Aoshima Shrine-a serene sanctuary steeped in centuries of mystique and tradition. With its vermilion torii gate standing sentinel against the azure sea, Aoshima beckons travelers to step into a world where ancient rituals intertwine with the rhythmic pulse of ocean waves. Join us on a journey of discovery as we unravel the secrets and beauty of this sacred haven, where spiritual reverence meets natural splendor.
This is Cinematic Asia
Welcome to Miyazaki, Japan, a land where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modern life. Nestled along its stunning coastline lies Aoshima Shrine, a sacred sanctuary revered by locals and visitors alike. But Aoshima is not only known for its spiritual significance; it's also renowned as one of Japan's premier surf destinations
As you step onto the island of Aoshima, you're enveloped by a sense of tranquility. The air is perfumed with the scent of saltwater and cedar, while the gentle rustle of palm trees provides a serene soundtrack to your journey.
Passing through the iconic torii gate, you enter a realm where spirituality and nature intertwine. Aoshima Shrine is dedicated to the sea deity, Watatsumi, guardian of the ocean and protector of fishermen.
The shrine's architecture is a testament to Japan's rich cultural heritage, with its vermilion pillars and ornate rooflines evoking a sense of reverence and awe. Take a moment to admire the intricate carvings that adorn the shrine, each telling a story of ancient legends and mythical creatures.
Visitors come from far and wide to pay their respects and seek blessings for safe travels, bountiful harvests, and prosperity. Whether you're a devout believer or simply a curious traveler, Aoshima Shrine offers a place of solace and reflection amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Couples often visit Aoshima Shrine to seek blessings for their relationship. as they pray for a strong and enduring bond, as well as for happiness and good fortune in their shared journey.
To the right of the main shrine, a path lined with the wishes of visitors written on wooden boards leads to a smaller shrine at the island's geographic centre. Next to it are twin palm trees called meoto biro (female and male). Would-be lovers can purchase brightly coloured strings (¥100) to tie to ropes between the trees as an offering.
Seashells, washed ashore by the surrounding ocean currents, hold symbolic importance as offerings at Aoshima Shrine. They are believed to represent the bounty of the sea and are often presented by visitors as tokens of gratitude, wishes for prosperity, or prayers for safe voyages. These shells, collected and arranged within the shrine grounds, create a visual tapestry that honors the connection between humanity and the natural world.
A hiraka is a type of unglazed clay plate that has been used for religious purposes in Japan since the Yayoi period (300 BCE-300 CE) e, Visitors can try to uncover their fortune by throwing a hiraka made from local clay toward the sacred site beyond the fence by the shrine. Before tossing your plate, bow twice in the direction of the target and think of something to wish for. It is said that your wish will come true if the hiraka lands within the sacred spot, while having the dish break upon landing should result in good luck and protection against evi
The Devil's Washboard rock formations, known as "Oni no Sentakuita" in Japanese, are a natural wonder located along the coastline of Aoshima Island in Miyazaki, Japan. These unique geological formations have captivated visitors for centuries with their striking appearance and mysterious origins. The exact formation process of the Devil's Washboard remains a subject of debate among geologists. One theory suggests that the ridges were formed through a combination of tectonic activity, erosion, and sedimentation over millions of years.
Whether you seek spiritual enlightenment, natural beauty, or simply a moment of peace, Aoshima Shrine welcomes you with open arms. So come, embark on a journey of discovery, and let the magic of Aoshima captivate your heart and soul.
From Miyazaki City, you can reach Aoshima Island by taking the local train on the JR Nippo Main Line to JR Aoshima Station, which is the nearest station to the island.

*Types of Shrines ・JINJYA (Shrine): An institution dedicated to the gods of Japan ・TAISYA (Grand Shrine): A shrine of higher rank, a head shrine facility that oversees affiliated shrines of the same name. ・JINGU (Imperial Shrine): A shrine whose deities are emperors or members of the imperial family. ・GU(Gu Shrine) : Shrines whose deities are important figures in Japanese history, excluding members of the imperial family. The history of Japan is very old, about 2,000 years since the Emperor's reign, but humans began to live in villages and communities in this island nation about 14,000 years ago, during “the Jomon pottery” culture. (That's 30,000 years ago, if you count the Neolithic period.) The country name word "NIPPON”(Japan) means "the land under the sun" , but another name is "WA" or "YAMATO" , meaning “Peacefully Harmony among People and with Nature”. So Japan's name means “the Land under the Sun” and” the Land of "Great Harmony of People and Nature,” Surrounded by the sea on all sides, this island nation has a warm and humid climate and is blessed with abundant clear water resources, plants, and fisheries resources, and people have lived in peace since ancient times. Since ancient times, people have respected harmony, lived peacefully as a group, exercised wisdom to overcome numerous natural disasters, lived in harmony with nature, and enjoyed the blessings of nature. The ancient name of the country, "Yamato, Wa," expresses the wishes and realities of such people to live. There are two main reasons why Japan, an island nation, has developed its own unique culture. One is the natural environment of the warm and humid climate volcanic islands. Second, because they are geographically isolated from Eurasia continent in the Pacific Ocean, they have historically been less vulnerable to invasion from other continental nations. These two factors (an island nation's natural environment and geopolitical isolation) are the reasons why Japan is different from other Asian nations in continent and historically gave birth to a unique Japanese culture. Yamato means "land of harmony between man and nature." Unlike Buddhist temples, an imported religion that originated in India and entered Japan via China, Shinto shrines (Jinja, Taisha, Jingu, Gugu) worship the gods of Japan's ancient and unique religion. When Buddhism was introduced to Japan nearly 1,500 years ago, the Japanese chose to coexist and use Buddhism together with Shinto, which worships its own old and unique deities. While importing Buddhism, the Japanese did not discontinue the ancient tradition of Shintoism, and the same people, without being divided into factions, chose to use both Shintoism and Buddhism separately or simultaneously, depending on the situation. This is not a confrontation, but rather a "flexible and harmonious" way of believing in both Buddhism and Shinto at the same time. This is proof that Japan was not invaded by another country, but rather imported by its own initiative. This was not a confrontation, but a very Japanese solution that was "flexible and respectful of harmony. Japan is probably the only country in the world that has historically practiced this kind of religious behavior. This spirit has continued to the present day, even after the opening of the country to the outside world at the time of the Meiji Restoration, and Japanese people do not find this fusion of religions strange or mysterious, but use different religions rationally for different events. Birth is celebrated in the Shinto way, and growth is celebrated in the Shinto way until the child becomes a school child. For weddings, people choose one style from Shinto, Christian, or Buddhist, depending on their preference. Funerals are almost always Buddhist, with burial and memorial services held in the style of each family's hereditary Buddhist denomination. The New Year is celebrated in the Shinto style, and prayers to the gods are made at Shinto shrines as Hatsumode (New Year's visit). Ancestral memorial services are held in the Buddhist ceremony during the summer Obon, and Christmas is celebrated in December with great festivity. This is done as a formal event in one person's life normaly. I think it is more accurate to say that Japanese people are not religious, but rather that they believe in multiple religions at the same time. However, many Japanese people themselves are so unaware of this that they probably claim to be non-religious. But this is based on the flexible and rational thinking that when importing a different culture into one's own culture for the first time, one does not settle on black and white or eliminate it, but takes the new good things to the old and improves"KAIZEN" them to make them even better.
