What is Generative Art: TouchDesigner’s Role in Art, Algorithms, and Creative Systems Explained
Learn its core principles, history, and how tools like TouchDesigner transform creativity through algorithms and systems. Project Files Here 👉 okamirufu.link/project_files_collections
==============
*Video Summary*
00:00 *Intro*
01:38 *Core Idea of Generative Art:*
Designing frameworks of rules and parameters to create art
with structured spontaneity, such as dynamic color gradients,
geometric shapes, and organic particle behaviors.
03:19 *The Power of Algorithms:*
Utilizing computational methods like Perlin noise, fractals,
and cellular automata to generate patterns and textures
inspired by both nature and abstraction.
05:14 *Human-Machine Collaboration:*
Generative art redefines authorship by blending artist-defined
rules with machine-executed randomness, creating unexpected
artistic outcomes.
06:30 *Historical Foundations:*
Examples like Mozart’s Musical Dice Game and Islamic geometric
patterns demonstrate pre-digital generative principles combining
rules with randomness.
09:43 *TouchDesigner as a Tool:*
Real-time, node-based platform enabling artists to craft
complex generative systems with seamless integration of
sensors, AI, and procedural design.
11:02 *Recreating generative art works:*
We will recreate some well-known generative art projects,
one by Vera Molnar and another by Frieder Nake. We'll use
popular operators like the Noise Operator and Feedback,
applying techniques such as instancing within a Geo Component.
23:55 *Key Artists in the Field:*
Innovators like Mario Klingemann, Casey Reas, and Michael
Hansmeyer explore generative techniques in AI, algorithmic
visuals, and architectural design.
Interactivity in Contemporary Art:
Modern generative works engage audiences through real-time
systems, allowing viewer actions or environmental data to
influence the artwork.
25:19 *Cultural and Philosophical Impact:*
Generative art challenges traditional creativity, highlighting
themes like ecological interconnectedness, the role of
algorithms, and the beauty of unpredictability.
==============
Artist Mentioned:
*Frieder Nake (1960s)*
In the 1960s, Frieder Nake pioneered the use of algorithms to create art, producing intricate drawings using early computers. His work demonstrated the potential of generative systems to redefine artistic practice, blending human creativity with the precision of machine execution.
*Vera Molnár (2023)*
Often regarded as the "mother of generative art," revolutionized the field in the 1960s and 1970s by using computers to explore geometric abstraction. Through early programming languages, she introduced randomness into her compositions, challenging traditional notions of authorship and creating works that balanced control with unpredictability.
*Harold Cohen and AARON (1980s)*
Harold Cohen developed AARON, a groundbreaking program capable of generating autonomous artworks. AARON blurred the line between artist and machine, raising philosophical questions about creativity and redefining the role of algorithms in artistic expression.

Metallic Ribs in Touchdesigner - Using Feedback Blur and Displace TOP [Super Fast Tutorial Series ]
Hey - are you better able to explain how to set up the feedback operators using the non-custom one that you have? Even with your additional info in the video description I'm still confused and don't have it correct. My end result doesn't look like yours. The Level 1 operator is directly before the feedback operator, so are there 2 Levels in a row, then Feedback, Transform and Blur? And I don't understand what 'option pointing to a Level parameter for opacity' means. Any help is appreciated!
Thats cool
Wow, this is an introduction of an insane quality. I was looking for the tutorial and it just poped up ! Thank you so much !
The machine is a paintbrush, nothing more.
thanks ai
Great tutorial! It’d be awesome if you could explain some stuff a bit slower-not just to copy your ideas, but to really get how TouchDesigner operators work. Also after 24 minutes of the background music, I got quite irritated. Maybe try something less intense and more chill for tutorials. Except of that - well done!
This is what i have god damn been looking for
does anyone know any other alternative or experience similar to playtron?
Great video!! I’d like to ask if there are any limitations for trigger objects. For example, do they need to be conductive or have any specific properties? Would it work by using a stone as a trigger object? Thank you!
Love this content, but the AI voice is super hard to handle for too long.
Very cool, does it also work with the touch me device?
hehe yes (of course :) Thank you for letting me play on your ground!
great video!
This was AMAZING! Thank you! 🙏
i have no idea how im following every step like a dummy and still cant get the same result of each step
Haha its funny, BTW the new tutorials have a different approach
Subscribed!
thanks!
Respect 🙏
Thanks!
A luxury. Thank you
Thanks!
I installed touchdesigner ages ago and never dove into it because I wasn't able to find some material that starts from scratch but ramps up quickly enough to keep me interested. I'm gonna take this as a sign I should commit to learn it.
Hey, this is great news! I hope you enjoy the journey. When you get things done with TD, it’s amazing!
Please never stop making videos. You’re just built different. These are incredible.
Thank you! Long story short, I almost didn’t upload this video to the channel. I thought it was missing a lot, but now I’m just grateful I did.
Hi! Thank you for amazing tutorials! But have some problems with custom component for Processing (13 min 50) in your Patreon page. Could you please share with it? Thanks!
Yes, let me know what specific problem you have, Also on Patreon, if you go to the Collections / Project Files section, you'll find the entire project, including the program made in Processing.
Super Cool :D
Thanks!
你讲的真好
非常感谢你关注我的频道!
Cool video! I would recommend the works of Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela. Both researchers studied cybernetics, a field focused on cycles and autonomous systems, and developed the concept of "autopoiesis". This idea emphasizes the interconnectedness of the environment and the individual, viewing them as inseparable parts of a single system. I resonate with these concepts, particularly in the context of generative art, as they align with the notion of autonomy inherent in these creative process
This is mind-blowing! Maturana and Varela's work is super inspiring, especially the whole autopoiesis idea and how it ties to autonomy and interconnectedness. Definitely adding them to my list to dive into soon!
This was just perfect! I’m starting to learn TouchDesigner, and this is the best introduction I’ve seen so far. Thank you! I’d really appreciate it if you could recommend how to continue studying TouchDesigner
Hey, thanks for your comment! Well, the best recommendation is to start with the introductory courses available on UA-cam or on the official TouchDesigner website. Then, if you're interested in exploring more advanced concepts, you can check out content from Paketa12. The most important thing is to get familiar with the idea that in TD, any type of data can manipulate any other type of data. For example, texture data can be converted into numbers and vice versa. It’s an incredibly intuitive way to create that no other program offers, and that’s what makes it so exciting!
Hi! I just tried with your chromatic Delusions, And It works So cool!! :) I wanna try other shapes also, Is there a way to control the shapes? like using square, circle only...like that
Hey, yeah, once you understand this concept, you can use any type of image to generate patterns.
i’m literally so excited for season 2. about a month 🫨
Are you suggesting a more advanced video about "What is TouchDesigner"? Hmm, I hadn't thought about that before, but it could be a good idea!
I did not make this comment wtf
@@FullScreenTV_ haha what you mean ? lol
Absolutely glad to subscribe.
Thanks, mate! Happy to have you here. 😊
I got this recommended out of nowhere. Watched a few minutes and subbed right away. Love anything generative, esp. animation. 😊
Yes, exactly! I mean, the possibilities are truly endless, and if we start combining, for example, this generative logic with video editing, interesting things could happen
this looks so cool
Thanks
Need a tutorial for this one 🔥
Probably this week will be online

Wow, "generative stuff", like the stuff one makes with Process or OF, was the next on my TD boot camp list! It's like you're reading my notebook. Loved the art history as well. Thanks again for all the work! As a side note; any voice you use if fine by me, but my 11 year old is convinced you're a robot (AI). 🙂
Hi thanks for taking the time for this long comment , maybe i am a robot ! :)
Sorry, but the "translate" controller in the control panel ( Pseudo_liquid/ Noise / traslate ) what is linked to? how it can modify the render?
Hi its linked to another translate inside the component
What is generative "art?" Worthless trash.
Insane work. Insane. You are defining the future of generative art.
Thanks mate, woow this is a big responsibility, but I'll do my best
This is Groundbreaking !!!!!! Amazing work brother. It almost looks metaphysical. I am a music producer myself and would love to collaborate with you in the future for some amazing art. I hope this can be projected using some holographs or projectors in reality to create an actual 3D interactive and dynamic projection.
Thank mate, let's talk on Instagram you never know 🤔
can you please share your youtube video creation process? the way you add subtitles, keep your consistency with the video style? but mostly about adding text to your video
Hey mate, this isn't a short answer, but the main thing I can tell you is that I try to keep things as simple as possible, and I follow these steps: First, I write a script for what I want to teach, and honestly, this takes up 80% of my time. Then, I record the videos needed to explain specific concepts. After that, I edit the cuts to make them more practical and smooth, removing pauses. Finally, I add text, transitions, and music. The most important thing is that I aim to improve each new video by 1%. With that, I feel like I’m gaining a lot of experience in the long run. Oh, and anything that can be automated, I automate using various tools. It’s not much, but it always helps!
Great work! Thanks for sharing this knowledge. Greetings from Mexico!✌
Bienvenido, hablo un poco de español tambien ! ojala algun dia conozca Mexico
nice work!
Thanks!
This was great! Which tier on Patreon do I need to get access to project files and the component? Thanks! :)
Hey mate, you can have everything in the Visionary Tier!
my hero❤
Thanks!! 💪
Wow
Thanks
A perfect introduction to TD. Thank you VERY much for sharing your knowledge...for providing easy to understand explanation.
Thanks mate! do you think we need a second part ?
Hey, the tutorials are absolutely amazing! Thanks! Although I followed this and the previous tutorial very carefully I'm not sure where I missed the step of setting the "level" parameter. I'm not sure what I should connect them to, could you please explain this step?
yeah, same issue
Hey for sure, and sorry for the late response, do you mind to share with me the exactly time of the video
@@OkamirufuV at 4 minutes - in your last tutorial you didnt mention a level parameter so ig you forgot to mention it
When I press the "Start stream" button this error appears: File "C:\Users\palaz\Desktop\StreamDiffusion\streamdiffusionTD\main_sdtd.py", line 16, in <module> from torchvision.transforms.functional import to_tensor ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'torchvision'
Hi, I got a bit confused by your question because I'm not using streamdiffusionTD in this tutorial.
Hi, For some reason one of the colour pickers is showing as an outcome? any idea why? haha
hi haha!, you mean the component does not have an input ? the blue one ?
