How to calculate a cross product | Matrix-determinant cross product | Cyclic Cross Product
Calculating the cross product of two arbitrary vectors isn’t exactly easy to do with the magnitude formula absin(theta) and the right hand rule. Instead, we need more exact mathematical methods to do it.
This video covers two such methods. The first method is the matrix-determinant method, in which the two vectors are put in the second and third rows (respectively) of a 3x3 matrix. The first row is filled with the unit vectors x hat, y hat, and z hat. Take the determinant of this matrix, and you get the cross product!
The second method is a method based on the Right-hand rule. Here, you treat the vectors as polynomials, and foil out or multiply the individual components of each vector. To determine the directions of the cross products of the unit vectors in your expansion (ie x hat x z hat, etc.), you can use the right hand rule or use the cyclic shortcut. The cyclic shortcut assembles x hat, y hat, and z hat in a sort of cycle and tells you that if you take the cross product of any two of the vectors in the direction of the cycle, you’ll get the third, “unused” unit vector in the positive direction. If you take the cross product of any two of the vectors opposite the direction of the cycle, you’ll get the third, “unused” unit vector in the negative direction.

Right Hand Rule #2 | Axis-Circulation | Magnetic Field around Wire
Переглядів 4972 роки тому
In this video, I'll discuss what's known as "Right Hand Rule #2." This right hand rule helps us figure out the direction of circulation about some axis. What might you ever need that for? 1. Making sense of the rotation direction of torque 2. Applying Stoke's Theorem in Vector Calculus (discussed in a Calc III course) 3. Determining the direction of concentric circle magnetic field lines around...

In this video, I will explain ALL THREE methods for the right hand rule (RHR) for cross products! This includes the... 1. Index finger, middle finger RHR 2. Curl Fingers RHR 3. Palm-push RHR Note: There is another right hand rule that's used for something other than cross products (it's the one where your curl your fingers and tick out a thumb, used for circulation, the magnetic field around a ...

What on Earth is a cross product?!?!? That's the question we answer in this video. This video discusses what a cross product is: a vector operation that multiplies two vectors to return a third vector perpendicular to the first two. The video also introduces the basic formula for the magnitude of the cross product (the full vector formula of the cross product will be covered in another video). ...

Edit: So apparently I pronounce Andromeda completely wrong. Whoops. Maybe it was a test. If you're reading this, you probably passed. The Andromeda galaxy is the galaxy closest to our own Milky Way. And like any good neighbor, it wants to eat us. In 4 billion years, the Andromeda Galaxy will collide with our Milky Way. How do we know this? We can analyze the light emitted from the Andromeda Gal...

Stars. These objects are the wonders of the universe. We have always know quite a bit about them (where they're located, their names, etc). But beginning in the late 1890s, we learned a lot more about these wonders of the universe. In this time period, Harvard Observatory began a the Henry Draper Memorial Project. This project saw Harvard astronomers take pictures of many stars' spectrums, whic...

Exoplanets are awesome. By definition, they are any planetary body that is located outside of our solar system (so a planet that is not Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune). Exoplanets have the basic, familiar properties of planets: they orbit stars and rotate on their axis. However, the diversity of exoplanets results in a wide variety of characteristics. Some exop...

The distance to the event horizon is called the Schwarzschild radius. What's so special, you ask? ...

Astrophysics “intellectual satisfaction” . . that makes sense . . considering everything you analyse and learn about are things you will never physically see or physically touch . . Astrophysics: a smoke screen profession . . a profession that has no record of actually helping humankind in anyway . . made up of scientific theories (yes theories) written by fictional authors . . studied by the most gullible people on the planet . . trying to figure-out answers to questions no one has the answers to is admirable, but when its for fictional stories such as black holes . . dark matter & dark energy . . wormholes . . neutron stars & pulsars . . distant galaxies & galaxy clusters . . cosmic microwave background radiation . . gravitational waves . . supernovae & gamma-ray bursts . . exoplanets & their atmospheres . . then all that time was spent on something that has no affect on anything or anyone . . just like black holes, doesn’t affect us at all and never will.

Astrophysics is not just to satisfy curiosity. Many projects involve a tremendous technological advance. We have the first image of a black hole, the detection of gravitational waves or the James Webb telescope. All these projects involve a collaboration of many scientific areas and a large investment. But every technological development has an application for which it is worth investing. Don't get frustrated by it, practically all science in all countries is like this. It does not only happen in astrophysics, it happens even in lines of research with the greatest immediate technological application.
