I think they grew up in a family where they had to severely compete against each other for attention from their parents. They figured out that the best way to get and extend parental attention was to unnecessarily complicate subjects. I've seen few people who are so desperate for attention that they have to drone on and on and on about even the least important details of any subject. They remind me of Terrence McKenna. He developed his need to talk and talk endlessly even while often proudly contradicting himself bc he group up in a family with very opinionated adults to whom he had to strongly defend his opinions to avoid being pounced upon.
