Oil Painting 101 - Fundamental Information for beginners
This is my 3 hour lecture that I gave for the atelier students at ARA Boston. While oil painting can feel overwhelming, it's extremely enjoyable when you know what to use and why.
Things I cover:
- washing brushes
- what is paint?
- safety concerns
- fat over lean/drying time
- where to start
- getting to know your tubed paints
- and more!
You can find this free handout at my Gumroad site:

My preferred materials can be found on my blog at:

Awesome
Thank you so much for posting this video (and all of your videos). Your paintings and talent are inspirational to me. sharing your knowledge and talent that can be otherwise inaccessible to many is so important. I grew up in poverty and without the privilege to even the basic level of knowledge required to start oil painting (no matter how much I craved to put paint to canvas). I wish in another life I could have been a student to learn from skilled people such as yourself. Just wasn't supposed to be I guess. Im starting my journey now, though I know its too late for me really. I hope new generations get everything I didn't have, and you making these videos and posting them here is helping with that. You are amazing.
Big fan of the trekell wipeout tool. Realizing that removing paint can be just as important as applying it was a breakthrough for me.
Thank
Just waiting for that darn coyote!
Thanks so much!
This seems to be a low-key version of what all acrylics do, which is colors drying much darker. I'm not particularly sensitive to small value changes, so I never noticed it with Titanium White, but notice darks drying lighter and benefit from gloss varnishing to bring back richness. I can't tolerate painting with acrylics for many reasons, but value change in the drying process is one of them.
So excellent! Thank you.
Fels Naptha soap works great for cleaning and conditioning brushes!
Have you uploaded this video before? I feel like I’ve seen it before (I don’t know if it was your channel)
Yes, I has it uploaded previously but I wanted to take out the music at the beginning so I reposted
Amazing clarity and thoroughness in this presentation. Thank you @Julie Beck
Michael Harding non absorbent gesso is fantastic to prevent sinking in

Julie, excellent, you have given me so many new ideas for my Still Life paintings. BTW excellent choice in music and I think the answer is 21?😝👏👍😃☮️
i love artists
Yoooo that’s so cool
This is incredible! Don’t stop the great work!!!
How long do you let the painting dry for inbetween sessions and layers?
Depends on the paint I used And if I added medium or not
@@JulieBeck Makes sense! Thank you for the reply and the amazing videos/artwork!
It's super nice seeing the working hours put in as well, gives a great understanding of how long it actually takes!
Bet you can't hide a double helix in your painting
This is bullshit
Who shat in your cereal?
Lol wut?
It took me until the last quarter of the video to figure out you weren't just painting on an already printed card pinned to an actual wall! 😮
Same 😂
One of the best Sight-Size technique explanation I've ever had. Thank you!

Where can i buy lead white, online?
Awesome!
How many hours did this painting take? I’m just starting to play with oils. I’ll start small, but curious about drying between layers. Do you work on more than one painting at a time? Thanks for sharing your work 🤗
Love the music too!
Found you today. Beautiful work, great presentation too 🤗
that ship looks awesome!
I'm wondering why you used dry brushing on the background? I take it this was a conscious choice.. :)
i wanted a semi transparent scrubbing application for the background, since it's not a perfectly smooth background
@@JulieBeck Ah I see. Thanks for explaining.
Your videos are so inspiring, thank you for posting them Julie
I'm so happy to see you varnish as intende. Not just soak the entire piece with Gamvar, and call it a day 😂❤
You Rock!
Very helpful
Julie, thanks for the tip regarding using different color Imprimatur. I have always used Burnt Umber or Yellow Ochre. However, your Video demonstration has given me the confidence to try some different color Imprimatur washes. Thanks, cheers Eh👏👍😃
