Retro Racing Reports
United States
Приєднався 24 січ 2014
This channel was created to provide an outlet for auto racing history videos. I've given several presentations on the topic. They are given then gone. So we began recording them and placed them online.
Retro Racing Reports is the latest iteration for preserving auto racing history. An old program is selected, the feature story is read and its pages presented. No additional commentary is needed.
More auto racing has taken place in Southern California than any other place in the world. I discovered this fact while researching my graduate thesis in college. What I also discovered was a passion for the history of Los Angeles and its ties to the coincidental development of the automobile.
Most of my time is spent actually doing things thus my two websites are infrequently updated.

I'd much rather be in the wood shop than online. But if people keep showing up with cameras, I might as well share the experience with you.

Gordon Johncock Wins! Indy Car racing at Hanford, CA, 1967 (ep 108)
Hanford's triangular shape presented some interesting challenges for drivers of the 1960s. All of them were up for it as they had perfected their craft on a wide variety of tracks.
Why did Hanford eventually fold up? What happened to this fine facility? Sorry, no answers here. But it does give room for comments down below.
This transitional era of Indy Car racing saw Gordon Johncock taking the win. A.J. Foyt offers his opinion on the relative strengths of the given cars, Mario Andretti and Al Unser tangle early.

California Racing Association started as a Roadster association then changed to Sprint Cars and even had a midget division for some time. could make the nascar cup, modified from 1950
I don't understand your comment but will say they could have a long term NASCAR and Indy circuit at Hanford.
Jimmy Gordon was an awesome driver…R.I.P. never forget that day….
Sadly, not all our race memories are happy ones.
Wow, those are some big names!
Yes! The absolute biggest and best homegrown racers.
They even made a porn movie at ask out one time
I lived 2 blocks fromascot lucky Me I raced there in the seventies and eighties
There was something going on virtually every day at Ascot. Plus, those were the days went people went outside to find fun.
That's cool i was and official at Baylands,,,man that was fun while it lasted,i worked as an official wed moto cross, thur speedway motor cycles, fri mini stocks and American stocks, sat Sprintcars , Sunday Nascar latemodels or work at the Drag strip, alot of memories, by est time of my life
Thank you! It takes more than racers to put on a race show.
I will have to settle for getting a program from you on Turkey Night.
Happy to help out.
Your programs were the best $5 I spent at the races.
Thank you, that means a lot. We cannot go back, but we can remember.
Some great racing history. How about doing a video about the ill-fated CASE racing team featuring Louis Strang, Joe Jagersberger and Jay McNay.
Thank you, I'll pass that along to Joe.
WoW remember my young years of racing with this racing circuit at 605 spdway, OrangeShow, El Cajon, Saugus, etc with the likes of the Beckers, Baldwin, McCrays, Esau, Irwin, Funkhauser, and more. REAL door to door hard racing in those days. Thanks for the post.
That was a good stretch of racing years.
I still have all the programs I got at Irwindale. Best $5 I spent at the track. Those were the days.
Thank you. I recall those days fondly.
I liked the description in a newspaper clip that said Larry LLoyd about him Wadding up his midget. It has been a long time since I heard that description. Thanks Harold.
It's all in English, but we don't speak quite that way today. That's why I just let them fly as written. Though I will admit to struggling from time to time when reading the stories aloud.
First car I remember my father owning. It was silver, blue poly 2 door. His had a single blinker in the middle, not as bulky. I kept seeing the ones like yours so after looking it up I found some were done like yours as an upgrade or done after market, but many were like his from the factory. Blinkers then were not even a standard in that era with many cars, but people liked them....
There were a few different ways Ford made them work. The LTD, XL, 500XL, I gave up trying to figure them all out.
Nice job, I never really liked this track. You have anything from southbay / 117
Yes, some, mostly CRA related. What makes these videos work is the program itself. We need a feature article (117 usually doesn't have one, nor does Mesa Marin), some good images, and the race results. These are not hard and fast rules, but they are at least filters.
South Bay was Dean Thompsons favorite track
I like that the San Jose ambulance company had an ad in the program. I'm sure they were kept busy at the racetrack back in those days. At least the drivers knew they could get a classy ride in a Cadillac ambulance on the way to the hospital. 😜
Just call CH3-4141
Ooh, I see a mistake, they wrote the combined time of 3 laps as 1 lap. My dad has always said the older cars were much faster, he claimed that the pure stock hardtops from the 60's were faster than todays late models. And we all know the reason, they had the magical "Three quarter " cams in them. If I could only get one of those three quarter cams I would build an F1 car and dominate...
There were some fairly loose engine rules back then. Much of it was self-policed.
Parnelli had a lot of great success in his career, but he also had a lot of bad luck. With any kind of luck at all he could have won Indy five times!
True. He was just as often his own worst enemy.
@@haroldosmer9803 Yes, I agree. He drove as hard as he could every lap no matter how far he was ahead. The reliability of the cars back in his day weren't very good, and he was very tough on his equipment. 😉
I remember when George Ruark ran that paintscheme on his late model! It was absolutely wild! He said he quit using it because it would be way too expensive to repaint! Been looking for photos of that car for ages.
George was always fun to talk with. I have a lot of photos from my years as Program Guy. Send me an email or reach out on Facebook and I'll see what I can do to get you a copy.
Lee's mom got thrown out for chucking an object at the starter. 🤣🤣🤣
I'll admit to that little point being one of my favorites in the series.
NEVER called modifieds! 😉 That was a whole different car.
I have several programs that call them Modifieds, Sprint Cars, and Big Cars (as this cover does) over the years. It varied across the country, too, adding to the confusion.
My dad raced jalopies with Bob Hogle in the mid to late 50s at Gardena stadium. A lot of people thought Bob was going to be the next Parnelli Jones but it never quite worked out for him.
I never learned why. He was good. Perhaps he should have taken his first Indy opportunity.
@@haroldosmer9803 yeah, I never knew why he didn't make it big also. Don't know what happened with his plans to race at Indy??
I was there....
It was always a big deal, even though Ascot Park was more of a sprint car track.
Hi Harold! Congrats on your 100th Retro Racing Report! I love every one of them and there are so many that ring close to home with me. The drivers, the dates and the race tracks all take me back to a better time. PLEASE keep producing these gems as I am sure that there are 1000's more fans such as myself that really get a kick out of your work. Thanks again and Cheers, Tim
Much appreciated.
i was there it was ugly
We've come a ways since then.
Thanks for sharing , love the coil cars❤
Harold my entire family appreciates your excellent coverage of this important history. My WWII vet dad who grew up in Lincoln Hgts near Legion Ascot and would take us kids to Speedway 605 while he raised us in Arcadia would have loved your videos and fine efforts. Thank you!
You are most welcome. Thank you for the encouraging words.
This was a bad outcome for sure. Thanks for posting. This day and age we are losing half miles as sprinters are now running what used to be called Midget tracks. Here in Indiana we still have Terre Haute and that's it for "big tracks." Dirt of course, a few paved half miles but they are not used that much. Go to a race and look at the age of the crowd. Good thing open wheel had the split, it really helped......
All true. Racing has always been hard to do. USAC had a heavier hand back in the day and lost a lot of people because of their often petty rules. My nearest track is Ventura Raceway and the crowd there is often full families with small children.
Very well narrated. Most of the drivers, I had not heard of. Somehow, the tragic event I don't remember at all. I was 20 at that time, born, raised and living in Indianapolis. Auto racing in the Championship open wheel forms of U.S.A.C. (United States Auto Club) sanctioned events I followed heavily. One thing for sure: Promoter/Indy Car owner, J.C. Agajanian [1913 - 1984] loved his car racing hobby. There were few "flamboyant" car owners like Agajanian and, you can't help but liking his determination in the sport.
Thank you! Part of what we're after here is bringing some of those old names into the light.
Thank you for posting.
Thanks for posting the full version. I live in Sacramento, and while that is a tragic day, I am always interested in local racing history of all types. Thanks again.
Happy to help out. I'm still not sure why the video was partial. We do what we do, eh?

@@fireuptwo I am so sorry.
These videos make me feel old for some strange reason.
ah saddly we dont have much mile track dirt raceing anymore, we got maybe a handful if even, and thats between silver crown modified and other catigories, wish we would have had that last one planned for indy before the limestone was put down for harness racing, or that they would let them race on the limestone at least motorcycle flat track like they do in lima ohio but thing would have to change in policy, still we could use a big dirt track in indy the only type of racing they dont have , got road course superspeedway two quarter mile dirt the big short track ot irp the speeddrome, go karts, and drag racing as well as the occasional monster trucks we just dont have dirt silvercrown racing anymore though if someone wanted to spend the dough for a 1/2 they certainly got a bit of space at indy raceway park or the brickyard but it would take timing and a willingness to spend the dough
The only one I can think of is Duquoin… I don’t believe Springfield exists now and of course Syracuse is gone 😞
@@saragrant9749 springfield is still going they had a silvercrown race there last year duquoine is still there and sacramento is still dirt just dont think they have much auto racing there motorbike I think but havent had a silver crown race there in quite awhile think though mainly due to travel costs and most of the racers that do it are from the midwest or east coast you do get several that move here from cali though but most are from the midwest including okahoma
@ I had forgotten about Sacramento. Glad to hear Springfield is still here! I miss Syracuse…
@@saragrant9749 yea they even promised a new track to have it at and it has yet to be built, we did have indy but as I said the state fair though having a place to train horses for the horse track and casino in shelbyvill was more importent, I mean yea I get it indiana is the center of the hub of midwest harness racing and you got lots of amish and farms but of all places indy is called the auto racing capital of the world, its the last place that auto racing should have been shoved aside, and not to mention the hoosier hundred in years past used to be second in prestige to win only to the indy 500 and daytona, what is the equivelent of winning knoxvill nationals or the kings royal or world 100 on dirt today, and was for a time second highest paying in the early days of usac, the indy state fair also went away faster and I think was narrower then duquine and springfield so it was more challenging to drive in what was the crown jewel of all usac dirt events, they revived it as a pavement race and while its indeed 100 miles actually slightly more when they complete the final lap its not dirt and we all know its supposed to be a dirt event the guys and girls that race silvercrown, the fans, the folks from usac, even bobby santos 3 said we all know its home is the indy state fair after he won the first pavement one two years ago. I never saw it at the state fair there was supposed to be one more since they didn't start the limestone surface conversion yet due to covid putting it off, and they would not wait 5 weeks for the end of may so we could have it that is why I am still cross and mad at the indy state fairboard, I didn't know it was such a big thing till I read about what silvercrown and champ car was, and seeing them at a half mile the most you get is 50 miles since all the turning just rips up the tires over the corse of laps even if the cars got enough engine and fuel capacity, trying to have a 200 lap race just physicaly would not work saddly, and the turns are sharper on a half vs one of the miles that is more gentle, as for sacramento I dont know when the last time they raced actual cars there, I know they still flattrack moto there though sometimes, and I wish they would let them do that at indy at least since they race on pea gravel at lima in ohio, it also would have been nice if they would have saved the inner half mile at the indy state fair to keep racing alive there it was the second oldest continual use auto racing venue in use in the usa second only to the milwalkee mile
Is there a part 2? This cuts off way early and doesn't even get to the race info...
I do not know how or why the video is cut off at 5 minutes. The video has been re-uploaded, though we've kept both the long and short versions up. This is a 15 minute video, sorry for the trouble.

Russ Moynagh was my uncle. His burns were a lot worse than the program states. His recovery took awhile. He told me he only drove a few times after his recovery against my aunt’s wishes without her knowing. An important point not to be missed, this is an autobiography! (with Bones Bourcier)
Very true. Most of this type of book are first person, typically recorded discussions. The writer can (and should) take some editing honors to help the story flow. This book is great because it reveals the depth of Ed Pink's work. Motorsports guys tend to see things through their own discipline and down realize someone like Ed did more than drag racing engines (or Midget engines, or boat engines, or...).
These are great Harold. Thanks for the trip!
Thank you. This one in particular is loaded with images. Makes it more fun!
10:05 Jim Rieder, Rieder Racers 81. That’s my dads car. Pancho Carter the driver. USAC Champion in 1972. 👍
Excellent! Your dad was one of the great owners of that era. It takes more than drivers ya know.
Hi, I enjoyed the video! Do you have any materials on the 1987 USAC National Midget race?
As it happens, I just posted (on Harold Osmer facebook page) a stack of images from the pits at the 1987 Turkey Night Grand Prix. It's only images with driver names and no data, but they are candid.
My first "Turkey Night Grand Prix" was 1973 at Ascot Park Gardena. I've been to 39 total Grand Prix's. I believe the best race I ever saw was 2018 at Ventura and the last 10 lap battle between Christopher Bell and Kyle Lawson. The amount of thunderous tank and wheel slapping that Lawson delivered to Bell was astounding in a failed effort to pass. Bell's car held up to the assault and won the race. The last 10-lap spectacle made the 2-hour drive up from Los Angeles worth it.
Ventura is the perfect size for Midget racing. Bring a jacket and something to sit on.
Love the pictures of ads in the program
Thank you! They are an important part of the story.
I had a 67 Ltd. 390cid Want a 60 61 63 64 or 67 galaxie.
Interesting how we all get our favorites. My initial goal was a '67 but this one came up first and here we are. Someone will come along one day and have to have it. Until then ...
Harold, I was at this race sitting in the main grandstand. Billy Cantrell in the Jack London Offy was magnificent that night. This win gave Jack London back to back Thanksgiving Grand Prix wins as A.J. Foyt won for Jack London in 1961. My friend Don Horvath ran 6th in his #68 Revmaster Offy.
The notes say Parnelli went out with "magneto trouble" which back then was generic for bad engine. Cantrell's was marked as "sour" from L132 on. It wasn't until 1969 when they dropped the lap count to 100.
