Dragon fruit update 2024.13: Toothpick grafting on the trellis top
Here I have four toothpick grafted seedlings on an established dragon fruit trellis top branches. Tow of them are grafted on freshly cut surface of new branch buds, and tow of them are grafted directly on old branches. Then half of them are covered with plastic bags and the other half have no coverage to test if the seedlings grafted this way can survive without any covering.

It seems that the very productive dragon fruit varieties are easy to be exhausted. In stead of trying to save them, one other option is to replace them with fresh cuttings. The advantage of it is the growth of fresh cuttings are much more vigorous than trying to save the old plant, and it takes only 15 to 18 months to get fruits

  • @gofwkratos410

    I think the problem with organic soil is that as it gets broken down and used up by the plant, the roots at the bottom start to get crushed together and root bound. I noticed a decline on my dragon fruit too and the soil level got low on my pot so I top it off with more potting mix. It had roots shooting down from the top already so i buried those in the process and my plants started to recover. I noticed that some of your dragon fruit also have roots climbing down from their post so thats why they probably recover. Seems organic soil causes root problem and then the decline. So when you plant a new rooted cutting it will thrive because it has a lot of space to shoot out roots from the top of the pot. Thats why you see so many people starting to recommed "permanent" inorganic potting mix lol makes sense, no soil depletion. Sorry for long post, just an observation i had

      Thank you for your thought. I agree that organic soil does break down over time and the soil level gets lower. I think that is the best situation to add more organic soil on the top without overflowing. Dragon fruits are shallow rooted plants. When you add more soil on the top, very soon, you can see new roots growing in the top soil layer. The recovery of the declined plant is not only relying on the air roots from the top but also new roots growing from the bottom . Using sandy soil is a good idea but it still needs time to verify its long-term effect. I am doing experiment to verify it too in the meanwhile.

I just make it a point to match the diameter of the stem with the diameter of the toothpick by scratching it with my knife to the exact size. Scratching the stem and cutting it diagonally increased the success rate too.

    • @xiaoli2142
      @xiaoli2142 14 днів тому

      The genetic calculation does not specify RR x KVA or KVA x RR, meaning the hybrids produced by either crosses will have the same probability for the hybrid variety. Besides, there will be so many variation in each cross, it will be very difficult to compare the differences between the two crosses, so it will be a lot of work but hard to get conclusion.

    Yes! another video thanks 🙏😊 Just like the lavender recessive gene in chickens produces unique feather colors, genetics in dragon fruit determines traits like flesh color, sweetness, and size. In both cases, careful breeding involves selecting parents with specific genes to create new and interesting varieties, making the exploration of genetics an exciting process in both animals and plants. ❤ We're currently growing Wallace Ranches hybrid seedlings and plan to cross them with another variety.

    Really fun to follow along! Can you comment on any issues you see with crossing KVM with RR when RR already had KVM genes?

    • @xiaoli2142
      @xiaoli2142 19 днів тому

      KVA is the mother of RR, so half of the chromosomes of RR are from KVA, so they are genetically very close to each other, which could trigger the self-sterile mechanism when you using the pollen from RR to pollinate KVA. I always wondering how the self-sterile occurs. As far as I understand from readings, that when pollen pollinate a flower, many tiny pollen tubes will form along the stem of the stigma to guide the germ cells travel to the ovary. When self-sterile occurs, the plant produces enzyme in the stigma stem to block the formation of pollen tubes from its own so that the pollen from itself will not reach the ovary, while pollen from other varieties will resist these enzymes so their germ cells will travel through their pollen tube to fertilize the flower. So, if RR inherited the pollen tube formation genes from TC instead of KVA, it will form TC type of pollen tubes instead of KVA pollen tubes, which will allow these pollen tube resist the enzyme from KVA so it won't block the pollen tube formation, therefore allowing it to complete the fertilization process. I am just guessing, I am not sure if it is the true mechanism.

      @@xiaoli2142your knowledge in this subject is impressive! Do you think there will be any difference in the resulting seed traits if you take pollen from plant A onto a flower of plant B versus pollen from plant B onto a flower from plant A?

    • @xiaoli2142
      @xiaoli2142 19 днів тому

      @@codyj7769 I think it won't have much of a difference in either scenario. The chromosome segregation and recombination would be the same but I can't rule out the influences of the mitochondrial DNA and the proteins that are involved in this process. I tried to do an experiment just like this, to use pollen from Bruni to pollinate Sin Espanis and vice versa, then I realize that there will be so many variations in each cross, it will be very difficult to compare the results from the two scenarios, so I kind of abandoned the experiment.

      The pollen was air dried over the counter at room temperature for 24 hours before freezing. It is easy enough and good enough for pollinate of dragon fruit flowers from the same growing season. To pollinate the flowers from next growing season, I have tried to freeze the pollen with silica gel pack, hopping that the silica can continue to dry the pollen further to preserve its activity, but I have tried twice.
