Hi Micheal, we just completed our very first Camino de Santiago Frances following exactly your 2024 itinerary and mostly stayed at the same hostels as your walk. Just wondering if you can share your accommodations for the Portuguese coastal walk and also any useful maps that we could get to prepare ourselves for the coastal walk next year, as you pointed out that the starting point from Porto lacks the yellow shell marked signs. Thanks
Here are the places that we stayed in: In Porto Apartment S Bento Walk to Labruge Casa da Praia Agucadoura Agucadoura guest house (I think that this is now permanently closed) Esposende Esposende Guesthouse Viano do Castelo Hotel Laranjeira Caminha Arca Nova Guesthouse As Marinas Talaso Atlantique Vigo Oca Ipanema Hotel Redondela El Descanso del Viajero Pontevedra Hotel Boa Vila Caldas de Reis Pension A Fonte Padron Albergue + Rooms Murgadon Santiago Hotel Windsor I would recommend the app Camino Ninja as it has excellent maps, and downloadable gps for your phone. Hope you have a great walk. As we mentioned in our videos, we would walk shorter stages if we did this walk again.
Thanks for the info.
Could not be happier I've found your channel! I will be walking the camino in may/june next year, so it's lovely to see your recent experience. I love your positivity! Cheers from Canada!🍁 (And hopefully going to visit Brisbane soon!!)
@@akemi187 Thanks for that and I hope you enjoy your Camino
You both are amazing! 30 km 👏. I am planning to walk this camino from Porto in spring 2025, but I guess I will be able to do max 20 km . Could you please write the name of hotel in Viana do Castelo? Thank you
We will aim for 18 to 20 km the next time we walk in Portugal too! We stayed in Hotel Laranjeira which we booked with Booking.com

The Camino Frances ...." just another hill."😊
Thank you for all the very useful information! Buen Camino!
@@exploringthevines5869 Thank you
Love spending my weekend watching your September October 2023 journey. Was curious why you chose to walk so many miles per day instead of breaking it up to shorter times? Look forward to watching all your other journeys and then planning my own.
@@roxyjanesmom Those long days were our mistake. We had walked similar distances on the Frances in 2022 and assumed that the coastal Camino would be similar but it turned out to be more difficult to navigate the twists and turns. Thanks for watching our videos.
Go left out of Portomarín next time. I’ve done both and Lynne’s gonna love it. Thanks for sharing. Buen Camino.
@@wayne4453 Thanks, we wondered about that. Lynne wants to know if there are flowers!
@@Michael_Matthias Yes, I recall wildflowers and possibly some lavender. The first short section is along that quiet road you saw. After that is a climb up through the forest and up top it opens up into grazing pastures. It’s a quiet 4.5 km and I never saw another pilgrim on that stretch.
We're thinking about doing the route starting in A Guarda, so your videos have been super helpful! What time of year were you there?
@@ESLteacherbobpdx We walked late September into October when we got to Santiago. Thanks for watching.
Thank you both for sharing this most helpful, in depth, look of the coastal route. Enjoyed all your videos. God Bless ❤
@@MN-gv5hz Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
I currently live in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and was drawn to your channel as I would like to do the Camino de Santiago next year. So surprised to see a video about Coolangatta! I lived there in 1974. It sure has changed. I’m enjoying your videos.
That is a coincidence. All the best for your planned walk.
Micheal, You two have a wonderful show. I’m really enjoying it! Do you folks book all your accommodations in advance? Is there a certain app or book you are using for accommodations or is it your experience in traveling the Camino in the past? I’m doing the same trip next August-September Thanks, Randy
Yes, we use Booking.com where we can. If you pay a little extra, most times you can book and cancel without charge a few days before the booking if you need to. We also use email or WhatsApp for places that don't use Booking.com.
thx 4 sharing, did this in April 2019 in the snow,
Gotta love snow! Thanks for your comment.
Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your great journey across spain on the camino,❤
Thank you, much appreciated

@@mommydearest237 Thank you. Have a great walk.
Greetings Michael and Lynn. Thank you so much for sharing your Camino experience. My husband and I will be doing the Camino Frances in April and May 2025. Did you use a travel planner to book your rooms. We have no idea of the process and would like your opinion on how best to ensure accommodations. Thank you again for your wonderful channel. Best wishes to the two of you!
The last few times that we have walked, we booked all of our accommodation before we left. It was a mix of Booking.com and contacting the places directly by email. We did this as we now prefer double rooms with our own bathroom, in albergues if we can, and we know how far we can walk each day and where we want to stay. In 2022 we noticed that in a number of the small hotels where we stayed there were people from tour companies, so before we left for 2023 in Portugal we got quotes from one of the big tour companies, just for accommodation, not for meals or baggage transfer. The quote came back about 3 times what we paid by booking directly. I did the same thing for the Camino Frances and the same result. So, you do pay a premium for letting someone else do the booking, but on the positive side there are no hassles for you to do the bookings. On our first Camino in 2014 we only booked St Jean and just stayed in albergues sleeping in bunk beds and it was fine. Jump forward 10 years and the Camino is much busier in April/May than 10 years ago, but my observation is that it is the double rooms that appear to be booked ahead, and you generally can get an albergue bed if you book ahead a day or so. Also, there are many new places opening up each time that haven’t found their way into the guide books yet. Apps like Camino Ninja are pretty good at listing what accommodation is available in each town and village. Many places respond to phone and whatsapp requests even weeks ahead. If you want, I can send you a list pf places where we stayed the last couple of walks, but it will include a number of long (30 km) stages. Hope you have a great walk.
Are you sharing where you stayed ? In labrudge ?
Yes, no problems. Casa de Praia Guest House which I booked on Booking.com
Hi Michael and Lynne, although we have been walking Caminos since 2006 we have never conquered the problem of what to cover our packs with or bag them when they are checked luggage. We cable tie the zips ( at least you know if someone has accessed you pack) tighten all our straps as best we can, ensuring no errant straps I still dread the thought collecting our packs minus a strap or two. Do you put your packs in some sort of bag for the flight? I dream of a carry on but it’s difficult with poles.
@@RobertHenwood-dx2sd Yes, we put our backpacks into travel bags like the one in the link. They fit our poles too. We then put them into a bag that we send to Santiago to pick up when we finish our walk. www.anacondastores.com/camping-hiking/packs-bags/duffle-bags/mountain-designs-expedition-duffle-70l/BP90140981
Hi Michael and Lynne. Thank you for documenting your Camino, I’ve really enjoyed watching all the episodes over the last week or so. I was due to do this myself at about the same time but I’ve had to delay by a year and will start out from SJPDP on 24 April next year. I can’t wait. I do hope the weather will be a little kinder then though. 👍 Thanks, Mark

@@grinninggnome Have a great walk!
At about 1:59 there's a sign for Pereje ( which I think Michael misprounces). But that's not why I write. Rather, the defaced sign is just one of MANY examples that you'll see beginning as you near the western border of Castille and Leon and even more frequently after you enter Galicia. I saw this particular one in June 2024, and you'll see it in the August 2019 image on "street view" on Google Maps (in that picture it has been hand-altered to "Perexe," which I imagine is either a Gallego or Leonese spelling). When you get into Galicia, where all signs seem to have been changed into the Gallego language, it's not the language that's being hand-changed, but rather the format in which the language is expressed. For example, in Galicia you'll see the signs with the name of the Miño River (and other words that have a tilde) changed to the Portuguese-style spelling of Minho. I imagine it's some sort of a barely-below-the-surface culture war.
G'Day Michael & Lynne - greetings from Canberra. Just finished watching your vlogs on the Portuguese camino. We are only a fortnight away from our Portuguese camino. What would be a good way to ask you a few questions away from this oublic interaction? Thanks Singh
@@SinghGarewal I think if you reply just to me through the UA-cam handle then I can answer any questions
@@Michael_Matthias- Thank you, Michael. Correct me if I am wrong - you apperared to have stayed in B&B or small private hotels only during your camino. We have not made any reservations and will commence our camino from the Porto Cathedral on 14 Sep. Do you think it is absolutely necessary to make overnight accommodation bookings ahead or one can manage to find place on the go? And would you mind sharing the list of your accommodation places that you used on the camino? Of course, if you do not wish to share that would be fine too. Thanks Singh
Thanks for sharing your journey. Perfect for us as we are due to set off on 23rd April next year. What the weather will be like, and what we need to bring clothes wise, is our main area of concern. Although as hardy Poms we're well used to rain and cold!

You should have stuck to the litoral. Its flat and all paths . No boardwalks and no sand
Our aim was to stick as close to the coast as we could. In a number of places we were walking on board walks but they ran out and were in a poor state. Did you mean that we should have walked the Brierley 'coastal' route?
