I have just seen this and it brought back a lot of memories. I was one of the design draughtsmen who helped designed the class 9E in Trafford park Manchester working for the chief mechanical engineer John Dowling. It was one my first jobs. Most jobs require parts are designed as light as possible to minimise axle load, in this case the axle load was around 28 tons and the body side skin was around 5mm thick to add mass. The heavy loco weight being required to in order to produce the high tractive effort. The loco had a compartment on the underframe to house a small motor bike so the crew could drive along the very long trains to carry out any checks. The rear and of the locomotive mounting the pantograph was vey low because the electrical insulators were twice the normal height as the line was 50KV and not 25 KV as in UK
Thanks I learned a lot from this film and use it in my tourist guide
It's such a shame for SA. Too bad it was such an outrageous idea for the colonialists to gradually integrate the native peoples and bring them up in par with themselves. Now, you get even more decay and dysfunction in what should be a great country for all. Yeah, greed! Yeah, prejudice! Yeah, revenge/justice, whatever you want to call the flip flop. Woot!
Wow incredible
Thanks for sharing this major achievement of the Railways pee Transnet! This line was once the money spinner of the Railways, now unfortunately becoming just a memory.
Fantastic steam engine. Those passengers were very lucky.
Indeed travelling in luxury on the Blue Train behind an immaculate steam locomotive AND keeping time.
I just want to my this of train they know about the steam train.
Please rephrase you question.
Amazing video, thanks for sharing. Just sad to see the change from world leaders to the completely dysfunctional railway network we have today 😢.

Thanks, what an achievement!
I'm a retired US engineer and I would like to know what that driver is doing when he pulls on that handle. Can anyone answer that please?
Which one? Please give a video time reference.

@@gordonvincent731 It is the vacuum brake handle applying the vacuum powered brakes on the locomotive tender only.
@@gerhardlesch3615 Thanks for your reply. To be honest, I have no idea how that vacuum brake works. Thanks again.
@@gordonvincent731 Google "vacuum brakes in train" and you should get several links; even YT videos.
Nothing better ever... built to last and carry on carrying

Great train! Niesamowite. Thanks from Poland.
0:44 see if his shirt is still white when he get off the loco.
660 cars! That's a crazy consist!
Nostalgic, while at the Metallurgical Laboratory, it was my privilege to do tests on this track. Only with 100 fully loaded ore trucks. Thank you Gerrit Lesch for the memory.
what am i doing here after 7 years...
Anybody know what kind of spider this is?
Carl Johnson it’s a wrap around spider
Those were the days....
It’s still running today
You need to dub over this with the cloak engage line from the game crysis lol
Now I REALLY wanna squish something with camouflage
Thats one massively spruced up machine, beautiful !!
Mens maar Griet het lekker gehardloop!
Wow
My dad did the camera work on this video. His footage was the only usable footage after some of the "professional" videographers took their equipment inside the electric loco and the magnetic induction rendered their tapes useless. I remember the SAUK flew my dad to Jozi on the night they arrived in Saldanha, to use his footage. It has since been dubbed and used for various documentaries as he did not register any copyright on the footage. But thanks for sharing this.
Christo van Dyk, dankie vir jou kommentaar. Dit sit stukkie waarde by dié video se geskiedenis.
excuse me,did you have the video of the WHOLE train?could you post it on UA-cam? thanks!
Baie mooi video
What is the date of this run? Thanks
Early 1980's.
Date of this run is now pegged on 18 May 1990.
Stunning.
Yes.
Great stuff!! I worked ore trains from Thabazimbi back in the 80's on 7E units. Sad to see the record breaking 9E's go as Transnet starts to retire them
As ek reg onthou was die vrag 100 gelaaide DGLJ's (sogenaamde super DZ).
Nope. Ek was nie so gelukkig nie.
This is awesome. Thank you so much for taking the time to load this.
Totally amazing. My grandfather helped with the outlay of the railway line.
I was in charge of the test coach doing the preliminary runs testing the simulations and calculations.
Wonderful
Wonder who was on the footplat - JOhn Gilberthorpe and Richard Niven - perhaps???
Polla van Rensburg was the driver. The fireman's name I could not trace sofar, but still trying.
The fireman was Paul Kruger according to Polla's memory.
In die 1970's?
Vroeë tagtig's.
Gerhard Lesch Dankie!
Incredible piece of footage Gerhard!!! Some of the best I've seen on SAR Steam. Amazing! Thanks for posting! Really proud when I see this!

You are right there was always two loco's
wow, amazing!
