    Hi if my solenoid is new and has 2 black wires how can you tell Wich one is the common? If it’s facing me is it the left or right side I’m just trying to swap over from a champion solenoid to a lawn genie type

    • @cupchanger
      @cupchanger 8 днів тому

      Since a solenoid is an electro magnet, it doesn’t matter which way you wire them unless it is a battery operated timer. In that case it would need an entirely different solenoid. If your timer plugs into a wall socket or it is hard wired, you can wire the common to either wire and use the leftover wire as the control wire.

  • @Grandvistarealty
    @Grandvistarealty 29 днів тому

    It be nice if they built water values with built in unions. Only issue I suggest. Put union nuts closest to value. I have had a number of nuts Crack in extreme weather. This way you can easily switch out nut side of union with station. Especially in very tie spaces.

    I have 2 different colored wire bundles . White for front yard and black for back yard . I cannot get the rear yard valves to turn on. I am using the white wires from both bundles ( as the common wires ). My Orbit timer has no screws, but has little plastic push tabs that rock or toggle where you can insert the wire up into a hole beneath the little plastic toggles. The wires come loose at times ! I purchased this timer 3 months ago at Home Depot. What do you recommend ? I am using Rainbird valves 3/4 inch .

    • @cupchanger
      @cupchanger Місяць тому

      You can use a short common jumper wire about 3 inches long to connect to the clock, then wire all 3 common wires together with a small wire nut. This will ensure a solid connection. The valves you have chosen are a good choice. If you are still having trouble you will have to troubleshoot with a multimeter. You want to check that you are getting voltage from the controller while the back yard stations are supposed to be running. It is low voltage AC somewhere between 22 and 55 volts. You can also check the ohms through the common wire and each station wire to ensure there isn’t a brake in the line.

    Is this di-electric grease on the grease caps? Also, can I just insert wires inside the grease caps, then twist the wires or can that cause the wires to not work from the copper ends being greased. Or should I just twist the wires before inserting them inside the grease plugs and continue twisting the wires with the grease cap.

  • @markwebb3646
    @markwebb3646 2 місяці тому

    This is improper. Simple easy solution with the same result is to leave your timer on, let it cycle as normal. Water supply has been turned off and water will drain the same as he is intending. In the spring, all you do is turn water on.

    • @cupchanger
      @cupchanger 2 місяці тому

      I would opt for using a slip fix or slip couplings. PVC is flexible enough to bend the pipe upwards and force it together if you are using couplings. You just have to dig back far enough to allow it to bend. The slip fix is easier to use for a first time repair or DIY.

    Best practice is to give a slight turn after pushing if in all the way and then hold it for a few seconds, I'm sure the way you showed would work fine but it's better to spread the sealant so that it's covered evenly when bonding

    • @cupchanger
      @cupchanger 3 місяці тому

      I used to do the same thing until I got PVC weld certified. That is where I learned that twisting is an outdated practice that can weaken the weld by rippling the PVC where it comes in contact with the joint. It won’t make any difference on joints 2 inches and smaller, but it can cause larger pipe welds to fail.

    does it matter which of the red wires from the valves goes to the white common wire, the solenoid has on/off on the top and i assume each of the wires is for that specific function

    • @cupchanger
      @cupchanger 3 місяці тому

      No it doesn’t matter. The solenoid is just an electric magnet that pulls a plunger up out of the valve body, no matter which way it is wired it is still a magnet. The on and off is a directional rotation that accomplices the same action.

    Ratchet cutters are notorious for cracking existing / older PVC and CPVC pipes. Some instead use a pipe / tube cutter with an enclosed metal cutting wheel (generally used for copper pipe), scoring the plastic pipe initially, and then tightening the tool grip several times by turning the cutter handle, after the grip becomes looser with a couple of revolutions of the tool. The pipe cutter with the metal wheel is thought to apply less force on the older pipe and is said to generally give a clean cut.

Just seems to be such a waste of water. Figuring way to reuse water and pump back to plants

    Is 16 AWG "marine wire" good for sprinklers? Wasn't sure if all 16 AWG wire are created equal. Thank you!

    • @cupchanger
      @cupchanger 4 місяці тому

      Most home grade sprinkler wire is 18 gauge single strand wire, so the marine wire is of adequate gauge, but it is likely multi strand. While I can’t give you advice on this specific wire. I have seen home sprinkler timer systems run on all kinds of wire, and they work fine, but it is probably not recommended. The recommended wire to use is direct burial 16-18 gauge for short distances and direct burial 12-14 gauge for most commercial applications.

    so one wire from all valves goes to the common and the other wires get a different wire? does the color matter ?

    • @cupchanger
      @cupchanger 4 місяці тому

      Sorry for the late reply. Yes you are correct, and the color doesn’t matter. Basically for each solenoid you use 1 wire (white) to supply power to all the solenoid, and the other wire is the trigger to turn it on and off.

      For stability and rigidity, it doesn’t have to be plumbed in galvanized pipes, but helps to keep it from getting damaged.

    Can be used only in sprinkler systems depending how many sprinkler heads in each zone loses pressure. After the valve closes, it loses pressure and heads retreat no pressure. Doesn't stress this type of coupling compression. I really don't recommend using the direct line to the house. Definitely will fail in days.
