Timex Sinclair Online User Group Meeting November 4, 2024
Hugo Pinto shared his experience with the Load ZX Spectrum Museum's recent recovery of the Tenet educational network system. He explained that the museum interviewed former Timex engineers and created a documentary video about Tenet.
Hugo demonstrated the functionality of the Tenet system. He showed how to send messages between computers, reset a student computer, load software, and save files onto the network. He also explained the limitations of the system, such as the maximum network size and the round trip polling method used for communication.
The team discussed the upcoming Pico update, with Ricardo working on new features and Ryan developing a menu system for the Pico. David mentioned that the Pico update will require a new manual due to the extensive improvements.
Stewart updated the group on an Arduinio shield that connects to the Timex/Sinclair 2040 printer. The board is available from his website, whattocallit.com.

Timex Sinclair Online User Group Meeting Sept 4, 2023
I believe the Timex Sinclair (newly built could be a 5 grade or higher starting point for learning computers), although I would hope that the rebuilt versions would process much faster than the originals.
That's a good point. The Raspberry Pi and BBC Microbit are/were supposed to fill that need.
Super Awesome! It is too bad that never had a chance to take off...
How about TSPico as a file server instead FDD3000 for TENET?
My thought exactly :)
Great video! I’m blown away with TENET! Just imagine if we could have it implemented with internet connectivity as a carrier and connect the whole group together and send files or just experiment with it… I’m glad that it was not lost and thanks to the folks that brought it back to life after 40 years - what a trip!
Yes! I'm looking forward to when we have hardware.
Looks like a fun Meet up, thanks for sharing.
hope to see you guys at a meet up Great group
1:03 the Unipolbrit with the enchanted keyboard and Unipolbrit Floppy -> OMG - I’ve been wanting to see these for ages as back in Poland I owned One but with regular keys. This is amazing, what a collection too! Congrats!!!
The ZX Kilo looks great! Having so much space in the case it would be a great idea to fit a battery and even a LCD could be mounted on top as well!
Its weird watching oneself and hearing one's self...
Thank you all! I love this videos !
Awesome trip!
TS 1500 case also have a modulator out socket cutout in different spot than ZX Spectrum case…
Wow, that music is a bit torturous.
@@rager1969 You’re welcome!
Timex Head Quarters - Middlebury UPDATE as of 07/24/2024 Timex signed a lease to move to Shelton CT and the move should be happening later this year.
0:31:02 Does Gustavo's emulator cover the new Pico boards? Is there any possibility that it will be released?
1:37:40 Don Superfo made the Xberry Pi which isn't a Raspberry Pi, but has the same small footprint. As such it lacks the edge connector that the Next has, but is otherwise compatible with the Next-it has the same Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA as the first Kickstarter Next.
1:36:02 From what I understand is that Alvin Albrecht is Allen Albright and has written the firmware for the Next (after Victor Trucco had a bit of a nervous breakdown). I think he's from Canada.
Other notable museums are the HomeComputerMuseum in Helmond, Netherlands; Load ZX in Portugal and RMC The Cave in the UK
2:03:30 🖐🏼😁
@Carl you can still get a gray keyboard mat. And I think the TS2000 is gun metal gray 😁 My Czerweny CZ2000 isn't shielded and has a PAL modulator, thus with the hole at the right side (if seen from the back)! Unlike my Chilean NTSC Spectrum! Sadly I can't link to my website but you know where to find it.
The EightyOne (EO) emulator used to ship with 3 16k ROM cartridge images. I happen to have Flight Simulator and Paul Farrow, who currently maintains the emulator, helped me dump it for EO and thus it was included since (I think it was version 1.39). That's my small contribution to the community 🥸 PS does anyone has _79002 - States and Capitals_ for sale?

We in the UK are impressed with the TS-Pico and the PicoVideo 🙂And yes Tim, I am still using my QLs.
It is easier to hear the "computer voice" if you watch at faster speed...
nice!! if i apply bright to black this interface can display black with and without bright? thanks!
Yes, it'll do the Timex black/bright black.
@@timexsinclairfans WOOOOOOOOOOOAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THANKS!!
bro stole my whole flow
I wanted to ask Timothy Swenson how to get a QL with the 'normal' sockets, but when I looked on ebay the next day I found one and added it to my collection. Another machine off my bucket list! 😊
Have there ever been 2068 games that used the AY sound chip? As far as I know, they only used the beeper (maybe because most programs were Spectrum ports?)
Titles from Timex? No, I don't believe so. John Coffey's Diamond Mike uses' the AY www.timexsinclair.com/product/diamond-mike/
22:46 There is a little Easter egg in EightyOne! If you go to the hardware selection, the text would say "Colour", but if you select the Timex tab (and click on one of the TS machines) it changes to "Color" 😁
I had a 2068. I designed a "GOOS" (graphic oriented operating system) that was intended to be a mimic of Geos. But never got much farther than rewriting the font to have window boundary glyphs. I went into the mess that is hi-res mode and came out a few months later that the 2068 hi res was never going to work. But then I plugged in a 48v wall wart instead of 24v. And that was the end of the 2068. But as far as I know the computer is still sitting in it's original box in a closet at my parents house with the tape collection. The tape collection includes a computer club tape (Fort worth TS2068 user group) I checked out and never returned. If I have it, it had some 30ish (and my memory is very fuzzy on this, could be as few as 10ish) programs on it. Also present might be the TS1000 (which worked when abandoned) that included only flight simulator and programs I wrote, which included if I remember right an attempt to redo 'strek' from VMS (star trek tic tac toe game) into a 3d program.... ie you still had to do the math, but screen included the 1701 view screen and the reward was the ship rotated and shot at the klingons. It was never finished, but i did have the shoot and explosion. But maybe the tape died. I've got no time or more than a passing interest to get into fixing or finishing my work on these. I am interested in sending the computer club tape to someone with the skill and interest in looking at it and archiving anything not already available. the other stuff, Id have to discuss with my brother.... I never gave him that stuff, but he inherited the room where the boxes were still stored a decade or so ago, so ownership isn't exactly clear, and he is a computer geek just like me.
Will this work with 2048 machines?
Not yet: the 2048 needs a twister. It's on the "to do" list, however.
Bof ! ça amuse ! même pas les enfants !! voilà voilà
Wow!
You can try adding low capacity capacitors to those lights to remove the clicking
?
I find I rarely turn on my TS2068 any more. I use EightyOne emulator on a WIN10 laptop. The only thing I would like, to do, I would buy a used non-working TS2068 and make a USB interface to the old keyboard so the emulator could be used with a Real TS2068 keyboard. But I can get by without that. Well, an easy way to cut/paste into and out of the emulator. As much as i love coding my old TS2068 I don't see getting a TS2068E. Sorry, followed the Next from the beginning and I just don't have any emotional attachment to it.
Just get some cheap used chrombooks and put Spectacol on them...
Video with a very good content. I bought the book Dave mentioned here and it's actually really good. Thanks for the tip Dave.
Just a note: in early 80 there was an embargo on computers and IC chips in Soviet controlled countries so all Sinclair machines were brought in privately. Timex was first company selling computers in the Poland (Składnica Harcerska store) after PEWEX store which had Atari and Commodore machines but only dealt in US currency. Edit: Befote Unipolbrit 2086 (Timex 2068) Poland got Timex 2048 and this is what I’m referring to
46:00 I'm "this guy" who was aided by Paul Farrow with dumping Flight Simulator. It's a 16k cartridge, not 8k. (EightyOne initially assumed they all were 8k carts) I'm still missing States and Capitals 😉😉😉
Do you guys have Speccies or even a Next? Or are you sticking to your 2068's?
There are a fair number of us who have Nexts, from both Kickstarters. But most of us are fairly dedicated to the 2068.
2068 for ever.
I agree, we need replacement cases for 2068 and 2048 and fit them with Dave keyboards and eventually get a FPGA motherboard replacement!! Edit: and for 2068 the cartridge flap could be replaceable with Numeric Pad?
I think a free flowing participation is more in the spirit of an inclusive user group setting instead of planning to silence everyone and making them type in their questions.
TIMEX 2048 NTSC version was sold in South America indeed!!! just for the Chilean market, I have "mine" (my wife's childhood first computer) that I recently fixed for her. ua-cam.com/video/_eEHZM-0C1Y/v-deo.htmlsi=9C-VrfIp-xBk2cuL
You guys are great! More of everything please: programming, hardware, history of Timex, interviews - these guys are not getting any younger … you guys are doing an excellent job preserving Timex-Sinclair history and having very limited free time to get personally involved in the meetings I enjoy these very much so thank you!!!
I always thought that the printer was based on the Epson MX-80 F/T, but that was just the smokey brown top cover shape. Wording on the Gary Grimes drawing looks like it says Transformer for BEU/TS 2000 system A Would eliminate the need for a power strip B Would eliminate the need for a transformer for each peripheral C Would make it possible to turn off the complete system with a single convenient power switch 1 Power supply fits into space at the middle back of ???? It would protrude outside the base unit of the BEU so as to not cut into the PCBs inside BEU 2 Power switch on power supply 3 ???? ???? is to make it convenient to be activated from front of BEU 4 Could be docked with other manufacture systems 5 Power indicator LED
It looks similar to Zx spectrum +2e/+3e rom. Great achievement for 2068!
Have been a TS-2068 user around 40 years ago I have mixed feelings about this.
