Can You Get Bean Seeds to Germinate Faster?

Did you know that soaking certain seeds will help them germinate faster? The hard coding on some seeds like beans, okra and squash, makes it difficult for water to penetrate which will slow down germination. What is the typical yield per plant for dwarf tomatoes in your experience?

    • @veggy360
      @veggy360 Місяць тому

      That is a very good question, but it definitely depends on variety and care. I have harvested more fruit from Tanager, Adelaide Festival and Sweet Scarlet Dwarf in past years but have not kept track of total yields. Last year I planted some F3 seeds that Craig LeHoullier sent me…Blues Bling x Dwarf Mocha’s Cherry and Don’s Double Delight x Dwarf Mocha’s Plum were consistently LOADED with fruit and had even higher yields in spite of their compact side. However, they got hit with blight earlier than the other varieties.

    You can save time by not potting up and sow directly in the garden after it gets warmer than about 50°F at night regularly. Mine are in 2.5" x 2.5" pots and about 3x taller than yours. Roots are ok to exit below and actually grow into the reservoir below. Just keep some nutrient-water in there so they don't dry out. It works great.

    • @veggy360
      @veggy360 2 місяці тому

      What zone are you in that you can plant directly in the garden? I try to grow year round so I have to start inside then transplant out as space opens up in the garden and temperature are favorable. I like the idea of skipping the potting up step, but I would need to buy more grow lights if I start in larger pots. Thank you for the tip on the nutrient-water!

    • @C3Voyage
      @C3Voyage 2 місяці тому

      @@veggy360 I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I should have said don't repot from one container to another before transplant. I start mine in in 2.5" x 2.5" wide by 3.5" tall pots (smallish). Instead of transferring into another pot, I just let it continue to grow in the same pot until transplant out in the garden. In my small pots, the plants can get large, but it doesn't hurt anything, and in fact, may prevent repotting shock. Certainly saves space. I'm not sure why folks keep repotting before transplant. I think it's a copy and paste thing. You know, someone sees it and takes it as "the way." Don't get me wrong, repotting does work of course, but it's an extra step that's not needed.

    Had the same problem with Blight on my Dwarfs in 2023. Although ravaged, the dwarfs did resist it better than my Indeterminiates. Any tips on how to avoid Blight in 2024?

    • @veggy360
      @veggy360 7 місяців тому

      Glad to hear your dwarfs resisted better. Which varieties did you plant? Were any of them more resistant? Here is what I do for blight control. This year, however, I will start spraying earlier! 1) Remove all leaves below 1st set of blooms and, and lower leaves close to the soil to prevent "splash up" onto the leaves. 2) Dwarf tomatoes have a lot of leaves for their size so I prune out excess leaves to improve air flow (this really helped in 2023). This year I will prune more & start earlier. 3) Prune off the diseased leaves as the leaf spot diseases start to appear, cleaning the pruning shears with an alcohol spray between plants to prevent further spread. I make sure to leave enough leaves on the plant though for photosynthesis. 4) Use foliar sprays regularly to control disease as much as possible. I use a hydrogen peroxide spray or a baking soda spray, alternating as needed. Gary Pilarchik has a great video @THERUSTEDGARDEN, ua-cam.com/video/9yGsIepqWXk/v-deo.html on how to use the hydrogen peroxide spray (4-8 oz. per gallon of water). Baking soda spray: 1 heaping tablespoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon vegetable oil & a small amount of mild soap in a gallon of water. PLEASE do a test spray & wait 48 hours before spraying all your tomato plants. Best of luck to you for a great 2024 gardening year!

      @@veggy360 From memory Tanager, Egypt Yellow, Kangaroo Paw Brown, JackAss Yellow, Golden Champion, Dwarf Champion, Lemon Ice, Tasmanian Chocolate and New Big Dwarf all seemed to come back pretty well with new leaf growth and fruits late into the fall. CC McGhee, Rosella Purple & Crimson, Rumpelstiltskin, Adlelaide Festival & Dwarf Mr. Snow all died before I could get any fruit. Try this instead. *WORLDS BEST GARDENING SYSTEM?* Try chicken wire vases lined with leaves = mulch all surfaces not just top. Worlds best vase or garden, mobile compact system by far. Can be dipped in water buckets save water. Roots gro prolifically under vase so mulch below vases. U can plant 1 gallon seedling, add 3 gallons soil up tomatoe stem up tall 20" vase. U can stretch vase 25" 24"x32" wire makes 20" tall vase. U can lay vase horizontally for a low profile plant, u can then lay blanket in fall preserve warmth cold nights extend season 1month. Roots gro right thru it. Watering is easier bcuz sides exposed. Roots breath much better obviously, roots dont burn or get soggy bcuz they stop rather then spiral.

Thus the stem will sprout more roots higher up. My vases CONCENTRATE CONFINE THE ROOTS (vertically). So important so they dont spread sideways 4' which is brutal on your water bill. World champion tomatoe growers can skyrocket their tomatoe root systems by enclosing 2' stem with vases fill with loose dirt. Quality not quantity. 1monster garden plant can squash 25 typical plants with fruit of vastly superiour quality. No till? Nonsense. Till ALWAYS TILL. Till under mulch till 2fine powder.

Thanks to the leadership that you and Craig have provided, y'all have blessed so many gardeners in so many countries with a rich selection of dwarfs. @@veggy360 It’s a pleasure being able to bring these to the public worldwide 😁 You’ll find that even your favourites don’t give their full potential each season, so I always encourage people to try them a few different summers. Sneaky Sauce outlasted everything in my worst ever season, producing about 40 tomatoes on one plant. We had so much rain that most plants just refused to set fruit and got diseased extremely fast but Sneaky Sauce didn’t seem to care at all 🤩

    I only just discovered your channel and have subscribed as I really like it. I'm just trying out my first dwarf tomato project toms this year (in Australia so heading into summer) - Tasmanian Chocolate and Gondwana Lava. A couple of your plants are a little bigger than I was imagining - I'm going to need a strong cage by the looks of it! Love the idea of dwarf toms and the idea of the project.

      I am so happy that you will be trying some dwarf toms I will be adding to my "collection" next year so please let me know how Tasmanian Chocolate and Gondwana Lava do for you. I too was surprised at how large some of the dwarf tomato plants got. Tanager and Maralinga seemed to be the largest but I will definitely be planting both of them next year. Strong cages are definitely a good idea. I actually had to use a stake for the taller ones to better support them. Thank you for watching, and I look forward to hearing your dwarf toms do!

    I planted Tuscan kale and curly kale this fall after I saw some UA-cam videos and fell in love with their shapes. I had never seen it before in my life and never tasted before. I ate one of the leaves for the first time and realized this is why kale is such a less known vegetable and nobody sells it in markets. It tastes almost exactly like cabbage's outer leaves. But I am wondering if they will taste better when they get mature

    • @veggy360
      @veggy360 Рік тому

      Kale will get sweeter and more tasty after 1st frost. My favorite kales are Russian Red Kale (milder flavor, tender leaves) and Dazzling Blue Kale (very colorful Tuscan-type kale). These are both great served in salads as "baby greens" or allowed to grow more and served cooked. I am not a fan of eating the larger leaves raw by themselves, but some people like them that way. They are both of these kales are especially good in smoothies when mixed with carrots and different types of fruit like apples and berries. My favorite way of cooking the kale is to sautee garlic and onions in olive oil, then add some chopped kale and some soy sauce. Cook till still slightly tender, then add a splash of honey vinegar to finish it off. You can buy on-line at vomfassmadison-universityave.com/products/honey-balsamic-vinegar. I would encourage you to try different ways of cooking kale, or serving the baby leaves raw as they can be very tasty and are highly nutritious. Thank you for watching!

    It is entirely possible that I missed it, but one should point out that the dwarf tomato project tomatoes are all "open pollinated", meaning that one can save the seeds and they will grow "true" the next year. This is in contrast to the very common "hybrid" tomatoes that are not guaranteed to grow true, in fact, not likely to.
