The history of Japan is very old, about 2,000 years since the Emperor's reign, but humans began to live in villages and communities in this island nation about 14,000 years ago, during “the Jomon pottery” culture. (That's 30,000 years ago, if you count the Neolithic period.) The country name word "NIPPON”(Japan) means "the land under the sun" , but another name is "WA" or "YAMATO" , meaning “Peacefully Harmony among People and with Nature”.　So Japan's name means “the Land under the Sun” and” the Land of "Great Harmony of People and Nature,” Surrounded by the sea on all sides, this island nation has a warm and humid climate and is blessed with abundant clear water resources, plants, and fisheries resources, and people have lived in peace since ancient times. Since ancient times, people have respected harmony, lived peacefully as a group, exercised wisdom to overcome numerous natural disasters, lived in harmony with nature, and enjoyed the blessings of nature. The ancient name of the country, "Yamato, Wa," expresses the wishes and realities of such people to live. There are two main reasons why Japan, an island nation, has developed its own unique culture. One is the natural environment of the warm and humid climate volcanic islands. Second, because they are geographically isolated from Eurasia continent in the Pacific Ocean, they have historically been less vulnerable to invasion from other continental nations. These two factors (an island nation's natural environment and geopolitical isolation) are the reasons why Japan is different from other Asian nations in continent and historically gave birth to a unique Japanese culture. Yamato means "land of harmony between man and nature." Unlike Buddhist temples, an imported religion that originated in India and entered Japan via China, Shinto shrines (Jinja, Taisha, Jingu, Gugu) worship the gods of Japan's ancient and unique religion. When Buddhism was introduced to Japan nearly 1,500 years ago, the Japanese chose to coexist and use Buddhism together with Shinto, which worships its own old and unique deities. While importing Buddhism, the Japanese did not discontinue the ancient tradition of Shintoism, and the same people, without being divided into factions, chose to use both Shintoism and Buddhism separately or simultaneously, depending on the situation. This is not a confrontation, but rather a "flexible and harmonious" way of believing in both Buddhism and Shinto at the same time. This is proof that Japan was not invaded by another country, but rather imported by its own initiative. This was not a confrontation, but a very Japanese solution that was "flexible and respectful of harmony. Japan is probably the only country in the world that has historically practiced this kind of religious behavior. This spirit has continued to the present day, even after the opening of the country to the outside world at the time of the Meiji Restoration, and Japanese people do not find this fusion of religions strange or mysterious, but use different religions rationally for different events. Birth is celebrated in the Shinto way, and growth is celebrated in the Shinto way until the child becomes a school child. For weddings, people choose one style from Shinto, Christian, or Buddhist, depending on their preference. Funerals are almost always Buddhist, with burial and memorial services held in the style of each family's hereditary Buddhist denomination. The New Year is celebrated in the Shinto style, and prayers to the gods are made at Shinto shrines as Hatsumode (New Year's visit). This is done as a formal event in one person's life normaly. I think it is more accurate to say that Japanese people are not religious, but rather that they believe in multiple religions at the same time. However, many Japanese people themselves are so unaware of this that they probably claim to be non-religious. But this is based on the flexible and rational thinking that when importing a different culture into one's own culture for the first time, one does not settle on black and white or eliminate it, but takes the new good things to the old and improves"KAIZEN" them to make them even better.
