The Dresden Files Chicago Tour
In November, I went to Chicago where I visited various sites related to my favourite book series: the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.
I had a lot of fun and, while this isn't the usual fair for my channel, the scratch had to be itched.
I created a playlist for my trip that I think also functions well as a Dresden Files soundtrack: ua-cam.com/play/PL_YbOMQ3Sh-t70l55Rks2nmdS9e9705fV.html&si=j9bLVg-Ek2I2OwZV

    In Dead Beat, there's a mention that Sue's skull is displayed separately (for the reasons you describe). Presumably, the offscreen necromancy involved smashing some glass and moving the skull back to the original body.

    "the main character gets beat up a lot" Hell's bells, that's the understatement of the century. I sometimes wish that the City of Chicago would lean into the Dresden Files stuff. Like they make a faux-grave close to Inez to match Harry's in Grave Peril. Like they make the headstone and the hole and put a black leather duster in there as a neat trick. Or maybe someone legitimately makes Mac's bar or something. I love how you got a chance to type out "The Building Was On Fire And It Wasn't My Fault" into a musuem typewriter. Ahh, the Bean.....ahhhhhhhh, the Bean. Of course, Demonreach doesn't want people seeing it who aren't meant to see it. They actually did address the Sue's skull was separate from the main body, and that was actually one of the key points of the story in finding the Word Of Kemler. St. Mary of the Angels always strikes me as big even by Church standards when it comes to seeing pictures of it. It also makes me think that Harry gets intimidated from the size of the Church since he's close to 7 foot tall and still describes it as massive.

    Out of curiosity I went to the living museum website and looked up the "Warren Cup". It didn't do anything dramatic like try and excuse the type of sexual relationships depicted but still it felt really weird to be "in conversation" with an object like that. Really highlighted the need for curation and interpretation as I think it would have been possible to chat with the object without ever raising the issue of its subject matter/Roman sexual politics.

    I hate that they're calling these things "AI". AI has always referred to the (so far science fiction) idea of an artificial person. These... aren't that. The (simplified) way these things are made is by giving them a lot of examples of "here's a question I might ask, and here's the answer I would want". It then comes up with an algorithm that generates the expected answers for as many of the questions as possible. Then, you can ask it a new question that it hasn't seen before and it can use that algorithm to generate an answer. That's all that's happening here. An algorithm that a computer made up by randomly trying things until it met a goal. An actual AI would be, like, an artificial brain with its own perspective, ideas, and opinions. Assuming it knew what it was talking about, something like that would actually be super helpful in a museum. It could basically be a well-informed companion for guests that would otherwise struggle to interpret the exhibits.

    I'd love for someone to play with a model speaking as my corpse. The difference is that I'm alive now and able to say I like the idea. I can give explicit consent to the idea. Those corpses can't and haven't given consent. Sorry if too many comments. I just enjoy responding to a video as I watch it. Sometimes to detriment. (Ironically, if the creator had used AI search to learn about museums before making this, as bad as those tools are, they still would've gotten a better perspective. :P)

  • @guard13007
    @guard13007 Місяць тому

    I keep seeing people praising "AI search" but every time I use it, it's confidently wrong and ignores vast swaths of reality. In some cases it's understandable (LLMs only focus on popularity, not truth), but other times it's just wildly wrong with no discernable reason. Your description of trying to find potlatch-related artefacts is such a perfect example of how bad AI search is. (My favorite example is asking an LLM about throium reactors. They will always bring up a lot of info about China because US-focused media wants to paint China as an enemy and therefore anything that is done in China that can be twisted into a threat is promoted heavily. Most of the research on thorium reactors has occurred in India, but LLMs will only mention this if you specifically ask for it. You have to already know about the topic in order to get real results instead of what's in the news.)

    Based on the description of what it is, I think the person who made this only visited a museum when they were a child and created their memory of it instead of revisiting what it is. Or they haven't ever been to a museum.

  • @guard13007
    @guard13007 Місяць тому

    Stealing the name of living museums is a very AI thing to do, especially considering LLMs stole the name AI so that serious AI research can't be taken seriously anymore because it's conflated with only one branch of AI research now. :D

    It makes me uncomfortable how often you say "AI" when describing a LLM chatbot. Mentally conceptualize the spellchecker/word suggestion thing in Microsoft Word - that's closer to what those LLMs are , very very advanced spell checkers. When you say AI (I know that's how they describe it, but .... please don't allow marketers to define our language) it implies things that are simply not true and make the discussion harder. Sorry to bitch, doing my part to maintain the ..... it's not an overton window, but it's the first term that comes to mind - when it comes to this LLM stuff: That tech bro probably /did/ just walk in and decide he knew more about museums. I'm not a techbro doctor, but casual observation suggests those dudes love to invent something that already exists and make it more complicated and worse and more expensive. I'd really like to see the British Museum. Years ago I tried going, but turns out it was some sort of holiday and the admission line was wrapped around the entire building, haven't had a chance to get back to see it since, but I will some day! nice video

    • @professorpeachez
      @professorpeachez Місяць тому

      I admittedly don't know much about AI or LLM's outside of where it invades my plane of knowledge. I hope you're able to make it to the British Museum one day, but in the meantime, I'm sure there are plenty of local museums who would LOVE to have your patronage :)

    Good vid. Like the last one, I think you have excellent criticisms. That said, I think this is again an illustration of two major issues: 1) AI is still young. It's got a lot of improvements to make - and is improving at a dramatic pace. 2) this guy doesn't understand the museum field. I'd also add that his app just sounds poorly designed. I wonder if he put a lot of thought into it or if it was just a random weekend project where he shoved the brittish museum data into an llm just to see what happens. However... if the app was well designed (technically, ethically, etc.), I think that it could do a decent job and would be a worthwhile idea for museums to pursue, even with the limitations of current AI. Some improvements: * AI making chain-of-reason checklist to think through outputs and double-check results * Additionally, rely more on traditionally organized info (e.g. the ai could check what the brittish museum website returns for a search on "potlatch") * Train it specifically on the ethical issues, and avoid speaking "on behalf" of people or things where it may pose issues. (a "virtual tourguide" speaking instead would already be an improvement.) (I know we may differ on what counts as "issues") anyways, to me, this is poor implementation of AI but I expect to see similar, much improved, projects in the coming years, probably from many museums as well.

    • @NirvanaFan5000
      @NirvanaFan5000 Місяць тому

      p.s. as far as the ethics of using brittish museum data - if it's for non-profit use, then I think that's great. If for private profit - well, not so black and white.

    • @professorpeachez
      @professorpeachez Місяць тому

      Personally, I think there is too much to fix. The foundation of the project seems inherently flawed, and I don't think the Living Museum can recover from it. It's like trying to fix the kitchen sink on a house with a severely cracked foundation. Tear it down and start over.

    This app is ultimately not actually intended to be educational, is the thing. This isn't Jonathan Talmi's day job. He literally isn't allowed to use this data and monetize it according to the British Museum license. This is a toy that Jonathan Talmi built to impress other people who are already in the AI space with how good Jonathan Talmi is at AI stuff. It's a way for him to position himself as an AI influencer and possibly to get a high-paying position at an actual funded AI company. It hasn't worked, as far as I can tell? He hasn't exactly blown up on Twitter. But that was almost certainly the intent. He doesn't care if a single normal person ever uses this, and the only reason it's museum-related is that the data was available.

    I'm all for new ways to get people interested in museums, so if someone wants a collection of images of yellow jugs & that's their gateway into what else they can find in a museum, sure. But. Is this really the best way? 😬 A lot goes into curation & display. I recently went to the Wadsworth Athenaeum museum and had a blast. In a room full of mostly 19th century American paintings (think: lots of landscapes), there was a grouping of three paintings which made me mentally applaud whoever arranged them. At first glance, they were three similarly sized & shaped landscape paintings. A closer look at the one in the middle, Martin Johnson Heade's Gremlin in the Studio, made me burst out laughing. Kudos to whoever arranged them like that. The problem with seeing things kind of out of context or not arranged in an edifying fashion is that you miss a lot of what's really going on.
