Which was FASTER? Chain-piecing OR One-at-a-time scrappy blocks? My experiment results.
Переглядів 55114 днів тому
Mum and I are both making a square-in-square scrappy quilt. I make my blocks one-at-a-time. Mum makes her blocks with the chain-piecing method. So I put both methods to the test - which method is faster?? Both methods start with 2 inch strips - whatever fabrics you have left over from other projects. My finished blocks are 4 inch squares, while mum's are slightly larger at 4 1/2 inch squares. D...
I made some towels for my dad! 😁 DIY appliqué gift for men

Dad loved his present - watch his reaction at the very end of the video. These two towels took around half a day to make. You will need some sort of double-sided fusible web for the appliqué process. So usually, I make videos about quilting. If you like the sound of that, go check them out. Also, come say hello on Instagram @ rachael_time_to_sew #sewing #applique #appliqué #diycrafts #diygift #...

Discussing design idea for themed art quilt competition | quilting techniques for art quilts
Переглядів 542 місяці тому
I made this art quilt to enter the Australasian Quilt Convention competition in 2019. The theme that year was 'Magic'. This quilt depicts a scene from William Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', where King Oberon of the fairies and his servant Puck apply love potion to various characters. I thought I would share this art piece as the Queensland Ballet is currently dancing 'A Midsummer Ni...
Outside my comfort zone - a quilting technique we SHOULD be doing PLUS a new binding method
Переглядів 2 тис.2 місяці тому
Time to revisit a basic quilting skill that I should be doing more regularly - tying off my quilt threads and burying them into my quilt. To practice this skill, I finally tackle a UFO that has been sitting in my cupboard since lockdown - the beginnings of a paper-pieced hexagon table-runner. After the quilting is complete, I try out a different method of binding which I saw on Instagram - a qu...
Easy to sew - quilted pillowcase WITH ZIP! A sewing tutorial.
Переглядів 2452 місяці тому
These European pillowcases turned out even better than I imagined! The quilted front is divine with the flying geese quilt block sewn in black and white fabrics. The process for adding a zip to the back was super easy and looks so professional. You can easily create this project as well - yes! Even beginners! These two pillows were created to match a quilt I recently made (and filmed for UA-cam...
Last step - hand sew your quilt binding for the PERFECT quilt edge.
Переглядів 5253 місяці тому
I love to finish off my quilts with a hand-sewn binding. There is something special about relaxing on the couch in front of your favourite tv show after weeks/months of making your quilt. Slowing the process right down and having the whole quilt sitting in your lap is just so satisfying - can anyone else relate to that? In this video we complete the binding process we began in the previous vide...
Binding a quilt - step by step tutorial
Переглядів 4523 місяці тому
In this video, I show you the exact method I use to bind my quilts. I make my binding from 2 1/2 inch strips of quilting fabric. I join them with a diagonal seam to reduce bulk and then iron in half lengthways. After trimming the quilt to size, I attach the binding with a 1/4 inch seam. In this video, I also run you through the method of joining the binding ends together on a diagonal before fi...
How to sandwich your quilt using your dining table - a quilt tutorial
Переглядів 2,5 тис.3 місяці тому
It is such a great feeling when you finally finish a quilt top! But then.... oh you have to quilt it! In this video I show you how to layer your backing, wadding and quilt top easily using your dining table - no more getting on the floor. For this quilt, I bought a second-hand sheet to use as my backing. Not only is this cheaper than using quilt fabric, it also makes for an incredibly soft back...

You got SO MUCH done today! What an inspiration you are!😀🤗👍💪
Why thank you Joy, yes, it was a very productive day!!
Love it. Won't your block turn out to 5 inches when sewn?
Hi Lisa, sorry, did I not say I trim them down to 4 inch. A little bit of wastage but as some of my centre scraps are smaller than the 2 inch, the centre strip is often thinner. Also, I only cut the strips to make it easier for me and my ‘scraps’ are bigger bits of unused fabric. Could use smaller scraps for whole block. Block can be any size you want as long as you are consistent 😀
Cherish this time when you can multi task so efficiently. You’re an alien and I’m jealous. Lol
Haha 😜 thanks Donna
you go girl!!! looking good!!!
Thank you Judy!!
Do whichever method makes you happy. Happiness is better than speed.
I love this sentiment!! ☺️ and since making that video, I continue to make them one at a time.
Fantastic 🎉 ✂️💯 you had a huge day and got so much done and the dinner was sooo 😋delicious. Xxx
Thanks mum 😘
In my case I do it to save wasting thread rather than worry about saving a few minutes. I use it as a mental challenge to myself to see how seldom I have to break thread . So speed isn't the only reason we might do it.
Good point. And thread is expensive.
Pink is a neutral! 😂
😂😂 yeah, well especially light pink
When chain piecing, you could save several minutes by not clipping the blocks apart each time you add a piece. You could leave the first two pieces chained while sewing the third piece of each block, cut them apart and chain piece adding the fourth piece to the center strip, then turn the chain around and add the final strip to the other side. Clip the completed blocks apart, and you're done. I do love the fabrics you've chosen. Such a bright, happy assortment! The quilts will be lovely!
Oh that’s a bit clever! Thanks for the tip. Yes, both our quilts will be very bright! ☺️
Great gift idea. What a thoughtful daughter you are. Just in time for Father's Day 😊.
Well, He’s a great dad!
Hi!! I must say, depending on what you’re trying to accomplish….. 😊 5 minutes adds up! 😂 But I would cut my like lengths in layers, and turn out more pieces at a time when cutting. I love the streamlining of chain piecing. And we all need to do what brings the most JOY! 🤗
Yes, that would make it quicker! 😊 thanks for sharing
I agree with you about the binding, the ends need to be attached.
Definitely agree 😁
Ahhh this is so cute. ❤
☺️ thank you
This is a great gift idea! New subbie here. Take care
Thanks so much! 😊 welcome
cut more in one go :)
Yeah… that would work, wouldn’t it!?
What fun. I loved doing this with you Rach. I can’t wait to see your 100 blocks in a day challenge. Can you do it ?????🪡🧵✂️😘
Challenge accepted!
Rachel, hello from Chicago. Thank you for sharing this happy gift making. Glad to have found another sewing and quilting channel. I could not hear you very well though. It was fun to see your dad open the gift. I think early in their marriage my mom knit golf club covers for my dad. She also back in the day sewed shirts, with a fish print fabric, for my dad and his dad. Many decades later I made my dad a fish shirt too.
Hi Carol, thanks so much for taking the time to comment. I have also made my dad a shirt! 👔 the fabric had Pythagoras theory maths drawings all over it because he loves maths - it was such cute fabric. Noted RE sound, I’ve been meaning to invest in a mic, so your comment is helpful. ☺️
Love the bunting!
Ooh yes! Thanks Julie
Very needly done.
Thank you, it’s easy with the iron-on fusible web!
Thanks Rachael for sharing
You are welcome! 🤗
Love it, l am from USA.
Hello from Australia! Thank you ☺️
Oh my gooooosh Wachael. So good.
Thanks Amy ☺️
Oh Rach. My new golfing towels are amazing. I think my golf buddies will be placing orders. You are so clever. Love Dad xxx
😘 glad you like them, hopefully they give you good luck for a hole-in-one!
They are perfect Rach and Dad loves them. You did such a professional job. ❤️💙❤️💙❤️
😘 💙❤️💙❤️💙❤️
Your work is beautiful thank you for sharing
Thank you Linda!
I’m not sure that you have a self healing mat. That is what you need. I think “just get it done quilts” has an episode about mats and blades. Your blade should last a lot longer. Also you can get stickers that you put on your acrylics that make them not slip on your fabric.
Oh thank you Cate! I’ll go check out that video.
What fun you had 😊 I watch LHH with Kate. Your quilts will be lovely.😊😊
Thank you! 😊
The titanium blades are fantastic, cut so easily and last so much longer. Catching the blade on the edge of the ruler will blunten your cutter quickly.
Ooh, ok, thanks for this tip, I’ll look out for them. And yes, I do catch the ruler from time to time.
✌🏻♥️
I gave a thumbs up before I watched !!! ✌🏻♥️
🤣
✌🏻♥️
Also subscribed ❤❤❤
Rachael, I just watched you and your Mom for the first time. You two are SOOOOO LOVELY !!!! I am looking forward to seeing the finished product. ✌🏻♥️
Oh thanks Dianne ☺️ 🙏 that’s very nice to hear.
I can see you NEED A NEW mat! In the meantime, turn it over.
🧐 yes, good observation! After filming this mum came over and suggested the same thing. We tried and it did cut much better. Thanks for your comment, I’ll gift myself a new mat soon.
You need to change your rotary blade. It is dull.
Yeah, and so quickly!
I need to add this to my queue. It will be #ten milli😂
Yes!!! The ever-growing list 😂
I think you may have notches in your ruler. The ruler gets these notches from being cut with the blade. That is the problem I have with the rotary blade not cutting through.
Oh that’s interesting… 🤔 I’ll have a close look at my ruler. Thanks for sharing your experience
I just found your video really love it ❤
Thank you so much!!😊
To make a design wall plastic tablecloth are backed with flannel. Since it’s summer they should be easy to find. That’s what I use. Coming from Massachusetts, USA
Great idea! I bet mum already has one in her linen cupboard. 😂 But also easy to buy. We are coming into winter here in Australia but I should be able to get one regardless.
Why don’t you chain stich them? You could cut the piece them frist
So.. after a session of sewing I realised that I will really need to make these blocks quicker; so many to make and I have limited time teaching full time. So yes, you’re right. Stayed tuned - next video I’ll be chain piecing!! 😁☺️
Enjoyed your video. Loved your daughter’s quilt. Does it have a name
@@aileenpeak9108 it doesn’t have a name. I just made up my own quarter circle templates (concave and convex), pieced the curve seam and cut into square blocks. I had wanted to practice curved seams and by the end, I was a pro! ☺️
Texas, USA… enjoyed your video…what I love about quilting is the creativity…
Hello from Brisbane!! Actually, we affectionately call it Brisvegas!! Thanks for watching and saying hello 👋 😁
I like the black and white flying geese, nice work!
☺️ it’s an enjoyable block to make too!
Your miniature house is darling, great activity during Covid.
It really is! Too cute. 🥰
At the pharmacy I asked for a container for used diabetic needles, he gave me one and I used that, before that I used an empty pill container. That way they can be safety disposed of.
👍
Hello again, keep up the good work and videos……..I enjoy watching you. You just gave me an idea, I might do the lights on top and carry on down with the darker colours.
Thanks for the comment love Doreen🥰 it’s going to be fun trying out all the different design ideas
I just love the look of your black and white quilt! I truly enjoyed watching you quilt it. I have never tried to quilt anything that large before. You showed me that it is possible on my sewing machine. Thank you so much! Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Definitely possible to quilt a large quilt on a domestic machine. Walking foot is your friend!
You need a new mat and sharp blade. You deserve it. Beautiful quilt blocks. Thank you for sharing. ❤
Yes, I might shout myself some new tools. Thank you! ☺️
What a great scrap buster!
😁 yes, I’ll be able to buy more fabric after this quilt! 😆
Rotary cutting is so much easier, especially when making lots of blocks. It just takes some practice, and maybe you need a new cutting mat?
Mum came over that afternoon and we flipped my mat over and it seemed to cut much better. I think the top surface is getting too old and soft. It was a hand-me-down from mum so it’s decades old….☺️
Hand cutting seems so much more relaxing. ❤️
Both of you need new blades!
😅 yep! They go blunt so quickly.
