HOLY RUST HOLE!! Fixing a rust hole the right way! PART 2
After discovering a section of Bondo covering rust on my '97 Jeep TJ, I ended up cutting out the section of rust and repairing it the right way. In this video I do the body work, and a little post follow up. To see the start of this repair check out my previous video here: ua-cam.com/video/3yrdJOxTpGs/v-deo.html

Thank you so much for making this video. I can make it to work tomorrow. I fucking appreciate you dude
Keep up the good work Bro 😊😊😊
Thank you for posting your video. I am not mechanically inclined, however I followed your easy to follow clear steps and instructions and saved $600 dollars I don’t have. Praying blessings over your life and everyone you love, in Jesus name! Amen!
Saved my ass! And yeah, I’ll get a new cylinder too. But driving thanks to you guys! ❤
Thank you!!! Saved me from a big headache!!!😊
Did the trick! Thanks
This literally just saved me! No warning and my ignition crapped out today. Thank you so much!!!!
Takes about 30 minutes to complete. Saved my butt. Thank you
When it comes to the first roll pin, Will that method work if the wheel is locked?
Thanks for making this
My pleasure!
I've watched 4 of these different videos so far and your is by far the best one of them all. I really had my doubts when it came to taking the push pin out of the cylinder. It looked to me like "yeah right" that will work. But I was wrong, very wrong. I didn't have my screwdriver exactly in the same place as you I had mine down just a bit and used mostly the cylinder itself. But the pushing and taping and it poped right out. Nice job,
Literally worked exactly like described. Got me out of a $550 part before labor.
I did all this it started now a/c and radio not working afterwards
You will need the code for the stereo which should be on the glovebox lid or in the owner's manual. Cant speak for the a/c not working... 🤷♂️
Thanks for this great video. I was able to help out one of the waitresses at my favourite restaurant and got major brownie points with the staff 😆. She had a few people try and help her and was about to have it towed to the dealer. One little thing, I believe the spring goes on top of the steering lock lever, not underneath it.
That is awesome!
Heads up guys, as already noted, the first roll pin ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT COME OUT as easily as vid shows. Can't comment on the rest. Been stuck at pin removal for 3 hours
I ended up filing down the end of an old chainsaw file till I could tap it inside the roll pin and then I was able to gently wiggle the pin out.
Yeah, it took a bit of frustration, just the right angle and force prying, and beating the h*ll out of the ignition to get it fall enough to grab with needle nose pliers the first time... I've had to do this twice since 🤦♂️
So for people that can’t fix it themselves. How much would it cost at the dealership for them to fix it?
At the stealership, ~CAD$400 if they only repair the tumbler, nearly CAD$1000 if they have to replace the whole assembly.
YOU THE MAN!!!! This must happen often, small town Alaska O’Reiley’s has the entire steering column lock mechanism for $432. Took about an hour from start to finish! Thanks so much!!
Yep, thanks for the info. Mine had the same problem, but not any more!
Glad it helped‼️
Just wanna thx you man you save me a towing and like a day lost of work. I just did remove the key assembly and bring it to a keymaker, voila. No towing no hassle, i even could remove the broken car in the winter driveway to every one in the family get to work tomorow morning 🙏👌
thanks a million buddy car was stuck sideways in front of the garage. wife couldn't pull in. the procedure went just the way you filmed it(except when some tumblers fell out which you warned) back in biz thanks again man
So do I need to buy a complete cylinder from Honda or no? Sorry I'm in the middle of this right now
Not necessarily. You can buy a kit of replacement wafers to replace the worn ones and renew your existing cylinder 😁
@@tradingland4water827 thx
Great video! I have been working on this today. I’m wondering, did you put the roll pin back in before you put the ignition back into its original place. I’m at this point, everything is working, but I’m nervous putting everything back in, without the roll pin in. Please let me know. Thank you, Bronson
Sorry for the delayed response, I've been disconnected for a bit. Yes, absolutely have to put the roll pin back in after reassembly 🙂 Hope you got it worked out
Thank you. Wife was afraid to drive the car as sometimes the key wouldn't turn. I bought the core assembly with keys ( $21.00 on Amazon) and moved the chips to the new keys. This video was very helpful with the remove and replace procedures. Key slides right in and turns easily. Happy wife, happy life.
Amen to that 😂
So the one that keeps popping up do we take it out and leave it?
Sorry for the late reply, I've been disconnected the last month. Yes, whichever one is still up with the key in needs to be removed. Hope you got it working 🙂
Thank you for posting this video, it saved me a ton of time
Glad it helped! 👍👍
Thank you! I could move the key just enough that I didn’t have to drill a hole to get the little pin out. I so appreciate this video. I basically have it memorized now I watched it so many times. Hoping this fix will last longer than the car so we don’t have to buy the $400 part.
Thank you so much for this terrific video. Just resolved the problem on a 2003 Element. Had to remove all the tumblers! But it’s rolling again. Great step by step.
Nice detailed video for a PITA problem. Did you try any graphite or lubricant before disassembling the cylinder? It seems like that one tumbler wasn't bent or damaged so why do you think it seized up? I've seen lots of people experiencing the same issue. I'm guessing maybe people in dusty or dirty environments might have a higher probability of having this happening.
I did try graphite first 😁 Upon opening the column I found years old cigarette ashes caked EVERYWHERE 🤦🏼♂️ Also seems like someone used WD-40 and it got gummed up
Plus one on the the assist for this! Followed your directions pretty much to a T and success! We're on the road again. At the 1:50-2:20 mark, I wasn't having much luck. Took a really close look at the pin that holds it in and wiggled it out a little with an awl and a push pin, and it finally came loose. Not quite as forcefully as your video, but she finally came out. Thanks for the vid, saved me a bunch of $ and time!
So glad you were able to get it fixed!!
I can't get my pin out:(
Hey thank you for the great vid! Started to get a sticky tumbler, knew it'd be no fun but better now while I was at home w tools. TIP: set pin didn't budge, no matter the tapping etc. Drilled the hole up to the end of it so I could see what I was doing, then drilled the pin a little with a tiny drill bit- once bit jammed in the pin it pulled out very easily. Also didn't fall/go missing
Very nice 😁 Glad you were able to get it sorted‼️
And I don't CARE IF YOU ARE ALRIGHT WITH Whatever OR WHATEVER YOU THINK MAN FOR REAL SAUL YOU BROKE MY SPIRIT MY HEART AND NOW I HAVE TO FIGHT TO SEE MY OWN CHILDREN FOR REAL YOUR FOWL LIKE FOR REAL
Um, I hope you and Saul can work it out 🤷🏼♂️ Best of luck 🤞
Awesome vid!!!! Thanks for the help!!!
Absolutely‼️ Just happy to know this has helped a few people 😁
So, what if I can't get the key all the way in?
Maybe try some graphite lube, some wiggling and a little brute force? 🤷🏼♂️ Otherwise you may need a replacement cylinder and key. At that point you will need the key programmed or move the coded pill from your key to a new one
@@tradingland4water827 must have broke internally. Thanks for the reply
This was a huge help!!! Thank you!!
You are very welcome‼️
This worked for me. Thank you sooo much! You da man!
Glad you were able to get it fixed‼️
Dam.. so basically your saying I should blow this car up and hope someone sees the smoke to rescue us? 😂
Uh, well, not exactly. 😂 We love our Element‼️
I can’t get the roll pin out and I’m ready to cry. You made it looks so easy! I’ve been whacking away for an hour!
The first time I had to do it was a pain‼️ It was all about varying the pressure of prying while whacking it over and over 🤣🤣
Same 😭 I feel like I'm going insane trying to get the pin out.
The trick for me was to find a very small drill bit that would fit inside the pin hole and pry and pull at the same time to loosen it. Then the tapping finally worked
I'm stuck here too!
@@zackwarren5879 in retrospect a screw extractor tool would probably make it way easier. Good luck
I unlocked my steering wheel adjustment, and jammed the steering whell up and down while turning the key at the same time, it worked! I think it seized up when I turned off the car with the wheel turn all the way to one side.
The best informative video it worked!
I wonder because I had tried spraying some WD-40 in there cuz I did not know what the problem was but I think that doing that has prevented me from being able to get this release pin to vibrate-out like you were able to.
Yeah, WD40 is a great lubricant initially. After a while it attracts dust and turns into a glue like paste‼️ I use PB Blaster instead. Maybe try a very small/micro flat head screwdriver between the pin and housing while thumping on it. Don't be afraid to whack it pretty good too. You won't hurt it 🤣
@@tradingland4water827 WD-40 is what I had in the Element with me at the time. You are of course correct in its description. I found that the pin had in fact worked itself most of the way out but was definitely hung up on something. Fortunately I found a paper clip that I unfolded and it perfectly fit inside the pin. I used a pair of pliers to wiggle it hard while manipulating the key barrel assembly, and the pin came out with the paperclip wire in it preventing it from it just dropping out and getting lost. I then followed the rest of your instructions with great results. Thanks!
im having such trouble after taking the ignition cover off, hammering the keyhole in and prying it but it just wont come out, is there a certain technique you did with this?
Honestly, persistence is key. That and not a lot of pressure prying. The first time I had to do it (second half of video) it didn't pop right out. It wiggled down just enough I was able to grab it with a pair of needle nosed vice grips and pull it out. Was not easy the first time. I wish you the best of luck‼️ 🤞
@@tradingland4water827 I got it this morning after I literally hit it 5 times while prying 🤣🤣 I followed the rest of the video and only came to another problem when some of the tumblers came out but luckily I was able to put it back together. You had the same exact tumbler messed up as I did in the lock so this video was down to the T for me, much appreciated
5 hours of prying, tapping and preying. Never worked. My guess is that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
fixed
Nice!
This is really helpful. I just got stuck in a small town with the same problem, and I'm trying to avoid it in the future. quick question for you: at about 2:40 you mentioned that you had to drill a hole to remove a roll pin. how would you have solved that problem when you were stuck at the chiro? is there another way to remove the roll pin if I'm stuck without a drill?
I had experienced the problem a week prior while at home with all my tools available to me. Without being able to drill a hole I'm not 100% how it could come out 🤷🏼♂️. I know I had to buy a drill and a bunch of other tools one time from a parts store to fix my RV stuck on the side of the highway! Was a whole lot cheaper than the tow bill would have been 💰💰💰
chiro is looking out at the the guy twisting himself into his driver seat floor just shaking his head. So helpful, thank you!
Yeah, he got me on my next visit 💯 🤣🤣
I got stuck 9 hours away from home this would have saved me
Ah man! That's a bummer. Hope you got it all worked out now 👍
So you took out the bad pin, or tumbler but what did you put in its place?
Nothing! Literally just pulled it out, pulled the spring out, and put it back together! Had to do it twice, hence the video split lol 😆
Thankyou for the response. God bless
Can I remove all the wafers and be done with it?
At least one or two will need to stay in other wise the ignition cylinder can free rotate iirc
@@tradingland4water827 thanks. I’ll be doing……attempting this today. The reason I suggest removing all is that this won’t happen again and I am not concerned with and security. Are you saying the tumbler might move when the key is out ( as to leaving at least 2 in there?) Thanks again
@@tradingland4water827 just finished! I owe you a pint good sir. Venmo?
No need my friend, 😎 Happy to have helped!
Thanks for the video!
You're very welcome‼️
@@tradingland4water827 worked like a charm!
Should you disconnect the battery before disconnecting the wires?
Absolutely, always a good idea to remove voltage from the equation ⚡⚡
Wow that first roll pin popped right out allowing the switch to jump right out. That was much easier than drilling a hole. Maybe I just got lucky but thanks for that trick. I lost the roll pin but bought another one. Good video, thanks.
Thanks‼️I know it seems an odd method, but if it works 🤷🏼♂️ Right⁉️
You got lucky
