I'm DONE. Here's how I'm replacing Adobe in my life.
After all the lawsuits and shady practices that have come to light, I think it's time to move away from Adobe. As a creator, it's a bit of a challenge to live without programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro, but there are definitely good alternatives out there.
Here's a few that I've found from Apple, Affinity, and other studios:
Final Cut Pro (www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/)
Motion (apps.apple.com/us/app/motion/id434290957?mt=12)
Logic Pro (www.apple.com/logic-pro/)
Affinity Studio (affinity.serif.com/en-us/)
DaVinci Resolve (www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve)

    is there a method to overlay a canvas on a 3d model, so that you can trace 3d models on the canvas?

  • @joelmulder

    No. Not unless you do this professionally. Shapr3D is lovely to use, but WAY too expensive for someone who only designs/3d prints something every so often. Especially when stuff like Fusion and Onshape is free (with limitations).

    I'm a Blender user for about 10 years and just for one thing I decide to use shapr3D and Plasticity; NURBS modeling and these two softwares are really amazing. Of curse I can use other softwares Like Rhino3D or AutoCAD 3D or other things but I found these two really really handsome tools for giving vector data

    • @Desklord
      @Desklord Місяць тому

      Try different exporting formats. Some formats export with the textures as a package and others export them as images that can be added in Blender’s material editor. Be sure your blender view settings are set to “material” or “rendered”. Also, this video is getting old. Blender has been updated many times since I made it - it may be out of date. Good luck!

    I started with Adobe pretty much at the beginning ... Illustrator 88 (version 1.0) and, a couple of years later when it came out, Photoshop 1.0. (Though I did see a copy running that predated the Adobe launch running on a commercial scanner.) Yes, I am *_that old._* ;-) I was a total Adobe fanboy for a very long time-right up until they stopped _selling_ software, only *_renting_* it. I just couldn't support that. So, while working for companies that paid the CC rental fees, I used the latest version, I personally kept my copy of CS5.5 running at home. I bought the Affinity apps early, and used them side by side with CS5.5 _until_ Affinity released v2 of their apps. I happily paid the very modest upgrade price, and stepped away from Adobe forever. Sure, it's a different workflow-some worse, some _much_ better. And no, there are no AI goodies. (Though, with Krita and the free AI content generation plugin, that's been replaced for us.) For our small agency, we are 100% Adobe free, and absolutely loving it. For video, DaVinci Resolve (even the free version) totally replaced PP and AE. The Studio version, for the low price, is beyond a bargain. And while we don't do any real 3D, Blender is amazing. From a one-time passionate Adobe brand advocate to a vocal Adobe brand _detractor,_ it's been a long and interesting journey.

    Oh, a youngster. My first Photoshop version was 2.5 - no layers (came with version 3). Illustrator 4.1 - no RGB color space, no gradients (both came with version 5, if I remember correctly, and I had to wait until version 7 to get it for Windows). I need Adobe CC software from time to time, but overall I try to keep my CS3 running (I bought a version that no longer requires activation, but needs Windows 8 or Windows 11 for ARM to run properly) and use it where needed for work (yes, this old version of AI is my favorite tool, and PS does what it needs to do for me). Started to incorporate Affinity 2.5 into my workflows, but it's not suitable all the time (and more often than not I prefer working in AICS3). Not everyone can switch, and that's a shame … ;-)

    • @c.augustin
      @c.augustin 2 місяці тому

      @@Desklord Problem is that Adobe has started to revoke valid (!) licenses on activation as of lately (happened to me a month ago with my Adobe CS6 Standard for Windows, have heard and read it too from several sources). Since only Windows version of CS are at least installable and still running (in principle), I've hunted down a used and legal copy of Adobe CS6 (including CD and serial number!) when I started going Windows "full-time" some years ago, but can no longer activate it on a new machine. Adobe does everything, even if illegal in many countries world-wide (knowing quite well that most users won't go to court over it), to force people to subscribe to CC. This is why I'm glad to have a non-activation copy of Adobe CS3 Standard (but the 3rd-party component Adobe used to implement the licensing has massive issues on later versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 on x64 machines, rendering it completely unusable on those). Still, no ideal situation, as I need many CS6 features/programs …

    Easy for video. I switched to DaVinci Resolve for editing in 2016, but was using it for color grading as far back as 2011. And, now as an NLE Resolve is vastly superior to Premiere. Plus it has built in to it Fairlight and Fusion. And, Adobe continues to suck with color in Premiere. When it comes to what will be the future industry standard in video it will be DaVinci Resolve. Even Avid editors will switch to DaVinci I believe. With DaVinci for $300 on time purchase you get it all. And, it’s able to work on Mac, Windows, and Linux. FCPX only works on Mac, and is less versatile. So go to Resolve.

    My biggest issue with Adobe started when I went to change my plan, not cancel, but downgrade (this is when they first started doing this). They said I was on yearly contract, I said no I am not *I’m monthly but they are doing sneaky stuff that makes monthly plans a yearly contract even if you pay monthly (at least that was what happened to me). I was shocked, they said I would have to pay hundreds of dollars to cancel or downgrade. I felt forced to stay with it. They wound up letting me downgrade without charging me but it was a huge pain and super stressful, and I doubt they’d ever let me cancel or downgrade again without charging me the rest of the years plan amount. I really do hope Adobe changes but like you said it likely will never happen. Pretty depressing but I’ll be looking into programs you mentioned, I’d love to get away from paying hundreds a year.

    • @Desklord
      @Desklord 2 місяці тому

      Yeah, that “monthly payment, yearly commitment” thing is sneaky. I’ve never seen another company try to pull that off. Some time ago I had the same issue downgrading.

      @littlebanshee 2 місяці тому

      @@Desklord It’s not a good look. If someone signs up for a monthly plan it should be just that and they should make it very clear if it’s a yearly contact regardless if paying monthly or yearly. I also don’t think this sort of stuff should have any contract or the like associated with it, this isn’t a car loan or something. Not to mention the price of these programs.

    I think I might have you beat on Photoshop. I'm pretty sure I started with Photoshop 4 in 1998. I also edited my first videos ever in Adobe Premiere that same year. I'm right where you are right now. Or close. Going through some professional changes. Having to evaluate costs. I've used Photoshop and QuarkXPress for the last 20+ years. Moving to Affinity for AF Photo and AF Publisher. Also currently using Davinci Resolve for video editing. It's worked really well so far. More to unlock with a one time fee for premium. But like they say, you get 80-90% of the program for free. Affinity also has a marketplace where creatives can design plugins and other features for the Affinity programs and you can buy what you want at fairly reasonable prices. I like that. When a platform creates a place for creative people make a living by making tools for other creative people to use.

    I still can’t find a decent alternative to Lightroom though. Adobe CameraRAW which is baked into Lightroom works just so well with all raw formats. Some of the open source programs just ruin photos or are immensely hard to use to get a decent result. I just want that carousel thing at the bottom and to import all my photos and make adjustments. I got Affinity Photo 2 (only) and it’s ok but I have to make my selection before and edit each raw file one at a time but once you’ve hit develop it’s all baked into the layer. I’ve bought the Apple software bundle with a student discount a few years back and paid £300 in the UK for all of them. Absolute bargain considering FCPX costs around that just by itself. Having Motion, Logic Pro, Compressor and whatever the other one is-it’s great!

There is a free version but it's dogs**t so get a licence that fits you. I got a musicians license on sale for like 60 bucks. This vid really helped me figure out my workflow but I prefer exporting just the materials as PNGs from procreate to take back to blender. While working between the two programs, I have the save location for my material images in my iCloud drive, so that when I export them from procreate, back into the iCloud drive, it skips a step and overwrites the old texture file, which just has to be refreshed to show up on my current model in blender This lets you cut out the step of having to merge vertices and reenable auto smooth, and also works for situations where you dont want to replace your old model (already rigged/weight painted)

      Try using procreate to export as USDZ. That format contains the geometry and materials. You may need to connect the roughness and metallic materials manually in blender though.

    Hi! I can see you are using the ipad mini. Is it enought for nomad and procreate perfomance-wise? I want to take an ipad but the pro is too bulky for me but i dont want to be limited. Great vids!

      Yes, I love it! It’s can do enough to create on the go. It only has 4GB of ram so once in a while I’ve hit that limit. I use it most to play around in 3D while I’m on public transit. Then I go home to my big machines and import or remake things there.

    I've been using shap3r a bit, but they expired my sub was after a year and ask for a bunch more. I'm a hobby maker, maybe designing 5 objects a year. to me the prize is way too high

      @Desklord 6 місяців тому

      Yeah, they really expect you to use it a lot more for that price. Maybe Blender will add an edit mode that mimics Shapr3D’s modeling style. 🤞

    Thank you, I've been wanting to see a workable solution to creating models in Nomad Sculpt to embed in a blender scene. And nomad now has UV unwrap so that that removes a step

      That’s great to hear! I should make a new video for that.

      I’ll look into it. That would be a useful workflow if your on the go!

    hi! when I export an obj from blender to procreate the uv map size isn't the same I'll explain: when I export the uv map from blender, it has the 1024x1024 texture size but when I open the obj in procreate it makes it 2048x2048, I'm having trouble with this because the engine that I use the 3d models for has a set limit for the uv map size which is 1024x1024, are there any ways I can fix this? also sorry for the bad grammar

    • @Desklord
      @Desklord 7 місяців тому

      Hmmm… that’s a tough one. I don’t think it’s possible to change the UV settings in Procreate. I’d try bringing it back to blender and scaling down the UV resolution then going to your gaming engine from there. Although after all that it might not be worth the fuss.

    This workflow breakdown was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for sharing this!! I recently saw a BTS video by cubstudio where they talked about using procreate to paint their textures and I was blown away. This is by far the best breakdown of how to accomplish that, that I have found.

      Nomad sculpt seems to be available for Android but I think Procreate is an iPad exclusive. Nomad sculpt has some great texturing tools though.
