A visit with Jack Mullin, who brought perfected tape recording to America.
Jack lets us hear the first Bing Crosby radio show recorded on tape, played on the machine that recorded it in 1947.

Original nitrate soundtrack reel I found in the projection room of Harold Lloyd's home theater (really!). Probably from a studio trash bin and brought in by the projectionist for testing sound.

Olympics Opening Finale 1984 Los Angeles
I was there, aged 9. I still have the plastic sheet that was under the seats for the audience participation bit at 1:20:00.
Thank you for uploading this, great memories of the best Olympics opening ceremony in my life time followed by London's in 2012!
I just recognized the music they are playing: it is from the Battle of Britain movie and was actually supposed to be celebrating the Luftwaffe
Richard, thanks so much for posting this! I had posted our family's old VHS recording of the band portion a few years ago, but the video and audio quality was not great. Not only is the sound great here, and the video the best I've seen so far, I LOVE that it shows the performance without commentary or commercials - just like those in the stadium would have taken in the show. I was one of the Sousaphone players in the band, having just graduated from USC that Spring. Great memories!
I cant wait for the next olympiad!!! LA 2028
Hardly anyone put their hand over the heart except President Reagan in those days.. and I still don't
I was a volunteer on the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 1984 Olympics. I remember putting out alot of those poles and sandbags on the field for the those ballons. I was in the basketball arena behind the Stadium as that was the staging areas for the competitors, performers and TV crew. 40 years have gone by but I've never forgotten that summer. What a privilege that God gave to me. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.❤
@camellahayes7092 I remember it ALL 2 well. I remember how we got there 4 hours b4 showtime holding down those heavy balloons with those bags. I remember it was an Indian Summer and how the Sun was directly on us and of course we were alphabetical so I was near the front 4 my last name begins with a B. I remember our uniform top was a long sleeved Hoodia with stars and arrows on each side. They wanted us ALL 2b great Ambassadors 4 the visitors, spectators, TV. And mostly 4 the athletes. We were told 2b and set a good example. Recently, my Mom said I received a letter from the UNITED STATES OLYMPIC ORGANIXING COMMITTEE asking if I would be interested in coming back 4 the next Olympics 2b held in L A. This time as a spectator...duh, of course, I said YES. Ironically I m in Paris 4 the current Olympics 4 I work 4 a performer. I used 2 live here in Paris, therefore I know it well. West Hollywood, CA. IS my home. So many great memories and now new ones wrapped with new friendships. Life has been a trip...well worth it ALL.
So much better than a lot of that garbage in Paris
It's been 40 years since the 1984 Summer Olympics began.
As I watch this, it is 40 years to the day (7/28/24) that these ceremonies took place. I didn't get to watch them live as I was in Basic Training at Fort Sill, OK at the time.
Bananas - A Film, without audio 😄🍌. Good clip, thank you for posting. Love these interviews from the past, especially the fashion 😍
Who is here after paris 2024??
Yeah it's very disgrace in word of Donald trump It's very woke too I may think 2021 worse but I understand that it was COVID Period but Tokyo is better than paris But I say this 1984 better than anyone else
Anyone here after Paris to regrow brain cells?

Sometimes things that happen in our lives aren't our fault at all.
Probably my favorite memory, all those rehearsals in the week culminating in the Olympic Band performance for opening and closing ceremonies.
So much fantastic recording history. I hope all that equipment has been preserved.
After his death, I heard that his collection went to--I think--Minnesota, perhaps because of his career with 3M.
4:10 Notice the Handel reverse painted lamp with original acorn pulls there on the table…..
Enjoyed a blast from the past. Thanks Richard Lyn L
This is awesome! Thank you for sharing.
7:23 from Los Angeles, California. ABC sports proudly presents the opening ceremony of the games of the 23rd Olympiad.
I was part of the 1984 Olympic Drill team. They auditioned Cheerleaders, drill teams, tumblers, etc in the end what an amazing experience. I still have my origram and uniform. So many great memories.
Did Gaylord Carter played Underworldly Concerto (Grim Grinning Ghosts)?
Gaylord only played the music for the Haunted Mansion scene of the ghosts dancing. He received a $150 check from Disney every few years to renew the contract.
@@steamboatism Alr, thanks for the attention
The Jet Pack was Awesome
Does anyone know the name of the music playing when the Australian team is introduced? Around 1 hour and 34 minutes into this video.
Man what a sound! So rich and full. The e bay has some great ones this week. A 1966 custom 3 manual theater organ for practically nothing! And a very very rare Estey Grand Minuet with colored Theater tabs!
🫶🏼 Memorable entry of the representatives of Mexico 🇲🇽, with the exquisite musical detail 🎼🎺🎻🥁🎶 of "La march de Zacatecas", composed in 1892 by Genaro Codina.

Who y'all think will be lighting the torch in '28? Im assuming it's going to be a woman since all the previous have been men. Maybe the 96 gymnastics team?
I was there. Incredible.
I remember watching this live and cheering Romania from home!
I think I know where Los Angeles belongs in 2032 - 100 Years after the first Olympics. Give it some Thought USA.

Television coverage to Japan was carried out by the Intelsat Pacific satellite. The line was disconnected twice. This was not uncommon for television space broadcasts of the Olympic Games in the 20th century. In Japan at the time, it was called "space broadcast" instead of "satellite broadcast," and the announcer said, "It costs money! Watch carefully!"
Gaylord played a concert in Toronto in the 60's on a Conn theatre organ with dozens of speakers and amps. He didn't have to apologize for the setup. He could make great music on a slide whistle if that's what was available. A true musician!
When Harold Lloyd says that if his car is damaged, he'll sue for $10,000: that amount in 1920 would equal $155,163 in 2024 money. That was quite a high-class automobile!
Wow, I’ve been looking for the past few decades for a clean feed of the opening ceremonies. I was in the parade of nations for Switzerland and didn’t see much of Switzerland in the US broadcast. In this version, I saw Switzerland numerous times and myself two times! Thank you so much for this video. It brings back a flood of memories! I hope one day ABC uses the original tapes to create a full video but this one is invaluable.
Seriously love those sweaters.
What did that "world opening ceremony" mean? Did the organizers think this was for the World Series ( which ISNT a worldwide competition!)?!? Its the Olympics, you American nitwits!
Yugoslavia,Romania and China didn't Boyscott the Olympic
29:14 I’m Romanian but the moment where the people were applauding the Romanian delegate has a pertinent reason: during the communist period, the socialist nations from Eastern Europe has boycotted the OG 1984, as a response of US’ boycott from OG in 1980. And of course, Romania hasn’t accepted this thing 😊, and we have participated
México 😍
10 years old back then…Thank you for sharing this.. I can now look at this in a whole different perspective. America and its love of Bands!!! This ceremony is absolutely beautiful.
No es America, es Estados Unidos, America es un continente
My late father captured about 5 minutes of the event on VHS ("Fame" and "Beat It" segments - technically he recorded longer period but unfortunately it been overwritten so that what I got). I was captivated by it and spent laterally over 20 years curious about what was the ceremony! Thank you for sharing it; it really means a lot! :D

Always a pleasure to hear the dear departed Gaylord Carter! You are missed! I was honored to be in attendance in his home several times for parties or AGO-Long Beach events. You are still the master of the theater organist!🎹
A broadcast without background chatter proves that host-less TV coverage is perfectly fine or even preferable. Vids of this same event with commentators of the past, Jim McKay (a sportscaster who died in 2008) & Peter Jennings (a newscaster who died in 2005), show their need to gab ruined the presentation. When sportscasters & newscasters are given big dollars, they feel a need to show they're being paid by the word. The opening number "Welcome" was crapped on by the hosts' voiceovers & portions of the ceremony were either omitted (for required commercial breaks---at least understandable) or replaced by talking heads, which are often as much a snooze as what they elbow out.
Totally agree. Having grown up with Jim McKay being "Mr Olympics", I always looked forward to these moments but, in retrospect, I now realize that he would get super amped that he was like an excitable young kid who can't keep quiet. So glad that many of the ceremonies posted here and on the Olympic channel website are announcer-free.
Its not the Olympic games of Los Angeles (1:06:25) - its the 1984 World Olympics held in Los Angeles.
The proscribed words of the International Olympic Committee, which go back decades, are exactly the way that Reagan read them. However, he flipped the ending part of the paragraph to make its predicate stronger. The conventional format is: "I declare open the Olympics games of [name of host city], celebrating the [either 'st, 'nd, 'rd, 'th] Olympiad of the modern era."
