Haitian immigrants eating pets?? Instead of these baseless claims, why don’t we have a look at some actual facts from the history of Haiti and Haitian people 👇
Haiti was a French colony from the 1600s with enslaved Africans working on their plantations.
The French kept the slaves under inhumane conditions and were extremely cruel and abusive to them.
By 1789, the African-born slave population was around 500K, outnumbering the white colonists by large.
Soon, the slaves started a rebellion that turned into a war for independence.
With their victory in 1804, they liberated themselves from the French colonizers and abolished the institution of slavery.
However, the French government refused to recognize Haiti.
They only did so in 1825, but in return, they forced Haiti to pay an incredible amount of reparations annually until 1887 for the losses “caused by” the Haitian people fighting for their freedom. Can you imagine?
The debt created by this obligation significantly contributed to the deep poverty Haiti is in today.
After being exploited by the French, it was the U.S.’s turn. It occupied Haiti between 1915 and 1934, introducing an unpaid forced labor system having Haitians work on their infrastructure projects.
But that’s not all. The U.S. committed the Les Cayes massacre where they shot peacefully protesting Haitians.
During their almost two decades of occupation, the U.S. committed the following human rights abuses against Haitian people: concentration camps, forced labor, torture, racial segregation, among many others.
The people of Haiti have long suffered from political instability, frequent earthquakes and aftermaths of being bled dry by other countries. Today, Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and is in a deep humanitarian, political and security crisis with gang violence forcing people into displacement.
