Savuti and Khwai Magotho - Best overlanding and safari spots in Botswana
SAVUTI - A wild destination in Botswana that needs no introduction.
It houses some of the fiercest predators in Africa. Don’t let their demeanor and laziness deceive you, as this is part of the March pride and they have been known in desperate times to take down elephants.
Even though not seen every day, Savuti is also home to the fastest land animal. The cheetah.
The elusive Leopard can also be spotted, and if you are very patient, some youngsters might surprise you as well
In the previous episode, we had to leave Khwai Safari grounds
We then made our way to the Khwai Community Campsites, Khwai Magotho
Here, with nowhere to go, we were welcomed by the gentle giant himself
We found that the area was very dry, and when comparing it to our visit to the same area just 9 months before, the difference was clearly noticeable.
Even driving around had a completely different feel to it.
We also found that there were a lot more dead elephants around the area. Not something that we like to see.
It was extremely hot during the day, and it was evident that the animals struggled to find shade
As we were looking at this waterbuck, a leopard appeared from behind a bush
As we got all our things ready in the morning, a pack of wild dogs came running toward our campsite
We left the wilddogs as the sighting became very busy, and started tracking a leopard that walked in the middle of the road.
We returned to the leopard again in the afternoon, but the flies got unbearable, so we rather left and on our way back to camp we hit a roadblock
This was our last day in Khwai so we decided to spend it at the river with some ellies.
Just as in Khwai, we came across a lot of dead elephants in Savuti.
It was a long day drive, but we were too excited not to go on an afternoon drive - so we did, and were we glad that we made that choice
This is the Savuti marsh pride. The famous lion pride has been known, in desperate times to hunt and survive on elephant
Unfortunately, there is a generator as well, but it is only running during the day when most are out on game drives.
We filled up our fuel to get the weight of the roof and headed to where we saw the marsh pride the day before.
They were still just as lazy as the day before.
We did not have a lot of time to spend in Savuti, so we made the most of it by being on a game drive most of the day.
Looking for the bushman paintings and we did not find them, perhaps if someone can let us know where they are in the comments so we can find them next time.
We returned to where we saw an impala kill in the morning underneath a bush and sat there for a while. It once again proved that patience does pay off.
Savuti has a curfew and this sighting was quite far away so unfortunately, just as the leopard pulled the Impala into the open we had to leave.
On our last full day in Savuti, we decided to do a bit of sightseeing and not in particular a game drive, so we headed to Quarry Hill
Mom cleaned the cub a bit and then went to a vantage point on the edge of the rock.
As we were leaving and doing a short game drive, we came across another roadblock of lions
In the next episode, we take on some of the loosest sand that we have ever come across before heading out for some sundowners on a boat.

We were hit with a burst of excitement as we left the tarred road from Maun towards Khwai, knowing that it was gravel and sand for the next 2 weeks. After a few kilometers, there is a veterinary fence. There are no issues to travel south to north with meat, but none is allowed to be taken down south towards Maun The road was extremely dry and dusty with loose sand all over as there had been no ...

We are back in Botswana, again. We are constantly asked why we keep on visiting the same places over and over again. By far one of the best Botswana Overlanding Videos I've ever watched. The Ellies at camp take the cup for me. My word, the leopards 🐆. I also love the fact that you were with family. @meks4by4overlanding21 3 дні тому

Though the question is not directed to me Sept is the peak season, it better for most people, plenty of game sightings and all the roads are accessible, December can be rainy during your visit and some roads not accessible due to mud and game viewing also may be difficult as water is everyway and water holes will not be productive for game viewing opportunities... But will the scenery will be more beautiful in December due to green lush vegetation

      @OurLifeInAfrica 2 дні тому

@@warrenpfo thanks. It is a difficult one to answer, but as the other reply says, it is better in the dry months for sightings. The animals will be more concentrated around the river. And in December there will be more water around and the animals will be scattered. But thar said. The area has some amazing scenery and nice big trees, making the area flourish during December. And animals can still be found.

I have continued to enjoy your videos. I live in Louisiana but am a Texan by birth. Much of Africa reminds me of parts of Texas. You have just enough adventure, family and wildlife to keep it interesting And entrancing. Love it all. Ya’ll keep it going.

Woooow!! Your luck with cats is second to none.. I've been somewhat lucky with some cats sightings but I've never seen so much in one trip. Khwai really is the gift that keeps giving.. Thank you for sharing your trip with us. Absolutely wonderful 👌👌

The sightings were some of the best we have ever seen, especially at Khwai. It must have been because it was so dry. Some sightings we did not even film. We are going back again in September and will definitely compare the two trips. Thanks for watching

@@OurLifeInAfrica Woow!! September-November is the best time to visit the delta area in my opinion especially in terms of sightings. Can be unbearably hot though. Go have fun, can't wait to watch the videos..

That's wonderful ! I was born in Central Africa (DRC) and I experienced these emotions in the bush when I was a teenager. I am 72 years old, I relive in my gut these wonderful encounters in the African fauna and flora. Thank you so much. I'm happy tonight...

Hi. Africa is amazing. Especially places like these where nature is at the center. Wildlife is abundant but so is the birds and the nice tall tress. Such a great place. Thanks for watching

Hi Martin, great video once again. How do you find economy of the V6 when towing the caravan for such a trip?

    • @OurLifeInAfrica
      @OurLifeInAfrica 2 місяці тому

Hi. It is not too good. On average it is about 5km/l. This includes open road towing at around 100kph. There are places that it drops to 3km/l especially with really deep sand stretches
