Will I Figure Out the Puzzle of this Giant Maple Log Using Chainsaws
Check out how I break down this huge, curly maple log with my Stihl 461 and Echo 620p chainsaws! Lots of noodling and ripping logs in this video, I need to preserve the length of cuts so I can make large bowl blanks out of this beautiful wood.

Chainsaws-Stihl 461 Taking on Big Maple

We got the Stihl 461 in some really big silver maple! This saw rips, even bone stock, no mods, contender for GOAT chainsaw. Stihl Chainsaw Shootout, 271 vs 461!

Let's do a chainsaw noodling comparison, MS271 Farmboss vs. MS461 pro saw. The difference is not just in homeowner vs professional saws, but also in engine displacement and horsepower. Yes this test is skewed but there's a reason for it. Stihl dealerships and UA-camrs constantly recommend the 271 but I think it's a junk saw. Sure the Farmboss puts in work in a conventional manner of crosscuttin...

      Next generation of it. I haven't run it personally but should be very similar. Stihl saws goes for example 046, 460, 461, 462. Basically same saw but slight changes each generation, carb tweaks ,weight reduction, etc. I know there was a major air filter change from the 260 to 261 so that might have happened with the 251 also.

    I bought a brand new 2024 Stihl 261 with 20” bar. Mine is the manual carb model, no Mtronic. I wanted to be able to tune the saw if I wanted to. So, anyways. I put an hour meter on it right out of the box, and then I began the break in process. I am using 32:1 mix, and the saw has been Re-tuned on 32:1. After about 1.2 hours the saw started coming to life a little bit better. Stihl actually said full break in can take up to 20 hours on these saws. Anyways, the 261 is a monster. Mine is hitting 11.5K in the cut on 12” pine trees I really like it. I highly recommend it. I want to suggest anyone with a 261, or anyone buying a 261, allow the saw time to break in properly. When mine was brand new brand new, it bogged, and wanted to die in the cut. But that was at 0.0 hours on it. Now it runs completely different! After break-in, these saws are insane. I use a MotoMix fuel that has been converted to 32:1 mix ratio. I add some Honda HP2 oil to my MotoMix. 😂 anyways! I love it!!

    I was an Emergency Service volunteer and we used 251s to cut through Australian gum trees (we had a couple bigger 361s, but not all our vehicles had them). We'd clear fallen trees and branches off roads and peoples houses. Never had any issues with overheat, i used to do all the first line maintenance on them and they held up well, even in 40C + (over 100F) temperatures. Sounds like it's running aliright

    The 271 is a good saw its just not a GREAT saw. And the price you pay is what 400 450? Me personally I dont like it to much... I just feel like if you want a 50cc saw buy a 261. However I LOVE my upgraded MS180. I did the big tooth conversion and did a small muffler mod and it CUTS awesome. NO its not a bucking saw... Its not a Falling saw or a anything serious. But where it shines is Smaller trees with plenty of power and its around 7lbs. If im just cutting up stuff under 10 inches Its great. IF i need more saw i go to 261 at 10lbs if I need MORE 362 or 036 works awesome for mid size trees. And if I need to cut up Dry BIG hard wood 462 with WCS upgrades is a BEAST. Right tool for the job!! I push folks to buy 2 or 3 saws. depending on what they are doing. But a small saw 30cc a mid saw 50 60cc and a Big old 70cc saw will be awesome. There is a HUGE difference from 60cc to 70cc class. 362 vs 462

      @DacaTimberworks. 6 місяців тому

      Yessir, lots of good info there! I absolutely love my little 250, I modded the muffler and put a 3/8lp and 16" bar, absolutely love that little ripper. I rarely use my 271, I wish I would've bought a 261 but I watched a few bad vids recommended it. I picked up a used 620p off marketplace and modded it's muffler and absolutely love that saw. I don't fall trees, I'm just a hobby guy who makes firewood and turning blanks for my lathe. I do as much ripcuts and noodling as I do crosscut for my turning blanks so I need the powersaws. I'd live to get a 881 or 395 one of these days. Thanks for the feedback.

      @@DacaTimberworks. I have run a 395 my buddys saw and its a BEAST. Im NOT a husky fan but that saw is a big deal. 70cc Chain speed with 90cc power. Its a beast. The only draw back is weight its a tank 17lbs vs a 13.9lb 500i. 3lbs you can feel for sure a few OZs isnt enough to matter.

      Hey bud thanks for the interest and watching. The 55gal drum came with the lid and lid ring. The 35gal drum also came with it's lid. I got both of these for free from work. You can find these on Marketplace easily, the 35gal is a bit more of a rare find and is usually used for grease. So possibly hitting up semi or tractor mechanic shops if having trouble on marketplace. I used the steam pressure washer at work to clean them, and an oxy-acetalyne torch at work to cut the air holes. You can use a drill if cutting torch is not available but it's a slow process and you should probably use pilot holes or a stupid up drill bit, ¾" holes should be adequate. Before first use I burned a fire in both barrels to burn away any contamination before use. The chimney is 5" HVAC ducting I got from Lowes, it's actually sold in sheets that you have to bend into a cylinder and it snaps shut. It's kind of a pain and difficult bit there are videos out there for how to do it easily. I used it because it's dirt cheap. The only other things I used was a few papers for weight that I also got at Lowe's in the garden section.

I too find myself turning without a face shield on occasion, usually I've removed it to look at detail or to have some coffee and forget to replace it, a good reminder that a good smack in the face is offensive, especially if you've done it yourself ! My 2 cents: the shape was a bad match for the shape of the buttons - they could not grip the rim area effectively, and only the tailstock prevented the flyoff at first. Another point may be the direction and depth of the final cut without the tailstock. It appears that as the chisel was going from the outer edge towards the center that the chisel pried the bowl away from the buttons. It might have been better if the cut was much lighter, and/or from the center outwards where the chisel is pushing more towards the headstock. So far as the shape change goes, perhaps the bowl was drying as you turned it, from the friction of the chisel as it cut.

    • @DacaTimberworks.
      @DacaTimberworks. 7 місяців тому

      Thanks buddy for the 2 cents!🤣 I totally agree the tailstock saved me from earlier on. I normally try and do all major material removing in the cole jaws directly into the headstock, like I did with the bulk of the tenon. The cut that popped the bowl loose was as fine and small as I could take, I honestly think the bowl would have flown out even without a tools touch. Just flat out bad decision making and I accept the responsibility for it. I'm just thankful it was a needed wake up call with little consequences. Thanks for the input!

    Just a few thoughts. Some pieces of wood can have different densities within them so they won't spin smoothly no matter what you do. Another thing is to check the chuck regularly because the jaws will loosen at times. A faceshield would deflect the blow of the bowl if it does come loose contrary to what you think. I have the same bumpers on my cole jaws and use them in expansion mode as well as compression. How long have you been turning?

    • @DacaTimberworks.
      @DacaTimberworks. 7 місяців тому

      I've been turning almost a year now. Yeah so this was quartersawn and half was sapwood and the other heartwood. This could relate to the different density like you mentioned. A turner friend from Facebook had mentioned me using those types of bumpers for expansion on a closed form also. To be honest I was quite embarrassed that though had never crossed my mind. I've watched the replay over 100x now through editing 3 different videos, the short shows it the best. I think the tool rest absorbed and slowed the velocity quite a bit. I know the shield would have deflected and I'm wearing it way way more often now, I was dismissing it only because I got a tiny bump on the inside of my lip. Extremely lucky I know, but it was enough to wake up and get out of the complacency I had fallen into. Thanks so much for your advice and taking the time to reach out to me buddy!

      Wow friend I'm truly honored! Unfortunately I turned it green and extra thick, right now 3 weeks after the turning its developing a hairline crack. I don't want to use CA glue and discolor it so I'm applying a few coats of tung oil to slow it down. It also has two Knicks on it, I'd like to say from when it hit me🤣 but it was from when it bounced off the lathe. I can try and get some close up pics of these so you can see. I will also research shipping today and try and get everything down as low as possible. Stay in contact and thanks for your support I'm truly thankful Jere!

    Couple of observations from the video. You had enough wood for 2 3" deep bowls. The worm screw dials you into one profile and prevents you from making changes on the fly. Start you roughing thru profiling between centers. Green wood w/ thick walls, sharp corners/edges lead to cracking. The difficulty you had sheer scraping on the outside is because you were scraping against the grain & causing it to lift up. Proportions: look into Golden Mean = 1.62 × or ÷ the specific profile and then join that curve together. You struggled on the base as it was too big. The Rim diameter looks to 5ish" so the base should be 3" (Rim diameter ÷ 1.62). Glad you were not hurt on the bird wood. You learned to not use cole jaws. A friction fit piece that is turned to match the inside bottom profile is the best way to clean up your bottom , add details, remove the tenon/recess. I can see the growth you made since you started. It's all time on the lathe and learning the little tricks that separate you from the others who are doing the same thing. Dane.

      Thanks so much for this advice Dane, I really do appreciate it. The golden rule make sense, the proportions do look a bit off, especially the base. It's been about 3 weeks now and it's starting to develop a thin crack horizontal, I assume this is because it's QS. I'm also assuming this is what you mean with my shear scraping, the QS is a different orientation that I'm not used to. It has indeed become my passion, hopefully a lifelong one. I spend as much time as I can on my lathe, work likes to get in the way though. Thanks again for taking the time to give me some advice and watching the video!

      @WildWashWoodturning thanks bud, I do appreciate it. I just saw that Nova makes a direct 1¼ thread jumbo spur that you can even remove two of the blades if you want to. I've heard quite a few turners mention two pronged spurs for easier grain alignment, especially on the round live edge side.
