We are Lauren & John, join us on our adventure as accidental farmers where we will attempt to renovate our 150 year old Quinta in the Portuguese mountains. The Bendy Barn is a Mind Yersel' project - check our story from the last 4 years out on Facebook! Our ethos is accessibility. We hope to break physical and financial barriers to those who are normally excluded from accessing mental health support and experiencing life in the mountains. Your support is truly appreciated and we look forward to you joining our journey. Above all, remember to always Mind Yersel'.
We bought a farm in Portugal - 22 acres! Land Tour Part 1
Join us as we give you a tour of our land in the Serra Da Estrela Natural Parque in Central Portugal. We have 22 acres in total, in this video we introduce you to the bottom half. Welcome to The Bendy Barn! We're delighted to share our first video from the Portuguese mountains where we introduce you to our 150 year old traditional Portuguese farmhouse that we're going to renovate.

Hey John, I use to have a hat like that, then I got a job. Where in heavens did you get that hat? Next time I am in Portugal, I'll give you a real man hat. That hat looks a little girlish. LOL

From reading the comments here, John and Lauren I think you are taking the comments too personal. You have to learn to be more engaging and open minded and less condescending. You don't need to get your back up because someone gives advice or makes a questionable statement in your estimation. They are not accusing you of any wrongdoing nor being intrusive, just trying to be helpful and supportive in their own way. If you can't stand the heat, well my advice is to get out of the kitchen.
@@jacobcatstraat690 thank you for giving your opinion. We have had well over 200 comments, I'm not sure how many you've read but most of the comments (98%) have been a joy. Others have been a tad strange, is the word I'd use, so I need to question them or respond as feels appropriate - never condescending simply appropriate to the message received. I appreciate your view, I hope you enjoyed the videos and wish you a happy festive period, however you spend it. Ps, please remember we are Scottish and humour is a huge part of our culture 😊
why the name? what are you doing? Conquering? in the past 800 years many tried. Good luck lasting there with that atitude. I say you need to improve your integration.
Hello, sorry i don't understand your comment, have you commented on the wrong video by mistake? If it is meant for ours then I am happy to explain but I would need to understand better. Thank you.
HELLO. WELCOME TO MY AND NOW YOUR COUNTRY. YOU ARE IN PARADISE, WHERE THE AIR IS PURE, THE NOISE AND NATURE IS PURE, THE FOOD HAS NO CHEMICALS, AND JUST MOLD IT TO YOUR TASTE, I AM A NEW FOLLOWER. HUGS

Don't focus on the peas, focus on the steak. When it comes to UA-cam channel advice, I always start with this. This is one of those UA-cam beginner mistakes we all make, but I’ll say it anyway…do not focus on the numbers. The minute you do that, the minute you resign yourself to a joyless experience of mediocrity. Yes, UA-cam analytics are crucial, and yes, we are all interested in how to monetize your UA-cam videos. Still, they shouldn’t be your main focus when starting out. Becoming obsessed with views, subscribers and whatever other numbers UA-cam serves up to you puts you at risk of becoming distracted from creating the very best content possible. Take it for what it is worth.
@@tommyjames789 thank you for your comment and watching if you did 😁 I'm not sure where you're getting the idea we've made a mistake but I agree with your info, for what it's worth. Though, energy is more important, so if good energy comes from celebrating the small wins then I believe in that. We're exceptionally happy with response and feedback from our first videos and regardless to the numbers we will continue to enjoy and embrace that 😁 Our project Mind Yersel' is our focus and good energy fuels that ❤️
@@TheBendyBarnPortugal-22 I never said "You" directly are making mistakes, I was just commenting on how many You Tubers are obsessed with the number of subscribers. It is just a general comment not to get caught up with the euphoria of numbers which is understandable. You are doing nothing wrong, actually I am happy with your videos and looking forward to future ones. One has to learn not to be on the defensive and glean from constructive criticism, you might learn from it.
@@tommyjames789OK, strange imo, but like I said thank you for watching. What's your channel? I'd be interested to see your content. 😊
Dear Lauren and John, Christmas is the only time of year in which one can sit in front of a dead tree and eat candy out of socks. Enjoy! Wishing you a white Christmas! (And when you run out of white, just open a bottle of red). Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year for 2025 and beyond to you both and your family. Stay safe and keep well.
@@mikemurphy2112 Merry Christmas, Feliz Natal! 🎄
I agree John , the view from that water tank is amazing. Needs a bench to sit and take in the view Cheers!!
@@davidwhite6617 Absolutely, a bench is definitely required! 😁
@@TheBendyBarnPortugal-22 When will you be open for volunteers for this season?
@davidwhite6617 we haven't decided just yet, there's a few reasons for that. I will explain more as we go. It's based around my injury. Do you have specific skills if you don't mind me asking? Often we can have general volunteers but this next quarter if we have any it needs to be more specific! I can add you to our existing waiting list if you'd like. (There are around 20 people on it at present).
Yes I do, as I mentioned in my brief introduction. I am a retired Carpenter , Builder, Landscaper, Farmer , Tree harvester. Theses are all areas where I have extensive experience. Also culinary experience and I play a mean Highland tenor drum. If you need a volunteer in the band. Oh and did I mention very humble.
@davidwhite6617 ah, I remember now sorry! There's been SO many comments, which we are super grateful for! Keep your eye on the page, we put opportunities there! It won't be before mid January most likely. And yes, I can tell, very humble haha! 😊 Thank you 😊
Your orange tree that produces on alternate sides in alternate years: I wonder if two different varieties could have been grafted onto the two sides, and they just happen to produce best in alternate years? I really enjoyed the video, your land, and your accents 😊
Thank you for watching! Wow, that is an excellent point that neither of us has considered before! It actually makes perfect sense. As accidental farmers we have a lot to learn haha! I hope you continue to follow our journey, we need all the tips we can get! 🤣 Remember to subscribe 😁
Interesting and Informative 👍
You are both natural in front of the camera ❤ I am looking forward to visiting in 2025 ❤
Thank you so much! Canny wait either 😍😍😍

Sounds like a brilliant idea what you are both doing n im sure it will mean a lot to all who visit. Im trying to do something but on a way, way smaller scale, but mainly just for my own sanity. I became disabled in Feb 2019 after being a proper work alcoholic but unfortunately, never saved for rainy days, i always thought I'd start tomorrow. These past 5 years, I've felt so trapped in a tiny bungalow with way too much time to think n feeling like im going crazy. So i can image how hard its been not getting to your favourite parts of your own land. In June this year my mum became ill n i took the steps to get my driving licence back because i feel like a total burden having to rely on others to take me anywhere, so i went for a medical, eye test etc even travelled through to Glasgow to take an assessment to make sure i can drive safely using hand controls, which made me feel 18 again going for my driving test 🤪but i managed it and got a great report from them which gave me a boost but sadly the whole process took too long because my mum passed mid August 😢 but i was able to be there until the end when she passed. My goal now is to still to get my licence back (which is being held ransom cause my doctor wants £160 from DVLA to fill in a form) but i want to buy an ex delivery van n hopefully with help from friends n family, convert it so that it has all the things i need so that i can do some travelling but its gonna take years to save up 🙄 Anyway, my moto now is that life is way too short, n i think what you are both doing for yourselves and others is amazing, i wish you every success.
Hello, firstly thank you so much for sharing your story. It can be a really difficult thing to do, but there is so much power held within sharing. The last 5 years sound incredibly tough. It sounds like somehow, despite it all you are finding the strength to Mind Yersel' and strive for things in life that will bring you independence and happiness. This is incredible and it may take time but it sounds like you will get there. Grief is such a difficult journey, we were built on my journey through loss so I truly understand the complexities. Take your time and be gentle with yourself. Please know that when your van is able and we have the appropriate set up completed you may visit, free of charge. It's not much, but it's something that we can offer. I hope you continue to follow our journey and I wish you luck and healing. Remember, Mind Yersel'. 💗
If you want to keep your sanity, get a dog or cat.

Let's hope it is royalty free music, if not trouble is arising. It may receive damaging copyright strikes because of copyright issues. As tempting as it may be to use whatever you want in your videos, you need to ensure that you have the rights to do so. I don't want to delve into your personal financial life but how do you sustain a farm with upcoming massive renovations and live a normal life with todays prices unless you have a steady income. Just trying to live day to day is financially daunting let alone with major renovation expenses.

It seems like you’ve undertaken a considerable task by trying to maintain all this acreage , required fire management and all. Hope you two are up to it. Good luck
@@DonAntoniodetucum Hello, thanks for watching. We've actually been here 3 years and the management of the land is much easier than you might expect! Our videos will go on to explain that in detail. We choose this land after searching for a long time. The consideration of fire management was one of our biggest challenges when choosing land and we take the responsibility very seriously. The fires of 2022 left us with a story to tell. Which we will. I hope you continue to follow our journey to understand more. 😊

I'm very interested in your project. Unfortunately, I don't speak Portuguese very well. I picked up "boa tarde" and "mais o menos", but nothing more..... could you put subtitles for those of us who aren't fluent in Portuguese, please?
Hello, welcome and thank you for watching! So far your Portuguese is perfect 😁, from memory they were the only Portuguese words in this particular video. Maybe our Scottish is deceiving haha! English subtitles are enabled on the videos and there is also a transcript you can follow, provided by UA-cam which I myself discovered today! We did notice that we should have also written the Portuguese words when spoken , so thank you for affirming that and we will include it in future videos! Dear Lauren and John...Congratulations on acquiring a farm in Portugal. Don't be intimidated with 22 acres of land, by Canadian standards this is smaller than the flower garden in my back yard. You have embarked on a wonderful journey in life although daunting at first, you will indeed prevail given determination and the kindness of people helping you to fulfill your dream. Now that you have shared the farm on videos, please be advised that it is also our farm now, we have a vested interest and hopefully your videos will help you grow mentally, physically and financially. Please take care of yourself and best of luck in the future. Stay safe, take care of each other and keep your power dry.
Thank you again for watching Allan. We're not intimidated at all, been here for almost 3 years now on and off but, we are managing the farm well, despite my injury. The farm was bought to support the Mind Yersel' project and aid our wellbeing physically and mentally. So far it's doing a grand job. Thank you for the well wishes! 🙂
