Hello everyone and welcome.
I typically post videos about the Ontario Building Code. More are coming (I'm thinking about structural design of Part 9 buildings and less boring versions of my current videos😝...).
You are welcome to propose ideas for videos and topics in a comment. Or here (shorturl.at/iloF6), it's 100% anonymous.
Take care and be well.

Hi Francesco, Thanks for the video. So the N/A means we have a zero hour FRR fire separation? It has to be a fire separation (smoke seal) with no fire rating? The new 2024 code has a dash line in lieu of the N/A which I assume is the same thing.
Ontario builders should be sued into bankruptcy. Fact. Ontario is a wetland. Average humidity 65%. Mold is a issue. Over 80% of homes have mold . Many homes are moldy before they are even built. Natives sued Canada over this and won. Humidity outside should not go inside Cold air meets warm air u get moisture. Wood and paper drywall is organic. Ontario should be kicked out of Canada for the scams and fraud they allow. Complicity isnt a good thing. Max spores count by Health Canada 1000 spores per meter cubed. Most places fail Which explains the anxiety depression mental health issues allergies and immune problems. Ontario building code is a joke and is criminal. But the ppl are mentally effected by mold which lowers iq which is clear and apparent. What a joke. Onterrible is a joke. 80 liberal MPs a liberal province which has no morals. Enjoy ur mold. Hi Professor, I just started my building code exam journey and using the 2024 building code. I noticed that the example listed in this videos is no longer applied to 2024 building code. The Group D is now 3.2.2.56 - 65 and there is actually no Any Height Any Area anymore. There is only Any Height Any Area Sprinklered as 3.2.2.56. Does this mean for those building the sprinkler is a must now as per the new building code?

You are absolutely right; I came from South America and the 1st storey is the storey above the main/ground floor. Great videos by the way!
Hi Francesco, Your videos are very insightful and very helpful when navigating the building code. I would appreciate some clarity when building a triplex or fourplex as this type of built form is gaining a lot of traction in our cities and hopefully this subject of interest would be covered in one of your next videos. Would a triplex or fourplex be governed by part 3 or part 9 or a combination of both since a house can meet the requirements of part 9 with respect to height(3 stories), bld area(less than 600m2) and group c (residential)major occupancy? What will be the type of construction be and how to determine under which section of the OBC--combustible or non combustible? Under Part9 Div B Table 9.10.14.5 non-combustible construction is required with 10% or less unprotected openings of exposed building face and would table 9.10.14.4 apply vs table 9.10.15.4. Under Part 3 Div B Table 3.2.2.47 Group C 3 storey Residential is permitted to be of combustible construction which contains dwelling units. Under part 9 the definition of house was revised to include an individual dwelling unit in the house in other words 2 in total. Since the number of units will exceed 2 would that make it a small building under part 3? Thank you in advance
@@danielvincani2491 Hi Daniel, terrific comment. I think this would make a great video. The short answer: can use Part 9 as long as 3 storeys or less AND the vertical fire separations separating adjoining townhouses divide the townhouses into areas less than 600 m2. Also, always check with local authority having jurisdiction, their rules may differ and/or be more stringent

Hello. Would you mind to suggest any courses/books which I can use to pass BCIN exam? I am trying by myself but it is quiet confusing. I am looking to get BCIN for General legal and small buildings.
Hello Nadeem, long answer in three parts: (1) SELF STUDY, (2) COURSES, and (3) MY EXPERIENCE... (1) SELF STUDY You may find good use from the self-study training manuals published by George Brown College (link 1 below) or the OBOA (link 2 below). I've also heard from others who used the study manuals from ORDERLINE (link 3 below), and they liked them. Link 1: coursepacks.sohobusinessolutions.ca/ Link 2: v0.oboa.on.ca/cgi-bin/orders/?op=category&c=Training%20Manuals Link 3: www.orderline.com/exam-prep/bcin The manuals in Link 1 and 2 are the same manuals. (2) COURSES There are courses based on these manuals, which you can find through George Brown College ( coned.georgebrown.ca/courses-and-programs/subject/building-code ), the OBOA (v0.oboa.on.ca/cgi-bin/courses/ ), or ORDERLINE ( www.orderline.com/exam-prep/bcin ). I have not tried any of these courses, but others have found them helpful. (3) MY EXPERIENCE When I studied for the BCIN exams, I did self-study and I used the training manuals published by George Brown College and the OBOA (link 1 or 2 above, it's the same manuals in both). I studied approximately 20-25 hr/week for up to five weeks before writing one exam, and I only studies one for one exam at a time. IMPORTANT: The current manuals in Link 1 and Link 2 are for the 2012 edition of the OBC. Link 3 contains manuals that are already updated for the latest edition of the OBC. Sometime in 2025 the new manuals will be published for Link 1 and Link 2 to conform with the 2024 edition of the OBC. I hope this helps. 💪
Thank you for the videos, they are really very helpfull😊
Hey Francesco I've been enjoying your videos and I was wondering if you could point me to where exactly in the OBC that it specifies the difference between a roof joist and roof rafter? We often design shed roofs or lean toos on the side of sheds and garages. These lean-too roofs as they are commonly called do not get any ceiling surface installed but also do not have an attic space or ceiling joists so they behave structuraIly more like a roof joist. We usually size them as roof joists but I've always been curious where the code specifcially parses these 2 members out. Thanks.
Hi there! I'm glad these videos help. It is not obvious where to find this information in the OBC. You have to look under the explanatory notes in Volume 2, Appendix A, article A-9.23.4.2. "Span Tables for Wood Joists, Rafters and Beams". This note comprises six or seven paragraphs of text, and the difference between roof joist and roof rafter is identified in the first paragraph or so. I hope this helps!
@@FrancescoTangorra Thanks Francesso I often forget about the useful clarficiations in Appendix A. It would be worth it for me to have a browse through it to see what other usefull tidbits of info I can glean from it. Thanks Again. Btw my employee Thomas Szeto who was a student of yours says hi.

Hello my friend. Access to homework, course notes, drawings, etc is for student in the course. I explain it a bit more here ( ua-cam.com/video/JSxS0tLuhmY/v-deo.html ) I hope that makes sense. Have a lovely day.
Thanks for your videos! Couple of questions, I just started studying for this and will be going for the 2024 version. How long do I have to wait for the workbooks and such to update for exam prep in your opinion? Also, when you studied, did you read the relevant section of the code cover to cover, page by page? how do you retain all that information in your head? I know that this is an open book exam, but still...
Hello Maryam! Apologies, this is a long answer... Sometime in 2025 the new study manuals will be released with all the updates. In my opinion, unless you are ready to write an exam now (and you've already booked), it would be best to wait for the release of the new manuals because they will include all the relevant changes with the 2024 OBC. No date has been provided for the release of the new manuals beyond "in 2025". About studying, here are some methods that worked for me: (1) I studies for one exam at a time. So I would not study for another exam until after I had written the previous one. This way, when I wrote a specific exam, I was only thinking about the content of that exam. I would repeat this for each exam. (2) When I decided on what exam to write (I think I started with Legal 🤮), I would book the soonest available date for my planned exam, and then I would study for one full month for that one exam. On average I would study 20-25 hr per week, or so, for each exam. Typically I would study 100 hr for each exam. That does not mean it will take you that long to study. I am unusually slow when learning something new, so I have to take my time with new concepts. (3) I used the study manuals when I wrote my BCIN exams and anytime I was directed to a specific portion of the OBC, I read that portion fully. If it wasn't referenced in the manual, I did not read it. (4) My recommendation: when you study for any of these exams, use whichever version of the OBC you will use during the exam (hard copy or digital). So, if you plan on using the hard copy, study with the hard copy. If you plan on using the digital copy, study with the digital copy. I hope this helps a little! 🤞
