Are women breaking through the glass ceiling only to find themselves teetering on a glass cliff? Women are often thrust into precarious positions during times of crisis. Is it a setup for failure or an opportunity to shine? It just happened with Boeing, whose CEO, David Calhoun, stepped down amidst its many airplane issues, lawsuits and whistleblowers, only to be replaced by Stephanie Pope. The...

From a human comfort perspective I really hope this doesn’t work as well as opioids. 50-60 years from now I don’t want to potentially be old and dying, stuck in a hospital bed with organ failure and I have to be completely sober the whole time… Like im fkin dying let me pop a couple percs to help tune out the hospital noise like babies crying, children running through the hallways and old people grunting and gasping. If I’m going to run the risk of opioid addiction I’d prefer being in the last 5-10 years of my life dependent on medically prescribed pills in a controlled medical environment.

This isn’t really a question of science and more of philosophy. I believe Socrates will be able to settle this better than either of us: **Scene: Socrates and Meno’s Son Discuss Athletes** The setting is a shaded portico in Athens. Socrates, ever engaged in conversation, meets the young son of Meno, a spirited admirer of athletic contests. Their talk turns unexpectedly to the nature of Formula 1 drivers, and whether such men, piloting their machines in high-speed competitions, might be regarded as athletes. **Socrates**: My dear young friend, it is said that you admire the feats of speed and daring that men achieve in your so-called Formula 1 races. Tell me, do you consider these drivers to be athletes, in the same manner as our wrestlers or runners? **Meno's Son**: Socrates, I do indeed! For is it not obvious? These men train rigorously, exert themselves at the highest level, and their bodies endure great trials. Surely, anyone who competes under such conditions must be called an athlete. **Socrates**: Ah, I see that you are quite convinced of this. But, as I am one who knows little, I must ask: What is this thing, the "athlete," that you speak of? For if we can determine its true nature, we may better judge whether these drivers belong in that category. **Meno's Son**: Socrates, an athlete is someone who performs physical feats at an extraordinary level, training his body to the utmost for the sake of competition and victory. **Socrates**: I understand. Then, according to you, an athlete must engage in physical exertion, training his body and competing against others in pursuit of victory. But tell me this: Do you say that a man who plays a flute beautifully, or who paints a grand mural, is also an athlete? For such men, too, train their bodies- their hands, their arms- and compete with others for glory and prizes. Are they also athletes? **Meno's Son**: No, Socrates! Such men are artisans, not athletes. Their competitions concern the skills of the mind and the hand, not the body’s endurance and strength. **Socrates**: I see. So you would say that the training of the hands, or the refinement of skill, is not sufficient to make one an athlete. It must be, as you said, feats of endurance and strength? **Meno's Son**: Precisely. **Socrates**: Let us return then to our Formula 1 driver. Tell me, what is it that these men do in their contests? Do they run, wrestle, or lift great weights, as athletes in the Olympics do? **Meno's Son**: They do none of these things, Socrates, but they must control their vehicles, racing at speeds faster than any man could run. It requires immense concentration, lightning reflexes, and great physical endurance to withstand the forces acting upon their bodies as they turn and accelerate. They sweat, their hearts race- it is indeed a physical ordeal! **Socrates**: An ordeal, you say? And yet, you do not call a man who endures a long sea voyage, being tossed about by the waves and struggling to keep his ship straight in a storm, an athlete, do you? **Meno's Son**: No, of course not! The sailor endures hardship, but his task is not for the sake of competition. **Socrates**: Ah, so competition is necessary for one to be an athlete? **Meno's Son**: Yes, Socrates. **Socrates**: But not any competition, it seems. For the competition of the flute player or the painter, though it may involve skill and training, does not suffice. The competition must also involve great physical exertion? **Meno's Son**: Exactly. **Socrates**: Very well, then. But answer me this: When the driver competes, is it his body that moves the car, or is it the machine that moves? For when the runner runs, it is surely his own legs that propel him forward, and when the wrestler grapples, it is his own strength that throws his opponent. But what of the driver? **Meno's Son**: It is true, Socrates, that the car moves by its own power, but the driver must control it with great precision and physical effort. He cannot merely sit still and allow the car to drive itself. **Socrates**: So you agree that the car, rather than the driver’s body, is what accomplishes the movement. Then perhaps we might say that the driver, though skilled in the use of his machine, is more akin to the archer, who competes not with his body alone but with the aid of an instrument? **Meno's Son**: I suppose there is some similarity in that, Socrates, though the archer still uses his own strength to draw the bow. **Socrates**: Quite so! And does the archer, then, rely on physical exertion alone to win, or does his victory depend also on the precision of his aim and his quickness of sight? **Meno's Son**: His skill with the bow and his sight are more important than his physical strength, I think. **Socrates**: And would you call the archer an athlete, or a marksman? **Meno's Son**: A marksman, of course. **Socrates**: Then perhaps the driver is also such- a man who competes by skill and precision rather than by the strength of his body. Tell me, would you say that the driver could win his race by physical strength alone, if he lacked the skill to guide his machine? **Meno's Son**: No, Socrates, skill is far more important. **Socrates**: Then, my friend, if the driver relies on skill and precision more than physical strength or endurance, how can he be called an athlete? Should we not, like the archer, call him something else? **Meno's Son**: I see your point, Socrates. Yet it still seems to me that the endurance required of a driver, the physical toll taken by the race, must count for something. **Socrates**: Indeed, there is a certain physical trial involved. But tell me, if a philosopher sits long hours in thought, struggling with great problems, and grows weary from his task, would you say that he becomes an athlete by enduring that hardship? **Meno's Son**: No, Socrates, I would not. **Socrates**: Then perhaps it is not endurance alone that makes an athlete, but the nature of the exertion itself. And if it is not the driver’s body that races, but his skill in guiding the machine, then perhaps we should call him a competitor of skill, rather than a true athlete. **Meno's Son**: I must admit, Socrates, you have confused me once more. But I think I see what you mean- perhaps the driver is not quite an athlete after all. **Socrates**: Let us continue to question, my friend, and perhaps together we shall arrive at the truth. (They depart, still deep in conversation, as the Athenian sun sets beyond the portico.)

Love any video teaching people about interstates! Some corrections though, both 610 and 410 in Texas are loops that circle a I-10 (a horizontal freeway), so this logic for this doesn't need to be a vertical or odd freeway. Also, the 15 doesn't split in San Diego, or anywhere, the image shown is just an exit sign from the 10 in LA.

    • @johnlabus7359

That was a big error showing I-10 as a split. That's just a directional guide for the exits. Every place has those. The best example of a split is I-35 in Texas splitting into I-35 W and E to accommodate the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex.
