Of course you can do it. Who was the idiot who said otherwise?
Well said.
I’ve just started age 45 and im addicted already
Way to get it!
I'm 62, got my black belt end of 2023, I just moved to the Philippines from Australia, never going back. I've done Martial arts all my life and I've been sick three times in 40 years. I broke my ankle about 3 years ago, over zealous young black belt, and tore my peck about 9 months before that same thing over zealous black belt, apart from that had a great run. The Philippines is awesome, last July went to a 2 week seminar with Apolo Ladra Ikali, was brilliant, during the seminar we travelled all over the Philippines and got to meet Manny Pacquiao and watch him train, bought one of his shirts, which he signed. I'm currently training at Jaguar MMA Montalban. Our coach Jeremy is currently fighting for One championship and is at a training camp in Thailand, he's fighting on the 8th of February.
Bro I love this. Thanks for sharing.
@momentumselfdefense4651 No worries brother, all the best.
Sure can...I was 62. Now 65 and blue. I also play ice hockey and race motorcycles.
Hell yeah.
Started at 39 n I love it Spent 10 years boxing never competed
Awesome brother. I love boxing too.
If someone attackes on you in street fight can you defend yourself and teach him a brutal lesson (Sorry about my English)
@ I’ll see if Mitch can respond.
I started at 39, currently 5 years into my BJJ journey. I'm still a white belt as I only get to train 1-2 days a week due to my work schedule, but I'm not worried about rank, I just enjoy the training and the community! 🎉😅😂
It’s about the journey anyway. Thanks for sharing.
but do you have to?
Great video mate, I started BJJ 7 months ago as a 50 year old and agree with everything he said. I love the community, I’m fitter, happier and enjoy every session. It’s the best
Thanks for sharing brother.
Fun fact. Cauliflower doesn't exist in that country.
I bet Cauliflower do, though 😂
58 years old blue belt here. Started 2 years ago. Gonna continue.
OSS!
50 year old brown belt, 12 years on the mats. DO NOT BELIEVE the “BJJ saved my life shtick” I *love* Jiu jitsu but it undeniably is one of the worst spots for longevity and staying pain free until you are old. It’s really hard on the body, and there’s just no way around it. People trying to rip your arms and legs off hurts
Definitely not a pain free sport.
51 here, just starting from zero. A bit scared about getting injured to be honest, but I Love it.
Congratulations. Have fun with it.
@momentumselfdefense4651 Thanks!
Whats the deal with people saying alot of injuries in BJJ as like it's unsafe to practice unless you wanna get alot of injuries???? I have 4 kids and alot of cc debt and other debts and work 7 days a week so gym now is harder to go , and I can only go to 6 am BJJ class because of work schedule...Can I safely do this or is boxing or muay thai safer??? I did krav maga for 6 months and had no injuries.
If you can do 6 am, do it. Experiences vary but overall most people are better for having trained. You can get hurt walking on the sidewalk. Nothing in life is without possible consequences.
Alright folks, here's the reality check: I started BJJ just 4 months ago, and I’m 50, so my body’s like, 'Why are we doing this again?' The techniques are ridiculously complicated to learn, and let’s not forget-apparently, you need to be made of rubber with zero existing skeletal or muscular conditions. Sorry, but that’s the truth! I’ve spent more time in pain than actually getting better. I’m seriously considering quitting because by the time I get good enough for self-defense, I’ll be too old to even remember the moves. BJJ is really for the 20- and 30-somethings. Why does it take 5-10 years to get proficient? Shouldn’t there be a martial art that doesn’t require a yoga instructor and a chiropractor? At this point, I’m thinking I’ll just carry a bat or something else….-quicker, easier, and way less flexible! LOL!😅
Lol this comment deserves 🥇
Self defence experts always seem to get in public confrontations conveniently caught on camera.
Trust me, some people have the conflicts drawn to them like a magnet. Not saying that’s the case here but I could tell you a story or two.
43 yo 1 stripe white belt. Started about 1 1/2 months ago. Always felt i was in shape and was part teflon. Lol. Joints hurt, muscles tight, and currently nursing a cracked rib off a fluke accident, pulling someone into my guard. No worries though, ilove it. I have a "decent" understanding of the game and already have the path that i want to go down as my style. That being said, how do you minimize injuries and how to recover from them faster? Or does your body just build up tolerance to it over time?
Great questions and ones worthy of a video. But here’s some thoughts. 1. Get rest on off days. 2. Start hydrated. 3. Warm up before and cool down after class. 4. Add resistance training to your regime.
Great comments. The desire to keep learning in an active way was my main motivator at 72. Now I'm soon to be 75 and feel better physically and mentally than I did when I started. The added benefits of making new, younger friends has been a great plus for me.
Thanks for sharing!

52 yo here. Find a good orthopaedic surgeon first. Thank me later.
Ouch.
Funny that you say that. During the first 3 weeks, my toes and top of my feet were on fire. Lol
@ liquid bandaid can be very helpful.
Motivating!!!
Thanks

60?
59 at this point if I recall.
As an instructor, never put yourself alone with young students. Never teach without, at least 2 c assistance. If you're training young ladies or girls, hire a female instructor to help keep you both safe and honest.
I like that.
In a perfect world, there'd be 1000 options where you could learn martial arts, and they'd all 'pass' this fairly high expectation of criteria. The reality is, often there are very few options of places to learn martial arts, and even less for a particular martial art. And I'm fairly certain most trainers/organizations would fail your list of criteria, it's unrealistic. Willing to bet even your organisation would have many trainers fail these criteria, and even then, are they even very good teachers? As a tertiary student, new to the area, I tried to find a new martial art I had not tried before. I found a couple of very reputable organisations, and checked them out. The first one, the lead coach on the day has been with the organisation for just 1 year, and no previous experience with the martial art, and sported a black belt... I just laughed and walked out (so much for being a very widespread reputable organisation, it was basically a network marketing pyramid scheme). The second was an old guy with many years experience, connected to a traditional martial arts school. He was definitely very good, a lot of experience, but a terrible teacher. He was brutally strict, expecting monastery like devotion to the art, and advanced martial arts ability in a 'new' class. I kept on looking, and finally found something that suited me. The moral of the story is, there is every flavor of teacher and martial art out there, some not always available in your area, and some just bad teachers, bad conditions, or any number of other issues. The criteria you listed would screen out a very high percentage of martial arts training (like 99%). It's just not realistic. But steps you can take to avoid child abuse are sensible. Be present, be active in the childs learning.
I can see where you are coming from with this sentiment. I don’t think the things I listed are terribly unreasonable. Too, if my kids are involved, I’m going to be very sure that I’m comfortable with the instructors, whether it is gymnastics, baseball or martial arts. I think your experience that you shared aligns with what I referenced. We just have to be mindful and intentional about where we and our kids spend time. Thanks for sharing your story.
💯
Thanks.
Any environment where adults/kids interact with a teacher/student relationship exists should be regularly examined to make sure nothing untoward is happening. Martial Arts instructor, sport coach, gymanstics, dance, music, school teacher, youth pastors. , The vast majority of adults who work in these areas are genuine and have nothing but the best intentions and best interests of their students at heart. However, no field or area is totally immune to bad actors .
Well said. Access creates opportunities.
Most messed up people I’ve known are: teachers who work with disabled kids, youth pastors/any religious leader who focuses on women or children, and medical staff that serve low-income people. Sadistic people are drawn to these positions and 9 times out of 10 they are scum bags. They want power and prestige.
I will say there are a lot of good scripts out there. The bad ones draw the most though, sadly.
@ What is a script? I think of a list of medicines issued by a doctor when I hear that. In what context are you using it? Great video btw.
Careless writing on my part. I think I meant to say teachers/coaches, and it somehow autocorrected.
@@momentumselfdefense4651 Gotta love Google and our AI overlords they also seem to know best… just like creepy MA instructors.
I wrote “always” not “also” in my above comment too. Crazy world we’re living in lol. Have a good one.
I’m here because I’m a nervous 43yr old researching should I try it. Hearing how it improved your overall composition but most importantly your mental health has convinced me to sign up
Thank you for sharing your experience!
in your early 40s you can do anything same as 20 year old. If you think you have limits at 40 then you had them at 30 as well. Aging only starts to speed up drastically around 45, on average at 44 (varies depending on lifestyle and genetics if you are healthy. active with good diet you can postpone it by some years). Starting in 40s is a breeze plenty of guys in our gym who have started in late 40s and early 50s. this video is more appropriate to 50+, but even then if you have athletic base and have kept your self in shape there is no limits really, if you have been sedentary then your joints, muscles and skeletal frame have degraded alot past 45 so better to start easy to avoid injury..
Well said.
Thanks. I thought the second one was overdone IMHO.
I guess they tried to up the ante in part two.
Will it make me gay? Well, gayer?
how to start? just be prepared to either always go light and slow or accept permanent injuries.
Decision, decisions…
Because Krav Maga effectiveness relies on partner compliance instead of sparring
Depends on where you train. Good Krav Maga should have sparring built in as part of the program.
Im 43 starting next month. My 13 year old is killing it so i cant let her keep choking me! Not to mention it's my daughter....
😂 love it
Started back in February at 54. I do 3X a week. Absolutely love it, but lifting weights and recovery days are a must.
I agreed on the resistance training aspect.
Started judo and jiujitsu at 49, love every second of it
OSS!
I started at 69. Big mistake.
Penicillin was a mistake and look how that turned out.
Just buy a Glock
OK, I'm 64 (female), in very good shape from weightlifting and boxing, BUT I am 64 and I have long white hair. (i say that because I think it makes people think I'm older than 64.) I just started BJJ - had my first 2 classes last week (on the same day). Not sure if I will keep at it since I already train Muay Thai. But it was fun, tremendous fun! However, I lost a lot of hair in my second class and dislocated my toe.
Thanks for sharing
Am 69 and did my first class today. Probably should not have, but wtf.
No one makes it out of this life alive, might as well have some fun 🤩
I appreciate Penny's willingness to stand up and defend others, but the reality is that he is tremendously lucky, from a legal point of view. As you point out, self defense law does not justify actions taken past the point of neutralizing the threat, and that's always been the problem in the Penny case. I think it's pretty clear he wasn't applying an effective choke hold for the entire six minutes, but I also think it's perfectly clear that Neely was wholly subdued throughout almost the entire encounter, and Penny did not need to choke him out at around the five minute mark. It wasn't just Penny holding him down, there were two other guys controlling him, and at least two other men standing there ready to jump in if they were needed. At the point Penny seriously applied the choke hold, nobody was in fear anymore- the crowd was standing around discussing the matter calmly while Neely was being held down. The question is this: Why was it necessary for Penny to choke Neely into unconsciousness after he and two other men had held him there for five minutes? Why couldn't they just continue to hold him indefinitely, until the police arrived? I have not heard anyone attempt to answer that question.
Good observations. I’m not sure what the correct answer is, but this is a good case study for protectors out there.
"You can't de-escalate your way out of crazy." These words are brilliant. We think that there is always a time and place for this elaborate verbal de-escalation tactic, but that isn't always the case. There sometimes just isn't time for that before someone is hurt. Excellent video, thank you!
Thank you.
Very well reasoned arguments.
Thank you.
If you are protecting me or I am protecting someone , I am not going to be thinking about the law
Hindsight is always 20/20
That''s not smart.
The guy got away with murder. His slick lawyers spun a false narrative. Again, no justice of poor and marginalized people of the USA. Penny is just another kyle rittenhouse.
Unfortunately I can’t agree. You could make the case for manslaughter, perhaps.
You can start gi in older age, but not nogi or wrestling.
I wouldn’t say “you can’t”. I’d say it’s significantly harder to start no-gi. Wrestling though…, good luck.
The take away is don't help anyone in New York City.
Thankfully not all cities and states have the same leanings when it comes to self defense.
The takeaway should be not to apply force when it isn't needed to neutralize the threat you're facing. Because that's the standard just about everywhere.
@ Thanks for your input
Thanks
You’re welcome.
I could see the negligent manslaughter charge if they guy didn't have a pulse when the police arrived.
Possible, however even that may have been hard to get, seeing how strongly everyone felt their lives were in danger. Who knows though 🤷🏽♂️
