I've been running karametra since shortly after it was printed. It was my first commander deck and has been through many updates. I recently added kodama but had been joking asked to not run the deck any more even before that. I do run a heavy ramp package including every single mana dork that produces green or white. I run 98 permanents with primal surge and genesis wave being the only non permanent spells. The deck wins in many different ways even though I'm typically the target by turn 4.

I have a question (I’m late to the party my apologies). Does decanter of Endless water not end up ruining your potential infinite with glinthorn by ridding your max hand size? I saw it in your deck list and was curious.

I have an Ayara, First of Locthwain deck that is going to enjoy a lot of these cards. My playgroup already hates the deck, and its gonna be getting a lot funnier now!

Best thing about your channel is that you talk about the building pitfalls of your commanders and struggles with the deck. No other channel I watch talks about that and its been tremendously helpful when I approach my builds.

The weird things is I have never heard the 'dies to removal' phrase used that way - it was almost always used as a justification for a card's power. Because it... dies to removal? It makes a lot more sense in this context, but is far less useful - I have always hated the term because it is a fallacy to judge a card in the vacuum of 'can it be stopped?' because ALL cards can be stopped - you just have to have the right tools.

Nadu is pretty much like playing solitaire. Kinda boring to be honest. But that is pretty much cedh for ya.

Cranial Plating was part of the Invent Superiority Precon Commander deck featuring Breya, which came out around the same time. Maybe there was some basis or card usage from that deck?

I run Brainstorm, ponder, and otherworldly gaze in my galea deck specifically because she cares about the top deck. She's slightly unique since she let's you look at the top any time and cast auras and cheats equip costs from there.

Karametra was my first Commander deck aswell back in 2014. I deliberately chose her to stay clear of my usual Magic tendencies at the time (I loved control and combo decks in 60 card-formats and played mostly Modern). Didn't play any mana dorks because I was foolishly too afraid of board wipes, but even with just running cards like Wood Elves, the deck still packed a crazy punch as a landfall value engine.

I think the spirit of the statement is true. Your deck should play off itself without outside input. You have removal, the win cons are plausible, it has hidden commanders in its ranks… the king doesn’t NEED his crown to rule. However he will have a lot easier time ruling with it on.

My muldrotha deck doesn’t worry about dies to removal, because I just commit tax fraud with command beacon. And to work without my commander, I have two main ways to ignore that: tutoring a command beacon/recuring it with Gravebreaker Lamia or copying it with a shifting woodland, and using meren of clan nel toth to keep the value going, as I also clone my legends to keep having like… three Muldrothas and a second meren.

Both building around and not around your commander have pros and cons and are valid strategies.

also fuck the artifact mana ramp, its not worth it, just ramp out lands. i turn 4 koma regularly. the only artifact activated abilities i play are sol ring and j lotus and swiftfoot boots. also, go cheesy.

my koma deck is all about making them hate koma so much they run out of answers so the rest of my deck gets to have fun... or koma overruns

about to watch for the decklist. liking just because its Koma!, she is considered my signature commander and i only have her as a mid tier deck i've recently been told... she is a dirty bitchand she is hated... she literally made someone leave a store even tho we both still lost both games. i wish you were local lol

You'll be arch-enemy with this deck. The "fun/mystery" of the Clash mechanic is over cuz the Marvo deck always wins the clash with top-deck manipulation, and the 8-drops they are casting are game-warping Toxrills or jin gitaxias or Breach the Multiverse. When you cast 8 drops for free in Blue, you can to hold up counter spells w that mana you didnt use, so you lock everyone out of the game. So yea.. its a "cheat big mana/control deck", which will make you arch enemy real quick.

So, I see you prioritized pretty hard having one drops. What's the main factor for that decision and what do you think of something like 'hidden string' over 'trait doctoring'?

I took out my shocks and put in slow lands. Only need 2 or more lands for them to come in untapped. It's perfect. Also, Eldrazi Displacer is a MVP card in my decks that run it. It used to be the closer card in my old blink burn modern deck too.

there's also a lot to say for building a deck that synergizes around one axis without the generic synergy pieces, and having the commander be a part of that but not the axis itself. there are ways to build decks that are functional without the commander, and are still not just a pile of popular cards. are the decks as good as they could be? perhaps not, but like. that's kind of the sacrifice you make. and guess what? if we were out here to play optimal decks, then uniqueness wouldn't be a factor we cared about. i want my deck to be able to do things without my commander, even if it's not operating at peak efficiency

Maybe for the lands if you don't like triomes or more expensive lands. There's a crap ton of old zendikar lands that tap for colorless or all colors with usually a condition or its to filter colorless. I'm playtesting it atm with mine and I'm having mixed success. Tempt with discovery with tron lands or the new land that's all types to turn them on if only a few opps take the bait. Expedition map works wonders too.

The thing is, your deck should work without your commander on the field, HOWEVER... once you start building goodstuff piles that have no real synergy with the commander whatsoever, you've lost the plot, you've lost the spirit and purpose of the format, and you should probably move onto something like Modern or Pioneer.

A great combo with the Necrobloom is generic costed cycle lands (polluted mire, blasted waste etc.) with the Fluctuator. The Fluctuator reduces the cycle cost to 0 for these lands so you can cycle them for free. Since discarding the land is part of the cycling cost, the Necrobloom can dredge them right back to your hand immediately to replace the draw. Presto! You can mill your whole deck if you want to with that combo. Syr Konrad, Death Hound, or any other card that likes things going into your graveyard will end the game right there. Add an Eldrazi Titan and you won’t mill out.

My merfolk tribal deck uses chulane as a commander simply because he's a great bant came engine.

power level of the deck and the budget ?

Alright back from 3 weeks and let me tell ya I one the first game with Ovika and I felt terrifying. The giant flyer stopped people from wanting to swing their big bads and the goblins kept me in a very safe goblin fort and I just kept churning out more goblins, once I knocked out the second biggest threat the other two just sat in acceptance that they forgot to deal with the goblins

Now I gotta re think my moth man..... (sad borat noise)

My deck works without my commander but the commander helps set off the win condition. And i run 2-3 counters to make sure it can pop off when I need it to. Is this a problem?
