How I draft my own knit patterns & tutorial (with short row shaping!)
Переглядів 1 тис.14 днів тому
Hey! Thanks for watching :) I received quite a few questions on how I self draft my knitting patterns, hopefully this will help you start drafting your own too! Knitwear design can be such a personal thing, and you will most likely develop shapes, stitches and colours that more closely align with your own style but you can use this video as a starting point and insight into my process and take ...

Love the cases! Can't wait for an update! 😍
Thank you so much!
The cardigans are amazing! Are you publishing your patterns? Liked and subscribed 😊
Thank you! I am currently writing up a few, if you want more up to date info on tests etc i always post them on Instagram xx
ur the cutest!!
Loved this!! Thanks so much for making it. I’m halfway through knitting a self-drafted drop shoulder atm and realising that I would have benefitted from putting some short rows into it so that the shoulders sloped….next time!
Glad you enjoyed it! At least you know for next time :)
Very thorough; nicely done. I knit from vintage patterns (written for only one size) and I'm constantly having to figure out how to tweak things to get a good fit. Sleeve caps and armscye are the hardest. If only I had the dressmaking skills that you have....
Thank you! Yeah honestly I would say if you want to learn more you should look into a lot of sewing and fabric pattern cutting resources, as the same applies to knitwear !
New watcher, the instagram thing is so real because I literally went over to your instagram to go follow you… and I already was. 🫣
I would love to purchase your stitch markers and I agree sets of 4 and 8 would be great xx
I also mostly seld draft and im a fairly new knitter. So this was very helpful
This was really helpful! I have been self drafting my designs basically since I started knitting 6 years ago, but I have always been unsure how to incorporate short rows. When you do a raglan, do you increase at the raglan while doing the German short rows?
I’m glad it helped, and yes! You just do the increases as you would normally, just make sure your first short row includes all 4 points and keep increasing the round as you go :) same with if you have a stitch repeat, you just knit it as you normally would
love the heart cardigan, so def that one I think!
It would make an amazing kimono 🤔
I love the needle cases!! I like the ribbon wrap a lot but the button is probs most practical. Would love to see one in striped fabric 😍😍
A NEW VLOG!!!!!!
Omg i love the needle cases! They would look so so cute in like a plain white or a white floral fabric!! I don’t have an opinion on the fastening, but an additional option is a magnetic snap button (my preferred choice) but those can be pricey… also, maybe a second pocket or that existing pocket separated into two on the interchangeable case would be useful, but that’s a personal preference! I’d also love to see some more plain stitch markers sets i.e. where the charms are all the same colour. either way, super excited for the cases and stitch markers to go live! 🤍💕
Thank you for the feedback! 💞
Sorry I think I missed it what colour is the alpaca silk? It’s so cute
Loved the sweater you designed for Hobi (I think). It was cream and green. Where do you sell your patterns?
I love that split hem sweater! You are helping me feel more confident about self-drafting - it's so empowering!
Please please write a pattern for this dark pink alpaca and the green raglan you made with the green alpaca and mohair with this 2X2 rib on the sleeves and the arms!
Love your videos (I discovered them fairly recently). You have inspired me with your brushed alpaca swatch! I need to make a cardigan so may use that yarn, or something else. I’ve yet to decide but it’s exciting ☺
Thanks so much! Yeah its soooo soft
Please please please release the pattern for the dark pink sweater with the bow ties! I’ve dreamt with that sweater for ages and you’ve executed perfectly.
Thank you!
Your channel is cool and cozy, It's nice as well that you are based in the UK because sometimes I feel like a lot of my content consumption is not local which is fine but Its cool that you're UK based :-) Would love to know more about your seamstress job though
Thanks so much! Yeah it’s mainly for repairs and alterations etc, maybe ill do a Q&A at some point x
all those pinks are so beautiful!! great designs!!
I really love everything you make❤
Thank you! X
I am curious to see how the noro madara works up vs the isager aran tweed!
Would love a pattern for the sweater you’re making your bf!! Been dreaming of something similar for agee
i don't normally put much merit or thought into certain colors "suiting" people better, but i gotta say that dark pink alpaca color looks absolutely and noticeably stunning on you!
Thanks so much! It’s funny considering i own no other pink clothes haha
I really love your teal cardigan!! Would love to see a pattern for that ❤ I’ve been in love with it since the first time I saw it in your vlogs!!
I think as of right now that may be my top contender !
Would love to see a pattern for the pink drops air sweater or the cobalt blue 2X2 ribbed sweater! Also I’m a new sub to your channel-keep up the great work ❤
Second this, air is my fav yarn so I would love the pattern too❤🎉
Thank you so much i defo need to get some in the works!
That Noro yarn is to die for!! I would’ve totally broke my buying ban to get that too!! Good choice! ❤❤
Love the pink sweater with the ties on the side, the tension and the clean look of it 😍 I'm knitting a lace sweater for my mom, a scarf and crocheting legwarmers. Love your videos, keep it up ❤
Thank you so much! Yeah I defo want to try out some lace stitches soon too :)
Love this! I have recently finished a cable knit sweater and a bonnet with drops air (hi wool warehouse sale) and I have to say...the sweater is already pilling because I've worn it non stop. But they are both so soft and the yarn is so satisfying to work with!
Loved your bonnet!! ❤❤ desperate to get my hands on some drops air now thanks to Bethany and you!! 🤣🤣 just waiting for that sale!!
I agree with this so much! I started a skating account just before lockdown and grew really quickly. After I started uni and started posting a little less my engagement plummeted and I lost like 20k followers😂 I really enjoyed posting and keeping up with it during lockdown but trying to keep up with it is like having another job on top of everything and an actual job, studying and life etc. I also found that I didn’t like how much time I spent online, I really enjoyed making videos and having the community but ultimately I am a lot happier when I’m not focusing on social media too much.
Wow yeah that is a lot! I agree and while it’s enjoyable it is a lot of work, then you miss like one day of posting and it’s like you’ve gotta start all over again 🤣
Your sweater is gorgeous - beautiful color and so cosy,. The dark pink looks good by itself and also with the color you have on - I'm thinking the Selene sweater with both colors 🥰. I love Drops Air, but like all alpaca/mohair, it is a nightmare to rip back because the yarn sticks to itself.
Thank you! Yeah the air was a little fiddly, I didn’t fine it as bad to rip back but the sewn bind off was horrible
Would be really interested in hearing about your process for self drafting patterns. Particularly any information you have that isn't just about raglans as that's the majority of what seems to be available on UA-cam.
I’ll definitely try and compile some information, I may put up like a poll or a questions box on my insta story so people can ask things specifically x
A tip for when shaping colors with gels, use alcohol instead of acetone
Ohh okay thank you I’ll defo do that! Z
I would love to see videos about your free handing process 😍
I get what you’re saying about the instagram algorithm. It’s like hashtags along don’t do help with engagement as they used to. I have a small knitting account and am not great about updating my makes. I knit and crochet a lot but you couldn’t tell from my feed alone. I applaud you and others who keep their accounts so interesting. And I’m so glad you also pointed out how the people you follow are not all that show up in your feed. It’s a lot of suggestions and ads and it’s a little annoying. Pinterest has gone that way too… But Beth, I always enjoy your videos and I’m so amazed at how talented you are ❤ I hope to learn to sew in the near future. So many ideas and so little time 😅
Thank you so much! Yes I agree sooo many ads or suggested content, which I do like but would prefer if it was just on the explore page as realistically that’s what it’s for! Also, defo agree hashtags are no help, but I still use them just out of habit really!
I look forward to your videos and love seeing your projects so much! I’d love to see a video about drafting your own patterns (obviously not to give away paid for patterns) but I feel like people don’t show the process very often.
Thank you so much! A few people have asked so I will defo try and do one at some point, once I’ve got enough information together z
the joy with which im filled with when i see your videos on my recommendation page is unmatched
Thank you so much!
I’m excited to see what you will be knitting with all that great yarn.
Im in the US so I really enjoy seeing the different types of yarns you are trying! The isager Aran tweed is so pretty!!! I just knit the baables sheep hat using letlopi and it’s scratchy but I really like the finished project!
That’s good to know about the lettlopi! I’ve just mid blocked the project and I like how it’s coming out so far :)
Poppy is sooo good !! I’ve been looking at it online too so I think I’ll pull the trigger on my next quantity, I think it’ll look so good as a round neck cardi, very sezanne vibe !
Ohhh yes very true, the colour is sooo nice irl you should defo get some if you’ve been considering it !
Love a long chatty vlog! I have been drooling over that Sandnes Poppy colour for so long, I can't wait to see what you make with it. Also I bought so much alpaca during the Drops Wool Warehouse sale that I had to start this youtube channel lol, sort of relieved they've ended it now. And I agree about "I just wanted to use up the yarn" - mindful & wearable is where it's at.
Hahah I know right every time drops has a sale I’m like ah here we go again
So early! But I love it! Can't wait to see what you'll knit up with these :)
Thank you!
I love the pink jumper ! I’m such a drops air Stan I use it so much for balaclavas and bonnets esp for gift knits it’s such a good price
Thank so much! Ohh I love the balaclava idea that sounds stunning
Always love a new vlog❤. Would you consider making a video talking about what inspires your designs and how you taught yourself to design and construct your patterns?
Yeah definitely if that’s something people would be interested in!
