Turning a tabletop yarn swift into a vertical yarn swift zero cost
I always wanted a vertical yarn swift but also couldn't justify the price of getting one. So I decided to try making my current swift vertical without spending any money. #weaving #knitting #yarn

Drop spindle with bobbins?! Yes Please
Переглядів 495 місяців тому
Something that's brought joy back to using a drop spindle. A spindle with bobbins is an amazing idea. Now, I can try different fibers without losing what progress I made on another spinning fiber. when you're all done spinning, just simply take the bobbin off place it on a lazy Kate and easy removal of the yarn you spin. This has honestly made me want to spin again with a drop spindle. While bo...

Very nice 👍
One more thing: I thought there needed to be enough dobby bars hitched together so that they'd drape over the edge and gravity would help them feed. Four bars? Really? And eight work too?
@SojournerDMR using more than 4 bars would require the chain guide. I made another video explaining and demo how i do the 4 shafts. ua-cam.com/video/h-qI287E9Co/v-deo.htmlsi=xSVokCq_cGO4F3kr
I knew there is a solution... a simple one actually.... just couldn't get my mind wrapped around it! Thank you.
Yes, I did that a few months ago when I ran out of heddles on a couple of shafts on my Magic Dobby; actually that works for any multiple shaft loom. When I did it I threaded from the back, using shafts 23 and 24 since it was easier to see those back shafts. Now I have a question: it looks like you're mixing tabby sections with twill sections across the warp. Are you finding that you're having any issues with differential take-up of the warp since tabby tends to spread threads out and twill tends to kind of stack them up?
I didn't notice any difference the tabby sections are so small
I love color combs from ArtClub! I’ve gotten several of them for various projects.
That turned out beautiful! It reminds me of Elsa’s dress from Frozen. Also, I love your enthusiasm, so I subscribed!
Thank you for this great review. I’m seriously thinking of getting one. Is this heavy to treadle, please, and is the shed big enough to weave on comfortably? Dee
@bobbinmad thanks sorry for the late response. No it's not heavy to treadle but when using all 24 shafts, it could require a little more push. The lever also works if it feels too heavy my treadle. The shed is over an inch and works well is a low profile shuttle. I use a leclerc shuttle just fine.
Thank you for sharing your experience!
Practice this. You did a better job than I did on my first go-around! I've gotten better by doing it and doing it and doing it. I'm a new subscriber! Thanks for your videos! 😊
Lovely thank you. You gave me some great ideas and much more 😊
Thank you for the very good video. You’ve answered a lot of questions for me.
Definitely do not put all crafts in one video. Specificity is good.

Can you show back of loom ? I’m having trouble with mine adjusting to next bar with the handle. I might try the foot peddle
Are you having trouble with the selector and it's not going to the next bar?
Are you willing to share your Yarn source? Possibly Price?
Yes. I purchased it from Yarnorama.com brand Maurice brassard cotton and cotton boucle price range from $13-15 each.
ohmygoodness I am 100% doing this on my loom! Thanks for the idea!
Thank you so much I was wondering whether to get this since the megado is so expensive. I think I'll take the plunge!
Holà Gracias Me podrías decir lo que piensas de ese telar electrónico . Que tanta tela puedes hacer ?
Hi Katia I don't have the electric dobby for the loom. So I can't review it. As far as how much warp and fabric it can hold, when the beams are moved to the stand you can have a much larger warp. Not sure of the exact maximum it depends on the yarn size used. But from my experience it can hold up to 10 yds. Hope this helps
I work with both. I use the lever, push it down. I hold the lever down with the treadle. After I have made the shot, I let the treadle spring up and the lever goes up automatically. I don't lock it in place.
That's a fabulous idea. It can be a little tough sometimes pushing down the treadle to lift 12 or more shafts at once.
Nice pattern
Is the fiber you are using old? Sometimes, older fibers can loose strength over time.
These were purchased earlier this year from a weaving shop as new. So I hope they weren't old.
Thank you very much for this demo. I’ve never seen a dobby loom close up like you have shown. Happy weaving!
I'm curious about your standing beater. There were some good shots of it in this video. It looks like the attachments for mounting it are there... but you've attached it closer to the upright on the stand. Can you tell me a little about this?
Yes, when I'm warping and threading, I move it out of the attachments and put it closer to the stand, making the top of the beater lower than the front beam so I can reach through easier.
@@LetsPlaywithYarn Ah, that makes sense. Glad I asked as I may end up buying a standing beater. Thank you!
dankeschön. Ich hatte nicht viel über diesen Webstuhl gefunden. Ich habe auch so Einen. Will mir gerade auch die Standlade anschaffen und bin gespannt
Hi, the problem you were having with the fiber splitting and spinning down one side rather than across the width of the fiber is related to how you hold the fiber, not how you draft it. When spinning short-forward, or worsted, hold the fiber loosely in the non-drafting hand with palm facing up and thumb at the top. Move your thumb back and forth across the fiber as you draft (there is no need for the thumb to press hard on the fiber, keep it fairly loose.) You will discover that the fiber you pull forward as you draft will come from directly next to your thumb. A slight shift of you drafting hand will then pull fiber from the opposite side of your thumb, but your fiber hand thumb really does the bulk of the work. Hope this helps.
😮 It helps alot. Thank you very much. The method is so simple that my overthinking couldn't see it. 😂
@@LetsPlaywithYarn None of us see it until we are taught. LOL
24 hours and no one's seen this masterpiece?!
Oooo.... Love your kick wheel. \(^-^)/
Love the idea of the carabiner clips. The bulb shaped shower curtain rings might work as well. For the heddle holder, I’m wondering if you could find a tassel maker that would work. Or, I have seen a board with 2 dowels used that you can find listed on places like Etsy as a heddle maker.
The heddle maker from etsy has been in my cart for months 🤣. Maybe I'll finally buy it and see how to use it when the cardboard breaks. Thanks
@@LetsPlaywithYarn I just realized I have the perfect (albeit a little on the large side) thing in my wool room. I have a peg loom, LOL. Just need the caribeaners.

Hello, many thanks for this very detailed intro to this loom that I have been slavering over! I have one question though How noisy is the mechanical version of this loom? do you have some video in which you are using the loom without the usual background music? Anyway, thank you very much for this nice video!! Enjoy Best, Adi
ua-cam.com/users/shortsaaU-UwfvfEs?feature=share. This video has just me talking about double with, but you can also hear the noise that the loom makes. There's not a lot of noise for the mechanical dobby. Most of the noises come from the lever hitting the frame, shafts returning down, or the beater falling back. To me, that is just typical loom noises. Thanks
thank you again for this video; indeed, the noise is acceptable Bye🙂
I find that my Magic Dobby is a quiet loom to weave on.
This is a great detailed look at your work. Thanks for sharing.
I also bought an electronic magic dobby a few years ago, but it often lift up the wrong thread. I felt it was a programming problem, I really regret not buying a mechanical one at that time, I felt mechanical loom may less easy to cause problems.
At times the mechanical dobby will lift my previous picks because shafts didn't return to full rest but not often
I have a small Facebook group, and someone there also has the electric dobby and is having problems with it. Since I don't have the electric version, do you think you could maybe give tips on it? m.facebook.com/groups/926302815269279/ Thanks
I… don’t understand… this looks like magic to me. Oo How does this work? I don’t even really know what I’m watching. How did it end up a long strand when it looks like hair or something. Oo
Thanks for watching! The long strand is roving, which is a long bundle of fibers to be spun into yarn. After blending together fibers and colors on the board, I used a diz to pull some fibers through, push it back to the board, and pull again as I move across the board. Honestly, it felt like magic to me. 🙂
@@LetsPlaywithYarn How do they stick together like that? Oo
@ChaoticAngelKitten I'm not sure if this answers your question, but roving fibers are sort of netted together, and like you said like hair, but very much smaller and finer.
@@LetsPlaywithYarn ok so they’re all just little bits of fibre stuck together and not like strands and they cling together as you pull them through. Do I got it?
@ChaoticAngelKitten I guess I would say more like bundled together since it can be pulled apart easily. They are combed to be in the same direction and since they are so close together when pulled it's easy to gather more through the diz and the length of each individual fiber for what I was using was about 2 inches.

Stretcher is for keeping the width that is at the reed. For you it is 28", not 27 1/4". Try to watch some you tube video on how to set the temple.
Great,I love the music.
I was sad about the music because I wanted to hear the noise of the eel. I have never owned an electric but have had several antique wheels and modern wheels. I am wondering if I can replace the feeling of a traditional wheel with one of these.
The wind picked up a bit, and my rooster was crowing right being me, so I put music in. The created has a channel here, and here is a link to his video on noise levels. ua-cam.com/video/ORVRg-ugdsI/v-deo.html I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@@LetsPlaywithYarn thank you very much. If you even find a louet ‘hatbox’ spinning wheel please reach out. Desperately looking.
I’m learning so much about dobby looms from you. Thanks!

Hello again, I have one more question. If I weave with so many shafts, it is hard to treadle. I have tried out to find a solution, but it am not satisfied with it. What do you think about the hardness of the treadling? Weaving is hard feetwork. But I don't like to use the lever.
Yes, I have noticed that the more shafts you need to lift, the harder it is to push down the treadle. When I did use all shafts, I think I lifted half of them. I definitely had to use both feet. But also, when I first got my loom, the treadle cord that came with it was too short(119cm) and made treadling very hard to almost impossible, even with adjustments knurls on the lever. I had to get a longer texsolv cord length of 146 cm. After that, treadling was a lot easier. So make sure that the cord is in the right places and if you can find a way to measure it. Hope this helps.🙂
@@LetsPlaywithYarn Please, can you make a photo from your treadle. How fare is it from the bottom up.
@Bettina Bluhm I'm not sure how to post a photo in the comments. But I measured and from the floor to the top of the treadle (like the illustration in the manual) it's 24 cm. I know it's more than the manual says, but it works just fine the way I have it. It is very easy to push the treadle down with one foot on this pattern, and the most I lift is 9 of the 12 shafts.
Hi, you are so helpfull. Thanks a lot for this video. It is so interesting for me, because I like complex weaving pattern. Now I have the plan. I have understand all your explanation. It is so simple, but I think, that anybody know this possibility. I have asked in several groups on Facebook about this problem, but nobody has an tip for me. Buy more bars, use an electronic dobby were the answers. I have asked the Louet support team because of this. No chance, no tip. You are my hero. I will share the link for this video in several groups. I hope, this is ok for you. I think so 😉. I have one more question. For me it is very difficult to see, which wooden bar is working. The big wooden knob hides my few of the number on the bar. How would you solve the problem? Best wishes from Germany, Bettina
I'm glad you found it helpful. Please share with others that they may find it useful as well. I appreciate your support.🙂 I have thought of replacing the selector knob with clear epoxy resin. To make it easier to see, but haven't put this into action yet. Right now I have just adjusted my bench (homemade) to sit a little higher to see the top of the square. Then once I see the number I know which bar is the working one. For example, when I see the bar numbered 12 on top, I know that bar 11 (to the left) is the one that is in use and working. I hope you are able to adjust your seat or use pillows. Hope this helps 👍
The cloth behind my computer was woven with just 4 bars on the magic dobby. The number isn't always 8. It depends on the pattern you choose and how many shafts are used. For example, a typical 4 shaft pattern uses 4 or 6 treadles, so just 4 or 6 bars are needed.
Do you have a tip for me. I love overshot weaving. But with the mechanical Dobby it is difficult, because of the limit of wooden bars. After every overshot follows a tabby shot. So you need so much wooden bars. Perhaps you have a solution for this problem.
Yes. This is something I wanted to do in next weaving project. When you don't have enough bars for treadling. Use the bars as treadles like a tie up. Make sure they are numbered. You won't be able to just turn and go to the next throw. Instead you will have to go to the next treadle(bar) number. Sorry I can probably explain better in video. I will do a preview of the the next project and this example.
@@LetsPlaywithYarn you are amazing.
