OMBRA MAI FU (Live) | #233
This was one of the songs I did for my singing jury, which you can find in the playlist listed at the end of the video. I hope you enjoy! :)
Also, I did not include subtitles because the singing is all there is and it's just about a guy obsessing over a plane tree.

This song is DEFINITELY one of my favorites to listen to. A fabulous vocalist. It's unfortunate that the movie studios were responsible for getting her hooked on amphetamines. They wanted her to film at their pace and schedule, not by her true abilities. Ruined her life and she died way too soon from drug/alcohol abuse. I'm glad reactors are watching her so she isn't forgotten. If you do film reactions, "Meet Me In St. Louis" (1944) is one of her best.

    Wikipedia lists Faouzia as a coloratura mezzo-soprano and that seems to be the general consensus, but keep in mind these are classifications for classical opera singers. They were introduced also to protect opera singers from overstraining their voices as they have to project unamplified over an orchestra. A pop singer uses amplification and pop songs often span across these voice classifications, so it is not really possible to classify a pop singer cleanly into the opera classifications.

    • @MadMusician
      @MadMusician Місяць тому

      @@JohnnyByeYm True that classifications are more for Opera singers to protect their voices and it mainly makes sense in that context and genre alone, but equally as important human beings (like myself) LOVE finding labels that fit certain qualities of things. I like the coloratura mezzo-soprano label A LOT because it emphasizes her specific comfortability with her low-mid range while acknowledging her SUPER high extension closer to the top of her range. I like classifying voices for all genres because it grounds the different qualities in a certain voice into an easy-to-understand, all-encompassing, foundational term that is accurately defined by those qualities.

    There's a story that actor Van Heflin and his wife attended a party where Judy Garland also was. At some point, late in the night, Garland was persuaded to sing and she just went on singing for the rest of the party. Heflin's wife kept reminding him that they had to leave because he had an early call, but he was transfixed and refused to leave. All the way home, she said, he just kept commenting about the wonder of that night, saying that you only get to experience a night like that once.

      @MadMusician Місяць тому

      @@CarloRodriguez10 This is an example Mariah Carey's Emotions whistle notes. ua-cam.com/video/h4abd6m71hk/v-deo.htmlsi=rSWUhb9cXZ_YQ75U If you look up her upper vocal range demonstrated in James Gordon's carpool karaoke sesh, you'll hear her hit similar notes but not with whistle. Whistle is much lighter, sometimes more airy like here, sometimes more squeaky like you'll hear in Mariah Carey's newer version of Oh Santa. But overall, whistle is a much lighter and tighter sound while Christina's attempts at such notes are still in head voice stretched paper thin and it doesn't even sound that great compared to true whistle because it's fuller, heavier, and can be a form of strain if one is not careful.

    Do you know the acapella group HomeFree? Tim Foust is their bass, and he's normally in the 1's and 2's. But some of my favorite songs from him are when he's in his in his higher range. (Edge of Glory, My Maria). Maybe Faouzia falls into mezzo because of where she can comfortable go down to. Even though she is strong in the soprano range. IDK and honestly, I don't care. Her flexibility is very impressive to me. And she's really improved her dynamics and control, especially over her vibrato, in the last year. Hoping this 'semester' in China pays off for her career wise. Seems like it is.
