Land Cruiser 79series V6 build | Is the LC79 the ultimate overlanding vehicle?
LandCruiser 79series V6 build | Is this the ultimate overlanding vehicle?
Landcruiser 79series V6 kept very basic. But it works!!
Kitting out a landcruiser 79series to be used as an overlanding rig is so much fun. There are so many gadgets and products available on the market.
They all work in their own way, but fitting all of it at once is nearly impossible.
We have been using our Landcruiser for a while now and tried to keep it very basic. Weight is a massive issue, especially with the double cab as most of your packing space is behind the rear axle. To make matters worse is the fact that we overland with a big Conqueror Companion in tow as well.
Is this the ultimate overlanding vehicle? Perhaps not for everyone, but it works for us. Yes, we are always open to trying different things and newer products, as it makes life easier. Our Landcruiser 79series V6 was kept very basic. But it works!!

Chobe National Park in Botswana. Overlanding with a landcruiser 79series. Elephant Sands
Переглядів 20 тис.2 місяці тому
Overlanding trip to the Chobe national park in our landcruiser 79series. We got bogged more than once in this episode, including once in the Chobe National Park. We start this episode by traversing the very loose sand section between Savuti, Linyanti and Kasane It was on this section where we got bogged the first time, and also where I made up my mind that we need bigger tires. Luckily some fri...

SAVUTI - A wild destination in Botswana that needs no introduction. It houses some of the fiercest predators in Africa. Don’t let their demeanor and laziness deceive you, as this is part of the March pride and they have been known in desperate times to take down elephants. Even though not seen every day, Savuti is also home to the fastest land animal. The cheetah. The elusive Leopard can also b...

We were hit with a burst of excitement as we left the tarred road from Maun towards Khwai, knowing that it was gravel and sand for the next 2 weeks. After a few kilometers, there is a veterinary fence. There are no issues to travel south to north with meat, but none is allowed to be taken down south towards Maun The road was extremely dry and dusty with loose sand all over as there had been no ...

We started off our adventure at Limpopo River Lodge, which laid the foundation for a truly unforgettable trip in the making. Leaving a calm and relaxed campsite behind, we immediately embarked on some not-so-calm roads. We will always take the road less traveled, and this was one of those where a lot of complaining turned into lasting memories and stories around the campfire. We then reached Li...

We are back in Botswana, again. We are constantly asked why we keep on visiting the same places over and over again. The truth is that with each visit, the experience is completely different, and we never get to fully explore the vast areas that Botswana has to offer. This trip was rather different, and it proved to be one of our best-ever trips to the various places that we visited. We started...

In July of 2023, we decided to do something a bit different from our normal bush wild type of camping. So, we visited Dinokeng, Sondela and Mabalingwe Nature Reserve. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision and we still had to pack in the morning, leaving Nelspruit only around 11 and arriving at Tau gate, to enter Dinokeng, just before 4 o clock in the afternoon. This was winter which meant it got...

    DOes it feel safe camping in the reserve, im actually from Botswana just before Maun and the thought of sleeping amongst wild animals just terrifies me,even stopping to take a pee is a taboo for a typical motswana in our area.Anyway beautiful stuff ,still scary though.

      Hi. We also have an additional tank. Helps a lot when touring. And the exhaust makes a massive difference. The only advice I can give is to make sure she is happy. We always have extra water on a warm day so we can give her a “jacuzzi” in a tub in the middle of nowhere. It is always exciting for them to play with water. One month is still very young, at that age we made sure not to drive too far everyday. It will ease the stress on yourself as well. Just advice, definitely do not have a set in stone answer. It will vary per person and per day(as we have found out)

      Caution should be taken at all times. We are currently in Mabuasehube and had leopard in our campsite twice last night. Also spotted hyena continuously. We are in the wild here and should always respect it. I won’t say we are not afraid because that will make us look and seem disrespectful towards what we do, but it does get easier the more you do it, and pre-caution is taken more easily! Thanks for watching

      @@OurLifeInAfrica I'm from Europe (Dutch living in Italy) and one of my dreams is to camp like you do in the wilderness, but honestly I find it difficult to understand when a place is safe and when not. I thought fire would keep cats at a distance but then I read this is a false myth. There are no fences and sometimes there are lots of hiding places next to the campsite, such as trees or high grass. I imagine myself choosing a spot on the campsite, pulling the kitchen out, and a big lioness running towards me!!!😮😮😮 Thanks for answering my question, hopefully one day I will learn how to camp like you do.....

      They are more afraid of you than you are of them.. but some areas they have become very habituated unfortunately. You can watch some of our latest Live videos on facebook. Lions even use our areas as shelter now. Some companies offer guided tours where you can camp within a group in these areas. That might be an option for you

    Hey Martin, Thank you for sharing. We also have the Old Man Emu suspension with a constant 600kg load rating. Works well. When it is time to replace, I am considering the Terrain Tamer... Out of interest sake- How many kilometers did the shocks last? I see you upgraded to 35" tyres. Did this affect your fuel consumption much? Is it easier to tow the caravan with the bigger tyres? Your 240Ah DIY LiFePo4 battery - NICE :-)

    • @OurLifeInAfrica
      @OurLifeInAfrica 2 місяці тому

      Hi. The shocks only have around 65k km on it when we took this video. 😮 We are seriously considering upgrading to toughdog, but terraintamer is also still a choice. There are actually quite a few good ones on the market now. We will upgrade the complete suspension and not only the shocks. The tires made a massive difference. Fuel consumption is about the same. Pulling away we can feel the power is less, but when on the open road, it is much smoother. Towing the companion is also much nicer and at cruising speed it is way more comfortable. It could be the softer compound tires. Should have done it a long time ago. Thanks again for watching.

    Hi! What is the brand of the Pod you use to fix your camera at the car? Many of these pods are just available with suction cups but this one seems to be a very stable combination of a fixed pod with just one cup….

    • @OurLifeInAfrica
      @OurLifeInAfrica 2 місяці тому

      Hi. What pod are you referring to? For the camera we use to take video from the vehicle, we either use an oversized beanbag or on occasion the gimpro doormount. Inside the vehicle the gopro is mounted using the original gopro suction cup, and all the rest of the mounts are ram mounts.

    • @markuskurbes4048
      @markuskurbes4048 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for your response! What i meant was the gimpro door mount. Looks very stable compared to most of the door mounts i have ever found! I wouldn‘t rely just on suction cups for an external car mount…

      We have never had issues. I only fill it with 19litres so that it is not completely full though.

    Deflate tyres to min 0,8Bar

    • @OurLifeInAfrica
      @OurLifeInAfrica 2 місяці тому

      Deflating only works before getting stuck on the diffs, then the tires do not touch the ground. We think that is how we destroyed our tires and maxtrax. It was deflated, hanging on the diffs, then all that happened was wheel spin on the maxtrax.

    Tell me one thing when you got stuck along the river bank in your game drive, was the sand too much for the landcruiser? Or was it miscalculation of the terrain ahead? I know of the middle man of that park, n i passed by the same route last month with a GD6, again we found a Nissan NP300 4x4 stuck in that same place.

      Hi. We stopped for some ellies in the distance, and as we tried to pull away we could not move. The diffs were already touching the sand. So basically no wheels on the ground, but on solid steel in the form of the front and rear diff
