    Now, if we could just get the North American railroads to install overhead wire electric power for their trains. India has already done this on over 90% of their main line railroads and is working towards 100% electric powered trains in just two years. Indian railways has begun operating several dedicated freight corridors with extra high wires to allow taller goods trains, including double stack container cars, to operate safely in the corridors. The dedicated freight corridors have been a huge success for Indian railways, and the Indian government is planning on building massive expansions of them over the next twenty years. India has successfully electrified tens of thousands of kilometers of railroad lines all over the country from the tops of frozen Himalayan passes to scorching deserts in Rajasthan, to cyclone prone swamps in Kerala. Electric powered trains are now a common sight in both remote villages like Khajuraho and mega cities like Delhi and Mumbai. By going all electric on its railroads, India has reduced its dependence on imported oil and its carbon emissions dramatically. In the event of war with China Indian railways will be able to keep running and support the Indian economy and military no matter how successful China is in sinking oil tankers bound for Indian ports. If India can make all of this happen, just 80 years after the British empire had completely destroyed their country, there's no good reason why insanely rich North America can't do this. Well done, India🙏 🇮🇳 jai hind

    Trains definitely haul much more tonnage at a lower cost. But they are slow to load and unload and tracks don't run everywhere. They're great for shipments that aren't time sensitive. Trucks can haul smaller amounts of cargo over short distances much faster. They are both needed to deliver goods.

    Question When did we first start using bar codes on products? Answer: "Bar codes have been around since 1963 and were introduced as a means of identifying products in commercial transactions in the 1970s. A product of the computer age, they are alphanumeric codes that are read by a laser (scanner)." Back in the 70''s while working in a small distribution warehouse for 5 variety stores I first noticed bar codes on the cardboard cases of merchandise. There were no scanners in the stores back then yet.

One says that railroads transport 40% of the ton miles in the USA, while another says that trucks transport 85% of our freight (no ton miles given in the latter). Is intermodal freight included in the stats for both modes?

  • @craigphillips3154

    I live a block away from a freight rail line. People complain about the trains all the time (people complain about everything). I even heard one person question why they don't just use trucks for all of those containers. I explained to them that those container trains are up to 2 miles long and are double-stacked. Do you really want 4 miles MORE of trucks rolling up the interstate every 30-60 minutes???? Not to mention the need for a few thousand more drivers to drive those trucks plus the added pollution? I'll take the inconvenience of occasionally having to wait 5 minutes or so for a train to pass.

    This is not true about the fuel usage. Trains ARE more efficient at moving large amounts of cargo compared to trucks. Each locomotive holds thousands of gallons of fuel, and if you're lucky you might get 1 mpg from each locomotive across flat prairies with little to no incline of the track. But 1 gallon for 1 ton 500 miles? Impossible, simple as that.

    • @craigphillips3154
      @craigphillips3154 Рік тому

      That actually would not work well at all for a variety of reasons: 1) Most truck drivers have an assigned tractor (or are an owner-operator) and they do NOT like driving someone else's truck, nor do they ever want somebody else driving their truck. Plus, most containers aren't hauled a tremendous distance once they hit the road and most of those drivers work for local companies that aren't national carriers. So you would end up with the container lines having to buy a huge number of trucks or a very limited number of drivers available to drive that "last mile". 2) That would take a huge number of trucks out of service for "x" number of days when they could be on the road making money. 3) Offloading trucks in the same way they offload vehicles from a car carrier requires every railcar to be disconnected. When you have a container train that's upwards of 2+ miles long, that is a LOT of work and time. It's MUCH quicker to pluck a container or trailer off of a railcar and leave the railcars stationary. Then they just have to drop the container on a chassis or drop the trailer on the ground and move it with a yard dog. Much quicker and a lot less work.

  • @100pyatt

    Except the train has zero emissions control on the exhaust system spewing black smoke while the modern trucks have zero black smoke and in many cities actually emit cleaner air from the exhaust than what is coming into the motor Thanks to the DPF and SCR systems that scrub all contaminants. Also to mention is that the most recent technology semi trucks are able to achieve fuel efficiencies of 400 ton miles per gallon or better when spect correctly. This is extremely close to train efficiency but with substantially better versatility and speed
