2024 Potato Harvest pt. 1 (No talking)

Part of this years potato harvest. Of the potatos planted, many in this patch were viking and yukon gold potatos. I felt that these potatoes yielded decently despite lack of garden bed preperation/fertility. I initially started with approximately 5lbs of seed potato per variety. Some of the yukons were grown in grow bags which will be shown in part 2. If you would like more free weekly content ...

    I tried 2 ways. 1: Took seeds out of dragon fruit and put them in dirt. 20 days later = Nothing. 2: Put seeds in zip lock with wet paper towel for 4 days then in dirt coved with plastic for 4 days. 8 days = 2/7 are starting to come out of the dirt (so far as of today). 😀😀 Plastic definitely helped! For sure recommend doing it that way. Seeds don't really need sun just keep the dirt wet.

      Thanks for leaving your experience for others to try! I eventually learned over time how hardy these plants are. I ended up getting rid of/composting many of the plants I show in the video and recycled the leftover dirt. Many of the seeds were still germinating in a tub full of potting soil despite no sunlight or water. The plants are just tough. The method I used seemed to work great, but as with many things there is never one "right way". These are tropical plants so they definately appreciate the added moisture.

    This was perfect timing to post this. I'm in 2 minds of which mill to get. As an older female I worry about manual grinding but with future lack of power looming I'm stuck on which grinder to get. Does this one have a motor that could be attached later on if the need arises? I'm thinking of using it that way with a solar generator

    • @flintandfish
      @flintandfish 5 місяців тому

      This one doesn’t come with a motor, but you can buy one separately through wondermill I believe. I am hoping to invest in one somewhere down the line. I learned that the hard way after manually grinding 5 lb of wheat and corn one weekend. If I were going to buy a mill with the intent of only grinding flour I would save and invest in the country living mill which also has the fly wheel and option for a motor. I am sure you are aware of it but I just wanted to mention it.

      @flintandfish 5 місяців тому

      @@cherriebaars3971 No problem! A lot of the gardening/homesteading communities that I keep up with often reccomend a few of the mills. I encourage you to do a lot of research and figure out which mill best suits your needs before buying since these mills are pretty expensive without accesories. The selling point for my Wondermill Jr was that I could grind both wet or dry foods. The Country Living grain mill exceeds in milling dry grains into fine flour, but should not be used for grinding nixtamalized corn for tortillas. They do make a nut butter attatchment that you can use for oily foods, but it is relativley expensive (about $200 USD). The Country Living mill is already about $700 USD so anything more seemed out of my budget personally.

      Time/locaiton is important! I used to run into the same issues. Try to find patches/groves with many different trees of various ages early in the summer and check between late August and early-mid October. I found most of my fruit on trees that were 15-20 ft tall and had a trunk diameter of about 3+ inches. There were some outliers though so take it with a grain of salt. The secret for my success was going into relatively heavy brush far from trails and paying attention to the number of individual plants in an area. Shake every older tree (gently) at the base even if you don't see fruit sometimes they hide behind leaves.

  • @scottjkern
    @scottjkern Рік тому

    I’m from my knowledge anything with tomatoes you shouldn’t have to pressure canned you can steam can or water bath especially you’re putting lemon juice in like I do and you should be using canning salt

    • @flintandfish
      @flintandfish Рік тому

      In regards to acidity and lemon juice, the National Center For Home Food Preservation states, "Tomatoes for many years were considered high acid. However, new varieties, over-mature fruits, and tomatoes from dead or frost-killed vines may have a pH greater than 4.6. The USDA and University-based researchers have determined that to ensure a safe acid level for boiling water and pressure canning of whole, crushed, or juiced tomatoes, add 2 tablespoons of bottled lemon juice or ½ teaspoon of citric acid per quart of tomatoes". For salt, you don't have to add salt for this recipe its based off of your preference, though canning salt is ideal for pickling/pickled/fermented foods, it is not necessary, just more ideal for keeping the brine clear/more appetizing, the National Center For Home Food Preservation doesn't recommend using low sodium salt though for fermenting. Thanks for watching and leaving some input though, let me know if you would like some links to the sources I am referencing.

    • @scottjkern
      @scottjkern Рік тому

      @@flintandfish I believe there’s different ways of everything when I first started canning tomato juice I would just make sure that the jars were really hot. I put the hot boiling tomato juice and put the lids on and set it aside and it would snap. It was sealed, but now I use a steam canner for all my tomato juice all my pickles and diced tomatoes. I’m 56 years old and I’m not dead yet.

    • @flintandfish
      @flintandfish Рік тому

      @@scottjkernIm sure the USDA is overly cautious as they give some room for error since they know everyone isn’t going to run their kitchen like a lab setting. I come from a science/lab background and try to follow rules and protocol to my best ability. Thats just my personality, like I said in the video im no expert, just showing people how I do it according to the information I have on hand! Do what works best for you, the only reason I pressure can the tomatoes is because they recommend it in the USDA book as it is supposed to keep quality and nutrition in the tomatoes a little better than water-bath canning.

    Got my PL-880 in yesterday. I was shocked it had USB-C, surprisingly noted with a sticker on page 2 of the manual that it had its USB port upgraded. I too, am going to have to run an antenna wire. The built in extendable one only picks up FM and 1 AM channel. (Central Arkansas). I am a bit disappointed that the "SSB" does not have an on screen visual indicator. I also cannot get it to cover the NOAH Weather frequency.

      I wasn't aware that they upgraded the USB port. I bought this radio spring of 2022 so the change is relatively new. I'm sorry to hear that your standard antenna isn't picking up much, I find it weird that yours doesn't specify the usb/lsb when in the respected ssb, setting mine does. I also can't pick op NOAA, I think that station is broadcasted on more of VHF frequency. I can pick it up on my cheap Baofeng GT-5R. Thanks for letting me know about the new changes and thanks for watching. I'll be sure to put out a few more radio videos as I get deeper into the hobby. I have been meaning to get my HAM license and learn a bit more about radios. Might get a new cb radio base station with ssb and make my own wire dipole antenna. Time will tell.

      Sounds like a fun time! Hook size and gear is sometimes overhyped/emphasized, because of the "bigger is always better" mentality. But hey, that's what drives sales in the industry! Thanks, for watching! In the case of this video though, I 100% believe that making these leaders helps keep fish on. Your 50 lb cat on 17lb line is an anomaly and most people would either be fighting the fish for 30 min or snap their line.
