The Bells of North Perrott, Somerset

There are six bells hung in the tower of St Martin's parish church in the village of North Perrott. The church can be found a short drive down a lane from the main road through the village, on a track shared with a farm (which many ringers found out by the many passing tractors!). The six bells were cast by three different founders. The tenor is the oldest bell, having been cast in 1786 by Geor...

The third and final installment of ''The Aylsham Trilogy''. A video I have been holding off on uploading for a while, as the bells are very special to me, as they are my own mini-ring. The bells were cast and hung in 2021 by Matthew Higby & Co, and were hung in Aylsham. There are 8 bells, and the tenor weighs 19lbs 8oz and is tuned to D. The name 'The John of Gaunt Ring', comes from the militar...

Grandsire Doubles at Rodmell, East Sussex

The six bells at St Peter's Church in Rodmell had been unringable from the 1950's, when the last recorded ringing on the bells was, until a project devised and managed by Michael Royalton-Kisch saw the bells rehung and retuned and brought back into regular use. The project saw the bells sympathetically restored and fitted with new headstocks and wheels, the frames strengthened and the bells reh...

St Peter and St Paul's church in Muchelney holds heavy ring of five bells. With the bells being hung on plain bearings they need pulling all the time, and we found that if you even slightly start to relax the bells will drop like stones. They sound magnificent with the treble having been cast in 1692 by Thomas Knight (of Closworth), the 2nd by Thomas Purdue & Thomas Knight in 1707, the 3rd bein...

The church of St Peter's in Preston Park, a northern district of Brighton, holds a ring of three bells. All cast in 1906 by Gillett & Johnson of Croydon, they are hung in an anticlockwise rope circle and rung from the ground floor. The bells are all on their original fittings, and sound lovely. The treble and 2nd are incredibly light set, which makes for a fun challenge, but can be seen catchin...

What a fantastic set of bells just one question how do you stand the bells, I notice a counter weigh on some of the bells. I keep thinking about building a small demonstration bell as maybe a recruitment aid or just to show what happens up in the tower. As I'm sure not many of the congregation will know how we ring .

Depending on the composition, a traditional touch of 120 Grandsire Doubles can end either with a plain lead (which is the same as Plain Hunt), or it can end directly after a call (a Bob or Single). In this case, it's a bob that brings it round.
