, but I can tell you about the other “small retirement town” part, cuz... I’ve seen other towns, man. You know those inspirational stories where the person is not that great in the beginning and then later becomes something totally awesome?! That’s not entirely me but I feel like this story is close enough. In this episode, I get personal and tell you about my childhood, bad grades, and how I finally landed as a N@SA scientist in my 30s. Wow, that’s a wild story involving a lot of troubles and even more luck and miracles. Glad it all worked out eventually! My green card story is pretty uneventful, except I almost threw it away since I had no idea what it looked like 😅

    This was very informative, even though I'm not in the academic field I've always wanted to be in it. Do you have a video of how to look for grants and scholarships for Masters & PHD in the US?

      usually STEM degrees have a stipend + tuition waiver in the US, but it really varies by program and university. I have an episode on getting into grad school that covers some of that; note recently many masters programs are not opting for stipends: ua-cam.com/video/2G1HVRTrqKQ/v-deo.htmlsi=aPuB48K0UYrN1OMn

    Good listen! Not exactly sure how the Algo decided to throw this 👏niche👏 of a video into my feed, as I am not near academia and research, but I listened to all, the entirety, of it. You shared a bit of the world from a perspective that, I'm assuming, probably doesn't see as much light on video platforms. The thousands of views will come 😁

    Although I'm not female myself, this is a topic I've been thinking about a lot. While I can't realistically expect my male colleagues to forfeit their privileges, what truly frustrates me is their failure/refusal to acknowledge the existence of those privileges or the conditions that disproportionately affect women 😞 It's undoubtedly a complex and challenging topic

    Cross-country moving can be incredibly stressful and quite expensive. A few years ago, I moved from Texas to Arizona. Although it was a relatively short move, the quotes I got from moving companies were insanely high-some even asked for $10k! I ended up driving a U-Haul truck with my friends, turning it into a road trip, but it’s definitely something I want to avoid by all means in the future 😅

    • @heydrkyra

      THE OG COMMENTER🥹 Honestly I would trust companies that have higher quotes at this point, since these scam companies low ball you to try to do the "bait and switch". But yes I've always found it to be helpful to just use elbow grease and have helpful friends haha

    Wow, what a story! I joined a freight start-up fairly recently, and I’ve learned a lot of bad things about these brokerage companies, like damages during transfer, hidden fees, and not to mention all the scams and theft, which is quite unfortunate for other good, legitimate companies and the entire industry🥲

    Recently, I’ve had many opportunities to talk with Koreans who have immigrated to the US and realized that everyone’s story of how they got here is vastly different, with pretty much no one conforming to the stereotypical Korean migrant image I had. Yours is definitely one of my favorites, and I can’t wait to hear more about it!

    Hey what would be a good way to apply for a post doc/researcher position at JPL? Directly reach out to PIs?

    • @heydrkyra
      @heydrkyra 5 місяців тому

      Yes for postdocs check the open reqs on the JPL career site (www.jpl.jobs), and reaching out to PIs you’re interested in with your CV doesn’t hurt either just to see what funding they have. Applying to the NASA Postdoctoral Fellowship (npp.orau.org) is another option.
