Hello friends and neighbors!
My wife Amie and I purchased this historic Ogden Valley Utah century old dairy farm in late summer of 2022. We're in the process of reconditioning the barns and outbuildings into a functional operation. Our hopes and dreams are to turn the upper 2.5 acres into a landscaping tree and bush farm to serve our local communities.

Hey gang! This is not the most useful installment in the John Deere 140 series. But it’s been some time since I’ve made any contribution, the thing has been out of commission for several months, and I just wanted to recap what all has been going into it lately. Please excuse the rambling on and on. I just hope that if you’re looking for some insights about how to disassemble your levers or stee...

The rear hydraulics are called rear remotes. Really Sweet find! 👍👊 I got a 140h3 from an action. Never really cheched it though. After your vid I've got to look at mine. Lol
pretty sure she said "i dont give a f**K"
😂
I live in Iowa, land of John Deere, and that combine was huge!
For REEEEEAL!!
What year 140
1973
@NewMoonRanch the sn isn't close to 54948 is it?
Thank you for that great break down between yellow deck and black deck. I’m buying 3 yellow decks tomorrow plus a 111. My current yellow deck has a bad tranny. Thank you again.
So, how did you end-up doing the throttle & choke cables? I’ve never seen those go bad on a John Deere, so it’s kind of a shame that somebody left them unsecured and chaffing against a moving part. Actually, now that I think about it, I have seen them on other machines and possiblyJohn Deere too, when they have been left outside and water gets into the cable.
I can’t exactly recall. Just ran them as anyone would I guess.
@@NewMoonRanch, Well, you said you were going to cut the one you bought in two, and I presume join them or do something to the cut ends to attach them to the controls?
Toyotas and garden tractors, subscribed haha!
I have a "Ohio Steel Sweeper 42" " If you level the bag where it almost scrapes the ground it will work alot better......... I had to play with my hitch to get it just right....... over 10 yrs old and still working............. The Company has a Top Notched Customer Service Department.
Awesome!
Worst tractor ever built... completely junk I'd take a Murray or push mower over any stx Any day !!!
😂 I appreciate your opinion! And have zero experience to dispute it! ✌🏻
Picking up a nice 400 with deck and blade Thursday ❤
😯🤩
Hi 👋 from Donald I got keep your video and I will subscribe to it , I ended up with yellow deck stx38 took good bit get it running fella left it in woods and I finally git deck back on it, but took bit finagalling out to remember it from year back and pictures on my cell phone but good thing engine runs ok 👍 and trabs works that's good tires Suck dry rotted, and new starter 😊 but otherwise it's cool 😎
Nice one! Pretty sturdy units.
Nice tractor
Isnt that a 200 series deck?
Don’t know what it came off of. 🤷🏼♂️
How much weight will that thing handle? I’m thinking about buying one for hay on my little farm
Hi! I’d say this one is pretty sturdy. When full of grass it hasn’t had any difficulty. Structurally that is. The part you might concern yourself with is the base fabric/plastic and stitching. The more it has to drag across the surface of your yard or terrain, bearing more weight, it might not last as long as you’d like. If you can, go down and see one in person before buying. 👍🏻
@@NewMoonRanch it actually looks like it would be fairly easy to put a skid plate under the bag
Nice unit, that's a keeper.
OK, got a question. On the John Deere 400 I just bought. The previous owner had it rebuilt and has been using 15 W 50 oil in it comments? He was told by the builder that he should run that oil in it but I’ve never seen a small engine run that heavy. Looking forward advice on maybe switching back to 30 weight oil Thanks
Hi there! So sorry for the delayed response! I’ll shoot ya straight here: While I have some opinions about oil weights, I’m not the best one to ask this to! I’m sure it’s been discussed extensively on all the tractor forums by guys that have been running these things for years! I, on the other hand, have only managed to blow up my 400’s Kohler engine! And must rebuild this one as well! 🤦🏼♂️
I just got a 400. Steering only to right side.. this gives me an idea what is wrong 👍👍
Heck yah! Get that stuff dialed in and you’ll be all set!
Question I have seen one for sale near where I live and was wanting to know is the maintenance on the 400 more meticulous on this mower than a heavy duty Craftsman's in this year range this year or about the same.
Whooo! 🥵 I wish I could tell ya! I don’t have any experience with them. But my basic knowledge tells me that a John Deere might take some maintenance, but every component is probably far and away better constructed and more durable, and should last longer, than some of the lesser brand models (of the same vintage). Probably better ask someone more in the know! But having a timeless John Deere is not something you’ll ever regret, because they simply aren’t making these any more!
Is it all it's forked up to be And more?
any issues with the mower working but then powering out and almost stalling the mower? Mine will work for a bit then almost stall out when I am cutting - I turn the mower off and then it revs back up again and works for couple more minutes but then it happens again - thanks
I haven’t had that issue. What sort of things have you ruled out? Belts/spindles/PTO pulleys? All rotate freely by hand? At the time of the problem occurring?
Gets home, honey, look at all this plastic I bought for 35,000 dollars !
Pshhht. Try like $58K! (backhoe included) But, considering that the value of the good ol American dollar is almost useless, I guess you could say it was a steal! 🙄🤦🏼♂️ All that said, it has been the perfect tool to rebuild this fixer upper farm. I use it almost every day around here. Have put about 270 hours on it. And enjoy every minute I’m on it! And it’s hard to put a price on that kind of satisfaction! 🤨
All alone? Looks GREAT!💪
Thanks sir!
Nooice fence
Ohhh yeaaaaaah!
Do you think it would it pick up pine cones ?
It should pick up small and regular sized pine cones. Giant pine cones, or a lawn covered in tons of them might be a challenge.
Rust-oleum "Sun Yellow" is a great match for JD Yellow. It's only 6.95 here in Florida. I actually like it better as it's just a touch deeper yellow.
Nice! I’ll keep that in mind. It probably blends better with faded paint than fresh new JD paint. If it’s the color I’m thinking of.
I need a deck shell/cover for a John Deere 400 hydraulic lawn tractor. Can anyone help? Thank you, Wanda Lehman in Maryland
Seems like there’s a lot of stuff like that on EBay.
Make the 400 , i like to see the john deere 400 working again. I have one also with the same problem. I m thinking to put another moder engine I it, vtwin
I’ll try my best! Can’t wait til the 400 is up again! 🙌🏻
The 3000 series John Deere brought me here, the livestock and land adventures keeps me here.
Thanks sir! Been glad to have ya since the start! 🫡
👍🏻
Looks like a handy tool to "store" unwanted guests...........LOL
😆👌🏻
I like the videos the random things are cool. But I do enjoy the garden tractors and the farm stuff! I've got a 1978 316K john deere the one year only 316 with a single cylinder kohler it's a glorified 300. I dig this style machine and I picked it up non running to be my mowing machine and slowly fix up. My other machines are a Case 222 I repowered and made into my snow pusher, trailer puller all around working machine. I did also just get a Cub Cadet 124 along with a parts machine for it. No real reason for having the Cubs but they are cool might someday be a replacement for my Case 222 which was a cobbled up and worn out machine when I got it. All that being said I'm a John Deere guy more then any other brand I'm finding out lol
That’s awesome! And thanks a lot for participating! I’d not turn down any Cub Cadets. I’d probably look to add just one stout rare one to the collection one day. And a Case too! Whenever I see unique ones, like vintage Wheelhorse or others, I definitely want to nab them! I’ll always be a Deere guy too, but there’s so much history and much to enjoy about all the other yard tractors!
@@NewMoonRanch oh I agree I can't turn down any they all have a rich history and each machine has its own story to tell. Like my current 316K just from what I can tell has had a rough past until I got my hands on it.
Is it only my computer? I can barely hear him at max volume.
The audio on YT video productions is always a major challenge. Probably time I stepped up my microphone game. Sorry about that. ☹️
Pretty sure that is a 46” (model 47) deck. At least looks like it from a closed frame 300 series. 54c decks didnt arrive until 4x5 or 345/355 tractors.
I’m gonna have to look into this. My understanding was it was the 54” deck. Thanks for pointing it out though! I’ll make sure! 🙌🏻
Damn sure is!! 46” deck! 🤦🏼♂️ Thanks for pointing that out!
Not only 46 in..but looks like a 200 series deck
Love the deere content man. I got a 140H3 due to your video when you first picked it up and then i got into the 400 series when you got the 400. I have now grown my collection really fast. I has a 318, 332, 400 with tiller, deck and snowblower, 420 with loader, 420 with mower deck, 430, 140H3 and 110RF. I enjoy the videos about them but it seems like you have other priorities. Ill continue to watch the deere content whenever you uploade but dont become one of those youtubers that post project videos and then they are never finished.
Ha! This project is finished! The other 2 episodes come out later today. Pretty impressive collection you’ve got there! Are you planning on restoring them, or are they in good workable condition?
Good morning from alberta
How do ya do?! 🇨🇦
@@NewMoonRanch good how about you
His tractor wasn't GREEN but we won't hold that against him.😁
Planting right after a rain pretty much guarantees your seeds will sprout and grow.
If ya get seeds in the ground before Independence Day it is probably soon enuf........every year is different.
I've seen those "Bolt On Hooks" on other channels they look great.
Easy enough to get out once you get the hang of the controls! 😃
What brand of tires are you running on the rear?
The guy I bought it from said all of the ag tires came off of a Kubota. I can look to see what they say on them the next time I see it, if they’re not visible in the videos.
Just picked up a 1978 400 with rear pto, 3 point hitch, tiller, snowblower and 60” deck for $1000!! Any chance you might be fixing it anytime soon?
Congrats!! I’m hoping to pull the engine sometime the next month or so. Right now I’m pretty close getting the JD 140 back in action and a converted 54” mower deck for yard duties in the meantime. How’s your 400 running?
@@NewMoonRanch i haven gotten it running. Im having an issue with the safety switches and starter solenoid.
After a years use. Are you still happy with it?
I sure am! Works great still. Super solid. I don’t use it super heavily, a few cleanups in the fall time. But it works well and I’m super happy with it! Just wish it was John Deere green! 😛 JD does make them, which I see for sale used in the $200-400 range. But this one is probably just as well built as those.
@@NewMoonRanch Thanks for the response! I’m having one delivered tomorrow 😊
Its really nice when your deck has a rear discharge
I have 3 JD400’s. That deck fully assembled should be over 200lbs. Nice buy.
I got mine maybe the year before and it was nowhere near 12k. Maybe 9 total with hyd hookup etc...
Right. After the utter chaos of the pandemic it’s hard to know whether to blame the rising costs on either the scarcity of materials/production, price gouging, or the plummeting value of the American dollar. Either way, it cost what it cost at the time, it sucked, and just have to eat it and keep on tractorin! 🤨🙌🏻
Pretty cool. My '95 stx38 still puts in work
I bought my John Deere 400 about three years ago from a guy in Indiana and he told me his nephew tried to drive it up a tree and the only reason it stopped. Was it lost traction because it was almost vertical the only thing wrong with it the nipples were the mainhydraulic fluid line it’s like in square shape tubing underneath or damaged fix those fired up and things been mowing great tractor. I’ve got to tell her for the rear PTO a snowblower never had any problems that I can’t fix on it. Great great tractor.
I love this thing! Hoping to get the blown engine rebuilt sometime this summer. Sadly I suspect that I let the oil run a little too low and one of the piston connecting rods blew. Only one piston moves in/out. Otherwise it’s an AWESOME tractor!
I got quoted a 2038r with backhoe, dual rear SCVs, 60d mower deck, 3rd function, AV20F grapple. Financed 84 months no interest tax emempt and $750 dollar deliver fee for 56,538 plus insurance. Does that sound reasonable?
Pretty close to what I got mine for. No grapple, but I got a Box Blade, Forks, and the Backhoe.
